Two handy gadgets, both cheap, if you work with solenoids. The main one, a "Mag Stick". A battery operated detector for magnetic fields. You just put the tip to the top of the solenoid and if the LED glows there is a magnetic field. The other is a ring magnet. take off the coil (power isolated!) and use the permanent magnet to open/close the valve. Got mine from RS years ago.

I once had a watertank that kept mysteriously growing algae despite cleaning. Finally traced it to a dip in the fill hose that was growing a jungle of algae in the dip. Everytime the tank was filled some new algae was flushed into the tank. You might check the watermaker output line for something similar.

A mechanical filter is a good start on your water system but it sounds like you have a lot of contaminates. I would suggest you put in a UV light filter in your water line to eliminate growing bugs in the water. you can get one from most fish pet stores that will work.

Hello, you might consider a passive centrifugal pre-filter on the inlet of your raw water supply.
They are quite small for what they do and will extend the life of your main inline replaceable filters by a lot.
The best thing about them is that they don't use any electrical power, unless you get a pump driven one.
    Just a thought, cheers.

Speaking as a retired superyacht engineer.
Ice makers on boats have three states of being and one dream.
State 1, Awaiting parts for repairs to proceed.
State 2, Being in the process of repair.
State 3, Rapidly degrading in performance towards requiring repair.
The dream? Having a drink in hand requiring ice and approaching the ice maker with no thought whatsoever in one’s mind that ice might not be produced upon request. 😂
    Keep drinks in fridge.
Use old fashioned ice trays to make ice in freezer.
    Relax. 😎👍🍻

I'm from Europe and I camped in pulau Kapas for a whole week with my Malaysian wife. I remember the water getting cloudy in the afternoon because of the boats shaking the sand which causes the coral to die off.
One morning I saw a huge monitor lizard warming up at the beach. That beach was all for us this whole week ! There's a rain collecting system for us to wash out the salt. We saw small sharks, blue ring stingrays, sea turtles, friendly clown fish exiting their anémona to come greed us and pet them (not kidding).
One of the best moments in my life. I could right an essay for all the things we saw there.

Hey Nick, you are getting VERY good at diagnosing and fixing problems. It is fun to watch your solutions come together and actually work. We spend five months each year on our little old trawler exploring the Inside Passage between Seattle and Southeast Alaska. Portions of it are as remote as you find almost anywhere in the world. We have built up quite an assembly of parts and pieces in our kit to keep things running over the 42 years we have owned our simple little boat. I can only imagine how complex the systems are aboard Ruby Rose 2, and how extensive your kit will become. Frankly, we don't want more complexity. We consciously try to keep everything as simple as possible, but no simpler.
RE: your water, watermaker, and ice maker woes, I have some ideas for you consideration: 1) agrressively filter EVERY single dop of water that goes in your tanks with a REALLY good filtration system (the idea of a water polishing system is a good one too); 2) install an Acuva (or other) inline filter that includes a UV light that kills bacteria as well as a physical fitler - then do not drink any water on board the boat that hasn't gone through that filter; 3) as you build up your plumbing repair kit on the boat, include a selection of SHARKBITE fittings - they are super quick and easy to install, don't leak, and can be disassembled as quickly as they go together. The Sharkbite fittings are expensive, but the first time it takes you two minutes to put a solution to a plumbing problem in place (rather than twenty minutes or two hours or a full day), you will forget about the cost. They make everything from backflow preventers to unions to valves. They have brass (r maybe it is bronze) housings, not plastic, so they don't break. We carry about 30 of them in our plumbing kit. I have essemtially rebuilt our entire water system over the years, piece by piece. Sharkbite fittings are the best I have found and I have used them everywhere. Never had a failure. In total, they have saved me days, not hours. Also, we keep a supply of pex water line on board in various sizes. It handles any pressure a boat system will impose, seems to last forever, is easy to use, doesn't break if it freezes, and works very well with Sharkbite fittings. It is also available almost anywhere a basic building supply store exists.
One other comment - a really good marine electrician once told me "Never install any electrical device on a boat that isn't fused or on a breaker." He stressed that includes absolutely everything, even solenoids, which are pretty brain-dead simple valves. You might want to install a fused switch on the lead to your solenoid. My wife and I were both volunteer firefightsrs for twenty years. We have had to fight three boat fires (one on an 85' Ocean Alexander) that were traced to electrical failures that would not have happened if proper fusing(breakers had been installed on the circuits. In two of those cases, the only way to put out the fire was to sink the boat, including the OA. Fuses and breakers are remarkably cheap, and the peace of mind they give you is invaluable.

I wonder if you have regrets over buying a Seawind, with all the problems you've been having. Of course, I don't really blame Seawind, since it appears that most of the problems are with suppliers and not Seawind, per se. It does seem though that you're spending an awful lot of time doing repairs on a new boat, though.
I hope your filtration system for the water works. With all the algae in the system, you really need to get it out so that it doesn't block solenoids and such. I was thinking that a total and complete flush of the system might be necessary, but I'm not sure what it would take to do that.
Anyway, I wish you safe travels as you get to the port where RR2 gets loaded for the Med, and I look forward to your Med cruising.

Nick…. You should look into a small air tank with hose and nozzle… that will give you a better chance of blowing out debris… just have to be aware of blowing on or through a delicate area such as a thin diaphragm.
Perhaps a smaller Pancake style air tank compressor… it would provide enough air to blow things out and still be easily portable and it would not take up much storage.

What about a bicycle pump, or a can of air-duster?

You mentioned using a carbon/charcoal filter in your water "polishing" system. A particulate filter could be better for capturing the debris. The charcoal filter is more for the taste of the water and chemical removal. A 2 stage coarse filter followed by a finer filter will clog less and be cheaper than the charcoal. Use charcoal just before your drinking water tap in the galley.
The lack of a manual shut off valve on the pressurized water line to the ice maker is unacceptable, and of course Seawind should make sure that this never happens again. Are there shut off/isolation valves for the galley and heads? Or are you expected to shut down the fresh water pump and loose the entire pressurized system until you fix any problem?
Looking forward to you cruising the Mediterranean. Please tell us details about shipping RR2. Loading, unloading, cost, are you allowed to ride along on the ship, is it a standard cargo ship or a specialized yacht transporter, etc.? Here's hoping it goes smoothly and that you get to shoot video of the process.
Nancelot13 is correct that if you have an access port a shop vac is the best first step to tank cleaning as it will remove most of the gunk and save you from many filter changes

Italy is a wonderful country, producing many great things. But not anything electrical, let alone electronic. Avoid Italian electrical components.

you are in a place with notoriously lousy water quality. After this, I stick to the south pacific, Bahamas, or Caribbean, maybe a bounce to Europe, but Asia, Philipines, you go there with the knowledge that any water you take on board will jack up your boat. Pack up and head to a more desirable spot

I went to Tioman back in the day when I was in the Navy. We were exercising with a bunch of other Navies and anchored off of Pulau Tioman. Funny story, two of the sailors on our ship (HMAS Hobart) decided they enjoyed resort life more than Navy life and jumped ship. Their absence was only detected when we sailed which kicked off a multi Navy search and rescue mission, they were found safe and well drinking beers next the pool in the resort on Tioman. They were locked up, returned to Australia and spent time behind bars in the military prison before being discharged. Anyway, Tioman is a beautiful place, enjoy.
