I remember growing up in the 60s thru 80s seeing the classic jolly green giant commercials on TV.
My paternal grandfather work for Minnesota valley canning and green giant for over 45 years. My maternal grandfather also worked there. The canning factory part of the building in Le Sueur is all gone. They tore it down several years ago. Many memories of that place
Thank you for sharing 🥗😀
At 9 years old (72), the FIRST kite I ever had was The Jolly Green Giant Kite!
I think it took two Cheerio(?) Cereal Box tops and shipping to get it! My Dad,
my Brother, and I took it over to the school there in Redondo Beach, and
flew it until it broke, maybe an hour? LOL GREAT MEMORIES THOUGH! :)
Kiting used to be a big thing for kids back then. Gotta do something with your time when there's no internet around! Eventually a kid's kite always ended up with the string wrapped around a towering obstacle, as all good things come to an end.
@@Matt_from_Florida ha that reminds of the famous paratrooper toys in the 60's and 70's, always ending up in a tree! I think EVERY toy section at the grocery store (Vons, Lucky's, Albertsons, Alpha Beta, etc (SoCal)) or Woolworths/Woolco had them along with plastic toy soldiers in a bag!!!! Those parachute toys were my favorite cheap toy, I must have gone through a dozen as a kid, oh and cap guns too, my 2nd favorite toy! :)
@@SoapinTrucker Yep. I remember chucking those paratroops into the air over & over & over!!!
The farmer w/Little Sprout looks like he was drawn by the Keebler Elves people.
A fascinating look at one of America's legendary brand mascots, The Jolly Green Giant. 🌽
Don't forget Lil' Sprout
Isn't it from the UK?
My Dad took my 2 sisters and I to Al’s Thrifty Mart to get a few groceries. There was a huge 6 ft cut out The Jolly Green Giant made of shiny, foil material! The manager was throwing it out. I guess the promotion ended. My oldest sister asked if she could have it and the manager said “sure!” My Mom worked night shift and came inside of the house and saw that Jolly Green Giant! It scared her half to DEATH!!! 😂😂🤣
😂🤣😆
LMAO!
Yes life has its surprises.
👍
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That had to for sure be a Wishful Kodak Moment! Vintage Green Giant is Totally Awesome!

In 1965, The Kingsmen, of "Louie, Louie" fame, recorded a song inspired by the Jolly Green Giant, called, The Jolly Green Giant. The first lyrics of the song are, in fact, the Jolly Green Giant jingle itself.💚💚💚💚
Little Sprout is one of the cutest kid friendly mascots ever!
Up in the Valley of the Jolly Green Giant....!

Many generations of my family have lived in and around Le Sueur, MN. I was born and raised there. I remember having Green Giant toys as a kid. Cool photos you found for this video.
I've heard of Le Sueur baby peas
@@samanthab1923 absolutely the only ones I buy! Our favorite!
Thanks for the time it takes for these videos.
Another great video 👍. I remember the commercials on TV. “From the valley of the jolly, Ho, Ho, Ho Green Giant”. Back in the days when everyone in the family sat down and ate dinner together. Back when kids were expected to eat their vegetables. No desert until you eat your vegetables. There was a rumor that the Giant stands behind his corn and peas 😉
There was a print ad that appeared a number of years ago with a drawing of the Giant standing over his valley, and at the bottom it said : "I stand for goodness (in fact I haven't sat down for 75 years!"
I remember the green giant commercials on TV for many several years.
I've seen the old commercials of him.
these videos take me to my happy place.
not much can do that, these days.. i find your channel very soothing - thank you
Born in 66. Green giant song and sprout got me to eat peas and broccoli
I operated a pea combine and a corn picker for Green Giant in Wisconsin during the 60s. Unbelievably long hours on an open tractor, day and night in all weather. I loved it. It was one of the best jobs I ever had. Thanks for this nice presentation.
Ho Ho Ho Green Giant! Blue Earth is right down the road from me! They have a traditional two day festival in the summertime.
I've been through Blue Earth during that... I LOVE SMALL TOWN USA!
@@marshmangunnar9150 oh yes indeed.! nothing like small town living... 😊
Yes I remember that brand. It is still a favorite product of my childhood and still is. Thanks for sharing this with us that watch your channel. Brings back memories. Thanks again.
Another great video, thanks
Good things from the garden, Garden in the valley! The valley of the Jolly Green Giant, Giant!
For decades, we had a major Green Giant facility in my town. Created a lot of jobs. My aunt worked there till the day she died. It shut down years ago for reasons I can no longer remember. The sprawling facility was then purchased and revamped by S. Martinelli to expand production of their world famous apple cider.
There was one Green Giant ad that aired only a few times in 1972 and was pulled. In it they moved him to the city and had him standing amongst skyscrapers and other buildings, and instead of "Valley of the Jolly Green Giant", it said "Hometown of the Jolly Green Giant." They even changed his jingle to reflect the move. The following year they moved him back to the valley and introduced the Sprout.
The Jolly Green Giant's first name is Jolly and he stands over 55 feet tall. The sweet corn Green Giant uses is their own sweet corn hybrid seed which they developed many years ago.
Little Green Sprout looks like he was drawn by the same studio that did the movie "The Point".
"Up in the Valley of the Jolly Green Giant..."
It's a valley. Valleys are DOWN, not up.
Who cares? Loved the commercials!
Thanks for all the great nostalgic memories!
My brothers and I had flown many Jolly Green Giant kites. Lots of lessons learned by collecting labels for Mom to send out to get the free kites. Six to 8 weeks delivery by mail seemed like an eternity but was so much fun flying the kites so high they look like a pea in the sky.
Best corn ever is the frozen in butter sauce. Melt in your mouth goodness.
@Deedee Gee, the corn harvested in the US, is nothing but GMO garbage, do not eat anything that is not organic.
Gotta love that white shoe peg corn...tender and sweet.❤️🌽

As usual, very interesting. 👍
I love your videos. Short and to the point, informative without rambling on and a nice narration voice 👍🏻
Great video I enjoyed it thank you very much 👍😊
Love my veggies!!!
A great video as always
I loved those commercials with that big Jolly Green Giant and the song 🎶 Ho ho ho Green Giant 🎶
My hubby & I went to the town of Blue Earth to visit the museum for the jolly green giant! It was a fun day visit while in southern Minnesota
i grew up in the 80's with the jolly green giant as a kid. i miss the old commercials. they had the best jangle back then.
Anything Green Giant History is so Awesome! Got me to eating my Vegetables a lot better as a kid growing up by the Ads and Commercials, Started liking Spinach a lot as well because of Popeye! Thank-You for sharing and God Bless!
Ho Ho Ho.....loved seeing the commercial may years ago.
Does anyone remember the Pop Shoppe? I grew up in Denver in the 70's, and it was a big deal to go pick out your flavors.
We had those in California.
we also had those in minnesota, my kids loved them, only problem was bringing back the crate & returnable bottles!
@@davidphelps214 Cool. I actually went to high school in MN. Don't miss that cold.
You've done so many stories about American companies, restaurants and businesses. The one thing that strikes me are the majority of these are bought out, merged, acquired by other large conglomerates. Some have managed to sustain the quality, however often times the quality drops and they fade into oblivion.
Fascinating history here!.Didn’t know the history behind the Green Giant!.HO HO HO Green Giant!.😅😊
Does anybody know who did the voice of the jolly Green Giant? Found out it was Elmer "Len" Dresslar Jr...still remember it!
I'm not sure who he is, sorry.
I was going to ask. Don't recognize the name. Did he do any others?
Fred Gwynne was the Green Giant (Herman Munster)
@@samanthab1923 Len Dresslar was also the voice of Dig 'Em, the Sugar Smacks frog. Dresslar was also a member of the singing groups The J's and Jamie, and Singers Unlimited. He recorded some solo singles in the 1950s for Mercury Records, two of which ("These Hands" and "Chain Gang") you can find here on RUclips.
I love frozen vegetables soooo much!
I remember when Little Sprout came into existence the Libbys Libbys Libbys jingle later followed from Libbys. It came in to counter Little Sprout getting the kid's attention. Went like this, Libbys Libbys Libbys on the lable lable lable. You will like it like it like it on the table table table. It says Libbys Libbys Libbys on lable lable lable.
I remember working at a Green Giant cannery in Waitsburg Washington in the Summer of 1981, was processing and sorting Lima beans made very good money at the time, but it was only seasonal work, worked every day until the harvest was over, sadly the plant doesn’t exist anymore, because I had enlisted in the Air Force but I had great memories of working there
aren't line beans imported from China and Mexico now?
@@suppylarue220 I think so, but 40 years ago I processed them
I worked 2 summers at the Waitsburg plant during green pea harvest. And 2 in Dayton for green beans and asparagus. This was high school & college 1976-1980. This plant and Dayton put many kids through college with no student loans!
Perfect end to a great day. Thanks
The green will be for ever and ever!!!!!!
My favourite mascot. Mr.Bubble, Kool-Aid Man, and the Underwood Devil are close behind.
Cool, I have these veggies in cans on my aisle at the Ingle s where I work 😀
Ho, ho, ho, Green Giant!
About a hundred miles south west of the Twin Cities is a tall green water tower with the words "Valley of the Jolly" on it.
Ho Ho Ho Green Giant I remember those old commercials.
In the 1970s my father's factory produced Jolly Green Giant dolls. They were big, about four feet tall. I never heard how successful the promotion was. To my mind, there was something vaguely creepy about a bright green doll that big that was wearing nothing but a toga. The Green Giant factory must have had at least some misgivings, too. They followed that promotion up with production of a Green Giant doll about four inches tall. The workers at the factory called these "midget giants."
Green Giant had a canning factory in Lanark, Illinois until the 1980s. Then General Mills took over and moved the plant to Belvidere Illinois.
Great video.
Everyone loves the Green Giant...HO HO HO
It's always good with butter.
My girlfriend and I love this channel! Can you do a history of Mad Magazine for a future segment?
Yes!!!
How well I remember hearing, in the valley of the jolly, ho ho ho, green giant.
Still a scary mascot...all these years later. :)
As a child I was terrified of the Jolly Green Giant. If the commercial came on tv I would scream in horror.
Those ads had that effect on a lot of small children, so you were not alone.
I’ve been to that statue. 😊
i love sweet peas.
put them on mac and cheese!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OMG that sounds delicious. I will have to try that as I too adore sweet pea’s. My oldest sister has never liked peas her entire life because they’re green and they roll around. I’m like what the heck? Also LOVE pea soup!!
Love them mixed in my mashed potatoes
Minnesota in the house
One would've thought that "ho ho ho" had already been taken by Santa Claus!
Love it
Talk about the Jolly Green Giant. He’s so big and mean. He stands in the valley with his hands on his hips. And then he hits you with a can of beans.
Up in the land of the jolly Green giant. Ho!Ho!Ho! Green giant
Im just green giant corn fan with butter on mound of corn
Inspired a great song by The Kingsmen.
From the Valley of the Jolly >> HO HO HO
Ho ho ho green giant!
We know what he was eating, but look at the smile at 3:13. I think the more apropos question is: what is he SMOKING?
If u think about it, in most of your videos it's always one company buying another monopoly. Soon there will be only a handful of companies but I'm betting they spread it out one guy owning many companies making it not look like a monopoly
Am i only here to figure out if the green giant performs photosynthesis. Yes. Yes I am.
He has his show on tv
It's not easy being green. . .
Do a video on Media Play.
Unfortunately he was killed by Kirk and Spock in episode 23 of Star Trek: "Who mourns for the Giant".
He died. The autopsy showed that he was a human bean.
😂
I remember one time a Green Giant commercial came on TV and my dad said: "I wonder what happens when that big green bastard gets the farts?" My sister and I laughed for weeks about that one...
Didn't that big green bastard fight the Brown Gargantua in the sixties Toho film "War of the Gargantuas"? He should fight Godzilla next - THAT'll make kids eat their damn peas!
I remember that movie. It looked like a Green Giant commercial from hell.
Ho ho ho.
When I would eat green giant green peas I would say ho ho .
Oh, my! I'm just waiting for all the green people to protest. Can't have a green person portrayed as big and jolly and vegan!
As a kid, it bothered me thinking of how he was always standing over the crops and wondering just how those peas were getting watered. Ho ho ho, Green Giant! 💚
Understandable. Must be rather jarring to be walking in the valley and look up, seeing his big green junk swaying in the breeze...I don't believe Hanes, Fruit of the Loom or Gildan make undies that size...I'd really hate to see a Jolly Green Banana Hammock, btw...
I am surprised that someone hasn't decided that this is racist!
It may be racist to Martians.😄
Haha...He was German; therefore, angry and threatening
Pease on earth
If hes a giant. Then why is he as small as a pea pod?
Hopefully being green he won’t “offend” anyone and be canceled! I remember in the late 60’s or early 70’s my uncle had a large Green Giant kite which after adding extra string flew very high.
