I ate at the original Hardees back in the early sixties. It was a big event to gather up a crowd of family and friends, drive all the way(20 miles) to Greenville for cheap burgers, fries, and milkshakes. Things tasted better back then.

The thing about Hardee's that sticks in my mind is how it was often the one of the first fast-food franchise to open in many rural Georgia towns. I'd often accompany my Dad for hunting or fishing trips and we would travel through many of these small rural towns and I noticed that the only places they had to grab a burger would be either a Hardee's or a Dairy Queen. Needless to say breakfast on these adventures came in the form of a Hardee's sausage and egg biscuit. Those biscuits were always a cut above the other chains breakfast offerings to this southern boy because they were made from scratch with buttermilk and tasted pretty close to what mom would make. It is still one of my preferred places to grab breakfast on the go over 40 years later.

I had no idea Hardee’s ever grew to be that big. To me, the restaurants were so bare bones. The places looked alot cheaper than being on the level as a McDonald’s or Burger King with all the colors, gimmicks and things to draw you in. I just remember Hardee’s being plain and drab dark brown with brown uniforms and nothing new or catchy. I had no idea it rose to be that successful.

Back in the late 1970's ,I lived in the Gratiot and McNichols on Detroit's Northeast side. There was a Hardee's located on Gratiot and Houston-Whittier. This was the very first Hardee's that I went to. When, Hardee's closed permanently the Hardee's building was torn down. Then, a laundromat was built on Hardee's property. My grandparents loved Hardees! In their final years when they went into s nursing home, mom travelled down there each year and stayed at a motel for several months at a time, to help take care of them. After a while she found a motel she particularly liked, and booked a room there every year. There was a Hardees on the same lot. Mom was a night owl and I was a lark, so whenever I visited her there, I would go to Hardees by myself for breakfast. The food, the service and the ambience were always great. Sometimes I stayed for hours reading my books and drinking coffee, and no one minded. Those weren't easy times, but that Hardees was always a bright spot. Holy cheese! That's crazy!!!! I was supervisor on graveyard shift (we were a 24 hour store) and the back door buzzer went off. I was literally sleepwalking my shift and wasn't thinking clearly. YOU NEVER OPEN THE BACK DOOR LATE AT NIGHT. I opened the door in these dark, wee hours of the morning and was greeted by a man with a bandana over his nose and mouth with a nickel-plated gun pointed directly at me. Thinking it was a bad dream, I said "HA!" real loud, then made my way back to the office, where I was working on some paperwork. One of my crew came up to the office door a little later and asked "who was at the back door?", which snapped me back into reality. It hadn't been a dream. Same man robbed a Wendy's restaurant in nearby Winston-Salem shortly afterward.

We had a Hardee's here in Downtown Binghamton, New York from the late 80's to early 90's. It was gone by the mid 90's I believe. A fancy clothing store now occupies the space. Once I placed an order at the counter and had no money to pay for it. I never exited a Hardee's restaurant so fast in my life... lol

My dad used to take me to Hardee's when I was a kid. We had at least seven locations in my area, but they all shuttered by the 2000's. A joint Hardee's/Shell gas station opened up around 2002 or so, and then in 2009, I actually helped start a second location in my area, and worked there for a few months until I found a better paying job. That store was in a rough location, so they moved it to a former Hardee's location that was open in the 90s. Then a few years ago, they built a brand new one not far from my house, so now we are back to three Hardee's locations.

Hardees and Burger Chef were our McDonald's "alternatives" back in the 60's when Dad wanted to "change up" our "burger nights". Back in those days, it was a real treat to go for a burger, fries and shakes. We would anxiously await those special nights when we would "take a ride", then stop at one of the BIG THREE. Back then, families ate nightly home-cooked meals made by Moms, so to go out for "fast food" was something special indeed....

I was a manager of Hardees in 1983 after training at the Columbia SC Hardees Training Store. At that time it was under Spartan Foods, which also owned Quincey's Steak House. They housed both Hardees & Quincey's trainees at an apartment complex. I believe the training lasted 4 weeks, before you were sent back to the location you were to manage. At that time the Breakfast Program was the most profitable. As far as I know Quincey's no longer exist and two of the Hardees in my area have closed.

My father collected all the California raisin figures from Hardee's which are still sitting on a collectors shelf here at my house when he passed away in 98 & I took over his house. Also not mentioned in your video were the "Superbowl Pins" which featured 25 pins with the teams who played in each superbowl starting from 1967 to 1990 as well as the year, where it was played & the final score for each. I remember the old man constantly taking me to eat Hardee's just to try collecting them all (which he eventually did) and put them all in this nice custom display frame. Folks always comment on that frame asking how or where to find them and I sadly have to inform them that unless you were eating Hardee's every week back in 91 collecting then you'll probably have to hunt for them online if they are available. Didn't realize then how sentimental these things would be to me now, I miss you pops!

Sometime around the year 1970 my siblings and I would spend weeks in the summer staying with our uncle because he lived on a hill just above Hardees. We would slide down the hill and order one of their char-broiled burgers with fries and we were in heaven! I was at the time and in the rural area I grew up in it was a 15-minute drive to anything resembling a fast-food restaurant. At that time Hardees was the only burger franchise in the county I lived in, and it was much later before we got our first McDonalds. I'm jealous!!! We didn't get the luxury of biscuit mix at our location/district. We used five pound bags of plain label all-purp flour, big blocks of generic shortening and had a special foil packet that we would dry mix into the flour which contained the raising agents (premeasured salt and baking powder) - douse it all with a half gallon of buttermilk and mix by hand, let rest, then flour the table and roll 'em out! The good news was if we ran short on anything, we'd high-tail it to the nearby Winn-Dixie and pick up more flour, etc. We had to made sure we never ran short on our amazing biscuits! I was the "little old lady who made biscuits" when I was in college and I soooo loved making those biscuits - it was relaxing!

Hardees here now is bigger on fried chicken...lots of people buy chicken there regularly because it is a lot cheaper than competitors here and better.
