- I rarely, RARELY ever say something is flat out bad. I think there is a market out there for just about every piece of gear you can find. However this particular piece of camera gear does not have a market and you should not buy one.
This is the GoPro Hero 7 White and its garbage. It might be the worst camera ever made, and not because its specs or features are bad, its bad because its a step backwards from an already made and similarly priced camera. And because it lies to you on the box.
Do not but the GoPro Hero 7 White, its terrible.

Yeah it should be fine for that, the image quality isnt terrible. But it was shipped with erroneous information on the box and is a step backwards from an already existing camera.

I'm still seriously thinking about getting it because all of the things that he mentioned don't bother me at all. Especially because there was an update for the 1080p.
I'd NEVER use 4k because I'm not trying to deal with those file sizes. I once DITed where they were using either an Arri Amira or a Red and 4k was the biggest pain in the ass ever. Yes, your footage looks sweet but it's not worth the pain in the ass to edit.

Sounds like the marketing Dept. sat around a board room and came up with a camera which they could sell to people who always wanted a "GoPro" but could never afford one, and didn't really care about the specs.
So when a teen asks "Daddy, I want a GoPro for Christmas" the dad will go to the store and buy the cheapest GoPro he can find. He'll think, "This one is new, and it has a cheap price".
And on Christmas morning, the kid will open up their present and think, "Wow, I now own a GoPro", and everyone will be happy.
Yeah I agree it’s just a way to sell people something inferior by hoping people don’t notice.
If this camera were in a vacuum I wouldn’t be as mad but the hero 2018 from a few months ago was better in almost every way but was the same price 👎

@@TheEverydayDad - Same retail price yes. But the White is much cheaper to manufacture than the Hero2018/Hero5. That's why Hero2018 was the shortest GoPro product ever. It did not make them a meaningful profit.

For anyone thinking about getting one, remember your actual ability in film making is far more important.....you could have the best camera in the world but if you fail to make good shots/scenes what's the point. Likewise have a camera that even records in 720p but make some great angles, some great transitions and stuff then that'll be far better

But he's wrong on a few things. He says it's stuck in 1440, which is false. You can swap between 1440 and 1080
At the time the video was made there was no 1080p mode.

So yeah this is what happened to me. Got it as a bday gift, saw it was lying on the box, said wtf, looked up to see firmware updates saw update for 1080p true in December. Keeping the receipt tho cause I will return it in if that update is late or doesn't come out. Lying bastards 😉

My stomach went into knots once I saw this, then I realized that I ordered Hero 7 Black limited Edition which is white not the go pro 7 white.... dodged a bullet there.
The white is basically the 2018 hero but without true 1080p. Without the front screen. Without the removable lens and battery.
Yeah I forgot to mention that! They also took away the front screen for some reason?

GP had to keep the manufacturing prices down in order to make a higher profit. So they cut a few corners. Removing the front screen was one of them. Along with the lens. Nick mentioned that they plan on limiting a few accessories in 2019. So that might be 1 of them.

I got this camera for Christmas and it's really not that bad. It does the job and has pretty good photo and video quality with a lower price tag so it's perfect for me. I could see someone who is a camera enthusiast or photographer not enjoying it, but it's perfect for someone like me who knows that they won't be using it on a daily basis and mostly for vacations.
This is my first and the only GoPro I could get with money and I love it so if ur thinking of getting this camera go ahead

It's true...I do have a piece of junk like that one.. when is frozen have to wait until the battery drain to restart that garbage...I can't call that a camera... sometimes I just want to smash it with a sledgehammer 😔

The intended market would damage a hero black by allowing water to enter the battery compartment, would mess up their settings, would have no idea what to do with 4k files, would lose the lens casing or remove it only to scratch the lens underneath by improperly cleaning it, would put the wrong type of SD card and then complain it's broken because they can't use some features and the list goes on.
The white is really expensive for what it is and still there is really nothing on the market that offers the same features including ease of use.
Only a very few other cameras below this price range offer similar IQ regardless of resolution and all of them have issues, either losing system time and date when changing batteries or requiring android phones to be put into airplane mode to properly connect to them.
All of them need cases to be waterproof and at 1080p, they usually last half the time on one replaceable battery as the white lasts on it's internal battery and all of them have an insane amount of pointless settings and unfit accessories like remotes that are not waterproof.
This is a simple camera for those that need it including as a gift for grandpa, for a child, for the other half that has no time to mess around with settings.
Meanwhile prosumers who fancy themselves videographers are suddenly struck unable to crop something down to 16:9 or to change the FOV that way. Using the hero black and changing the battery while software adjusting FOV and going up to 4k does absolutely nothing to make more valuable or watchable walking around with a selfie stick and talking to yourself.
It’s not that bad. I use it about once or twice a month and I have zero issues. I always have a portable charger so the battery is not an issue. It also shoots in 1080 60 or 30.
I wish I saw this 24hrs earlier. On a whim I bought a Hero7 White because it was ridiculously cheap online. Like stupid cheap. But now I'm thinking regardless of the discount. I received it, realised there is no 4k option, let alone the shortfall of the non-removable battery as well as the resolution and aspect ratio issues, that I have learnt have been remedied with an update.... the lack of ability to connect external mics has also made it a useless camera for me, which will be forced to be my onboard camera while the vlogging will still be done on my Hero 4, which shoots in 4k and can connect an external mic to it easily. I can carry extra batteries and do mid-shoot battery swaps.
Sure, I made a purchasing error. So I'll likely flip this thing and use that money to buy a better model where I'll do more research next time. Derp! I genuinely didn't think GoPro would go backwards like that. That is the complete opposite of progress. Seriously..... TF? GoPro!

I decided to save the extra $200 this time and go with the Hero 7 White myself. This is my 2nd GoPro [last one was a Hero 3+ which was top of the line when I bought it years ago] I will use the Hero 7 white for shooting Motorcycle video. At 1080p with the update It looks like it will serve well for that purpose.

You forgot to include the Hero 7 Silver too. About the same characteristics, even your favorite non-removable battery... Better to find a Hero 6 slightly used, or a brand new for $ 50 more than Silver model.

Overall, the Hero 7 White is good at recording. But I was very discouraged and disappointed when I found out it can’t record and charge at the same time. Because I want to fish and film, and now I feel like this GoPro is worthless.
Me as a photographer have an additional issue with the Hero 7 White: Just jpegs, no raw images, for that you have to grab the Hero 7 Black. Seriously, GoPro? I can grab a Yi 4k Plus for about the same price as a Hero 7 *White* here! So why should I even bother with it?
Oh, and about the entry-level vlogging camera showdown you did a few weeks ago: In local stores around here you can get the EOS M100 with 15-45 kit lens for about 300 Euros sometimes, so at that price point I'd maybe prefer it over the a5100 or the Lumix. But at the usual price I'd prefer the Lumix: More lenses, and for me as a photographer: A Viewfinder! And a dial where you can adjust the shoot mode directly: one shot, 4k timelapse, bracketing, timer. How cool is that?

@@TheEverydayDad And it's incredibly versatile and with a proper grip on the body. I love cameras with actual grips. I tried the M100 with a 50-200 lens on it. Well, it was *quite* okay, but zooming or focusing manually was a bit difficult. It feels like I need to have three hands: Two to hold the camera firmly and the third one to zoom comfortably. 😅
You don't understand: this is not for you. Not for tech geeks. Not for pros. It is for the wannabe youtubers, children and all of the other regular non-geek people that will never buy anyway a spare battery for any device.
I agree! If You’re going to get a go pro go for the go pro hero 7 black! I got one and reviewed it on my channel, and it’s worth it. Took it to Arches National Park 🏞 and captured incredible footage which I’ll be sharing on my RUclips channel. The lower versions GoPro lack features found in the Hero 7 Black - like 4K, and hypersmooth stabilization.
The Everyday Dad I don’t know who GoPro would highly segment the market like this. It’s akin to producing say a Canon M50 A, B and C, and splitting up the features.
I don’t mind a budget camera, but they already had a better one for the same price earlier this year. That’s one of the most upsetting parts 😡

About the Gopro hero 2018... did you know that there is a very simple firmware Hack that makes it a Gopro Hero 5? With ... 4K !!! Just google "Turning the GoPro Hero (2018) into a Hero 5 Black for 4K!"
I saw that, and even without that hack I think the 2018 is better then the hero 7 white.

So here it is, Wednesday , June 5th 2019 and I FINALLY decide to enter the Gopro game. I mainly wanted a really small camera to take with me to use while working where I make a lot of my youtube videos and I wanted something a little tougher than a point and shoot. I was at Best Buy looking at the Hero 7 white for $199. I was seriously considering it, and almost bought it, but decided I would do a little more research. So, I'm sitting in their parking lot looking at reviews and youtube videos and this one popped up. Remember, I didn't know much about Gopros. So I see the Hero 2018 and it looks like a much better alternative. So I started looking online to see if this camera is even available anymore. Not having much luck, but then, one of my local Target stores shows it in stock. So I head over to see. The girl in electronics checks, but can't find it on her scanner deal. She asks me to pull it up, which I do, and gets some numbers from their website and says it shows one left. She goes to the back and comes out with the last one. As a matter of fact, she said someone bought one about an hour and a half before I did. Looks like one of the few times I got lucky. And thanks to your video, I found out about the Hero 2018. Btw, Target's price was $199 and they price matched the lowest online price I could find, which was $187. Plus I got an additional 5% off for signing up for their credit card. So out the door with tax was $196.45. Not too bad if you ask me.
Don't know WHY anyone would get a Hero 7 White or Silver when all the best features are only on the Hero 7 Black. Kind of a "no-brainer" and didn't need a video to tell me that. I've got the Hero 6 Black and the Hero 7 Black and the difference in stability with the Hypersmooth technology is nothing short of amazing!
make no mistake. GoPro wants to sell you a BLACK. However, many people who wants a GoPro will not get one for 400 or 500 USD. Unfortunatelly GoPro has decided to endulge these consumers by selling a crappy WHITE without any cool features at all.
GrenlandUnderVann In my opinion, GoPro should have never released the White and Silver versions. I lucked out with the Hero 7 Black. I took advantage of GoPro’s “trade-in” promotion, sent in my 13 year old Olympus digital camera and got $100 off. :)

Yes. The hypersmooth ad has sold me. Having friends that do freeride/downhill mountain biking, I know how insanely bumpy the ride it. Somehow the video is insanely smooth. Like, hypersmooth is legit the future.

The hero 7 black has choppy stabilization. I prefer the White's video it's more fluid.

I believe what’s happening here is is the 1440p it’s set to just extends the field of view from 16:9 1080p to fit a 4:3 screen and doesn’t zoom in at all to do that. So, you could edit a 16:9 video out of the middle of that video and it would be 1080p, wide field of view and you could edit it our from where ever you wanted to. Also, it’s technically higher than 1080p. Because of this, they think they can put 1080p on the box because when non-techys look at the box and see 1080p, they’ll think it’s good quality for a cheap price and want to buy it as they know what 1080p is as a standard. If they put 1440p on there, non-techys might not know what it is and think it’s not very good of a quality and not worth their money.
Still, they shouldn’t lie on the box. In my opinion, they should just give the camera 1080p 16:9 and 1440p 4:3 options so users can record in whichever aspect ratio they want to without having to use a video editor to get the correct crop, as some people might not have one and any free one they use will leave a disgusting watermark, or they just might not know how to use one.
Also, I’m sure they made the HERO7 White to try to trick people into buying it as a budget action camera over the HERO 2018 because it actually restricts a lot of features for the cheaper price, but with the HERO 2018 you can easily unlock the firmware on it, and BOOM! With that error they’ve just allowed you to pay less for a brand new HERO5.
P.S. I have a HERO+ LCD (2014) :P. At least it’s better than the HERO+ (2014) and the HERO (2014). I mean, I got it on ebay for $63.00. And, it was even advertised as the HERO+ (2014) but when it arrived I realised they had actually sent a HERO+ LCD (2014)!

All you just complained about are great features for me, and probably for most regular users out there so thanks for helping me make a decision not to pay for overpriced that I wont even use. My computer, TV or phone can't even play 4K 60fps so why even bother with that.
I’ve got the LCD hero+ and it’s fine for throwing on your helmet for basic action vlogs or your vehicle. Battery life is fine it works well for $150-ish 🤷🏼♂️ I hate that I can’t throw a mic in it and, now that I know the hero white is the same, I won’t be buying that either.

Colours look so SO much better on the Black too. Less saturation and contrast, more natural. Definitely would go for the Black if you could afford it. Thanks for the brutally honest review. Nothing annoys me more than when companies promote a poduct saying it does one thing when really it does another and 1440 is the most ridiculous thing ever especially when you can get cameras around the same price and sometimes cheaper that have more of a standard than the White.

*news flash* the hero 7 white replaced the hero 18 because of people doing that exact trick, HONESTLY the hero 7 white is a good camera that packs a big punch that nobody happens to notice, funny enough even you missed its hidden secrets

Get the hero 2018 and firmware flash it, You'll get a Hero 5 for cheap, You even get 4k30fps

While they're investing money in the Hero White, they've abandoned the Hero Session. Unbelievable....
ALL that and MORE. The app even disconnects your wifi and you have to reconnect and all kinds of things. I have a $40 Vivtar that is better all around, the video is close but not quite as good. but totally good enough FOR Motorycle rides although it's battery time is WAY too short about 40 minutes, and also can not get vivtar to get me another battery.
BAH WELL.
i avoid vivitar at all costs. to call them the mcdonalds of optics/cameras would be an insult to mcdonalds tbh

Tip: you can change the resolution in the editing app called Splice. I changed mine from 4:3 to 16:9
The ad that played before the video was for a bbq grill named treager or something like that. Having seen your tweets and the vid title, all I thought was triggered. 🤣 Wow! they really neutered that paperweight.
I don't think it matters on the white, but the mic adapter uses usb c on the black model.

Yeah it’s a frustrating camera to say the least, I’m pretty excited about Wednesday’s video. It is a chance to beat on this GoPro but it’s also a pretty good showing for the GoPro body.
I’ve had mine for a year. But I haven’t used it for 9 months. Worst thing about it. It locks up randomly, and when I somehow manage to unlock it then it asks for the date and time. 2nd worst thing: It takes ages to boot up before I can even start recording. None of my other cameras takes ages to boot up, they are ready to record as soon as power is on, but not the GoPro. 3rd worst thing: I already applied the firmware updates from December 2018 and waited months for a new update to fix these really glaring issues. 9 months later however they finally came up with an update. Hopefully that fixes all these problems, but in my mind garbage products are sold by garbage companies. This has tainted the reputation of GoPro in my mind and I’m more likely to go with another brand when I come to replace this thing.
