My Grandfather came to Minneapolis from Bergen as a young man and we always had lutefisk when he was alive. He ate it the way Arne likes it. Perhaps we should try making it again. Merry Christmas! Enjoy you so much.

We came from Minneapolis to California, so when my mother found, at the store, this wooden box with heavily salted codfish inside, she was very excited. I remember she soaked it a little while and then can't really remember what she did with it, but I remember we had potatoes, and the next day, she made mashed potato mixed with the leftover lutfisk and fried in a pan.. she called them potato patties.
I love it all. You really made some beautiful dishes for us to get to know you better. Perhaps, someday, you'll show us how you make that pancake. It looks wonderful. Hope you enjoyed your great meals.

Coming from Trinidad in the Caribbean, we also have a salted cod dish we make often on Sundays and usually at Christmas called Buljol. The cod is soaked to remove the salt, shredded and prepared with chopped tomatoes, onion, oil and hot peppers and eaten on a type of bread. Some people cook it and this looks like a great way to try it. Also, LOVE the heart shaped pot!

Love, love, love you two so much. Carlos as you know Christmas cooking normally is assigned to one person, what I mean each person has a special Christmas recipe. We have 4 children each year we celebrate Christmas at one of our children’s home and we all bring our special Christmas dish. As I was born in North Africa with an Maltese father, Italian mother, and an Australian husband we have a multicultural cornucopia of food and the grand children learn all about grandparents (us) and great grandparents Christmas traditions.
By the way the fish looks like baccala, which is one of the dishes we have at Christmas.

    • @ARNECARLOS

I've only had the "jello" lutefisk. Glad to know the version that looks like fish! In Minnesota we butter the lefse and cover it with white or brown sugar. Being the good German that I am, I covered my lefse with potatoes and gravy. The Norwegians think I'm crazy! Have you been ice fishing yet?

    • @captainnibby
      @captainnibby 5 лет назад

Yeah... I'm of German AND Norwegian/Swedish descent... I eat the sugared lefse, or just plain or with gravy depending on my mood, but I won't touch the lutefisk mostly because of it's always like you said "jello". Pickled herring... different story though. And yes, I'm born and raised in MN too.

There's a show written by an American satirist called 'King of the Hill'. In an episode called 'Revenge of The Lutefisk' one of the main characters is VERY incapable of resisting lutefisk -- with crazy results that only a cartoon can have. Thanks for showing how this dish is made -- I want to try some of that pea stew, too! What is your favorite type of tea in Norway? I'm having a sip of some green tea right now, and rewatching some faves on your channel!

Dear Arne and dear Carlos, your lutefisk is soooo similar to the dryed cod that most portuguese eat on the night of the 24 of december for centuries. The best cod is the one that comes from....Norway of course! We clame to have 365 recepies to cook the dryed cod. And now we have 2 more thanks to you. The cod is so important in our gastronomic culture that we have a nice museum in Lisbon, about it. Its quite recent. Needless to say, we only like it after a certain age .... and we drink it with red wine, not with white like other fish...and it's delicious with "jamon iberico"....So cool this video....( oh and let me tell you that some of our traditional knitting desings are so similar to yours as some jewelery made in a particular place here, is like the one that you showed that is made by that nice family in the Southestall series ...) oh man!!!! Great video! Many cultures have "white food" Christmas dinners, often eaten on Xmas Eve. Especially using fish. If you use a lighter fish instead of cod it won't have the strong odor. The "jello" is caused by the lye turning the fat in the fish into soap! lol Also can't be served in real silver because it will damage the finish. Arne's looks like a fish taco lol Can't wait for next week's dessert :) There is a town in Alberta Canada that is the Lutefisk capital of Canada, because of all the Scandi people there. Where I grew up in Thunder Bay Ontario Canada, there were many Finnish people who eat a similar meal. Happy Holidays to the Cook and the Helper ;)

I love cod and eat it often. I think I prefer the Italian version. I do not think I could eat food soaked in lyle. As always you two are a hoot. Looking forward to next week.😀

You can also do fresh cod, prepared in the oven and then with the bacon drizzled on top with the pea stew and the potatoes or served in a lefse as Arne did, as an alternative to fish in lye.

I grew up just south of Minnesota, so all I ever heard were horror stories about the "jello" lutefisk. I'm SO glad to hear that it doesn't have to be that way! I love fish, and now you've encouraged me to go find some. Love the sweaters; and Arne - I totally enjoy your laughter!

I lived in Oslo for 3 and 1/2 years. Loved Norway. I bought the blue sweater in Oslo and still have it. In the whole time I lived there I have never had Lutefisk, my husband had seen it in a Julebord but never tried it, nor wanted too.

I'm Norwegian and we have eaten lutefisk many times, but this is the first time I've seen the preparation of it. My mother didn't like anyone in the kitchen when she was cooking, but I do know she poached the lutefisk. She might have salted and soaked it, but I'm not sure. I do know we all loved the way she prepared it. we had it with steamed new potatoes, steamed vegetables and white sauce.. I always put lots of white sauce on my potatoes and mustard on my fish ;-)

Great vid guys! Thank you for sharing. Lutefisk is delicious and my wife’s family enjoy it. It’s something I hope to prepare for them and this recipe might become our family recipe which I will add to our cookbook with your names on the recipe heading! The sweaters are fantastic!

I'm a bit of a wimp when trying strange things, I have memories as a child of a Scottish dish that would make me run outside to play for hours. However I am going to make the Lamb with cabbage for Christmas eve. Thank you for sharing your time and traditions, I love it. A warm video can be better than a Dram.

Outfield is my favorite breakfast on Christmas morning. I have never had had lutfisk, my family knows how to cook it well. We have it with salt, pepper, Peter and mashed potato with melted butter. Oranges are usually served to clean the palate.

I love watching you two in the kitchen! 😍
Arne reminds me of my husband who is also not big on cooking. He is also the one who passes things and puts them away while I cook. You make a good team!

Love your sweaters (Jackets), I am going to make one for me and my husband after I have finished knitting next Christmas scarves, Doctor Who for my Son Chris, Fleur de Lis and other French designs for his partner Chris (yes, they have the same name and initials) because they spent their holiday in France last year. Tartan for Chris's Twin brother Tony because of Irish and Scotish heritage.

Hi Arne & Carlos, that looks good, love your tradition. Here in Canada, on Christmas eve we eat after the midnight mass, meat pie, ham, cold porc roast and many other foods, not all Canadians celebrate that way. I love to hear traditions from other countries. I am looking forward for next Sunday, for the desert recipe. Have a great week. Hugs. Francine

Tusen takk from LynnAnn Nysted-Ueland-Thomas!!! I'll definitely be baking our lutefisk this year! (I'll still use the drawn butter, but love the bacon idea) My 91yo dad Leonard Nysted thanks you too!!! (baking lefse this next weekend on my Bethany lefse griddle with sticks that grandpa Nysted made me)
