DD Speed Shop with the ignition off you are just going against cylinder compression. With the ignition on you are also fighting against the cylinders firing. My Z28 had a big long duration cam, so I put an ignition kill switch. To start, first get the engine turning over with the starter, then turn on the ignition. Fires much easier.
Dude is competent, skilled, hard working but very easy going - A REQUIREMENT for working on hot rods......MOST interesting is his understanding that he can’t know everything - and defers to his viewers........This is how PRO’s and real heavyweights conduct themselves in any field...... Thanks - well done DD.
Set it up, where you can turn it over, then flip the ignition, on to start!! High torque starter, and a STOUT battery will help! One of the drawbacks, of no vacuum advance!
CORRECTOMUNDO. This is old school all the way. High Torque starter for the high compression pistons and massive battery very close to the starter if you can.
The hard starting: It has dome slugs, so it has some compression, its not going to like pump gas most likely. With the initial advance where its at, its going to hard start. A few things you can do. 1. Back the initial down until it doesn't do that and rely on mechanical advance to get it where it makes power. 2. Hold the throttle open as you crank it. 3. Hit the starter and once its spinning hit the ignition. Been there done that all. You should be able to limit or increase the mechanical advance, I have a couple cars with MSD distributors in them, which allow me to lock the advance (not my favorite method) limit the advance or increase it. If you want to get more advance from it you can extend the slots in the plate a bit, it doesn't take much to make a big difference. It sounds like it will want between 6 and 8 initial, which isn't much. Most of mine are between 10 and 14 and the total advance varies for each one. As long as its not backfiring through the carb or hard starting its where it wants the initial. After market starters can help, the stock ones aren't really intended for something with more than 10:1, and the re-mans are all over the place as far as quality goes. I have had some that needed two vehicles with cables hooked to a full battery just to turn a 400 with low compression. I run CVR starters in most of them now, and I do the Ford solenoid mod so the solenoid on the starter doesn't have power to it constantly. Seems to help. I really need to get the Cuda up here and get to work on it.
I used rebuild starters, alternators and generators. When it backfired with the starter engaged, it kicked back and the torque caused it to break. We once took a 24 volt semi starter and modified it into a funny car blower drive starter.
Go Mopar! Love it sounds great it's like music if it's too loud you're too old. It's a race car man. Getting closer to 57k. Looking forward to the big event
after the second mini starter I broke , it took out 4 teeth off of the ring gear on my 3800 stall torque convertor . Thats when I bought a Mancinni Racing one out of Michigan , never broke that one in 2 stroker engines . great channel Dan , wish I would of caught this back then . I've been out of this hobby since 2008 .
My experience with battery in the trunk required heavy cable and a really strong battery due to power drop running to the front to crank a high compressed big block. Good grounds too.
Im also a Chevy guy. I got to test drive a 70 Challenger RT 440 Magnum/pistol grip 4sp/ triple black in 1989 when I was an Alinement tech. It was in excellent condition and I have loved them every since. Not to mention the Vanishing Point factor.
This episode had it all: Will Dan succeed where the car has fought him tooth and nail? Can Dan learn to love the very cool Challenger even though it has raised his anger level like no Chevy before? Are the neighbors feeling warm and fuzzy over unmuffled exhaust sounds next door? Will Dani make an appearance and help calm Dan down? Will she grab more cervezas and head to the pool as Dan finally snaps? This is like a soap for car guys.."The Dodge in our Lives"
When I was in high school I had a 1970 396 SS nova and I worked at a school bus garage . One of the mechanics adjusted my solid lifter cam and uncorked the headers . It was loud and radical like this but more tame . Man I wish I could go back and buy back that car
That sure does sound like a healthy engine and it looks like you have got a few tips on getting it to start better. look forward as always so see your projects running and driving!!!!
Sounds AWESOME! I had big cam motor once. 83' Firebird, 383 stroker small block chevy... solid lifter 292 .50lift 1.6 roller rockers. IT was an HEI with maybe a module chip and coil, then I added an adjustable vacuum advance & changed the weights and springs on the mechanical to come in quicker. Pretty sure it was at 8 degrees initial and 32 total or maybe 28, I don't recall... in my 96 VHS Burnouts&Boobs vid with my friend 340 Challenger throwing sparks off the tires bro!!
I've had that happen too. Either timing is too far advanced or a plugwire was in the wrong place. When it fires while the piston is still coming up, bazinga, broken starter housing. Looks like they were going to drag race it. (Cool can, manifold type, absence of rubber fuel line, etc...) Sounds like a pretty stout cam also. Love it!
Sounded great, would be nice to leave it like that bit the neighbors would be pissed and the tickets would probably add up quick. Keep up the great work and cant wait to see the 57 videos.
Love it! With higher compression vehicles crank it with ignition switch off and as its cranking pretty good flip the ignition switch and it should fire right up. Maybe try some magnaflow mufflers.
Just crank it with ignition off then flip the switch while cranking..been starting my race cars like that for years..what total advance are you setting it at??
I know on my race engines with the timing set on kick ass. You have to spin the engine over with ignition off then when it is spinning you hit the ignition. And voroom. Awesome job buddy.
Doing a great job on the Challenger!! Not that loud on the video. Looks like things are starting to turn your way. Keep up the good work. Really enjoy your videos!!
I could feel your frustration from here when you were trying to start it. But it runs and moves so that was cool. Thanks again for sharing your Garage Time with us.
There are supposed to be springs to hold the collector to the header pipes. This was to allow you to take the exhaust system apart easily when you're wrenching all the time on a race car.
The ignition timing is a little advanced, so it's firing before tdc slowing the pistons down. One of my cars is set up similar so I can get a bit more advance out of the distributor. Nice series, great that you saved the engine!
Love the Dodge. Seconds on being a Chevy guy but always wanting a Challenger. I rented a 2019 SRT and it was amazing. Think that is the next car purchase. Love all the comments everyone is giving, too funny. Can't wait to see you and Dani Sunday night cruzing with it. Better hurry up it will be winter soon up there in the North Land.
On some high compression engines with the timing locked on the distributor you need to spin the engine over with the starter then turn on the ignition so the compression doesn't put stress on the starter.
Sounds bad ass. I love your cool "whatever" demeanor. My son and I have had a bunch of hot rods over the past 40 years. Nothing is ever easy, but it's always fun.
Mufflers??? We don't need no stinkin' mufflers! Hah ha! You might need a PCV valve though. Timing too far advance will make it crank over hard like that. You also need to put a return spring on the kick down rod. It needs to be pulled forward in the slot. It controls the fluid pressure in the transmission, so it is important. You can adjust the rod to set the shifting points too. I usually set mine to shift 2nd gear approximately at 20 MPH and 3rd gear at 30 MPH. Awesome Mopar you got there! Great job at bring it back to life!
Man I’m still dealing with extremely loud 3 inch exhaust in my chevelle I’ve got 3 inch dual full exhaust over the axle with hooker 3 inch straight through mufflers and with my 10.5:1 compression 355 it’s stupid loud I should’ve used offset in/out mufflers
Key to being a successful car guy: Improvise, don't expect anything to work out, everything takes 10x as long as it should, and throwing money at it doesn't necessarily fix it, so do what this guy does... Keep a good spirit and keep on truckin'!
for street driveability, you will need a vacuum advance. drag distributors are "locked out". mechanical advance only. ie mine is 12* to 38* and all in at launch. vac advance allows part throttle, ported vacuum control over advance. some distributors can be returned to a non lockout with v/a. if a race only distributor, you will have to buy a "street distributor". love the channel. cheers from dawson creek. I did the Ford solenoid mod on 12:1 big mtr chevy after destroying a few starters. As soon as I saw the oil pressure come I hit the ign switch
Had a L88, 12 or 13: to 1, backfires= starter nose r&r. Finally put zippers in to speed up the process....lol....
yeah i gotta start doing that for sure
Im guessing the starting issues are why it was already wired for 2 batteries.
