Believe it or not, Police don't have the time to find a free parallel parking spot 50 meters down the street prior to dealing with people on the job. Surprise surprise. You wouldn't whinge if an ambulance or fire service stopped there. Because it makes practical sense.
if you choose to fight it then fwiw the nyc law is literally "VTL 1236 (c) Every bicycle shall be equipped with a brake which will enable the operator to make the braked wheels skid on dry, level, clean pavement." which a fixed gear drive train fits the letter of. ymmv upon collision with the judge.
@@numbaoneg101 - Nice try, but a brake is defined as a device or mechanism specifically utilized for stopping forward motion. According to your logic I really don't need all those nasty brakes on my Kawasaki, cuz I can just jam it into first, drop the clutch and skid the rear wheel.
@@akyrabrown - And I suppose a genius spends his time lurking in year-old threads. I've had a number of bikes over the decades, including my Carabela Profesional (not a misspelling) track bike (think "fixie"), which I sold ten or fifteen years ago. I'm one of exactly one people I know who would take a track bike on a century ride in Texas hill country. I'm well aware of several different types of vehicle. And because I've put quite a few miles on various bikes, including track bikes ("fixies"), I'm also very aware of the limitations of track bikes - and there are limitations. For a good part of the pedal stroke, your legs won't be positioned for stopping - your going to have to wait for the crank to rotate for your legs to be in a position to effectively slow you - and that won't be evenly applied braking, again, because your legs don't apply power evenly through the entire pedal stroke. You can skid the rear wheel once your legs are in position, but skidding is bad braking, and by definition, you have lost some control. A brake is a dedicated, single-purpose device. Full stop. I don't care what kind of vehicle it's on. I'm also of the opinion that all adult bikes should have one brake per wheel if they're going to used in public. The fact that we allow adult coaster-brake bikes with no front brake is a regrettable oversight. In the case in the video, that bike had no brakes. Simply being able to slow, or even lock a wheel (which is ineffective and bad braking, btw) has nothing to do with the fact that the bike was not equipped per the statute. If you want to operate a vehicle in public, comply with public regulations. Genius.
Hello Andy, firstly that 2nd dropoff the building was amazing, I think it was on Broadway. I hope those "two bowzos" don't turn up to some alley cat race, they will have a field day! But seriously, I have been racing on fixed gear on the velodrome on indoor and outdoor tracks serious since 1994. I have ridden fixed on the road once with front brake and even then i found it scarey. When I see you ride in between vehicle i hope no one walks out on you and at major junction i fear cars coliding with you. You are no doubt far more skilled than me on a bike, but I hope you remain safe and upright. I mean that with sincereity. Best wishes.
You should have just owned it. Honor means honest. Simple. Without it, you're just another kid on a bike who prolly shouldn't play in the street. The street got no net.

17:26 dude, you pulled yourself over.... that was teh utmost stupid move ive seen in a long run, like begging to get tickets! And as a side note, the people you crash into cause you couldnt stop your bike fast enough care about you having brakes. Just like in one of your own videos (THE DAY I CRASHED ON MY CINELLI VIGORELLI SHARK) where you could have easily avoided that crash, no matter who had the right of way, if you hadd brakes.
Some of yall might not agree and These cops ticketing easy people and should catch actual bad guys i know that but at the end of the day if one breaks the law, no matter how minor it is once you get caught its totally your fault and you are supposed to keep quiet and cooperate because its your mistake after all,
Bruh the cop was just having the powertrip of his life. Got caught one time and since I installed a front brake as a decoy. No ticket after 3 years... They want people to be more ecofriendly but we have cops on our asses.
There's nothing to plead. He's breaking the law by not having the required equipment. At the end he literally admits already getting a ticket for not having brakes.
I respect what you do and I am sorry that the policeman harassed you. It is seriously concerning that while illegal electric bicycles, electric scoters, electric skateboards, and electric single wheel hoverboards exceed speed limits in the city and a lot of them are reckless causing accidents for others are left without tickets. There isn't a day that goes by that I get cursed at for biking in the correction direction while an electric bicycle goes the wrong direction at almost twice my speed. The police seem to stop those that they can easily catch. I would argue one of the tickets with the bicycle wheel reflectors. Most bicycles don't come with it. Front and rear lights check the box. Good luck with the tickets. Been there done that :(
Maybe If they built better bike infrastructure then people wouldn't be doing that, but that's what brings the money in so they definitely wouldn't advocate for better infrastructure
@17:50 Aside from the fact that there are certainly more serious crimes than riding a bike without reflectors, your statement "my safety shouldn't matter to you" is ignorant. Riding a bike without a complete braking system puts other road users at risk. In the case of a car, your statement will still be correct, but not in the case of a pedestrian. The requirements for a roadworthy vehicle are not an ill-considered thing, but are based on a good century of recorded road accidents and the reasons why they occurred. If you think you have the skills to match your bike, then live them out, challenge yourself and compete with others on the track in a tournament. Do not be so vain and adapt your work equipment to your working conditions.
@@beborosa2210 - Of course, but a fixed gear bike has precisely the same braking system as a kid's tricycle. Only it's worse. Because the kids tricycle is braking the front wheel, which is where most of the weight transfer when decelerating and stopping power should be. The fixie or track bike is trying to brake the rear wheel which is exactly where most of the weight transfer isn't. When you're stopping, your weight transfers to the front from the rear, and if you think you can stop the bike as quickly with just rear brakes then you have had a few too many bike wrecks where you weren't wearing a helmet apparently.
I get you not agreeing with them. But arguing with cops NEVER works. You dug yourself a hole. And I live in New Mexico, cops here are way less nice than NY, lol.
Bicyclists need to follow the laws. I love to ride my bike. I make sure my bike is safe, lights reflectors I also make sure I’m not creating an unsafe environment for others. Ride safe, not in and out of traffic. I wear a reflective vest when necessary I don’t dart in and out of traffic. This guy makes it bad for most of us that ride responsibly. If you want to disrespect a police officer for doing his job, be prepared to pay the price. This officer observed you breaking the law. If he would have observed a crack deal he would have handled that I find if you are respectful to police, they will be more apt to “work with you”. When you choose not to be respectful you learn lessons the hard way

This is stupidity, on your behalf. Your bicycle wasn't up to spec. You know this. They know this. They wouldn't have had a problem with you if you didn't go out of your way to not only 1. Stop and confront Police, and 2. Film it. You're right, Police do have better things to do, but you didn't give them a choice. You committed an offence. You pleaded that you weren't on the bicycle. Police explained to you that that was irrelevant as you were observed on the bicycle. Instead of listening, you ignored and argued. Police then asked for your ID. A lawful request due to the fact that you committed an offence by cycling on a public road without the required breaks / lights / reflectors (This is a public safety issue. And you have already had crashes in the past that could have been avoided). You refused to provide your ID. The second you refused, you could have been immediately arrested and charged. Instead, the Police requested you to provide your ID a dozen times. Why? Because they didn't want to arrest you. If that's what they wanted, they would have arrested you sooner. It wasn't until you finally realized you were on the precipice of being arrested that you relented and gave your ID. And then the situation was resolved. Now you ask, why did they want my ID?: 1. You approached them. That's your problem. 2. You refused to provide it. Generally there is a reason someone will refuse to provide their ID. Be that a warrant, or a WFQ, or any number of things. The more you refuse, the more suspicion Police will have. Stop wasting people's time. You said it best, Police have better things to do. You don't think they know that? Instead they're sitting there requesting your ID 20 times before you finally give it. The alternative was arresting you, which would have taken hours out of their day, and taken a car off the road for hours. For what? Do deal with pure stupidity. Do better.
Bikers are punished for riding their bikes so much whether its because they aren't in the bike lanes or because of this kind of thing while the cities aren't helping not providing good infrastructure and safe places to ride bikes its unfortunate

if you know they can nail you for something and decide not to do it because "that is the style yo"... no sympathy from me. In the vast majority of places where bikes mingle with traffic you are required to have certain things because you are supposed to act like a vehicle... no brakes, for w/e reason is a massive no. They don't even really need to be too effective and I am sorry your "style" has to take a hit. I got pulled over on my bike because my tail light was starting to fade and was hard to see. They didn't ticket me because it was still working but they wanted to let me know. I appreciated it and picked up new batteries at the next gas station. A simple v-brake is like... $30 and installing it is about as long in minutes...
crazy shit bro, in Russia all police workers dont give a damn on bikes, tbh some of them asked me why I dont have brakes and only one shift and that's all I got in my life as a fixed gear rider. good luck!
It's a fixed bike, meaning the pedals and the wheels of the bike are always turning at the same time. You have to pedal backwards to slow the pedals down to slow the tires.
I would just keep riding. There was a time when i was hauling a trash load in a semi truck from sacremento ca to stockton and when i got to the dump i saw a DOT cop sitting at the driveway scale. I said F NO i went to our yard next door pulled in and sat there for 15 min i saw him drive by wondering where i went. Somtimes you just have to say NOT TODAY

Most states have it so you need at least 1 Brake, for emergency stops. Honestly I get that Fixed Gear is the Point, But at least an Emergency Brake on the Back would be good to have, if your moving pretty fast, You wont be able to stop, In NY Traffic I can understand the concern.

Believe it or not, Police don't have the time to find a free parallel parking spot 50 meters down the street prior to dealing with people on the job. Surprise surprise. You wouldn't whinge if an ambulance or fire service stopped there. Because it makes practical sense.
Yeah USA logic
"For what though" - He told you what, lots of times. Good way to get the tickets piled on.
Exactly. Another idiot giving bike riders a ill rep... Hope he learned.
If it was a safety issue they wouldnt let him ride off lol the pig said "ride safely"
You stopped?
I don’t stop for pigs if I am on a bike! They couldn’t catch me if they was to sit on my handle bars!
FTP!
if you choose to fight it then fwiw the nyc law is literally "VTL 1236 (c) Every bicycle shall be equipped with a brake which will enable the operator to make the braked wheels skid on dry, level, clean pavement." which a fixed gear drive train fits the letter of. ymmv upon collision with the judge.
He just gotta bring a clip of him skidding and he should be good.
Genius.
@@akyrabrown - Yeah. I figured anything more than two sentences would be too complex for you.
Greetings from Germany - same laws here. Police is hunting us with bicycle cops and watching for Fixies without mounted brakes.

Smh the moment you gave the other guy love and support the cops got on you
Some of yall might not agree and These cops ticketing easy people and should catch actual bad guys i know that but at the end of the day if one breaks the law, no matter how minor it is once you get caught its totally your fault and you are supposed to keep quiet and cooperate because its your mistake after all,

why would you install a decoy brake? at that point just have a brake, wtf, its literally safer
This guy is the reason so many people despise the police
Best to stay quiet in situations like this you are better pleadig your case with a judge even though they dont give a shit
Been there done that :(
and literally hits people with his bike all the time because he doesn't have brakes
Should've just given them the ID? Don't understand why that was so difficult?
Do not be so vain and adapt your work equipment to your working conditions.
shut up
That’s retarded
You know you can fucking stop a fixed gear right
@@beborosa2210 - Of course, but a fixed gear bike has precisely the same braking system as a kid's tricycle.
LMFAOOO cops are funny now adays
I get you not agreeing with them. But arguing with cops NEVER works. You dug yourself a hole. And I live in New Mexico, cops here are way less nice than NY, lol.

Well it’s always the same … 1312 nothing else matters !
Bicyclists need to follow the laws. I love to ride my bike. I make sure my bike is safe, lights reflectors
I also make sure I’m not creating an unsafe environment for others. Ride safe, not in and out of traffic. I wear a reflective vest when necessary
I don’t dart in and out of traffic. This guy makes it bad for most of us that ride responsibly.
If you want to disrespect a police officer for doing his job, be prepared to pay the price. This officer observed you breaking the law. If he would have observed a crack deal he would have handled that

Cyclists are easier to harp on. Ppl ride dirt bikes illegally but they just let them go. Very inconsistent.
Well bikes are much faster
@@Solo-696 Still an overall inconsistency.
Cyclists moce considerably faster and generally ride on the roads. Skaters stick to side walks. Simple as that.

Now you ask, why did they want my ID?:
Do better.

Be safe in that part of the city (just off of the Manhattan Bridge on Chrystie Street). I was biking with friends on Chrystie headings towards the bridge and the officer with the beard jumped in his car and sped through several red lights to prevent us from getting onto the bridge so he can give us bogus tickets as well. This is a prime spot for the NYPD and they will always have officers stationed there.
It's all about the dollar!
Weird thing about a brake; it makes you faster, a lot faster. Going brakeless is slooow.
If you need to be braking hard as delivery rider than you are doing wrong, you modulate your speed so you can be going smoothly and in harmony with the traffic. Not accelerating and stopping all the time.
I ride brakeless fixed every day too. You obviously know as well that is not legal…. It is how it is. Just accept it and try to avoid them just as i do ;) cheers
if you know they can nail you for something and decide not to do it because "that is the style yo"... no sympathy from me.
$30 and installing it is about as long in minutes...

so how do you stop without breaks? also curious why you dont use reflectors? the bell is stupid because bike bells wont be heard by cars anyway.
It's a fixed bike, meaning the pedals and the wheels of the bike are always turning at the same time. You have to pedal backwards to slow the pedals down to slow the tires.
that bar tape is fire
I would just keep riding. There was a time when i was hauling a trash load in a semi truck from sacremento ca to stockton and when i got to the dump i saw a DOT cop sitting at the driveway scale. I said F NO i went to our yard next door pulled in and sat there for 15 min i saw him drive by wondering where i went. Somtimes you just have to say NOT TODAY
imagine riding off and calling the cop a bozo after u rode up on them and started shit with them. Even after the cop was more lenient than he had to be and only wrote u for 1 tire reflector instead of both.

There is some kind of hate that fixed riders have with the police, that random youtube guys can't understand. WELL DONE MY FRIEND, GOOD WORK.
Are bikes sold in NY with a bell? Seems to me the cops gave you tickets for being confrontational. Not sure how riding with a fixed gear isn't considered a brake when I have bikes with coaster brakes that work identically.
Not identical. Coaster has brake pads in the hub and isn't putting the chain as much tension to stop
I mean you ride a set of wheels with a frame, nothing else, and in the traffic all the time. Don't you think you need to comply with the rules?

Most states have it so you need at least 1 Brake, for emergency stops. Honestly I get that Fixed Gear is the Point, But at least an Emergency Brake on the Back would be good to have, if your moving pretty fast, You wont be able to stop, In NY Traffic I can understand the concern.
Earlier this morning, this guy popped up in my reccomendeds with a video of him barreling through an intersection and T boning another cyclist a year ago, displaying exactly why this is a dumb idea and why you shouldn’t do it. Then, not long afterwards I get this one, all but confirming that you learned absolutely nothing, and you won’t stop until something bad happens. It felt good to watch the pigs take your bike away from you.
I kept watching, and learned you were missing 3(!) major safety features apparently required by law. And you’ve been ticketed before!? Come on, man. Rub two brain cells together. Also, getting off your bike is not like going in your apartment in GTA.
