  • My favourite lens has been my favourite lens for many years. Across different brands and different formats, one focal length has stood out and in this video, I reveal just what it is.

    My most important step was taking just one lens at a time with me when ever possible.
    Yes, the eye adapts to this lens and you get more keepers than with carrying around an arsenal of lenses.

    Excellent thoughts. Your extensive experience plus your thoughtful approach hit the mark again.
    Ok, I myself am drawn to many different genres of photography but yes, the fascination and benefits of primes are very real.
    Too bad I can’t decide 😂

    Still use only primes... Zoom are very good nowdays, but I find them distracting and I think more about zooming in and out than about composition. The "limitations" of a prime (I often go out with just one of them) is refreshing and free the mind from anything that's not the framing and the light.
    In limitations we truly discover the most potential.
    At least that's my two cents. 😉

    "I dont show to much affection to just one lens; helps to keep all the other lenses happy and jealous free!
    I find 35mm a good goldylocks range, not to tight;not to wide!..Good vid, cheers," Kev.

    You always get me thinking. I have just had a quick glance at my last 1200 pictures just over 2/3 are on a 24-70 (f4) of which half are about 35-45 mm. The other 1/3 are on a 70-200 (f4). These tend to be at the extreames. I also have a 14 mm and 24 mm (both manual focus), which I occasionally use for astro. The other prime lense I have is a 40 mm (f2.8). I have recently started to use it more. I do like that one. If you asked me which lense I use the most I would have said the 70-200. I may take more pictures with it, but I get rid of most of these. Thank you for posting

    Hi Craig, when I bought my first Camera It came with the 18-55mm and 55-200mm kit Lens. And the first Prime Lens I bought was the Nikon 50mm F/ 1.8, and the second Prime Lens I bought was the Nikon 35mm F/ 1.8. I've got to say my 35mm Lens is my favourite. Thanks for sharing this video.

    Well said ... I strongly agree with you. 35 mm is my popular angle of view. I like that it is slightly wider then standard 50 mm but not too wide, that distortion gets pronounced.

    Tip: Take a pencil an make some sketches of your favorite scenes -- just using ovals, trapezoids and some lines will do. It will teach you, how you really see the scenes, what your vision of the world is. Then choose your lenses accordingly.

    While my first camera (Nikon F2A) didn't have a kit lens, but I started out with a 50 f/1.8 too, some 45 years ago. Although the 24-70 f/2.8 of the holy trinity becomes my often used lens in the latter years, with 40mm being the most frequently used focal length for two decades via EXIF statistics. Hence, I start to use my Nikon Z 50 f/1.2 S more and more.

    I also started w/ a 50mm lens on an old Pentax Spotmatic - and it seems I never lost that point of view. I keep trying the 35mm lens equivalent and when I review the images there is often a lot of wasted junk around the edges of the frame that my eyes didn't catch in the viewfinder, and when I raise the camera to my eye I find myself having to walk up on the subject. It's not that I can't take a good image with the wider lens, it just doesn't seem as natural. I'll keep trying.

    My most often used lens is Panasonic 20 1.7 II, but probably because it the only prime (and best optically) lens I have. I tried setting specific (17, 25) focal lengths on my kit zooms, but it does not stick for long. Time to start saving for another good prime.

    I'll recommend the Viltrox 13mm f/1.4 for Fuji x-mount -- if that's not too wide? -- as a quality option at a fraction of the price of comparable Fuji lenses.

      Yes, I was thinking the same. It is my current challenge. A great lens but you have to learn to use that focal length. What I like about it is the close focussing distance - it is a different kind of ultra-wide lens.

    • @CWReace
      @CWReace Год назад

      @@malteplath Yeah, my favorite thing to do with it is get close to something, then have that wide, bokeh-ish background give context to the subject. 🙂

    Did you ever use the sigma 16mm on your Olympus camera? I'm considering it over the Olympus 17mm 1.2

    • @alex-reay
      @alex-reay Год назад +1

      The Sigma is designed for APSC and apparently suffers from CA and fringing on Oly bodies. The smaller Olympus 17 1.2 suffers from nothing, it’s outstanding and begs to be shot wide open. I also have the tiny Panasonic Leica 15 1.7 which is fantastic as well, optically it sits between the Oly 1.8 and 1.2.

    Have you tried 40mm (27mm for Fuji cameras)? If I could only have one focal length, it would be 40.

    I came from the same background of you 50mm with my first SLR a Pentax ME super followed by 35-70 zoom. I did shoot mainly prime with that camera either 24mm or 135mm two extremes maybe. When I moved to auto focus with Canon it did come with zoom but still preferred primes and still mainly wide angle 24mm and 50mm again the same f1.4 canon although I did also pick up the 35mm which tended to be my wider goto. Moving to MU43 started with the 20mm but was not quite wide enough now back with the 17mm which when using a prime is my most used still use the 12 and 25 but not as much. The Canon 24 mm tilt shift was a great lens and the 1st L lens I had loved it!

    You are almost there but a Leica with 35mm lens would put you on the top of photographers. Just that little Red dot would make you a Master. Oh, you need some colourful clothes, some funny hat and a Billingham bag. Oh sorry, you already have one.
