Here's a bit of trivia if anyone is interested. Doncamatic was the name of the Rhythm Machine released by Keio Gijyutsu Kenkyujo (later renamed Korg) founded by Tsutomu Katou. Katou was a submariner in WWII. Daley cruising in a submarine and coming across WWII wreckage doesn't seem a coincidence to me. In fact, Katou was the asked by Gorillaz to record the vocal sample of "Doncamatic" which is heard in this song. Just a bit of nerding-out. I don't claim to have the full story worked out, just wanted to point out some connections. ✌️

Side note, the Doncamatic single was released November 2010, and Tsutomu Katoh passed away the following March, 2011. It was his last recoding. I believe the same sample can be found in the preset samples that come with the Korg Volca Sample.

I remember when this first came out and there were people who mocked the song and said it was terrible and a lot of that had to do with a guy who had such high vocals and now the comments are about how cool it is the guy has such high vocals. Times have changed and I'm here for it.

i ADORE how at 2:15 daley's vocals become more high and prolonged, which, if you were just listening to the song, you'd probably think it was just to make the chorus sound better and less repetitive. BUT when you watch the music video and note how his character is becoming increasingly stressed, it really adds more weight.
p.s. daley's voice is literally angelic. it's like the audio equivalent of a honeycomb milkshake.

That "Talk to me, talk to me, talk to me" part is so addictive, idk why. The animation is fluid, the art is nice, the vocals sound great. Honestly wish 2-D/Damon had more lines rather than just those three words a few times.
I think the lack of lyrics is the reason why the animation could be so fluid, it probably allowed them to focus more quality into that single animation loop
I'm impressed with this guy's high vocals. And the music video overall is just satisfying to watch.

Daniel PadronCenteno yeah their record label at the time made them make a radio friendly song for money that’s why it’s a single and not on the album so the record label knew this would be hit so they used the money for rhinestone eyes video on this song instead that’s why rhinestone eyes is only a story board video

I’ve been on a Gorillaz kick recently. Last week it was Saturn Barz, Aires before that, Andromeda, etc.
This is my kick this week. So many good songs. I love this band. Daley is such a good singer, wish his Spotify was more populated.
It would be really funny if Gorillaz collaborated with Daley again in the future and he's just like "Oh yeah, that was my glasses I lost back at Plastic Beach. Must have floated up to some random skeleton."

I believe this video had a bad reputation for fans at the time since the music label cut their budget and canceled a few videos that were planned, and released this instead, which had only a few seconds of animation
It was super polarizing back in the day, people were furious that the Rhinestone Eyes video got cancelled for this. It’s a great song though and time has been kind to it

Most underrated gorillaz song
i have a theory, singing is source of some energy in world of gorrilaz, as we see in this video, Daley's submarine is only powered when he sings, and when he stopped singing lights in submarine started blinking like with lack of power, we also can see power of songs in "on melancholy hill" musicians have their submarines all powered by songs, and in "stylo" their car became faster only wen they started singing fully, and as we see, shark submarine started to drown because they stopped singing. in "dirty harry" we can see same pattern, as when they stopped singing car broke and stopped running, also we see this power in "fell good inc." and "el manana" as the windmill flies with a song, and when song stops in el manana it starts falling, and in "19-2000" we see that car speeds up very much as noodle starts singing
Daley couldn't talk to 2D because according to the Gorillaz Wiki, Daley's sub is music powered. So if he were to stop playing the music, he would sink.

its been years but this song is still one of my absolute favorites almost entirely because of 2ds little bit. i dont know what it is about the way he says "talk to me", but its so hypnotic. and the animation on the screen just adds to that, its mesmerizing! this entire song is just stunning

I’m a more recent fan, and there is something about this song that itches my brain in a good way! Daley’s voice is so beautiful, and the sounds in this song sound great too. Plus, the music video is so cool! I love the way he’s just jamming out in the sub, and the animation on 2-D is amazing as always. I love this song so much! ❤

disagree. Years ago, when I was at about 5th grade (5/11 year of school, 10-11 years old), the boys were kidding with the girls, and my best friend Max accidentally... hmm... injured his liver. He was running away from ragging girl, got to jump over an old trench at the school territory, but eventually had slipped off a mossed concrete edge and hit another one with his belly, and fallen into this fully grown nettle trench. Got to intensive care clinic unit (if I call it right, we just call this "reanimation", in other words my friend got serious injury). When he was on reabilitation phase at his god fathers home, I and on of our classmates Vityok went to visit him. Vityok has elder brother, who have cool tastes in music, thus Vityok sometimes told about some artists his brother was listening to. So this time, at Max's visiting, he convinced us to watch some cool Gorillaz music clip on youtube, telling about interesting visual style and nice electronic music. We were trying to find some sort of dessert video, as Vityok said, and had found Stylo (actually he meant Dirty Harry, that I had stummbled upon much later on tv). And I must say we all, three of us, were fucking amased in one shot of this cooling essense. Though my taste was growing on trash metal first of all, I liked Gorillaz a lot and listened to them a lot since. And I have a, let us call it, level 1 (chronologically first) nostalgy about Gorillaz (not music) experience, next to Metallica and Shiller ones... So thats why I disagree)

Albarn and Daley recorded it right after Plastic Beach was released, but loved the results so pushed the track out as a single.
