@@Anykindahandle so what... Anthony Kiedis rocked a whole tour playing only the open E string on the most ugly Strat I've ever seen.... free your mind and your ass will follow! ;-)
Yeah they're totally different people. John ended up like lobotomized by his junkie years and consequent rehab. I prefer a lot the 1990-1992 era not just for the musical part of it but also because it shows young John's musical integrity and incorruptibility. But this is just my opinion.
Mattia Di Fatta I totally agree. I've read Anthony's opinion through "Scar Tissue", where he says John really didn't want to be there. Unless John is an amazing actor, his body language is saying otherwise. John even credited Anthony for the basis of a song that he clearly holds in high respect...how cool is that?
TheOunceler Well of course it would have been better if young John was cool with being in the band like older John but what I'm talking about is his solid music principles that somehow faded with time. Young John is such an interesting person and he went thorough so many phases in just 4 years! :)

This video has entirely changed the way I listen to music. At 2:16, John says, "Don’t get your mind in that position where you’re just judging each song for whatever you can get out of it. Just listen to it for what it is." That's actually really profound. I used to look down my nose at 95% of the music I heard (including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, unfortunately) because I thought they were "sell outs" or they weren't in one of the genres that I liked, or I didn't like the sound of the singer's voice, or whatever, but I realized I was sort of comparing every song to a standard of what I thought good music was, and if it didn't meet that standard, I would dismiss it. And the middle part to me is the most exciting part, when John does a solo" He went on more in depth about what kind of songs he's into : "I'm not so much of a funky riff man, I'm more of a 'song' man, I like good songs, like they did in the late 90's when John rejoined the band. By The Way, and Californication and the whole Stadium Arcadium album, those had really good songs, I'm just more of a fan of that, more melodic. [...] It's just a taste, it doesn't mean anything, like I said on the boat it's not really important. These sort of repetitive riffs, it just doesn't do it for me, I'm more interested in melodies." He then sent me a link to a RUclips video of Wet Sand, adding : "I like this song a lot. So much happening melodically. Even towards the end of the song a whole new melody is introduced." There you have it folks. M. it's funny to see how Bram van Splunteren gets into conflict with musicians. His Pinkpop Danzig interview, and also Pinkpop with Mike Patton have always been stuck in my memory. I think most of the triggers are because he himself is not a musician. He makes documentaries which can be like nice conducted compositions in themselves. But the analogue to a sexy, horny groove that just makes your ass wiggle - as a musician, makes you wanna also play it, become the groove - this kind of analogue isn't there for a director of documentaries. Another gem. What a fantastic time to be discovering music. I remember buying this album on tape when I was sixteen and having to play it at my grandmother's house because I didn't have a player. Fond memories.
Yeah, he's awesome. Kind of cheeky but also a bit shy, very excited to be playing in his favourite band and being friends with them, doing kind of crazy things like a kid that age does. The drug thing changed him a lot, now he's even more humble and dedicated and mellow (in person, not on stage, he's still crazy on stage) and spiritual. He was always intelligent but now he just seems sorted, not angsty or confused, but accepting, willing to do his own thing.
I watched this for the first time last night. I had to come back to re watch it 'cause I was still thinking about how unbelievable it was that someone doesn't like Funky Monks. But dude likes the rest of the album? What??
octotartine it’s funny because you could picture Flea doing/saying the exact same thing and Anthony would be loving it. It’s just that it’s coming from your dead friend’s replacement who’s basically a kid in terms of size/attitude, but with a talent that can outshine the band. That’s why Kiedis couldn’t help but be resentful/short tempered with John

Thanks!
How can you dislike John? he is the fucking man, I love how he gets so excited to explain how funky monks came up... masterpiece!!
Another gem. What a fantastic time to be discovering music. I remember buying this album on tape when I was sixteen and having to play it at my grandmother's house because I didn't have a player. Fond memories.
90s chili peppers interviews are the meaning of life
Aight John is officially the funniest guy ever
Yeah, he's awesome. Kind of cheeky but also a bit shy, very excited to be playing in his favourite band and being friends with them, doing kind of crazy things like a kid that age does. The drug thing changed him a lot, now he's even more humble and dedicated and mellow (in person, not on stage, he's still crazy on stage) and spiritual. He was always intelligent but now he just seems sorted, not angsty or confused, but accepting, willing to do his own thing.
Man, i love how john couldn't play what anthony came up with without making it sound awesome
How can anyone not like that bassline outro let alone the whole freaking song damn right john!
Legendary piece of video :D
The rhythm is honestly so raw and genius I love it. No fully correct chords but with some subtraction it’s funky as ffff
"Badu dadum bam pam parapa pa bah"- Confucius probably
I watched this for the first time last night. I had to come back to re watch it 'cause I was still thinking about how unbelievable it was that someone doesn't like Funky Monks. But dude likes the rest of the album? What??
1:26 My friends whenever I've finished playing one of my songs for them that they didn't ask to hear
John's interpretation of Flea's outro is fucking fantastic. His whole reaction was awesome.
I feel so bad that he doesn't like Funky Monks.
00:44 Anthony looks so annoyed xD
"Getting real sick of your shit, John."
- Anthony Kiedis every day during the BSSM era
octotartine it’s funny because you could picture Flea doing/saying the exact same thing and Anthony would be loving it. It’s just that it’s coming from your dead friend’s replacement who’s basically a kid in terms of size/attitude, but with a talent that can outshine the band. That’s why Kiedis couldn’t help but be resentful/short tempered with John
Frusciante is fucking amazing here! Thats the best John Frusciante
