I love how they actually respect black culture when it comes to acknowledging where their sound came from. Being in 2019 and understanding how people see cultural appropriation vs appreciation, I'd say that the RHCP have ALWAYS payed homage and respect to the musicians who influenced them. They include them in their videos, talk about them in their interviews and actually approached them for approval and advice in order to develop their funky sound.
I 100% agree with you that this is how it should be but this isn't something exceptional people like Hendrix have always been respected by anyone who plays guitar.
And heroin haha. For real though both. Even though you can see the heroin in his eyes and here it in his voice, you can also tell he had a lot of love for this world. He really didn't deserve to go so soon, and definitely not in that way. RIP Hillel
Flea made a good point. The white audience didn't want to hear the funk and the black audience probably wouldn't listen to the rock. I think a lot of funk artists like Parliament, Bootsy Collins, etc. they're really underrated. I know people throw out the word 'underrated' but these guys never get the credit or respect they deserve for the funk. This is also what gave RHCP a unique sound I think, the funk influence is evident in their music and makes them a great band today.
Wow, the Chili's had real enthusiasm for their idols. These cats were real students of the FUNK, and it showed in their music and their gleeful faces when they observed their funk heroes.
Would've been interesting to see where the band went had Hillel survived.. He seems more mature and more self assured than the other two. He has his own mind about what he likes and doesn't like, for example when Flea makes the Aerosmith comment. You can really see, against his cool demeanor that Anthony and Flea are like children acting out constantly "Am I cool yet?!".. Hillel was the real cool.
Hillel was the leader for sure. My older brother caught them in Daytona when I was too young to go 'barely' and hung out. Good times. He has a pic of him and the band to this day. They are out on the beach all high standing there with solo cups. I mean down high.
Hillel was their best guitar player in all the years, no doubt ... But Fleas comment at the end: " ... to funky for white man and to rocky for black men " . I think both bands, Parliament and the Chilies ran into that problem ...
I love the chillies but this as blatant as a Nirvana interview. Their high. Flea is super groovy at the start like doesn't know if he should talk, Anthony is faster that the roadrunner and Hillel is very deep and sharing. Let's. It all forget the Jack Iron is having a good stretch. I don't think Hillel is the leaders I think he just a very fair and democratic person.
i cant even describe how the chilis make me feel. Their music and story as a band is overpowering. It actually makes my heart heavy because theyre such a beautiful band and i was never part of it. But as the chlis would tell you themselves, you gotta live your own life and live your own funk!
yeah, i love the red hot chili peppers for.. introducing me (and others) to that funk music, now its definitely one of my favourite genres. definitely super glad for them as a whole
Gosh, I love them so. Rest in peace, Hillel. You're always on my mind. Also, on a random side note, my ex was almost named Bootsy at birth after the one and only. 😂😂😂
word man I feel the same way. I can listen to all there albums as much as I want, but ill never know what it feels like to grow up like, WITH them, as in follow them throughout the years as a part of my life.
hearing hours of John and Josh speak in interviews and singing nice tenor vocals with the chilis and in their solo careers, it's oddly refreshing to hear fucking BASSY Hillel - WAY lower than I pictured - if he had survived and John joined as a second guitarist or something, coulda gotten some kickass vocal harmonies going
I feel so bad for Jack. I think he was going through a rough patch at this point, didn't feel like talking I guess. I can relate, but I'm glad he's better now. Plus, that hat is awesome. This is one of my favourite RHCP videos. Their enthusiasm is just amazing. Their music is everything to me and I totally feel like they do when talking about Sly, Bootsy, Funkadelic, etc. Minus the drugs. RIP Hillel. We love you.
They didnt sell out. They matured. Their music has changed. A band cant sound the same for 25 years. It gets boring. They arent afraid to try new vibes and ideas. If its the funk you're worried about... its still there. its just more together. Example : Ill Be Your Domino.
Ive always been interested in the so-called quiet members of the band because they say so little, making me curious about their personalities. That said, I always thought Jack Irons was the coolest RHCP member in some respect.... they need more Jack interviews from when he was with the Peppers!
Sly Stone's music is the bible, is holy ... shit I should have met Hillel earlier ... Sly was the greatest musician of the 60's and 70's ... but hardly anyone realized this ... not to mention Bootsy and Parliament ...
The video clip of Bootsy they were watching comes from the tail end of a episode of a TV Show called Rockschool. You can the watch the entire episode here on RUclips.
When I watch these videos now, I wonder how much of Anthony's fast talking is youthful exuberance or just cocaine chat. Because along with that, ecstasy and speed back in the day, I've talked some talk. Not all of which made any sense at all! lol
this is fucking awesome, such young guys, yet so fucking humble. Giving back to those who gave the funk to us all. It's no wonder these guys made it big... they fucking LOVE the music. not trying to be rock stars, just loving the fucking grove.
there music taste just expanded they didnt forget about funk...the band and frusciante in particular just gained a further appreciation for rock n roll
@efwb That is a version of "Tear the Roof off the Sucker" Which he co-wrote with George Clinton & Jerome Braley. It is off the the Mothership Connection album.
i was always thinking that flea came old to this world .. but in this video he looks very young.. i think i have to change my point of view..loool... RGCP... i love you thanks for the nice music... john Frusciante come back again plz.
@alexgoettge I've posted links for Bootsy's videos on your channel If U're looking for the first one they're wathcing, that's Sly and The Family Stone- "Higher" ( Woodstock maybe)... And the 3rd one is Parliament Funkadelic's "Coming round the mountain"
I wonder how the 1988 chili peppers would react to the music they made in the decades following. Id really like to see their reactions to it, as if they were listening to another great band that inspired them as they are doing here.
"...Too funked out to get on White radio, and too rocked out to get on Black radio."
And that's why I love RHCP. Thanks for uploading this.
I love how they actually respect black culture when it comes to acknowledging where their sound came from. They are definitely a great example of culture appreciation at its finest
I 100% agree with you that this is how it should be but this isn't something exceptional people like Hendrix have always been respected by anyone who plays guitar.
I love how they played homage to funk, not race, which does now exists unless your hatred wants it to.
Hillel's voice is so buttery, soothing and in general he's just so beautiful :0
I love me some Israeli cowboy
He was a moody puss
Slovakian Israeli man
Hillel's voice is soooo deep. Didn't expect it to be that deep lmfao.
Is it bad that his voice turns me on?
same.
+McKenna Lee haha nasty funky girl
@@raitoyagami72 🤣🤣🤣
This video was taken the same year Hillel died from a heroin overdose. So sad. He seemed so full of life in this video.
And heroin haha. For real though both. Even though you can see the heroin in his eyes and here it in his voice, you can also tell he had a lot of love for this world. He really didn't deserve to go so soon, and definitely not in that way.

Good riddance. I feel no pity for junkies, talented or not.
8 months later but I don't care, fuck you.
+Winston 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡
+Mars Fargo RIGHT!!!!!
They are so high

But all the same in DC, you had Fugazi and Trouble Funk sharing bills and Punk Rock and Funk audiences rocking out together.
Flea looked like a little boy! haha....So young!!
27 yeara
years
You ought to see this 1984 clip on Alan Thicke's show "Thicke of the Night". It's on here somewhere. They look REAL young...Lol!
He looks like my little nephew.
Young Wayne Rooney
Wow, the Chili's had real enthusiasm for their idols. These cats were real students of the FUNK, and it showed in their music and their gleeful faces when they observed their funk heroes.
I really love how genuinely moved by music they all are.

Heroin v coke
If it wasn’t for Hillel, Flea would’ve never picked up a bass. Bless that man, and a shame he died so young and what he could have accomplished.
Anthony came in talking at 100mph hahaha
Hes on the blow
Lol
Yes
😂😂😂
Hillel, beautiful voice and handsome too
25 years today we lost you but your still in are hearts with your great music much love.
I swear I could listen to Hillel's voice all day long.
i owe the chilis so much. firstly, their music is amazin. and second, they showed the doorway to so many other types of music. long live RHCP
reading Anthony's book...halfway through...so mesmerized and devouring anything I can get my hands on. great interview. thanks for sharing.

this is a sweet video. to see them sitting around as a bunch of bright eyed youngsters. showing off their influences like their favorite toy.
Hillel was a truly beautiful and intelligent human being, not to mention an amazing guitar player. R.I.P
dude... old school chili peppers.. yes!!
Anthony Cocaine mode on hahahhah
Will Inamine that’s exactly what I was thinking . He seems high as hell on cocaine
Has it ever been off?
For more than 20 years he is being clean @@tukachaka264
One of favourite videos on YT. Keep coming back. And I'm not even a huge RHCP fan. But I'm a Bootsy Collins fan for live and Parliament/Funkadelic.
Gosh, I love them so. Rest in peace, Hillel. You're always on my mind.
Also, on a random side note, my ex was almost named Bootsy at birth after the one and only. 😂😂😂
It's great to know I'm not alone in my love for Sly!!!
The look of admiration on Flea's face as he watches Bootsy just totally says it all.
2:18 you can see Flea's humanity in his face lol you can see the beauty of his soul, he's such a great person. I love him
"Long live the bass" You heard it from the masters themselves. Stung by the funk
Chili peppers are my favorite band!! They introduced me to rock through funk!! Dope
word man I feel the same way. I can listen to all there albums as much as I want, but ill never know what it feels like to grow up like, WITH them, as in follow them throughout the years as a part of my life.
They are all so charming in their own unique way... I love RHCP .... R.I.P. RHCP wouldn't be the same without you :(
Yeah man, I watched his rare interview in Miami and it was awesome
I'd never heard Hillel talk before seeing this. Pretty cool. He had a really deep voice. I wonder why Jack Irons wasn't into the interview.
This was awesome to watch.
Bootsy Collins = Flea's real father
along LARRY GRAHAM "The father of Slap Bass".
it's a gem of a video! thanks so much for posting.

Same year I saw this lineup at the Filmore in SF. Was so explosive and completely life changing. Hillel would be gone just a few months later.

@efwb That is a version of "Tear the Roof off the Sucker" Which he co-wrote with George Clinton & Jerome Braley. It is off the the Mothership Connection album.

Anthony!!! 🤣🤣😂😂😂 Talking so fast!! They are sooooooo high! 🤪😜
I love how rough and badly made this is, it seems so real.
Sht, don't get to see too many interviews with Hillel, seems like such a down to earth kind of guy.
I have a guy in my band who plays bass who looks just like flea in this video
Are you the younger Josh?
It's the first time I hear Hillel's voice. I cried after watching that video is of 1988, when Hillel died.
Love the way Flea studies Bootsy playing while the lads are bopping side to side
Hillel's voice is so weird, so deep!
This was interesting. I love just hearing them prattling on. :)
i was always thinking that flea came old to this world .. but in this video he looks very young.. i think i have to change my point of view..loool... RGCP... i love you thanks for the nice music... john Frusciante come back again plz.

Look at Jack in the end hehehe
I wonder how the 1988 chili peppers would react to the music they made in the decades following. Id really like to see their reactions to it, as if they were listening to another great band that inspired them as they are doing here.
@maggot7777 Prior to the RHCP Flea was a replacement bass player for the punk band "Fear"
Hillel is so beautiful
Anthony talked so fast when he was younger!
Pretty sure it was the coke
