More blues? I dunno man there's quite a bit of blues in "Funky Monks", "I Could Have Lied", "If You Have to Ask", "She's Only 18", and almost any Froosh solo I can imagine. They were both bluesy. Hillel's tone maybe was closer to traditional blues, but not necessarily his playing.

I was lucky enough to see the RHCP's with Hillel at Storyville Jazz Hall in the French Quarter (New Orleans) around December of 1987. I was blown away by what I saw. Hillel was insanely talented, and he was insane. I remember a "stage diver" started messing with Hillel's pedals during a song. Hillel stopped and unleashed several sentences of vulgarities the likes of which were unparalleled in the annals of creative swearing. RIP Hillel. You're gone but will never be forgotten.
it's been almost two years since I first got into RHCP and since I discovered the beauty that is this man. I got SRV vibes. I've never really delved into earlier RHCP music, but I just saw a video of them performing at Pinkpop '88 and Hillel blew me away. This guy truly was special.
He taught Flea the basics, but it shows how much of a great musician Hillel was. He uses a sitar on the song Behind the Sun as well. He is a true legend.
I found the chili's when I was 11. I got Stadium Arcadium and then,my mom ended up getting me all the records. Hillel and John became like heroes to me. My family listened to soul/Rnb/funk (with a few exceptions) and siblings who listening to straight hip hop. RHCP introduced to so much at once. It showed me what punk/metal/altrock were, and got me into some real funk. I'm 18 now, and it just goes to show there are still youth that appreciate the full musicality that band had to offer.

What a tone, so simple and effectivy. Hillel is deffinitly the number 1 guitarrist in Peppers' sound. And that supper fuzz?! Uow! Thank you for sharing this video with us, man!

I was fortunate to see Hillel play in New York at the Ritz a bunch of times. Some of the very best rock & roll I've ever been exposed to. The guy was the heart of the band as far as I'm concerned. Peace & Love!
There's a live recording online supposedly of What is This? when Hillel Slovak and Alain Johannes were still in high school.
