Jack Johnson entering that ring, in front of that crowd- gives me goose bumps. He had a different kind of brass and had to be one of the bravest men who ever lived. To a man, nearly everyone in that crowd hated his guts, and came there to see him beaten; destroyed. And Johnson just smiles- because, even if the crowd doesn't know it, he knows what the outcome will be. He was one hell of a man!
They didn't hate Jack, that's an understatement, they wanted that man dead. They brought in Bat Masterson to collect everyone's guns before they went in. Jack's philosophy was simple, we're all gonna die anyway, I'm gonna live my life on my own terms. Jack's legacy is severely underrated as a champion and as a man.
He beat the fuck out of the “Great White Hope,” Jim Jeffries. It was such a beating that screenings of its footage were banned all throughout the south.
I've only just found this - a huge thank you for putting it on, I feel privileged to have finally seen this fight to it's fullest possible extent. Fight fans were of course used to the way boxers of this era would throw a couple or three punches and then clinch for what seemed ages at a time, without the ref breaking them up. This was the way they fought back then. But I noticed throughout the fight that Jeffries was taking some devastating head-shots all the way through and they must have had a powerful cumulative effect which finally took their toll on him (even with though he had the help of so many onlookers/cheats!) A perfect fight from the great Jack Johnson. Having watched this and many other fight films from that era, it's easy to see how Jack Dempsey lit up the boxing scene just a few years later with his relentless aggressive style and non stop excitement. Dempsey brought the boxing world into the 20th century, but thanks to people like you, we can enjoy and compare all these different fighters and styles now like we never had the access to do in the past. Thank you. It’s a file I found years ago and uploaded when I found it to be very hard to find. It’s an interesting look into how boxing was and what it has become. Some people say Jeffries and Johnson were too small to be competitive with today’s heavyweights, but imagine what giants those men could have been with today’s nutrition and health regimens? The average lifespan back then for a man was around 50.
@@joe56984 Absolutely. Johnson and Jeffries were big men in their times, I always remember a picture of Jeffries & Bob Fitzsimmons touching gloves before their fight. I know Speckled Bob was only a Middleweight really (but hard as iron) but Jeff's arms alone looked bigger than Bob's torso in that pic! The really big Heavyweights (apart from some exceptions of course) didn't really come about until the 1960s and then later came the GIANTS. I'm of the belief that people (men AND women) were so much harder/tougher in past times as suited their living environments. Even in my lifetime physical work has become more and more automated, whereas back in the days of Jeff & Johnson etc everything was done by hand, so everyone was naturally stronger instead of spending all day in the gym to put on the muscle. Also strongers minds back then. Imagine the determination of Jack Johnson every time he stepping in the ring knowing he had almost the whole of the so-called 'civilised' world against him. Wonderful bit of footage from over 112 years ago. Was this the first heavyweight "superfight", I wonder? It was certainly billed and promoted as such, with the consequences of unrest running deep. As Jeffries had retired undefeated as heavyweight champion 1904, his eventual comeback meant that he actually resumed his reign as linear champion until this, his only loss, handed Johnson that accolade. After Jeffries' retirement back in 1904, there was a period of vacancy up until the following year, when Jeffries himself referred the fight between Marvin Hart and Jack Root to decide the next heavyweight champion. Hart had already beaten Jack Johnson that year to earn the chance and also to avenge Root's previous win over him three years earlier. Hart knocked Root out in 12 rounds to win the vacant title that had been vacated by the man holding his arm up. Hart subsequently lost the title the following year in 1906 to Canadian Tommy Burns who avoided Johnson for a couple of years around the World, with multiple defences, until he caught up with him in Sydney, Australia, in 1908. Johnson convincingly beat Burns for the title, the first time a black man had been given the chance...and win the World Heavyweight title. As a consequence, due to the racial attitudes of the time, a newspaper article on the fight started a nationwide campaign to lure the 300lbs James J. Jeffies out of retirement from his alfalfa farm as a White Hope to rightfully restore the title where other whites had failed. The newspaper articled finished with the desire for Jeffries " to emerge from his alfalfa farm and remove the golden smile from Jack Johnson's face", adding the famous slogan, "Jeff, it's up to you!"
It was a MASSIVE fight, that had more social impact than anything having to do with the actual heavyweight boxing ranks. Jeff was way out of shape, even though he managed to lose the weight. He took what was an incredible payday.
Johnson was a genuine two-fisted fighter and he knew Jeff's only real weapon was his left hook. He hardly bothers to guard Jeff's right. No way could even a prime Jeffries beat this version of Jack Johnson who was bigger and stronger and quicker than him.
What's interesting about the left hook, is how Johnson kept twisting Jefferies' left hand behind his back throughout the fight. I think this served 2 purposes: One, to demoralize Jefferies, and two, to tire that arm out.
Yea , I think Jefferies was retired for 6 years and came out of it to challenge johnson. No fighter can win a title with that much rust . Jefferies pushed johnson back the whole fight stopped johnson from throwing a berunch of punches. I believe jefferies in his prime was good as johnson was for sure
If Johnson would've knocked him out early, they probably would've lynched him. The interesting thing about this fight, is that the crowd often couldn't see what was happening. A secret beating if you will. At first glance, it looks like 2 men pushing each other around the ring. The most boring fight you ever saw. But if you look closely, you'll see all these hard, sneaky uppercuts & short punches getting in there. A brilliant performance, considering Jack Johnson was not only fighting Jim Jefferies, but the angry crowd as well.
I know, embarrassing. Also as soon as the fight ended a man in a black suit and white hat jumps into the ring to confront Johnson, getting right in his face and pushing him back to his corner as the ring gets more crowded. It looks like he was stopping him from speaking to Jeffries.
It's crazy that coming off a 6 year lay off, Jeffries was the betting favorite. Don't think being past your prime was a thing that was understood at the time
Newspapers had whipped the public into a frenzy about Jeffries being 'The Great White Hope' who would regain the heavyweight championship for the good of (white) mankind. Even Jack London soiled himself editorializing about it: '‘One thing now remains. Jim Jeffries must emerge from his alfalfa farm and remove the golden smile from Jack Johnson’s face. Jeffries, it’s up to you! Jeffries, it’s up to you! The White Man must be rescued!’ People bet their bigotry, not their brains. Jeffries knew he didn't stand a chance but the pressure (and huge payday) dragged him into it. Even at his best, Jeffries would have struggled against a near-prime Johnson and he was definitely not at his best.
It was understood, even by Jeffries, when the subject of fighting Johnson was first raised. There were such high hopes that Jeff would beat Johnson combined with a pro-Jeff media hype that got way out of control which caused common sense to take a holiday. Something similar happened when Ali beat Liston in their first fight. They were so sure that Ali would be put in his place that the odds went up to 8-1 for Sonny. Ali talked to much about his own skill that nobody believed that such a fighter could possibly be as good as he claimed. Nobody believed that as much as Liston, to hi great sorrow,
Congress passed an emergency ban on the transport of movie film after this fight to stop this particular recording from leaving the state it was filmed in.
Why did they fight cautiously? Do the math. 45 rounds of 3 minutes. Add a minute rest. 45 x 4 = 180 minutes! Potentially THREE hours of grappling in 100+ degrees! Good GAWD! 👄
That was the innovation of Jack. He was about winning and didn't care if he was called a coward who wouldn't fight. Put being black on top of that. If he was white he would be called a coward who's not fighting but he brought that science to the sport. Who knows what he would have been with modern training but his approach to break it down to a science and have real strategy is why he was a great heavy weight in that era. Obviously his abilities ans skills there will not make him a threat to elite modern fighters but like I said, who knows what he would be with modern training

The scientific knowledge of the body has improved so much and with it being so much money in prize fighting that science has been fully incorporated so he would terror in a modern sense. It's the innovation and inner passion to overcome that makes champions special and that spark in him would be successful in any era

He did use light weight training, not like today's fighters, but used resistance exercise such as sawing logs and chopping wood. And lots of road work. He said he always started his day with a large glass of water to get his body awakened. I also read he ate huge amounts of food, especially chicken. So, resistance exercise, endurance exercise, hydration, lean protein - pretty smart.

Jeffries came out of a 6 year retirement and was out of shape. Johnson probaly would have beaten Jeffries in his prime. It would have been a much better fight.
The late Jeff comastro told me there is the old timer in California who has this fight complete. He won't trade it to anyone. I assume the complete fight is one hour. I have been collecting fights since the year 2000. I have some rare fights like the liston vs Griffin amateur fight. I also have a fight from 1970 that Rahman Ali was in. I hope some day to get the Johnson vs Jeffries fight complete.
They agreed to work out of clinches in the contract. Jeffries people had that included especially because they felt Jeffrey good Mall Johnson inside. They were obviously mistaken about that

@@daveswart9267 It's crazy knowing that the ref for this fight was the promoter. The President, yes POTUS, was originally asked, but turned down the offer. Crazy! Not really sure what the refs role was back then. And I'm pretty sure they didn't quite know either. Kind of learn as you go, if you know what I mean. There were no ref schools back then. I want to say their chief role was to make sure nobody dies. But, had it not been for Jeffries corner stepping in to stop the fight, it might have happened on that day.
You are correct, in those days you didn't have to go to a neutral corner. Jack Dempsey did this in his fight with Willard in 1919. Willard took a huge beating, and this came back to haunt Dempsey later on in his "long count" fight with Tunney as he didn't remember by then he was supposed to go to a neutral corner after a knockdown. So yes, per the rules in 1910, Johnson didn't have to do anything except wait until his opponent got up.
He was goaded into fighting again. He had not excercise in six years and got fat. He should have known there was no way he could win. And I genuinely think towards the end of the fight, Johnson felt sorry for him. Right before it is stopped, Jack stops holds his gloves palm open and looks at the referee like, are you gonna stop this.

Was reading about the Klondike Gold Rush and discovered "Tex" Rickard a true American Icon. And that brought me here. Now I am gong to watch all the films from THE GREAT WHITE HOPE TO Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson (2004) The story of Jack Johnson, the first African-American Heavyweight boxing champion.
Unforgivable Blackness is outstanding. Gerald Early, Stanley Crouch and James Earl Jones (my favorite single actor of all time) are all in it, and Keith David is a brilliant narrator.
I'm not real big on boxing. But I do have a pretty good knowledge of boxing history. If Rocky Marciano had come out of retirement around 1960 as he said he thought of doing in an interview. He likely would have eventually fought Ali or Sonny Liston. If either one of them had defeated Marciano it probably would have been a repeat of the Jack Johnson Jim Jeffries fight. Maybe even some rioting would have resulted as it did after this contest.

Perhaps a few dedicated Marciano fans somewhere in the USA, maybe New York City would have attacked some blk folks or the blk community itself. And the whole thing could have escalated from there. People who had been involved in this sport, should have known better than to talk a man who had been retired for SIX years , doing no training, excercise, no tune up fights to see if the reflexes , hand speed, foot work were still there. It's ridiculous. Jeffries either believed the nonsense showered on him, which was foolish if he did. He knew he could not get in shape, or he just needed the money. From what I've read even Jeffries trainer said he could not win. John L Sullivan even Express doubt, causing Tex Rickard to explain to reporters, tell the old man to keep his mouth shut bor he can pay for his ticket. Johnson also commented that, Jeff can't fight nobody, I don't know what he's doing, he knows he can't get his natural trim back. Towards the end, he can be seen glancing at the referee , like are you going to stop this.
The ring rust alone would have been too much to overcome, but on top of all that Jeff had to drop a massive amount of weight. It wasn’t a recipe for success, but he did make a fortune from the fight.
They spent most of the fight in a clinch plodding around the ring. Johnson was blocking Jeffries' left hand then uppercutting him with his right before forcing Jeffries' left arm behind his back to tire him. Jeffries landed a few solid punches, mostly to the body. In the 4th or 5th round he landed a big shot to Johnson's head only to get nailed by several hard shots himself. Tommy Burns put up a better fight than this.
Jeffries was also a shell of himself. He had been out of the ring for 6 years and had to lose 70 pounds to get in ring shape. Imagine if Floyd Mayweather were to make the big comeback next year against Jermell Charlo. It wouldn't end well for Money

Fighters had to pace themselves differently too, as fights were generally set for many more rounds than now. Sometimes the fight was to the finish with no set amount of rounds. Today a fighter can have a much higher work rate because they only have to go max 12 rounds.

A marvel of historical preservation. The closest to a time machine. Johnson was the more confident fighter and was rewarded accordingly. Jeffries looked scared, unsure of himself and his stamina was poor. One can see the disappointment on the faces of the audience at the result - history was made and it was the dawn of black dominance of the sport.
Tex Rickard refereed (never before or after, thankfully) and paid to build that stadium. Johnson was better no question about it in this fight. From all footage available on Jeffries the champion, was faster & stronger of course And Johnson IS in his prime in this fight. But they never would have met both at there best only had jeffries stayed champ and they met no sooner then 1907. Which would of happened, no way Hart, Squire or Burns beat Jeffries. I believe Jeffries would of eventually fought Johnson. But it didn't happen that way so just another example of the disappointing history of the Heavyweight Title. I know what Jeffries said after their fight, it was Respect. Just as Johnson after losing to Willard. Jeffries & Johnson were unwilling to defend their titles against Black opponents. Lots of he said he said about these 2 on all their fight videos. Don't kid yourself Johnson was not in his Prime when Jeffries retired Champion, Don't agree? Jack Johnson gives a master class on how to beat Jim Jefferies, a white national hero without starting a riot or getting the fight stopped by police. How did he do it? By lulling the audience to sleep with the most boring, technical fight you ever saw. By the time the knockout came, I think most people were simply grateful it didn't last 45-rounds. In other words, they wanted to riot, but everybody needed to go home and take a nap first. Riot didn't start until the next day. lol

But of course he wasn’t even close here to what he had been when he was younger. The interesting thing, as someone else mentioned, was that neither of these boxers was really in their prime during this fight. James was past his, and Johnson hadn’t reached his yet. To get a prime fight with these two, you’d need to pit James from a few years earlier-before he retired-with Johnson a few years later. I’m guessing that (purely hypothetical) fight would have been more exciting than what we see here.
Jeffries stated after the fight that he didn't think he would have ever been able to beat Johnson, even when he was in his prime. By all accounts, Jeffries was an extremely good fighter in his prime. Some boxing writers believe Jeffries was better than Jack Dempsey and Joe Louis.
@@CliffinAZ Johnson was past his prime as well. Remember, he was 32 years old in Reno. That is 5-8 years past a boxer's prime. Of course, he never too 6 years off of training so he was much "younger" from a training standpoint.

Fighting into his 60's and winning more than he lost at that age. When They fought Jeffries was 35 years old and Johnson was 33.

Jack Johnson was certainly the greatest of all heavyweights to win the world title. He did not only fight a man from the opposite corner as it seemed that almost everyone there was against him. He carried his opponents dishing out a humiliating beatings coupled with racial insults rubbing salts in whiteman wounds by winning against their expectations. That makes him most courageous and the greatest in my mind's eye. (2022.01.30-05:38-socalled South Africa)

The newspaper articled finished with the desire for Jeffries " to emerge from his alfalfa farm and remove the golden smile from Jack Johnson's face", adding the famous slogan, "Jeff, it's up to you!"
It was a MASSIVE fight, that had more social impact than anything having to do with the actual heavyweight boxing ranks. Jeff was way out of shape, even though he managed to lose the weight. He took what was an incredible payday.
Johnson was a genuine two-fisted fighter and he knew Jeff's only real weapon was his left hook. He hardly bothers to guard Jeff's right. No way could even a prime Jeffries beat this version of Jack Johnson who was bigger and stronger and quicker than him.

What's interesting about the left hook, is how Johnson kept twisting Jefferies' left hand behind his back throughout the fight. I think this served 2 purposes: One, to demoralize Jefferies, and two, to tire that arm out.

A secret beating if you will. At first glance, it looks like 2 men pushing each other around the ring. The most boring fight you ever saw. But if you look closely, you'll see all these hard, sneaky uppercuts & short punches getting in there. A brilliant performance, considering Jack Johnson was not only fighting Jim Jefferies, but the angry crowd as well.

He did use light weight training, not like today's fighters, but used resistance exercise such as sawing logs and chopping wood. And lots of road work. He said he always started his day with a large glass of water to get his body awakened. I also read he ate huge amounts of food, especially chicken. So, resistance exercise, endurance exercise, hydration, lean protein - pretty smart.

The late Jeff comastro told me there is the old timer in California who has this fight complete. He won't trade it to anyone. I assume the complete fight is one hour. I have been collecting fights since the year 2000. I have some rare fights like the liston vs Griffin amateur fight. I also have a fight from 1970 that Rahman Ali was in. I hope some day to get the Johnson vs Jeffries fight complete.

Not really sure what the refs role was back then. And I'm pretty sure they didn't quite know either. Kind of learn as you go, if you know what I mean. There were no ref schools back then. I want to say their chief role was to make sure nobody dies. But, had it not been for Jeffries corner stepping in to stop the fight, it might have happened on that day.
You are correct, in those days you didn't have to go to a neutral corner. Jack Dempsey did this in his fight with Willard in 1919. Willard took a huge beating, and this came back to haunt Dempsey later on in his "long count" fight with Tunney as he didn't remember by then he was supposed to go to a neutral corner after a knockdown. So yes, per the rules in 1910, Johnson didn't have to do anything except wait until his opponent got up.

I'm not real big on boxing. But I do have a pretty good knowledge of boxing history. If Rocky Marciano had come out of retirement around 1960 as he said he thought of doing in an interview. He likely would have eventually fought Ali or Sonny Liston.
If either one of them had defeated Marciano it probably would have been a repeat of the Jack Johnson Jim Jeffries fight. Maybe even some rioting would have resulted as it did after this contest.

People who had been involved in this sport, should have known better than to talk a man who had been retired for SIX years , doing no training, excercise, no tune up fights to see if the reflexes , hand speed, foot work were still there. It's ridiculous. Jeffries either believed the nonsense showered on him, which was foolish if he did. He knew he could not get in shape, or he just needed the money. From what I've read even Jeffries trainer said he could not win. John L Sullivan even Express doubt, causing Tex Rickard to explain to reporters, tell the old man to keep his mouth shut bor he can pay for his ticket. Johnson also commented that, Jeff can't fight nobody, I don't know what he's doing, he knows he can't get his natural trim back. Towards the end, he can be seen glancing at the referee , like are you going to stop this.
The ring rust alone would have been too much to overcome, but on top of all that Jeff had to drop a massive amount of weight. It wasn’t a recipe for success, but he did make a fortune from the fight.

They spent most of the fight in a clinch plodding around the ring. Johnson was blocking Jeffries' left hand then uppercutting him with his right before forcing Jeffries' left arm behind his back to tire him. Jeffries landed a few solid punches, mostly to the body. In the 4th or 5th round he landed a big shot to Johnson's head only to get nailed by several hard shots himself. Tommy Burns put up a better fight than this.
Jeffries was also a shell of himself. He had been out of the ring for 6 years and had to lose 70 pounds to get in ring shape. Imagine if Floyd Mayweather were to make the big comeback next year against Jermell Charlo. It wouldn't end well for Money

Fighters had to pace themselves differently too, as fights were generally set for many more rounds than now. Sometimes the fight was to the finish with no set amount of rounds. Today a fighter can have a much higher work rate because they only have to go max 12 rounds.

Jack Johnson was certainly the greatest of all heavyweights to win the world title. He did not only fight a man from the opposite corner as it seemed that almost everyone there was against him. He carried his opponents dishing out a humiliating beatings coupled with racial insults rubbing salts in whiteman wounds by winning against their expectations. That makes him most courageous and the greatest in my mind's eye.
