My 2000 Honda Odyssey indicated a CEL signifying insufficient flow at the EGR. I typically use 89 octane and decided to run a tank of 93 octane with three ounces of Lucas gas treatment. After three road trips of approx thirty minutes the CEL quit indicating a fault. The 93 immediately provided better combustion and acceleration. The trick is to run 93 octane and drive with strong acceleration technique to create greater flow and heat. Be safe.
Appreciate that. I dunno though, I am a rambler and not a very good teacher, but I try. I have been working on cars my whole life and most of it in a shop by myself so never really had to explain any thing ya know. Thanks for watching!
***** Hey I appreciate that you say that. I always wonder you know. I love working on cars and learning and testing stuff. Honestly though as I record it I always think, who the heck is gonna watch this crap lol.. I mean I would but I am fascinated by it. Any how thanks for watching!
Awesome video, Eric! I am a seasoned vet but still always learn something from your excellent production! My 4 year old is starting to watch you now (he loves Chris Fix too). He now understands that I watch you for a reason. I really appreciate your family friendly approach to Diagnostic trouble shooting!
My Honda Fit threw a P1491 yesterday, but the cause was easy to find. I'd wondered if an EGR sensor fault might be causing hesitation at 1500-2000 RPM, and I had unplugged it with the intention of hooking up a power supply and scope to check that it all works as expected. Of course, I ran out of time, got distracted with other things, and forgot that the EGR was unplugged when I later drove the car! After about 10 mins driving, CEL came on, pulled over, P1491, ohhhhh I know why *that's* happening! :D
I did subsequently get the test done (same idea as in this video) and it checks out fine: pintle goes out further with higher current, potentiometer output tracks position with no drop-outs, and the engine idles rougher the more the valve is opened. Now more confident that the hesitation is ignition-related...
Hey you have to see if the part is bad or its the PCM or the wiring, heck there is a lot of possibilities as far as I'm concerned. I would have to agree though. Some guys just start winging parts at it. In this case a good guess would have fixed it but I think testing the circuit helps keep you sharp and reminds you how things work. I dunno I just really enjoy working on cars and try to do the best job I can for my customers and try to fix it right the first time. Thanks for watching!
It's astonishing to me that so few resources exist to describe what "normal" resistance is supposed to be for a "good" valve coil and position sensor (Don't get me started on coolant temp thermistor sensors). The Haynes book on my GF's Civic is so lame it doesn't even show the engine wiring harness. One suggestion to help explain what you're doing might be to sketch up the wiring for the part, showing the solenoid coil and potentiometer connections, and where these go in the vehicle. A picture is worth a kiloword, I think... Thanks for all you do and the effort you make.
I have a gut feeling that I have an EGR issue with pilot, but of course I'm 1000 miles from home and I didn't bring my scan tool. I'll either have to wait for a cheapo scanner to ship to me or go to a parts store so they can try and sell me something I don't need. At least it's still running well and the check engine light only comes on during a below freezing cold start.
Hey Eric. This is a great video with great step by step detail of how you confirm an EGR failure and do not just accept what the fault code says. I had a similar experience some years ago with a Renault Grand Scenic diesel. They changed an EGR and an air intake valve in the first four visits. After another maybe 10 returns with the same fault you are showing to the garage the fault was never fixed. It is a long story what happened after that to resolve the issue but I have always felt that dealership and manufacturer incompetency was the real cause for the issue at the end of the day. It should have been an in the garage one day for diagnosis and a return for repair as you have demonstrated in both videos. And that should be the end of the matter. So don't feel you are going in to too much detail. The information in this video was excellent and demonstrated very clearly. I have been a subscriber for most of 2015 and I am enjoying all the videos. Happy New Year to you and your family.
this is a great video with tons of info on how troubleshoot an electric EGR. I had to go through this to help a friend troubleshooting a P401 on a V6 Olds Aurora. The valve was working good so far and the sensor reading was within specs, what I didnt do was the test drive or the power brake to activate the valve..
That's cool glad it could help. Now the power brake does not always work. Depends on the strategy of the pcm. Some need to see speed signal first. I believe a 401 is more of a flow problem. Does the car stall when the valve is opened?
Very impressive electricity skills, I’m impressed and inspired to learn more this coming from a person who makes Electricity! Author of Solar Independent Utility Systems Manual Best wishes and nice job !
A very thorough detailed analysis, diagnostics is something I'm weak on. I now see how useful those dealer level scan tools are. Great video! I sometimes shoot at shiny objects on my channel, you have to either tilt the screen down or put a shade over the screen to block the overhead lights.
Eric, yet another great video! I too am fascinated with auto repair, and it's great to see that you take your time and explore all of the possibilities in your diagnosis. Anyways, thank you for taking the time to film your work, I look forward to your future videos!
Hey thanks CoryMcwinburn ! Well I just ordered the new valve from Wells Electronics so later this week there will be that along with the "re-test" drive of the new part to see how it is suppose to work. This one got drawn out a lil long because I assumed it was stuck shut. So it was a surprise for me too. Oh well that's why we test!
Thanks a lot Matt! Likewise, I really enjoy your channel also. Lots of good guys out there, love all that is available to learn now days free on the internet. Amazing wealth of knowledge.

Hey OneLegged hondamechanic appreciate the heads up. Honda does do a great job putting out the TSB and data. It is my habit to check TSB's on anything I work on. Can save major headaches in a lot of cases as I am sure you know :) Thanks for sharing!
Hi Eric, love your videos...learned a lot over the years so thank you. Btw, you're rubbing off on me, the other day at the Doctors office a guy asked what kind of car I drove and I said a "Hondoo" lol. Keep up the good work!!
I just had this same code on my 1999 Accord, and I went through the tests from the service manual. The EGR valve failed both of the tests for resistance (100k ohms or higher), so it recommended replacing the valve.
Excellent diagnostic flow, Can only make one suggestion, I would have made more use of the bi-directional controls under functional tests, and scoped the signal wire, and the power to the EGR, you would see the varying signal (as you vary the percentage with the scantool), and the PWM change in the power supply. I like to tap on the EGR valve while carrying out this test, whilst observing the signal trace, lot of the time faulty position sensors are caught this way. I believe on the Verus, that you can have the lab scope up in one window, while simultaneously commanding the EGR. I notice you have the Schrodingers Box seal of approval lol. Always a good thing...Good luck, looking forward to more.
slashnburndotcodotuk Lol yeah it's ok. Thanks for watching :) Great suggestions though. Def would have used the scan tool if it was an available option.
I had to pull the intake manifold and clean out the EGR passages. Note: blast out the AIC too, as all the activity will likely disturb the crap in the there and it won't idle right anymore.
I am trying to test my EGR valve on my 99 Honda Accord. The car does not stall or rough idle when I manually open the pintle. I even removed the EGR valve and started the car and the car does not rough idle or stall. It just is very loud. Does this mean that I have carbon build up in the passage way?
Hmmm might be the same issue on my 2002 ody, i have spark knock at around 1,500 rpm under light throttle, car doesnt like to maintain a particular speed on the highway unless i give it more acceleration
Wish I knew you when we rebuilt a lot of 65 corvairs,,,simpler times, gotta be pretty intelligent nowadays...too crammed with electronics, some good and some unessasary...technology marches on
Great vid, first time watching. I like your style, think I'll subscribe. By the way saw your comment on Matt's channel and decided to take a look. Great stuff!
I’m only here because I have a bad idle hunt going on on my 01 odyssey I think I need to clean the egr port in the intake manifold, but I’m completely lost at what is going on otherwise. 😢
EGR valve only opens when car is in drive? You said in video that you had car in gear when you were looking at EGR valve output signal in the shop? Were you applying brakes while you were revving the throttle with car in drive? Is that what you meant when you said you were going to "power brake" the car, when you were opening the throttle? Sorry if this is silly question. I'm trying to do the same test (on 1999 Acura TL--similar engine and EGR valve) while the car is in park with engine on but I think the car's computer is smart enough to only apply EGR valve open signal when car is in gear. If anyone can answer, would appreciate. Thanks. EDIT: FYI, when I apply this test with car in park, I see EGR valve position signal (to ECM) spike up on initial snap of throttle but spike back down immediately. When idle is held at 2000 to 3000 RPM, the EGR signal stay constant 1.05 V. (Acura service manual I have says it should be around 1.2V with valve closed.)
Ahhh the old sun machine lol. Hey now I grew up on one of those. Actually it was the Snap-On Counselor II, great big huge thing, 7' tall, green screen, big boom with all kinds of wires hanging from it for ignition testing. At any rate thanks for watchin, oh and if you wanna pick up a Verus scanner lab scope it will set you back adout 9k.
Yeah pretty interesting huh? Just got the new one in today from Wells and will do a video when the customer returns then we will dissect that old one to have a look. Thanks for watching!
those odesseys the easiest thing to do is remove the intake plenum and clean all the egr passages since you already replaced the egr valve i actually have pictures of that same exact engine in the intake plenum removed
I got a code to put EGR Valve,So I got a new one but check engine light keeps coming on for it but it's new. What do I do.Do you know a code to put in to take it off,I still have original one from can but it a 2000 Honda Odyssey van it has 233,000 miles runs awesome.other then this problem.
Robert Farber. remove the intake plenum and clean carbon from egr air passages. severl videos on youtube to walk u through the job it took me 1hr to do so.
This made my check engine come on yesterday and it was running rough to now the check engine light has gone off and its running like a kitten . Every mechanic i try to get it fixed they give me the run around and dont seem to want to do it!
I have a 99 Honda Accord 3.0 Vtec V-6 and I'm having the same problems but I can't diagnose it like you can. What would a diagnosis like you did on this vehicle would a man expect to pay ?
Have you or anyone here seen or know why this particular EGR leaks smoke from the holes around the body doing a smoke test? Same things happens with another new as well.
I like how you make it very clear of what you are saying this was my first video I have watched of yours and I am going to subscribe so I can learn more :P thanks
Hi Erick, just a quick comment, I notice on your video that you jump the 5 volt reference to the signal (not a good idea), what if the signal wire is grounded? So the best thing to do is create a jumper wire with a 5K ohm resistance on it or use the Hook (which I know you have), so if the signal wire is grounded you won't hurt the PCM.
couldnt you of went under functional tests on the scanner and comanded it open to save yourself time using the power probe? or was that not an available option??
Nice video! Where did you learn electrical system diagnosing? I’m a student and took an electrical systems class last semester and am still completely lost when it comes to electrical systems. All my other auto classes have been relatively easy but I will need to dive in deeper on this one.
99.9% of the world mechanics would replace the EGR in an instance and be done with it. But you?! Noooo you have to be honest, take things step by step, use the root cause analysis system, do the right thing.. etc, etc. There is something wrong with.... the world.
hi guys about p1491 I have a 1999 honda odyssey I clean everything took out manifold clean every carbon build up and the egr it self and still I'm getting p1491 I don't know what to do now pls. help me what would trigger the p1491 code. thanks guys
Nice video, though I'm not entirely convinced by the "regular old Joe" thing. But lets assume you were, and you only had a multimeter. Could this condition be diagnosed? I'm in that situation with a OBD1 Honda Accord. Was coked solid, but cleaning hasn't made the CEL go. EGR solenoid and engine responds to 12V jumpering. Maybe next move would be to supply 5V(either from car or from an external supply) and see what the signal voltages are (though IIRC you said theres no published spec.) I'm quite reluctant to touch any computer controlled circuits though
I’m having the same issue on my 98 accord vtec 3.0 I cleaned the valve still having the code so what’s the fix, and also I have a 1738 code which is 2nd pressure switch but not sure the location of the actual switch.
I really enjoy your videos. I have a mobile repair shop in Rockland County New York..Upstate NY to me, but I'm gonna assume you're much further upstate??
Interesting how it's just all over the place and it is dropping out and then coming back 🤔 makes me think the Egr valve is Sticky Eric O nice Find On the Egr valve being Good and the egr position Sensor being bad It could of tricked you if ya Only did the stall out test very nice Diag and Find On the drop outs @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC

Watching first time at the end of 2023. This young pilgrim has come far. 😉
THIS is why I watch this channel. I would have thrown a new EGR valve at this code without thinking about it - this is a real professional.
These early diagnostic video's are just as good as they are now. It's obvious why your channel grew to what it is today.

Wow, what a thorough diagnosis. Awesome scan tool. Sure beats the old Sun tester my Dad had in his shop. What do those go for?
Ahhh the old sun machine lol. Hey now I grew up on one of those. Actually it was the Snap-On Counselor II, great big huge thing, 7' tall, green screen, big boom with all kinds of wires hanging from it for ignition testing. At any rate thanks for watchin, oh and if you wanna pick up a Verus scanner lab scope it will set you back adout 9k.
grasias por esa informacion aprendi muy buenos tips
Sus bienvenida, gracias por ver!
excellent video .looks like the sensor is heat is heat sensitive, the more you ran it the worse it became. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah pretty interesting huh? Just got the new one in today from Wells and will do a video when the customer returns then we will dissect that old one to have a look. Thanks for watching!
I need some help,I put a new EGR Valve in 2000 Honda Odyssey cargo van,but dam check engine came on,how do I do this code or get one? Thank you.
those odesseys the easiest thing to do is remove the intake plenum and clean all the egr passages since you already replaced the egr valve i actually have pictures of that same exact engine in the intake plenum removed
With out seeing the vehicle or gathering data that is impossible to answer
Cool Video thank u mr O👍🇺🇸
excellent video my man,
Thanks for watching!
takes time to do it right great stuff
I like how you make it very clear of what you are saying this was my first video I have watched of yours and I am going to subscribe so I can learn more :P thanks
Your welcome! Thanks :)
Great video
This shit mind boggling man o man
GREAT work
Thanks for the help
Hi Erick, just a quick comment, I notice on your video that you jump the 5 volt reference to the signal (not a good idea), what if the signal wire is grounded?
So the best thing to do is create a jumper wire with a 5K ohm resistance on it or use the Hook (which I know you have), so if the signal wire is grounded you won't hurt the PCM.
couldnt you of went under functional tests on the scanner and comanded it open to save yourself time using the power probe? or was that not an available option??
Great question. You are right that would have been the first place to go if it was an available option but unfortunately on this Y/M/M it was not :/
Excellent video!
Nice video! Where did you learn electrical system diagnosing? I’m a student and took an electrical systems class last semester and am still completely lost when it comes to electrical systems. All my other auto classes have been relatively easy but I will need to dive in deeper on this one.
how often would you get the egr code? just wondering cause i havent gotten one
99.9% of the world mechanics would replace the EGR in an instance and be done with it. But you?! Noooo you have to be honest, take things step by step, use the root cause analysis system, do the right thing.. etc, etc. There is something wrong with.... the world.
Great video! Gotta get a better scanner for that test, any recommendations?
Thks
Chuck
your a good teacher
hi, on a 2002 volkswagon jetta tdi diesel, the egr has a hole on the side that oil comes out from, is this a bad egr or another underlying problem?
Great videos.., thanks
hi guys about p1491 I have a 1999 honda odyssey I clean everything took out manifold clean every carbon build up and the egr it self and still I'm getting p1491 I don't know what to do now pls. help me what would trigger the p1491 code. thanks guys
probably the egr went bad
I did replaced my egr but it has to be from honda I bought the after market it's not compatible.
I have the same code on my 96 accord and i tried to clean the passage ways but the bolts are so tight i broke my tools
Can you make a video about a p1498 code.. thanks
Karina Acuna If I get a vehicle in with that code sure...
Cool thanks
Nice video, though I'm not entirely convinced by the "regular old Joe" thing. But lets assume you were, and you only had a multimeter. Could this condition be diagnosed?
I'm in that situation with a OBD1 Honda Accord. Was coked solid, but cleaning hasn't made the CEL go. EGR solenoid and engine responds to 12V jumpering. Maybe next move would be to supply 5V(either from car or from an external supply) and see what the signal voltages are (though IIRC you said theres no published spec.)
I'm quite reluctant to touch any computer controlled circuits though
I got Odyssey 2000 when i driving in the freeway and go fastes and take high road
or bridge Lost speed i don't know what's goin on thanks
I have 2004 honda odyssey I'm having trouble to locate the oxygen sensor bank 1 (P0131) if you could help me thank u
Awesome, as usual! 😁
I’m having the same issue on my 98 accord vtec 3.0 I cleaned the valve still having the code so what’s the fix, and also I have a 1738 code which is 2nd pressure switch but not sure the location of the actual switch.
would cleaning it solve the issue?? I love all your vids and watched this one to the end !! Thank you
2003 Odyssey, 232,000 miles as of 8/2019... Runs beautifully but really drinks motor oil as they like to do. But oil is cheap.
is it possible to use the power probe ect 2000 in the absence of the one you used?
In reality or real life, first check harness. After that, replace the valve and do a EGR passage cleaning. Isn't it much better for the customer?
I really enjoy your videos. I have a mobile repair shop in Rockland County New York..Upstate NY to me, but I'm gonna assume you're much further upstate??
Oh yeah I'm up by the finger lakes in Steuben County. Glad you enjoy the videos!
Thanks for the video.
your awesome dude :) wish i had a scoop like u :)
Keep your eyes peeled on craigslist and e-bay. You can get a good deal on one a lot of times used for a really good bargain :)
Start with cleaning the carbon build up on the egr...that fixed my honda
I would have started with function tests and actuated the egr and monitor the position pid
I have 2003honda odyssey 144.000 mile the tcs light is on please help
There is only 4 good u tubers out there ...
