  • The house of Bourbon originated in France and is a part of the Capetian Dynasty. Over time, the house became one of the most important European dynasties and its members became kings of Navarre, France, Spain, the two Sicilies and Dukes of Parma. The name Bourbon derives from the castle now called Bourbon l'Archambault, which was attached to the dominion of Bourbonnais. The first ancestor of the Bourbon Dynasty is considered to be Adhémar, who was a viscount of Châtel-de-Neuvre. As merit for his loyalty, in 913 the French king Charles the Simple granted him several lands situated in Berry, Auvergne and Autunois, on the banks of the Allier.
Adhémar had four sons: Aymon I, who succeeded Adhémar as lord of Bourbon after his death in 953, Archimbald, Dagobert and Emmo.
In 1268, Adhémar's descendant Beatrix of Bourbon married Count Robert of Clermont, who was the sixth son of King Louis IX of France. Their son Louis became duke of Bourbon in 1327. Peter II of Bourbon married Anna of France in 1473 and became co-regent of France in 1483. After two centuries, however, the house lost the duchy of Bourbon, but in 1555 the Bourbon-Vendôme branch obtained rule over Navarre and in 1589 through Henry of Bourbon that over France, when Henry became Henri IV Of France and Navarre.
The Bourbon-Condé and Conti branches, who were called princes of the blood because they were branches of the family from before Henry IV's accession to the throne, never ruled France and the branches died out.
The Bourbons came to power in Spain when Philip V, who was a grandson of Louis XIV, ascended the spanish throne in 1700, after Charles II Of Spain died without offspring. With some interruptions, they have retained the spanish throne to this day. The kings of the two Sicilies (Bourbon-Sicily) and the Dukes of Parma (Bourbon-Parma) descended from the Spanish Branch of the Bourbon bloodline.

My favorite period in French history! This was a great summary of the principal Bourbon monarchs. Have you done a video on the Affair of the Necklace? I'd be interested to hear about it in more detail.

I'm not sure about Pocahontas because I know next to nothing about her. I think that most likely others can do her story more justice than I can...

This dynasty and the Valois I found interesting. I always found how Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette died and now their poor children suffered. I wonder how different France would be if they still had their monarchy.

It would definitely have been a constitutional monarchy… other than that I’m not sure.. the revolution definitely shaped france so one can wonder.

@@TheKingsofFrance time to learn the truth. There would be no title of Louisiana if it weren't for prince Louis Joseph XVII being rescued from the dungeon cellars of his own castle by Napoleon. I am an a heir of King Louis Joseph Prince de comte/conti aka the lost dauphin

Henry IV is one of the most fascinating characters of the early modern period. He was a pragmatist, and saw the French as one people, undivided by religion. In an age of horrible violence, he sought to promote tolerance and understanding. In an age of absolute power, he cultivated an image of a courteous and we'll meaning ruler. And ultimately, he was killed by a man who could not understand the need for such a king. Truly remarkable story.

I seriously feel very sad and sorry for king Louis XVI . Man he tried so hard to improve the already worsened conditions of France but the revolutionaries portrayed him badly and agitated people for execution. Heck the people outside Paris didn't even supported the revolution

I know that Louis XIV is the Bourbon king everyone thinks of. And I understand why. But I find Henry IV fascinating. Living through the Wars of Religion would have been no easy thing. It's odd to think how religious his mother was and yet his destiny was to be a Catholic king. He even seems rather amiable. But in the end, even that didn't save him.

So ironically, the French never allowed the kingship to descend from a female, yet they were more than happy to lap up other titles from females of other families

You have a great channel . But , you are missing some people, like major people William of Orange ( Louis XIV 's greatest nemesis ) , John Churchill , First Duke of Marlborough , and Prince Eugene of Savoy .
Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy opened some major cans of whoop ass on King Louis !
So much so , that they almost knocked him off of his throne .
And you don't even mention these guys ?
    Are you kidding me ?
