I was 4 years old when I first saw this show, and it completely blew my mind. I watched both Battle of The Planets and later G-Force. This anime along with Starblazers are responsible for me becoming an Anime fan. Last month, I purchased the entire Gatchaman collection on bluray.
Yea, I was prolly about 5 years old when I first started seeing Battle of Planets and Starblazers. Me and my Friend would sit in side by side lawn chairs, pretending we were flying the Yamato and shooting the wave gun. Good times.
My first anime was Astro Boy Back in the 60's, I have all Three Gatchaman Series on Laser Disc which I brought at the HMV on 72nd Street and Broadway N.Y.C. I had to Special order Gatchaman Fighter but they only had the first volume. Then someone at one of the Canadian HMV's cancelled their order and I got the second volume to complete the set.
I knew this show as G-Force. I first saw it on TV in 1988 when I was 6-years-old. I'm guessing what I saw was re-runs but they used to come on multiple times a day.
Being born in 1970 I fell in love with this. It aired at some odd times, including 6:00 am! I remember getting up extra early to watch this before school. For Halloween one year my mom helped make me a Ken costume, complete with wings I could extend and drop.
Kind of undersold just how important the Battle of the Planets adaptation was to the US ever getting a huge influx of anime. It led directly to the import of Voltron which led to all the others after it. Battle of the Planets was my first non-Saturday morning cartoon must-watch series as a kid as they ran it in syndication daily on the only independent station we had (later became the FOX affiliate) similar to how it was aired in Japan.
Gatchaman - original Battle of the planet - same as Gatchaman, but American version rewrites the story and adds 7-ARK-7 to narrates ( which is a scheme to censor fighting violence from the original show) GForce - same as original Gatchaman with all violent fights intact, but yet again with a totally rewritten story.
They didn't just rewrite the story, they would literally cut 1/2 the show then have "Zark 7" narrate something that resembled a half-baked story that generally had nothing to do with the original story. I watched it when it first aired as a child, and it never made any sense. Not a single episode. It felt like it could have been something good but wasn't. After watching the full series a couple of years ago, I now understand what was missing.
As a child, I watched it when it was "G-Force" on Cartoon Network, but it would later be shown on Fox Kids on Sunday mornings under the name "Eagle Riders." I didn't know about the other titles it was under until much later on.
Yeah Eagle Riders was pointless and just part of Saban trying to convince a new generation they created the series. It was the G Force version with bad overdubs added on top of the English dub to change names.
Man, the memories. Watching this, Speed Racer and Ultraman in the the 70s. Then graduating into Mazinger Z, the Votrons and Macross/Robotech in the early 80s. Thanks to this I was always on the lookout and found awesome anime rentals in the stores to bring home and watch in the late 80s and beyond. Good times.
Battle of the Planets had the best theme song of any animated TV show, or at least any animated action/adventure show. Maybe Voltron is second, which is fitting on how it's a 5-person, colorful super team inspired by Gatchaman.
Having loved the show when I first saw it as a kid in the 70s I think the thing that surprised me most was just how damned explicitly violent the show is in the original. Watching dudes catch Feather Darts straight to the neck was hella awesome as an adult catching the original series as it was shown in Japan. Well, that and the fact that they had new vehicles for each new series, but honestly my love will always be the first series with God Phoenix and its vehicles.
Got the complete bluray box....twice actually 😅. And be aware....there are very recent new Gatchaman comic, published by Madcave studios. A central series, spinoffs and oneshots. I friggin' love Gatchaman
Speed Racer was the first anime I saw. It was on UHF Channel 55(along with the old Hulk cartoon and I think Shazam) in The Bronx. When my older brother yelled for me to look was was on tv, my eyes jumped out of my head. 😂 The "birdarang" was awesome. A girl, other than Wonder Woman and Jamie Summers, was kicking men's butts... big time! We were so spoiled in our youth with these groundbreaking cartoons.
It still hurts so much that Imagi studios was shut down before they could finish their Gatchaman film. They were on track to give it the same treatment as they did the ninja turtles. The live action was just so so. Barely worth mentioning, if at all? And the infinity force movie didn't have all of the team members in it. And that's all that we've gotten for a long long time. It would also be great if they made a Tatsunoku vs. Capcom 2 with all of the team. It's been 16 years since that came out.
You forgot to mention that the English version had to edited due to the violence. The English version had to animate 7 Zark 7 into the show to fill in the gaps between the cut scenes for continuity.
It also changed all their names. (Why on Earth was "Ken" changed to "Mark"?!? {stopping before I rant for pages}). I'm sorry, the English dub was NOT 'great', it was the poster child for bad dubs. Despite all this, Gatchaman is my favorite anime of all time. This is mostly due to its groundbreaking formulas.
@@PimPeccable A lot of Japanese characters and even titles are changed for western audiences, the same way Asian people have western names just to make things easier for them. I may not be Asian, but with my name I have always had "Westerners" mess up my name all the time.
The only anime I love along with Speed Racer. I'm so glad Mad Cave Studios brought it back. Its basically an anime version of Avengers and Justice League.
I saw this and immediately thought "Battle Of The Planets that's G Force!" Never heard of it as Gatchaman! And the kid's name was Keop (spelling?) I remember the noises he made when he talked but I'll always remember this show LOVED it as a child! The Fiery Phoenix and that theme song permanently engrained in my brain!
Thank you so much for doing a video on this. Let me say I am 56 years old now this is a huge part of my childhood I was watching this at 10 and the American version of course was called battle of the planets. It became a huge part of my childhood along with Star Trek and later on of course Star Wars and star Blazers. We didn't know it was called anime at that time. But I remember running around in our yard with our little cape on pretending we were GeForce lol. I bought the box at many years ago and my granddaughter is in the anime so I showed her some of them she actually liked it I was shocked. Anyway thanks for bringing up something it's so near and dear to my heart.😊❤😊😊
Battle For The Planets was my introduction to Anime. I remember being the age of 4 watching this cartoon weekday mornings on Channel 11 in nyc before going to nursery school. I learned many years later that this show was called Gatchaman. I own the DVD’s with the Alex Ross artwork on the covers.
Uchuu senken Yamato has gotten 2&1/2 really good remakes. Why then has the Science ninja team, another foundational anime from that same time period, not gotten one since the three part ova 30 years ago? It's a crime i tell you!
Gatchaman, AKA Battle of the Planets, G-Force (not the action hamster movie), and Eagle Riders. Surprisingly, I didn't see any footage of Gatchaman Crowds (or its Insight sequel series) in this video, but maybe that'll be for another time. Too bad 7-Zark-7 was a BOTP-only character who didn't appear in the original uncut airings of Gatchaman, but hey, we all have to start somewhere.
7-ark-7 was a technique to censor violence from the American version. Battle of the planets/ gatchaman/ g-force is the same " animation ", but have 3 different stories.
I LOVE GATCHAMAN!!!! I was 8 years old when I saw "Battle of the Planets" with the first Spanish dubbing that was made in Mexico. Afterwards, another dubbing was made, but only the opening is available from the first one. There is not much information about that first dubbing. I was very excited to now be able to watch the original series in Japanese, as well as Gatchaman II and Gatchaman Fighter. I have also collected the comics that Alex Ross worked on and those that Mad Cave is currently making.
G Force Battle of the Planets was my favorite show in the late 70s. I was so angry when it was replaced by (re)Voltron I never forgave the channel for it.
I watched it every day after school. Four PM on Global TV in Toronto. The names of the characters were different, though. After this, it was -Starvengers -Robotech -Star Blazers and -Voltron Great memories! 😁
Battle of the Planets was a great introduction to anime and a really important chapter of my after-school life. I rewashed quite a few of the original Gatchaman eps here on RUclips and it is a pretty quirky show that Sandy Frank released in the late 70s. If you enjoy nostalgic trips you should really seek out the Japanese version. Love these heroes. I wish more shows had been given the chance in the late 70s.
Me and my older brother watched this all the time never missed an episode it was amazing and still one of the greatest this was in the early eighties we watched it
Battle of the Planets was a core piece of my childhood. I loved them and the Phoenix. I would try to build it in LEGO. A few years ago, I bought a gorgeous model of the ship.
This was my favourite cartoon as a kid I wish they would make a movie of this that does the cartoon justice. It was called Battle of the Planets in the UK they were G-Force.
I was a UK kid in the late 70s and early 80s, loving Battle of the Planets, without knowing anything about the source material of Gatchaman until much later on. However, watching Gatchaman as an adult, shows how much better the original actually was. #KenTheEagle 😃
The original Science Ninja Team Gatchaman was definitely far better than the Americanized Battle of the Planets or G-Force: Guardians of Space. Gatchaman was more serious and character driven. Berg Katze is possibly the first androgynous villain. Ken and Joe had opposing views in the conduct of missions. They and Jun were the best members of the team, and the best characters, along with Dr. Nambu & Red Impulse Leader. I think Gatchaman was the first Americanized anime to show a touch of 'fan service' in shots of Jun.
I used to watch this in Puerto Rico in the 70's along with Mazinga Z this program was called "Fuerza G". Never missed it. Olts of anime in P.R during the 70's and 80's.
I was around 6 and seven years old when watching battle of the planets, and the American version had 7 zark 7 in his underwater lab or whatever it was. Loved it
Battle of the Planets was the favorite show and hero team of me and my friends. We each chose a favorite member. Funny, that no one liked Mark in the American version so we designated the youngest of us to be him, and another friend changed Princess from a girl to a boy. Keyop/Jinpei was my favorite and I used a set of Kerbangers or Klik-klaks as my bola and threw them at everything. We would sprint around the neighborhood and hurdle fences. It was all great fun till we got a little older. I still believe the 5 into 1 model started with Gatchaman and all that followed were influenced by it(Voltron,Power Rangers,Ronin Warriors,etc.).
I saw this first as Battle of the Planets then later as GForce. I missed the little robot and lecture after each episode. First it's transmute then transform.
LOL Back in the late 70's in the Philippines. Our week days started with Mekanda Robot(Monday), Daimos (Tuesday), Mazinger Z (Wednesday), then Thursday we switch channel for this Anime. And to end the week, switch channel back to that started the week. Its Voltes V!
Childhood nostalgia. I love the 90s OVA reboot - animation wise. And love the cameo in Infini-T Force - beautiful CG animation. The Russo Brothers haven’t been great outside the MCU; so, I have a lot of reservations. And most US Japan joint ventures have not panned out - still waiting for Gundam or Evangelion to cross over. So, I will await for actual products to come out before making judgement.
I-seen-G-Force-first-on-cartoon-network-97 some-Gatchaman-episodes-from-the-first-series- Violence-level-was-high also-Joe Asakura, also known as G-2: Joe the Condor, Mom&Dad-was were actually members of Galactor that were planning to defect, but were killed when they tried to escape the organization, with only George surviving. He was found immediately by Dr. Nambu, and was placed under his wing with the shortened name "Joe" so that Galactor would not recognize him. However, not even Dr. Nambu was aware of the significant details of why Joe's parents were under attack from Galactor. also-Among the team, Ryu is the only member who has living family members; his father and younger brother Seiji.
I remember watching Battle of The Planets/G-Force. I don't recall how many episodes that I got to see. It seemed to be on at very odd times. A year or two after that the same channel starting airing Starblazers.
Seriously go back to 1972 and compare what else was out there at the time. This show was unique and outrageous, mind blowing. I wasn't born until 74 but watching it on a early Saturday morning when I was around 10 made a lasting impression, quite literally, my first tattoo was the G symbol, my first box set was the original import (I had to see the ultra violence sans 7 Zark 7, 1 Rover 1 ) and im not ashamed to admit I had a crush on Princess and SuZans sexy voice!! Transmute!!
Batttle of the planets was what i watched in the uk didnt realise it was edited from gotchaman with most violent scenes cut out to a robot voiced by casey kasem (shaggy fame) and rover one zero one i believe need to find and watch the originals thanks for posting x
I loved this show!! The stories were complex and fantastic. The animation was better than anything I'd ever seen. And the panty shots of Princess were almost more than my pubescent self could stand.
I was 4 years old when I first saw this show, and it completely blew my mind. I watched both Battle of The Planets and later G-Force. This anime along with Starblazers are responsible for me becoming an Anime fan. Last month, I purchased the entire Gatchaman collection on bluray.
Battle of the Planets was my intro into anime, along with Lupin the Third in 1978. I started rewatching this on HiDive.
Yea, I was prolly about 5 years old when I first started seeing Battle of Planets and Starblazers. Me and my Friend would sit in side by side lawn chairs, pretending we were flying the Yamato and shooting the wave gun. Good times.
Battle of the planets.,.is it not😊
Watched it in the 80s as "battle of the planets" along with voltron. Good times
I was about the same age as you when Battle of The Planets and Star Blazers was on.
First anime I ever watched. I was in kindergarten, and i didn't know it was anime or that I'd still be watching anime in my 50's.
The Second one for me 😅First is Voltron Beast King GoLion🎉❤
Unfortunately I only got the comics, but I loved them to pieces.
Same here, I was in kindergarten or 1st grade, didn't know it was anime I just know that I liked it. I'll be 54 soon and I still do.
Ditto 💯
My first anime was Astro Boy Back in the 60's, I have all Three Gatchaman Series on Laser Disc which I brought at the HMV on 72nd Street and Broadway N.Y.C. Battle of the Planets was an edited version of Science Ninja Team. The voice of Mark was Casey Kasem. Keye Luke was Zoltar, and other voices.
Ronnie Schell as Jason, Janet Waldo as Princess, etc.
plus, there was 7 zark7, and 1rover1
Being born in 1970 I fell in love with this. It aired at some odd times, including 6:00 am! I remember getting up extra early to watch this before school. For Halloween one year my mom helped make me a Ken costume, complete with wings I could extend and drop.

This and StarBlazers was influential in my young years as to my interest in science fiction and fantasy
Star blazers caused me to join the navy...and go submarines
First anime I saw, in the UK it was called 'Battle of the Planets'.
Gatchaman - original

This was the dopest show, Battle of the Planets/G-Force. Whirlwind Pyramid, the Fiery Pheonix. Jason was my favorite character.
A was a 86 G-force fan‼️...memories for sure...the best super team of it's time.
Battle of the Planets had the best theme song of any animated TV show, or at least any animated action/adventure show. Maybe Voltron is second, which is fitting on how it's a 5-person, colorful super team inspired by Gatchaman.
You can thank the late, great Hoyt Curtain for the theme and score for each episode.
Battle of the Planets was amazing

God this defined my childhood. I still have fond memories of it.
This show has lived in my head for 50 years!
One of my favorites of all times, we need a reboot done right for this one. G-Force Forever !

-Star Blazers
and -Voltron
Great memories! 😁
🗣 *I was 6 years old watching ‘G-Force’ on a farm in a mobile home in 1981 in Ireland pure heaven when that theme music came on!* 📺
I saw Battle of The Planets in spanish. I was totally hooked at just 5 years old.

it deserves more respect! I'ld love to see a new series, movies, etc. I never knew there were 2 other series I recently discovered Gatchaman Fighter.
I remember seeing this as a kid as G-Force. So enjoyable.
I used to buy G-Force comics at the city plaza in the Canary Islands when I was a kid.
Thanks for this touch of nostalgia

An let's NOT forget the 1990s movie version had its theme song, sung by the legendary R&B group, Earth, Wind and Fire! What a TIGHT soundtrack.
Loved them back in the day
I remember watching it in the early 80s, it was on before Starblazers (aka Battleship Yamamoto). I seem to remember it as Force Five.
I remember watching Battle of The Planets/G-Force. I don't recall how many episodes that I got to see. It seemed to be on at very odd times. A year or two after that the same channel starting airing Starblazers.
I loved this show so much man 😄
Seriously go back to 1972 and compare what else was out there at the time. Transmute!!
I'm actually on episode 39, japanese with english subtitles, the best way to watch it!
Ah, "Jigokiller, the People Eating Plants part one" if I remember correctly.
@@dngillikin This is correct.
i learned to draw anime thanks to this cartoon and Sailor Moon It's a classic!
I have the blu ray, and it's awesome ! Also the Image comics are soooooooo cool.
G-Force. Battle of the Planets. Appointment TV after school back in the late 70s. The animation was stellar compared to anything else.
I remember the bad guys turn two people into Robot they killed themselve after then lives like that it were very sad
This is the first anime I've ever watched, but it was called G Force.
I remember this as G - Force.
I loved the G-force cartoon as a little kid!
I love this series!
How about the scenes where Princess got KOed?
