Is your friend Daigo Umehara? :0 The voice us the same
Personally, I like describing the guys I like as “cute” because I feel it represents a combination of being attractive, but also seeming to be a nice person along with that.
There are people who are physically good looking, but seem like they could easily be mean or moody, harder to talk to, or as if they don’t care about the feelings of those around them etc.
They’re not cute. Cute guys are nice guys. Usually they smile more and show their feelings more and are friendly and are able to be friendly without having to be flirty, so it makes it easier to approach them as a girl. Or if they’re shy that can be very cute as well.
Admittedly, usually they aren’t the toughest and “manliest”, but they don’t need to be feminine or timid necessarily. As long as they’re kind and also good looking, chances are, they’re pretty cute.
So “cute” describes both an attraction to appearance and character, while “handsome” is only appearance and “cool” is mostly character or behaviour or style. And you can think someone is cool without liking them as a boyfriend.
Dios si, yo también pienso así.
THIS
This right here is correct. I've rarely called guys I've known handsome. I think I'd be really embarrassed to do so.

I teach English in Japan and my students always call me "kawaii" even though I am a guy, but it is very much like you said I am kind of young and have also been told I have a small face. I feel like often people see me kind of like they see a puppy or kitten. My coworker who is also a guy, but is much more masculine and sporty they call "kakkoii" and I always found that interesting.
Your voice cracking when talking to your friend was hilarious. Thank you for this video! It definitely helps language learners like us! I hope there weren’t weird rumours going around your school after you made that call 😂
NOT THE WEIRD RUMORS hahaha
To me, calling a guy “cute” can mean their personality is endearing and/or they’re handsome and has a smile that makes you want to smile. If I saw a very serious looking guy who was attractive, I wouldn’t really say he’s cute because he’s not emanating that positive, kind energy that someone like you does.

Hello, I'm Japanese.🇯🇵
Oh, I always say "kawaii" to everyone regardless of gender.😂
Even from a Japanese perspective, You look kawaii ! ✨haha because you use a lot of "postpositional particle", so your way of speaking sounds very soft and kind.
¿What are "post positional particles"?
Mr./Ms.@@danielap548
Hi🙌 Post Positional Particle is a Japanese grammatical term.
It's one of the particles. And It's used at the end of a sentence or phrase to express the feelings and attitudes of the speaker.
Judging from your channel, are you a Spanish speaker ? If not, I am sorry...but if so,【¿eh?】can be a comparatively similar example although 【¿eh?】is Interjection, not Post Positional Particle.
Spanish Example :
[Llegan a la mitad de la calle, Alicia se detiene.]
Alicia: Bueno, ya hemos llegado. Gracias por la cartera, 【¿eh?】
Whether【¿eh?】is used or not, it makes sense. But by using 【¿eh?】, this sentences can be more meaningful.
(※ I'm not a Spanish learner, so if I have some error, I am sorry.💦)
As I said, 【¿eh?】is Interjection, not Post Positional Particle. However, I think they have in common in that both can express speakers' feelings.
There are many Post Positional Particle in Japanese language. Mr.Onomappu uses neutral and kind Post Positional Particle, so he is kawaii.💓
Thank you for reading my long sentences ! 🥳
Thanks for the explanation, I'm a Spanish speaker 💕💕😔

It depends on where you speak English, but in America, "cute" can be used to refer to a very handsome man, a dessert, a two-year old or a situation in which someone does something very nice.
The way you speak so clearly in a sincere tone and the way you're using symbols, expressions, body language as you speak makes an incredible communication. even tho my Japanese is not that good I DON'T EVEN NEED TO READ THE SUBTITLES TO UNDERSTAND YOU( ꈍᴗꈍ)

First thing i learnt about kawaii 2 years ago was that you don't /normally/ use it for guys 😅
I think you might be kawaii.🤷🏾♀️ Maybe I'm wrong but it seems to me like a lot of Japanese guys try to be cute more than cool anyway, so.
@@ASHERUISE haha, right?? That's what it looks like to me too!
I think we calling a guy kawaii because there is a 'moe gap' in his personality 🤔
i did a double take at your Aesop icon, haha
I think "cute" is typically used only by girls to talk about guys, whether to talk about their personality meaning something like "adorable" or "endearing" or about their appearance as "hot" or "handsome". I talked about this once with some friends, and I think most American guys wouldn't like to be called "cute". I think it's used a lot more between girls when the guy isn't around. Maybe it shows up on the internet more because of anonymity. I wonder if Japanese girls would use "kawaii" amongst themselves like "cute" in English, or not?

As a native English speaker I don't even understand the use of cute, kawaii in Japanese seems much more understandable.
I feel like "かわいい" is a different level of cuteness than "cute" haha I use it with guys too, if they smile and look super cute and I want hug them (it's basically what you said, but I don't think of it as something bad), of course that same person can do something cool or wear something that looks really good and I say かっこいい instead.
I understand there are guys who may not really like it cause it's not that "manly" haha as a woman who used to hate being called "cute" I totally get the feeling, but now I understand that not everybody uses it in a way that sounds like you're childish and not to be taken seriously

Same, we need to free him
I love the phone call😂✨ and I like that you didn’t explain it to him, you just left it a mystery🤣 make more of these videos please XD!
"Cute" is like they ultimate compliment for both genders in my country. It's like a more casual way of saying "beautiful".
It takes a “real man” (who’s comfortable with their masculinity) to compliments other men, but apparently calling them かわいい is a whole other level lol 😹😹😹 Thanks for the demonstration!!✨I wonder if he would still contact you during 夏休み after this😹
HAHAHAHAHA🤣🤣🤣
I can't your friend was probably freaking out inside💀😳😂
Most of the time, when a guy uses the word "cute" in English, it has some sort of romantic connotation. "Cute" also doesn't always mean childish or fragile, though certainly can be used in that way. It often just means "attractive" or "endearing," regardless of gender, and I have absolutely heard girls describe very masculine men as "cute" (never to their faces though, I've noticed.) I think there's a lot more separation between the definition of "cute" that is used to describe a child or an animal and the one that is used on adults.
I don't often hear guys call animals, inanimate objects, etc. "cute"; it's not unheard of, but it's usually considered more of a feminine thing. (I am in fact a girl, so take that with a grain of salt.) Women tend to use it more willy-nilly to describe each other, objects, kids, or animals, but calling a man cute, especially to his face, is very often flirting. Complementing guys in general isn't much of a thing in America, sadly. A guy calling another guy "cute" is almost always either a joke or a serious romantic advance.
I think it's used a bit more freely online though, where it doesn't matter whether or not something is interpreted as flirting. I would say that most of the people in your comment section probably did mean it in a romantic way. That being said, you're definitely a cute boy.
the start of a beutiful drama and confusion.. i love it

many people may use cute to means "Youthfully Attractive" when talking about physicality but it is not gender specific. so it can apply to buff guys or slender.

my odd classmate who is overly obsessed with Japanese culture called me handsome in Japanese but they didn’t pronounce it correctly and didn’t even know it meant 😐

Literally saw his soul leave his body everytime he had to say "kawaii" to his friend. Omg hilarious
The amount of power a cute guy has is dangerous. Girls will just give you things
The last part reminds me of a friend who calls things “cute ugly”. I suppose it’s when something isn’t cute physically but has a cute personality or charm.
Every word was like a stab to his pride, pray for the fallen soldiers
I wonder how fast you called him back after this call. LMAO 🤣🤣😆🤣 I Love the awkwardness of it.
I think in English "cute" in certain contexts has evolved to just mean "attractive" when talking about guys and girls that you're attracted to, like "wow, look at that cutie that just walked by" etc. Like it doesn't contain a value judgment about the type of physical attractiveness, whether it be more masculine or feminine, child-like or cool, just means someone that you find attractive.
Of course the primary meaning of cute is still exactly as you describe!
It can also be used as a derogatory term, like if you want to be condescending and dismissive of someone. "Oh, you managed to get 100kg on your deadlift? That's cute." (implying that that you're personally so far ahead of the other person that you're not on the same level as them, like an adult to a child)
Funny thing in Chinese is that you can definitely call a guy 可爱, especially if they're young and pretty, but I just saw someone the other day mention that if you get called 可爱 it's because you're not 帅 enough HAHAHAHAHA (implying that when people want to praise people who aren't that attractive, they'll just say 可爱 lmao)
This man has balls of steel. Good God.
Oh dear.. I feel so bad for your friend, I can feel the cringe from here XD I hope you told him it was a joke later!
the way we use "cute" in english is alot of different ways!! it can be used as super adorable like a puppy or a small child or it can be used as "hes so handsome!!" but for more feminine looking guys, like an idol or a teenage boy!
In English "cute" has multiple meanings it can mean attractive but it can also be used like its used in Japan. In English its just a casual compliment

I can definitely understand why you get a lot of comments saying you're cute, I watched another video of yours before this one and I said to myself, "He's so cute." It's not necessarily a "feminine" thing, it's your appearance, yes, but also the way you talk and act: for example, around :39, when you're explaining what guys would think if they were told they were cute, the way you were explaining it was cute i.e funny, enjoyable, somewhat naive maybe, or innocent. Also, Japanese guys act very shy and embarrassed. Very different than a Westerner, so to me it's just cute.
Edit: And yes, it's a good meaning!
The secondhand embarrassment is REAL
Three things...
1. Not enough bl lol~ more 🌝🤭
2. Personally I use cute pertaining to someones action like they have a cute reaction... ~
3. And sometimes in appearance like if I think their smile was cute~

The way i speed run clicked after seeing my lil boy Muku on thumbnail. Any A3! players here????
yes!! same
hi
i NEED to see what this male friend of yours looks like rn.
The way you describe it, "kawaii" and "cute" don't seem to be terribly different concepts between Japanese and English. There is another meaning in English like "Oh, I saw a cute boy the other day" where it would DEFINITELY translate more as "kakkoi" and you mean that the boy was attractive.
But I also think that sometimes boys are just kawaii. If you are a boy yourself, it might be harder to see it because boys don't act cute to each other as much. I know when I'm dating a guy though, he will often show me a boyishly cute side that no one else sees, like if he is wordlessly asking for cuddles or looking up at me expectantly for something. Fully grown man, just suddenly with the expression of a little boy who needs love and attention. I think everyone has these kinds of feelings about people they love, so I can see how if a boy calls another boy "kawaii", it sounds like BL haha
Must be tough ehhh~
Your friend thinks you're high on something 😂🤣
Anyways, thanks for the video, Hitoki-san 🤗🤗🤩.

I'm learning japanese and hearing you speaking is really usefull for getting use to the pronutiation and the way to speak, you also teach really useful tihngs! I'm happy that I found your channel. I hope you keep posting videos continuously
I think it actually depends a little on region🤔
From what I've seen, I think Americans often use cute to mean good looking (not necessarily just adorable, they could use it to mean pretty, hot, etc for both guys and girls) but in the UK or Australia I think cute often has a closer meaning to the Japanese version where it's used more to mean adorable
Like in the UK or Australia we can use it to say stuff like that person is so small and cute I just want to put them in my pocket type of feeling. Or like you said also with personality, like cute gestures that are innocent or wholesome~
As an American, id disagree, but i think the other American comments are from the west coast or metro areas. In the south we still get pretty mad about getting called cute.
As an American who has lived on both coasts, it depends on the person using it. I will call something cute to mean adorable, if a person is attractive I might call them cute, if a person has a positive, bubbly personality I will definitely describe them as cute. I know some men in some places think being called cute is offensive (might be a masculinity issue), and if they have a problem being called cute then I won’t use the word for them, but it’s only ever used as a compliment from me. However, that is me. Some people might use it in a derogatory fashion and to mock others. I can be rather blunt, so if I was going to call someone weak I’d literally just say that instead. I will note that I tend to use the word handsome for physically attractive males past a certain age (however if he has a sunny personality then he is still cute to me), but I have also described people (men and women) as beautiful for either their personality or appearance (their features or general form)…something like “that is a beautiful human”. It’s always meant as a compliment, and I’ve never had anyone be offended by it so far. People seem happy to just be noticed and appreciated in general. Again, this is just myself and my experiences though. Cultural differences notwithstanding.
