This is where EC is untouchable. That phrasing; just a clean guitar, nothing but chops and heart. Those first few lyrical notes when he steps back at 5:19 to properly take the solo are amazing. That thing is crying. The big 3 always like to give the other two credit. EC speaks highly of Beck and Page, and vice versa. They all have their place and special areas. This is his. Incredible solo.
A musical God with a guitar. I can hear and feel what he is saying even when he is not singing,,,only a handful of guitarists can do that. His passion is true,,you can hear it! Love you Eric,,thank you!
Jimi Hendrix was so great because he made his guitar put out sounds that weren't thought to be possible. Clapton is right up there with the best of the best because he could so blend sounds and melodies so crisp that the sounds coming out are not just notes, but raw emotion pumping out of the amp.
I've listened to a lot of solos on here, but this one gives me goosebumps. I think it's about who you love to listen to, for whatever reason. It's not a competition. A lot of it is context and decade and style/genre. Clapton doesn't rely on the shredding 'tricks' I discovered after I started playing, like sooo many do, but if they give ppl pleasure, great. Anyway, Clapton was a mindblower when he came onto the scene and taught me much about the Blues, which he is a deep student of. And he passed that love onto me. He just wanted to play like BB, and the other Blues' roots guys, and he has worked toward that goal for decades, which he shows here, in this emotion filled solo. As a guitar player, I so want his vibrato and amazing tone (clean fretting) which is great technique in itself, and few have it (but he has no patent on it). Sure, we all have our off days (and the expectations from every Clapton solo is huge). He did a PBS special for the From the Cradle album and I just wanted to throw my guitar out the window. He was so completely 'there'. MY all time favorite solo of his, is the solo from the Wheels of Fire version of Crossroads (live); it's on his first boxed set, with a couple others not quite as mindblowing. That solo gives me pure joy and something indescribable. But he loves *this* kind of Blues' playing more than that solo, as he has often said about his earlier days. And BTW, his pentatonic solos are the basis of the Blues, and most rock (EVH aside, who approaches it more like a piano). And the 'box' give you a quick way to learn/know where to solo (which many rely on for their pyrotechnics), but this solo shows that there is more to it. I saw him at his worst, alas, during the drinking days, but I understand, and he got past it. He is human, and knows it, but in that, which is the essence of the Blues, and in his striving, he puts the nail on the head more often than not. He is not the shredder he was in his 20s, but he has gone further than that, at 70 (although he has always had feeling and that certain 'something', for me, anyway, and in the '60s, he was the innovator. Hendrix wasn't famous yet, still playing as a sideman, but soon would be, much due to Clapton, who changed Jimmy's direction. Everyone stands on everyone else's shoulders that came before, and has them to thank.
Clapton exemplifies the true meaning of the phrase, "playing from the heart'! It doesn't matter how knowledgeable you are of the guitar, how technically strong you are playing the guitar, how fast and tricky you are on the guitar, if you can't express yourself like Clapton, well, then you just...play guitar.
I've loved this song from the first time I heard it. What a passion-filled performance ! The climax at the end always gets me. So glad that people are discovering the thrill of the entire 'Journeyman' album......a work of art! Peace to all. May love abound.
jesus. That was moving. I read book in high school about Clapton. I remember his insatiable appetite for George Harrisons wife. I also remember his love for blues music. This song really brings out true passion for blues that Clayton desires and he nails it. Just amazing.

The lyrics in this video tear me up every time I hear it but I keep coming back and listening...why? you know why don't you. peace & love ya'll from TX
All about what you can hear... EC's guitar gently and passionately weeps in the blues. If you cannot hear it - then you can't. There are many incredible musicians, past and present, but only a few can move your heart as Eric does with a few notes.
This is a guitar player that does not have to sing,,,you feel the drama in his guitar playing,,,,,he is by all means one of the finest guitarist. His guitar makes me cry,,smile, and just love the sound of music.
This performance was 30 years after Eric started recording the Layla album, which for my money, is his greatest masterpiece, not the least because Duane Allman plays slide (and lead guitar on several songs--i.e., Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad, etc.). And here is EC in 1999 at age 54 still tearing it up. Jimi Hendrix, Duane Allman, and Stevie Ray Vaughan (my other guitar gods) were shooting stars that burned bright and then were gone too soon. Eric is like Halley's Comet, which I saw in 1986, filling the sky, taking its time before moving on. His talent and influence stretch over 50 years. He is the one that will be remembered a 100 years from now just because of the enormity of his catalogue and versatility. His virtuosity remains stellar and supreme.
That man and his guitar are just MAGIC! I feel PRIVILEGED to have grown up with Eric Clapton, from his Yardbird days and witnessed his evolution into the musical icon he is!
You can's judge these blues guitarists on one song, one night. They are chasing those kind of perfect moments like Clapton found that night when they are improvising these long solos, trying to find the perfect path between a calm intro to a huge climax with the full band joining. The magic is not there some nights and other it clicks.
Guys calling this guy shit should show some respect. If it wasn't for guys like Clapton, guitar playing wouldn't have evolved in the way it has. Most modern guitarists would have Clapton as a role model. He plays with more passion in his pinky than some possess in their whole lives. I'd rather listen to this than some noodling shredder that has no concept of feeling.
+Andy's Mad House Tiring but true. However, I still listen to folk who noodle. Takes a lot of skill to be that fast consistently. Different skillsets I guess.

I’ve been fortunate to see Clapton through the years. Back with Derek and the Dominoes and then in the 90’s and several times in the 2000’s and not once was I disappointed in the show. I especially liked him during this time,Andy Fairweather,Steve Gadd, and Billy Preston,Nathan East.Eric always has great band members with him.

Can't stop watching this. Clapton plays it from the heart. I won't say he's the best guitarist ever like some people do, but for that music genre, yes he is definitely the best ever.
I never used to be much of a fan of Clapton's when he (and I) were younger. I always knew he was the master of his instrument, because no one can deny that, but he really didn't reach me until around 2000. He seemed to develop a lot more depth right around then, to my ear, and I've been grooving on him ever since. I don't know if he's the best who ever lived, but I do know there's no one better.

Looks like a librarian. Plays like a god
Clapton IS God!
Amazing comment.
I'm baffled that your comment doesn't have likes that surpass the 100s
Therefore librarians = gods
@@tannerpratt7734 no doubt about it
The emotion in that solo is heartbreaking...only Clapton can seem to pull something like that off
Always loved Clapton. He came along when contemporary music needed him. And he is a survivor.
"And he is a survivor."safe people tend to do that
Totally agree
Played music to my soul for nearly 6 decades. From Friday nights at the Marquee Club, and the electric session beginnings on 5LY to Spoonful and this monster of a blue blue feast. Thank you for being part of my life, my slowhand friend. With Love and awe.
One of my favorite things about Clapton is how he can make things look so effortless! Awesome!!
A musical God with a guitar. I can hear and feel what he is saying even when he is not singing,,,only a handful of guitarists can do that. His passion is true,,you can hear it! Love you Eric,,thank you!
For the people who doesn't know the name of the song is OLD LOVE 👌
Thank you
Hi nadia
ThanX 😘
Thank you so much!😉👍
thank u!
It doesn't matter how knowledgeable you are of the guitar, how technically strong you are playing the guitar, how fast and tricky you are on the guitar, if you can't express yourself like Clapton,
well, then you just...play guitar.
I've loved this song from the first time I heard it. What a passion-filled performance ! The climax at the end always gets me. So glad that people are discovering the thrill of the entire 'Journeyman' album......a work of art! Peace to all. May love abound.
Un grandissimo genio......Slowhand !!!!!
Just brilliant fluid emotional playing, with a voice to compliment it . Kudos to the rest of the band also . So completely professional.
jesus. That was moving. I read book in high school about Clapton. I remember his insatiable appetite for George Harrisons wife. I also remember his love for blues music. This song really brings out true passion for blues that Clayton desires and he nails it. Just amazing.
Brothers & Sisters, if you're here as am I listening then we're family in music. So very blessed are we have had some of the best guitarists and songwriters to ever take a stage serenade us through our lives. I feel the "best" among them can never be determined due to the wide variety and breadth of their works over the years. How about we say a prayer for those special musicians that have passed which we miss so today as well as embrace fully and cherish our favorites and the special place we hold for them...those that are still here to play for us one more time further on up the road? The lyrics in this video tear me up every time I hear it but I keep coming back and listening...why? you know why don't you. peace & love ya'll from TX
All about what you can hear... EC's guitar gently and passionately weeps in the blues. If you cannot hear it - then you can't. There are many incredible musicians, past and present, but only a few can move your heart as Eric does with a few notes.
That solo drips with coolness. Clapton is the king of phrasing and huge bends. 9+
He was is and will be one of the best to ever pick the guitar. Simply amazing eri Clapton is God
😂
This is a guitar player that does not have to sing,,,you feel the drama in his guitar playing,,,,,he is by all means one of the finest guitarist. His guitar makes me cry,,smile, and just love the sound of music.
Clapton is tied for first with Gary Moore as my favourite guitarist and I would say he is definitely in the top 5 guitarist of all time
This performance was 30 years after Eric started recording the Layla album, which for my money, is his greatest masterpiece, not the least because Duane Allman plays slide (and lead guitar on several songs--i.e., Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad, etc.).
Anybody can say what they want Clapton is the best,His sound is so clean and crisp.
Beautiful weeping note bends start at 5:19 Old solo is one of his most soulful of any solos love it Eric!!!!
Clapton is proof that you don't just need the technical ability to 'say' it on the guitar, you also need to have something to say....
Thats good advice
yea like what did I just do ??? it seems to fit.....i wish I knew why thing work!!
He did that with tears in heaven
And yet he’s not a technically sloppy as guitarist like Page and Hendrix were.
@@chrisvassos1869 Hendrix was nowhere near as sloppy as Page
What can I say that hadn't already been said. Clapton is by far one of the best SALUTE !!!!!!!
+Paul Stewart Clapton was glad Hendrix died. Otherwise, he wouldn't have a career.
+Rezin Harris Hendrix loved Clapton and wouldn't have his sound if not for cream.
+Andy's Mad House Tiring but true. However, I still listen to folk who noodle. Takes a lot of skill to be that fast consistently. Different skillsets I guess.
+Christopher Blankley But Clapton did not like Hendrix.
+Rezin Harris You are just stupid. Clapton helped Hendrix get famous
.
tonight clapton is carrying me thru a good friends death. His tremendous ability to wrap that music around my heart and allow the tears to flow and release this pain in such a pleasurable way. Its not going to stop the sadness. Nothing ever stops that but it does dull it and allows me to keep a clear head.I am thankful for the people that play with such feeling . They have carried me thru some of the toughest times in my life and tonight is one of them.
I grew up listening to all the old British guys but Clapton has never been that high on my list of favorites, I recognize his talent and the fact that so many took inspiration from him but he just never really did it for me personally
Not just a guitarist, not just a voice, he writes a damn good song too!
And don’t forget the assist from Mr. Cray ;)
You should be thanking Robert Cray too. Another blues friend of Eric's...
He made this song's existence possible.
Hands down, the greatest guitar player alive today! Nothing like slow hand
larry mansfield you need to watch some flamingo guitarists...
Bic narok Flamenco*
ever listen to joe bonamassa(?) opened for muddy waters when he was 12.
my fault, he opened for b b king.....first time I have been wrong in my life.
Try watching Amin Toofali, you'll never call Clapton a god again.
this is superb, thanks for sharing it. i'd always respected EC and his music but hadn't a real hardcore yearnin to see him live. the opportunity arose, i "went along" and was blown away..... downright intense and everlasting concert. as a guitarist i really like watching his Eric-unique left hand work.
Eric's a miracle far beyond his music, as well.
Well said my friend ! Someone finally that knows talent....
Oh! The raw EMOTION here! I feel it! Like a fine wine, Mr Clapton! As for the guitar solo, all of Eric Clapton's guitar solos are AWESOME! EVERY SINGLE ONE!! He is only the best of the best! And that's in the world!!!!
His 'Unplugged' version of this solo ("Old Love") is almost too good for words!
Clapton…touch, passion and depth of feeling.
I will never forget my 5th grade music teacher Mr.Reems everyone thought he was weird and made fun of him cause he looked weird but I was raised to never judge anyone and I looked forward to his class everyday because he showed us real true music and I will never forget the day he played Eric Clapton and I fell into my own world hearing the beauty of his solos I thank Mr.Reems for showing me the true art of music in every aspect man had amazing taste in music now im 24 and I listen to everything not a genre I won’t give a chance that man really opened up a door in my mind to music I never knew I was stuck on rap and that shit is trash now unless it’s a true artist who is lyrically ahead of there time but the rest is shit without Mr.Reems my music taste would be so crappy
I absolutely love hearing about when a certain teacher had a good lasting impact on your life. We all had that one decent teacher we didn’t appreciate until we are older
so many amazing guitarist is underrated. they're just pioneers.
I SEEN ERIC 210 TIMES FIRST TIME I HEARD HIM PLAY I WAS 8 YOUR MUSIC HAS BEEN THE ONE CONSTANT IN MY LIFE AND YOU SAVED IT MORE TIMES THAN I CARE TO MENTION AND I THANK-YOU FOR ALL OF IT GOD BLESS YOU SLOWHAND
You play music like this from you heart and soul .
Amen!
how right you are.
E
It's sad that so many people don't understand it. But then again, it's a blessing and a real gift from God to be able to use this type of power; it's not meant for everybody.
Clapton breathes life into and thru his guitar..
Clapton is one of the best. his riff sounded like Carlos. I grew up in SF and seen almost everyone from the late 60's to the 90's. Santana is one of the best also. Very underrated in the US
beautiful😊😊 they use music as a therapy for epilepsy and seizure disorder, which I have. I listen to this almost every day, and it gives me those couple minutes of calm....thank you😘
Can't stop watching this. Clapton plays it from the heart. I won't say he's the best guitarist ever like some people do, but for that music genre, yes he is definitely the best ever.
amazing song/solo performance. i love they way his hands just fall at the end ... like that was just nothing
Clapton is a fucking legend. One of my favorite guitarists along with Stevie Ray Vaughn and Hendrix. Jimi Page. Derek Trucks
That's my three guys right there! Man it's gonna hurt when Clapton's time will come.
You can put them in any order.
Where is Gary Moore?
all 3 in any offer fanfucking tastik
And dont forget Tom Morello
What this guy can do with a single note is quite astounding
I never used to be much of a fan of Clapton's when he (and I) were younger. I always knew he was the master of his instrument, because no one can deny that, but he really didn't reach me until around 2000. He seemed to develop a lot more depth right around then, to my ear, and I've been grooving on him ever since. I don't know if he's the best who ever lived, but I do know there's no one better.
TYVM fot the up...Clapton one of the 10 best guitarists in the world (in my opinion that is) i'm no expert i just know what my ears love....greetings to all from Greece/Canada
He just keeps getting better and better as he is getting older!! Amazing!
It’s weird how six strings can create such an emotional story
Without the frets, they couldn't.
@@Nick_Taylor. u heard of a fretless guitar
@@jacobwatts1824 We're on a Clapton thread of him playing one with frets. I see no correlation to fretless guitars in your original comment.
@@Nick_Taylor. I’m saying if he had a fretless guitar he could still play this but you have to have strings for it to be a guitar wise ass stop tryna cause problems i literally just asked you a question
@@jacobwatts1824 he literally couldn't play anything like this with a fretless guitar. lol.
Clapton is a huge guitarist , love him❤️
A lifetime of guitar mastery condensed into several minutes. Bravo! There will never be another Clapton.
This was what I was brought up on my dad took me to see him live as an 8 year-old I am forever truely great full for that moment in my life. As it was the start of a love affair with music that shows no boundaries. Layla blew me away . Slow hand is a true legend in the guitar stakes. But the greatest guitarist out there makes it so effortless xx
Eric Clapton is my favorite guitar player. To me he is the greatest ever.
This is pure art. 🤟🏻
This solo is amazing
Just amazing!!!!
This has to be the best solo of Eric I've ever heard HOLY SMOKES!
Everything clapton is like gold to us. Had the privilege of seeing him 5 times. Wasn't enough.
no one plays with as much feeling as this guy
Casey McKinney gilmour and knopfler I think could qualify
Buchannan.
Casey McKinney a few do
Casey McKinney bb king, eric johnson have amazing tones aswell
Robert Johnson
Every single Eric's solo is amazing.
Best living guitar player.
He is a great guitarist....but Steve Howe and Jeff Beck are still performing..
When you're good, you tell the world. When you're great, the world tells you... And when it comes to Clapton, the world has spoken.
Eric at his best, so much of himself he puts into every piece. One great artiste and musician. A favourite of mine for years.
please just enjoy the music and stop saying, "this guitarist is better" etc. it becomes boring. Artists do not make music to be compared but to be listened to !
Cool video by the way
Absolutely agree. So many different styles and interpretations.
Grantuno Well said Grantuno
Hear! Hear! Grantuno!
Grantuno hes no g. Harrison
Grantuno Eric Clapton has the most skill! He is by far the best ever EVER! I have a 45k audiophile stereo and know quality! Eric is the King!! None more accurate or precise
Anyone care to mention what a great blues voice Eric has too??? :)))
I've followed him for 52years been playing no not playing with it. Eric simply sings from the GUT as Buddy Miles would say. He feels it before he even plays it that is, its gift and an art
one of the few that gets better over time
You're right it does get better now he's in a place that he thought he would never be he has three beautiful girls and a wonderful wife. I think he could be around for 10 more years not doing exactly as well as he is now but he'll be around at least he's happy and content and complete as he says he is and he feels normal more than ever
Christopher Blankley i
Erci CLAPTON ,by far the. BEST,I HAVET BEEN TO THAT IS 23 TIMES AND COUNTING..
IT'S NOT THAT HE IS GOOD , IT'S HE IA GREAT.
I LISTEN To him ,he just plays.
My god this is so beautiful.
I hitchhiked from KC to Des Moines to see Clapton on the Wheels of Fire tour. Fifty years later - and I've seen just about everyone - he is still the man. He is to my generation what Mozart was to his.
Were sooo lucky we still have him around😢🔥 he is one of the greatest out there ever🎸🌹🌹🌹
I don't how but every single time he is playing different solo but it feels like it's the studio version.👌🏻
this is insane! That being said his and Steve Winwood's cover of Little Wing is still my favourite of Clapton's guitar talent
+MyNameIsGhost Could you maybe post a link ??

Many great guitar players, he's one of the best ever.
Clapton is the only one whos been inducted to the rock n roll hall of fame 3 times. Every band he has been in is a legendary band, derek and then dominos, cream, yeardbirds. Plus he was briefly in the plastic ono band with john lennon.
Man that solo has got so much of life in it.... really amazing
I am 66 years old, grew up in Houston and Austin. First concert I saw was a KILT end of school spectacular. B.J. Thomas, a few others and the headliners were The Shangrilas,? of Leader of the Pack fame. They did have a big ol motorcycle on stage for the song. I just say that to say my friends and I saw all the greats from '66 till, what, '78, '79. Hendrix, Clapton, Zepplin, Stones, Allman Bros, L.Skynyrd,
