Another great video! That's so true what you said about how you are outgrowing these iconic locations. I mean yes, You can't go wrong with these popular locations, but the thing is that there's no same thrill and excitement in it anymore than how it's used to or how you first shot them for the first few times. I guess that's when your creativity comes in like you said in the video and start seeing things and places with fresh look and start looking for something different in your own unique way to approach it. Super helpful Tip, Lindsay. Keep up it. Cheers!

Very good content, Sarah. As a struggling photographer, landscape or otherwise, I have found that it’s hard to find creativity when you’re conditioned to see what everyone has done before. Those are the images that we’ve looked at time and time again, images that have given us inspiration to go out and create our own in our own style, but then we get caught with those images imprinted in our minds and it definitely diminishes our ability to see something unique and special without struggling to “unsee” what’s been imprinted.
You have risen to the challenge and produced some beautiful images that are far more refreshing to look at than the iconics. Well done!

Hey Sarah, thank you for being where you are...taking photos and living in a place I hold so close in my heart. I lived in Banff for a couple years from 98 to 00 and loved it. I am an amateur photographer since 2020 and live in Quebec. I remember taking pictures of Bow Falls and Moraine lake with a throw-away-camera. I hope to return soon with my new passion of photography. Thanks for the video and all the best. Cheers

Completely agree with the premise here! Recently I met up with a friend to do an all day shoot near where she lives. We went to a nearby pretty canyon and got some great shots. Then at lunch, I brought up the idea of driving south of town where it's flat, empty and pretty much the antithesis of a beautiful backdrop for a shoot. So we ended up shooting in a wide open sage brush filled field next to a fence and a cattle guard crossing. It was perfect. We were more inspired by that spot than the canyon.

I just stumbled on your channel today with this video. I absolutely get what you are saying, and actually just did a blog entry that shares many of these views. I’m a little embarrassed because I just found you. You popped onto my YT timeline. Most likely because I shoot Canon and was looking at videos. Anyhow, I absolutely love your work and am in such awe of what you create. This video hit home because I just feel like social media can suck the creativity out of you sometimes and seeing the same shot after shot just doesn’t add value for me in who I follow and what I shoot. In my journey to being a photographer I just find myself wanting to stay clear of the popular shots and just have fun creating something new. Anyhow just hearing you talk about how you feel definitely made me feel like I wasn’t alone. Anyhow great job! Just added you on IG and holy smokes. Huge fan! Beautiful work.

Thanks Sarah. A number of photographers I used to shoot with decided, 20 years ago, to just stay away from places like the Moraine Lake ant hill. They thought there were just too many people all taking similar images. With the advent of digital, that changed a bit as one can now more easily make something different out of something familiar - but the motivation to staying away was based more upon why they photographed in the first place - that being a love of nature and not so much a need for social media success. Like you indicate, there are so many other wonderful places where the reward is huge for small efforts, and where there is human element is no so dominant.

If you look at his work, it is not about iconic locations, but rather about iconic light and iconic compositions. Maybe his work would not play very well today in our world of social media apps. I came back from a two week Icelandic photo trip and was feeling exactly what you described but I wasn't sure why I felt that way, and you just cleared it out for me. Of course I went to all the famous Iceland sites, waterfalls, beaches, caves, volcanoes and later I'd be hours looking at all of my photos and thinking... what is new here? Great video and message. I am of the same mindset regarding iconic locations. For example, I have never photographed the Tetons with the iconic barn in the foreground. I'm always exploring backroads looking for foregrounds in the Idaho side. In workshops, I often look for positions away from the other participants so that I can capture a different perspective even if it is just from a lower angle.

As a fellow landscape photographer, I understand how somewhere like Moraine Lake is to you. I’ve been fortunate to photograph the Grand Canyon and Sedona for years. It's the reason I avoid places that everyone seems to photograph here in AZ, I have no interest in taking shots thousands of people take daily. Take your shot with the roots, I bet the number of people that have photographed that would number in the single digits, and look how absolutely breathtaking it is. Individual and utterly stunning.

I think of a person is first starting out that it's ok to copy similar compositions as a way to learn how to use the right techniques and editing. That way you have something to compare to. But I agree that once you have the knowledge, you should find your own compositions. I would love to go to Utah to some of the desert areas and take milky way photos. There's so many unique structures out there. But at the same time I also want to go to those iconic locations to take my own pictures. But if I was selling prints I would definitely want to separate my compositions from other photographers. What would be cool is to get permission to go on private property to take photos that no one else has access to.

Moraine Lake is an easy win as a photographer - it’s hard to take a bad photo of it. I’ve got my own large one on my wall. A few years ago, my son had a hockey game at the Banff arena, and since I drop him off an hour before the game, I decided to pop across the road to get a sunrise shot of Vermillion Lakes (Mt Rundle)…I have hundreds of photos from there, in all seasons, because it’s easy, and in these digital photography days it costs nothing to try. When I got there though, there were photographers on the ice, and another group of photographers (tour?) at a spot I’ve photographed from lots…all waiting for sunrise. In January. I took a photo of the photographers all preying for the sun rays behind Mount Rundle :-) but it was a good reminder to explore more, and try new photo opportunities. I still stop at Vermillion Lakes though if I’m passing by to add to my collection ;-)

I drove from Banff to jasper, and I can say over the last few years it's gotten dirtier with people not using washrooms. I've traveled between Banff and Jasper for over 20 years, and I've stopped in Banff for maybe a coffee. Lake Louise mostly explore the Bow Valley Parkway stopping along the way and talking to people at Morant Curve. I've stopped in the parking lot of Lake Louise and with so many people I just left. I enjoy the Ice Field highway, might not take as many pictures now but in flower season maybe a few more. People are not friendly any more they get in your picture. If I like it, I'll take a picture, but I may still travel to Maligne Lake, just to capture the Tiger lilies. People need to go back to using washrooms, garbage and other things. This is just not only in Jasper this I've seen in BC and Alberta. Respect nature and get out and enjoy it but keep it clean.

This may seem weird because I FINALLY made it to Moraine, but I agree and I've felt this way for a long time. Sometimes we shoot these places for that confirmation that we've shot something the big dogs shoot. Know what I mean? That pat on the back that you fit the mold, you did well because someone bigger than you did it as well. BUT I do think these places are 100% amazing, and need to be photographed. They're beautiful, and you have a lot to add to them as well! BUT, the social media pat on the back that you "got that shot" kinda bugs me. And I totally understand where you're coming from as well, I think it makes perfect sense! Although I'll be sad now not to get that last hike in with ya 😂😢

Well said, I agree that it is so easy to get drawn into the iconic shots. They are iconic for a reason. That said I don't want my photos to look the same as many other photographers. Personally, I have been hiking a lot more but I might be taking that too far. I get different pictures but maybe not as creative as I would if I spent less time hiking and more time carefully studying a closer location.
Still, I have a growing dislike for what I think of as drive-up photography. Been there-done that, which is ok but now I want something more novel. For me, the exploration is almost more important than the photograph.

Great comments, Lyndsay. I recently subscribed to your channel simply because I like some of your compositions. I’m not into the yellow dress theme but I get it and I do think it is a lovely artistic touch and of course your brand. But that aside, your compositions are awesome as well as how you process your images. Like many who are on RUclips, we are not watching to find photos we can buy but rather to learn so that we can enjoy the art of photographic image making ourselves. For me this is especially landscape photography. Not so I can sell or compete but simply because, like people who prefer to cook their own meals rather than go to a fancy restaurant, I like to make artwork that I can hang in my home. And as you know, the process - being out in nature and look every so carefully at the beauty - is a big part of the motivation. But when we default to “only” the iconic compositions that others have captured thousands of times we don’t learn how to make and create art, we only learn how to imitate others. So I look forward to see your compositions in future videos. Not so I can copy them but to see what it is about them that I like and then see if I can apply that learning to locations near me. Thanks again and I look forward to what you will have to share in the future.❤

But, the leaves are changing here and aren't going to wait, so I'm headed to the Smoky Mountains today no matter how crowded it is with tourists. I'm sure you'll figure out where you need to be. No matter where that is, I'm sure you'll make great photos. And we'll love seeing them.

I totally agree with you...the iconics have become too touristy for me...get up at 2 am and then you still fight with 250 people...its nuts...and every composition you could possibley do, has been done...no more originality...and then with more people, there is more rules, less freedoms and more garbage and less respect...I'm out...look for locations that most will never see, except for my images, find compositions that can never be replicated...I think you're definitely on the right track...stay original!!

Agree Ron! So well said. I love the touristy spots for everyone who needs to see these beauties at least once and then get out there off the beaten track to explore! 💛

What happens when it's too easy? How to make the most of where you are - it's the story and the depth of the story. Of course - have a stunning location to do it is not needed but it can make it more visually pleasing. What are the factors that your location lends to and helps tell the story? Good topic.

Well said Jenna! 💛 At the end of the day all the spots are beautiful but I do feel I can challenge myself so much more by getting out and exploring!

Hey, slower with the images at the end of the video please. They flashed by so fast that they were virtually subliminal. They're worth spending so much more time on than that.

I live in BC lower mainland area, I just got back from thew Rockies and was thinking the same, just not that exciting as it used be, feels like your banging out the same old same old, year after year. I was thinking to myself this could be the last time I head out there for a while, debating if I want to hit Abraham for the ice bubbles and cracks this season.
