No stage manager improvements, but hey at least we can make some weird multicolour AI clip-art…
Really annoyed about no stage manager changes. All they really needed to do was loose the four window limit and add the snapping stuff from the new macOS.

Soooo many disappointments from those who were drawn into the overhype of thinking iPadOS would be almost MacOS-like. The media/content creator community do this every year for every Apple event hoping, praying, that the iPad/iPadOS can be a true Mac/Windows laptop replacement. 🤦♂️
Here’s the issue: People who want a more MacOS-like experience on their iPads are the extreme minority. Apple is not going to go through the expense and time creating something that most users will not benefit from. Keep in mind that MOST people are not power users and the content and features of the iPad are more than adequate for millions and millions of users.
It’s kind of similar to the old manual transmissions vs automatic transmission argument for vehicles. There’s a small contingent of car enthusiasts would want manufacturers to build more MT cars. And the reason you don’t see much of that is because no one buys MT cars anymore. Even if a manufacturer started producing more MT cars, that’s no guarantee that people - even MT fans - would even buy them.
So why would Apple even exercise the thought of putting more Mac-like features in their iPads? Truth is, even though that may excites some people, they STILL won’t buy them because there also has to be other things to complain about. Basically, those who complain about the lack of features in these updates really have no intention of buying these iPads anyway so what the hell are you really complaining about? 😂
By and large, the content creator community only serves a small section of the community - other creators and tech enthusiasts. The remaining majority can fulfill all their requirements - work and fun - through the use of iPads exactly as they are intended.
Does that mean iPads should never get some MacOS-like features? No. But as long as the media keeps overhyping what the iPad is capable of, the more disappointed tech-heads become. It’s laughable seeing how “frustrated” you all are.
Don't discount Apple's ability to cater to the most extreme of Apple fanboys. They produced the Vision OS for their beta testers who all shelled out $3500 each for the goggles and then complained the headset is too heavy and they developed migraines. I will, however, be first in line when they bring down the price significantly and make a lighter headset that fixes what the beta testing community (mostly YT influencers) complained of. You can tell CL is so over it since he did not mention the Vision OS improvements in VisionOS18 😂
@@tomsop Well, your example really has nothing to do with the issue of “software limitations” for the iPad. My main point was about the unrealistic expectations of iPadOS by the media/content creators that do nothing more than perpetuate the idea that iPadOS has to cater to the more tech-savvy community. They completely miss the point of the iPad which serves the needs of an overwhelming majority of professional and casual users.
And keep in mind that there are hundreds of professional occupations that use the iPad, not just content creators and video editors.
With all due respect, with such an expensive iPad Pro, this update was one of the most shameful I've ever seen, a huge lack of respect for people like Christopher Lawley who love the iPad. Anyway!
I am looking forward to iPadOS 19!
As a new iPad owner, I'm pretty disappointed. I do like the new customization options like the icon color changing and moving icons around. But these are only new for iOS and iPadOS. Not only has Android let you do this forever, but macOS has let you move icons around freely forever, too. Also I wish I could fit more icons in a row. Feels like there's still too much padding when I try to put icons at the edge of the screen and it should be able to fit more.
But outside the customization, all we really got for iPadOS was the math notes with the calculator and the new navigation bar. Cool, I guess. But the features I really wanted in iPadOS 18 were Stage Manager improvements (drop the 4 window max), background tasks, an improved files app, and Pro development tools like Xcode and a terminal app. Also, where is the Journal app for iPad? It's crazy this is only available on the iPhone.
QoL fixes that should have been in it for a long, long time, thanks for the summary!

Very disappointed on iPadOS :/ i really love using the iPad, and I want it to be my everything computer! I don’t want to buy a Mac/PC considering the ipad i own has an M2 chip!!! Like cmon now

Fantastic video! Anyway, it’s really crazy that the calculator has only now arrived on the iPad.
iPadOS 18 gave me a reason to look outside this walled garden. I sold my M1 Pro to buy a Tab S9 plus. Atleast the microsoft apps works really well. Also the dex is super cool and really usefull.😊
Still no clipboard manager. Still no choice of fonts in Notes. Still no proper file manager. And these are not Pro features.
This annoys me as using a third party clipboard manager is a privacy risk - this really is something apple should do
CL, I wish you the best - gonna be difficult year for IpadOS content. I will understand if I see more portable battery charger videos.
I’m going to get weird with the channel. Focus on a lot of apps and stuff like building a gaming PC and using moonlight.
Calendar update looks nice, I expect not to use third party apps just to integrate calendar schedules with reminders. But other things… i don’t know what Apple wants to do with iPad. A big screen iPhone? Is this really for “Pro?”

You can’t show any software until the public beta is out. I will then. There is an NDA in place. I know a bunch of people break it, but they are also the people that don’t get invited. It’s a fine line I have to walk.
Wait for it. I didn’t come to complain about any of the AI features. In fact, it’s given me the reason to upgrade my iPhone when the 16 lineup becomes available.

The update was decent at best, dont get me wrong i like the updates but i just feel its lacking. Left me wanting more honestly.
They need to add all the features that Safari has and is getting to the News and Books App’s.
I waited on iPadOS18 before replacing my M1 12.9 512GB 5G with pencil and Magic Keyboard with the new M4 ones, hoping iPadOS would be improved, with being able to format external drives, a proper Finder, a better file system with Multiple Users, what did I get? A calculator and some gimmicks.
Thats me out, I have ordered a Surface Pro, 12 core, 16GB.
I swapped from having owned every iPhone to a Fold 4 in 2022, and dont miss iOS at all, I’m now starting to feel the same about the iPad. So much potential but Apple just want to maximise their revenue, rather than give users the device we all know the iPad could be, I can dock my iPad with a USB 4 Dock, Ultrawide display, etc. And constantly run into the artificial borders this big phone OS gives me, meanwhile Dex mode on my Fold just works.
This is the exact same situation I'm in. I purchased it on hope for WWDC to finally make some great announcements.
I've also decided to sell my iPad, MacBook and MacMini. And again, the same as you I'm going to purchase a Surface Pro to replace them all.
@@heavybaked Its a shame as the hardware is good, but Apple are deliberately crippling the iPad Pro to protect MacBook sales. I guess when you are at the top of the tree, the only way is down, and with around 50% of income coming from the iPhone, they need to try to grab as much cash as possible.
I travel a lot for work, and having one do all device is important to me, if i can get away with just cabin luggage then I am a happy chappy, That’s why I love my Fold 4, its a phone, tablet and desktop PC, and it will integrate better with Windows 11. Oh well Apple, it was fun, perhaps one day you will realise that investing in iPadOS was investing in your future.
I think Math Notes is more than just text based on iPhone - you can draw. Just not with the pencil. You have to use our "natural stylus." :) You can do it on Mac too apparently - but how you'd write - IF you can write - IDK. On a trackpad? with a stylus mouse?
After watching the WWDC opener twice, I was sure I'd been bamboozled about what this new iPad Pro would be able to do. It's no wonder they had the flashy iPad Event over a month before WWDC. They wanted a bunch of early adopters like me to bunny up for the most expensive iPad ever, without knowing that the M4 chip and dual OLED screen were just window dressing. There isn't much behind it. Aside from toys and tricks this new iPad doesn't seem to be able to do much that my iPad Pro 2'nd Generation could do. And that is a crying shame.
The iPad is my main personal device, I use it for all my personal stuff at home and as complementary device at work (we use Windows PC’s at office). I was looking to upgrade it thinking that with the new powerful devices they would bring better improvements but I figured it was better to wait to wwdc before buying the new one…. and now I am eyeing a Surface Pro 9. Tbh the only things stopping me are that: I genuinely enjoy using apple products and many of the apps I’ve used for years (Bear, Sorted3, iAnnotate, cheatsheet…) are apple only.
Tbh its sad Apple doesn’t get that some of us really just want to use the iPad as our main computer and how frustrating it is that they cripple such a powerful and fun device.
I really think that Apple should now DEFINITELY REMOVE the "Pro”moniker from the iPad line-up! iPadOS it's ridiculous and NOT pro at all. When (and IF) we'll see a TRUE file system, a TRUE multitasking and virtual memory management, a TRUE support for actual mouses and mouse pointer, a TRUE handling of external peripherals and a TRUE external monitor support, THEN and ONLY then they could stick the "Pro" moniker back again.
I’m upset that iPadOS doesn’t also get all the updates to MacOS - like Mission Control (iPad to iPad) or control my phone from an iPad - BTW this would be great if it also worked iPad to iPad as I have multiple iPads
9:55 my mailboxes and archives are crazy. Hopefully AiOS 18 will help me clear it out by analyzing it to make it sane.
What about the Photos app? I don't rememeber CL talking about it. As a power user do you not use the photos app? I find it does not benefit me. If I save every video to Pro Res and every image to camera raw then Icloud fills up quickly. I won't have enough photos in Icloud to make use of the app before I have to offload the files to my computer or to storage. What do the serious camera users do here? Bypass Photos app?
There’s a section on it. Apple didn’t give me any B-Roll for it and the dev betas are under an NDA until the public betas.
With the faking your handwriting features I thought GoodNotes already does this so not really that new a feature?
Why is everyone complaining about moving the apps anywhere but it’s locked to a grid? It’s the same on Android. It’s a grid. when you add an app to the home screen on Android if you’re holding it long enough, you’ll notice that there’s an outline on your home screen of where your app can snap into place anywhere on the grid.
It’s not really a complaint on my end, but I know people will ask so I figure I would just say it in the video.

It’s not a bigger iPhone, there is a lot more you can do with it, but it is a disappointing update.

Bad WWDC for iPad Pro. Sorry you didn't get much off your wishlist. Feels almost like iPad Pro has been abandoned almost as soon as it's been launched. It's a total bummer that iPadOS didn't get the fixes we're looking for. I want it to be my everything computer, but external monitor support is buggy as hell (we don't all have a studio display). No display scaling, can't resize the dock, only one audio source, external webcam/mic support is unreliable. Files is unreliable, slow, clunky. Stage manager is just frustrating as hell - takes forever to set up the stages, then you can't keep them. And still 4 windows! Why iPad didn't get the iPhone app or Journal I'll never know - they are a natural fit. I really don't want much new shiny, I just want them to make it as usable as the macbook. Background processes that actually work. Peripherals actually work reliably. File manager that actually works. Sensible window management. I can't understand why any of this is so hard.
Help me to understand the side camera shot - you're talking to me, but you're not. It would be like watching the news, but while the anchor looks at camera one, they'd be airing camera two. It's awkward feeling. It's kinda like when ESPN commentators do the reverse - they talk to their partner, but then turn to the camera while still seemingly talking to their partner. These are things we don't do in every day life.
The lack of more “real” iPad improvements is Apple saying buy a Mac AND an iPad please…

@@chidorirasenganz there’s a misunderstanding, I’m not asking for macOS instead of iPadOS on the iPads, just a better stage manager and an improvement on proper website management on certain sites such as government, education, driving courses, work courses etc….

FYI - Math calculator is actually a new feature of Notes.
Kudos to Apple PR for getting the mundane "new" calculator app to have a shortcut button to go directly to a new notes document with math calc activated.
Makes it look like putting the long-overdue calculator on the iPad is some kind of breakthrough when, I bet, they were going to add math calc to notes with or without a calculator on the iPad. 😉
Math Notes is in calculator and notes. If you use it in calculator it syncs over to notes, but you are still in the calculator app.
Actually, until you are a digital painter/artist that heavily leverages on the Apple Pencil, the iPadPro line-up is totally hilarious and totally useless for the 99.99999% of people. Actually Apple is really KILLING the iPadPro.
iOS 18 and ipadOS 18 will be terrible for battery life. I have the new M4 ipad pro and no new noticable features for the masses is a disgrace. No update on stage manager or any mention of the new M4 chip. Calculator App should not have been the highlight. Will we get the option to hide the new side bar on ipadOS 18 or will it cut into content?
Also.
Apple Will be forcing users to now talk to their products rather than Touch this will significantly drain the battery with your microphone on all the time. The only feature I like is iPhone mirroring to MacBook I wonder if there will be an IOS restriction to not allow older iOS versions to mirror. Will a data plan be required to use the new mirror features.?
Can we accept incoming video calls from iphone? And switching the flashlight icon and camera app will be great finally I saw it could even be a shortcut
Transcribe audio? Stupid iPhone cannot transcribe what I say directly into it with any degree of reliability
