    It doesn't get any better than Kimi at McLaren. The fastest driver since Ayrton Senna.
    Enjoy it. You'll never see another driver and car combo like it again.

    Kimi arguably should have had two championships in 2003 and 2005. To challenge for the title in a year old car is an achievement in its own right. I doubt Schumacher would have done that if Ferrari went the whole of 2003 with their 2002 car that McLaren did, that would have been outpaced by the Williams of Montoya. But Kimi was more consistent than anyone else, what cost him that title was the engine failure in Nurburgring and the first lap collisions in Spain and Germany. In 2005, he had the fastest car since round 4 for the championship, but unreliability cost him at least 6 victories (San Marino, Nurburgring, France, Britain, Italy, Germany) and outpaced Montoya in the same car.

    Despite only having one championship under his belt, the impression he left is on the same GOAT-Level as Schumacher or even Senna.........which is beyond impressive considering that for most of his career (i would argue) that the odds were mostly against hm. McLaren wasnt reliable as it should have been and Ferrari (maybe outside of 2007) always made him the second driver almost as if he were worthless...............a lot of it probably has to do with them not understanding (or refusing to understand) Kimi's style.
    Lotus wasnt high-tier enough (despite that, Kimi easily competed with the top dogs for the championship) and Alfa was simply low-tier (and despite that, he did managed to do some impressive stuff).
    And to be honest.............even when playing F1 games, it feels empty when Kimi isnt there. It simply makes me sad..........unless its before Kimi's time, then Mika (GOAT on his own) was there.

    Thanks for the compilation, great video. Kimi, what an amazing driver. Such a pity that during his peak he had to share grid first with two of the GOATs. He was definitely fast between 2003-2006, but it was almost impossible to shine near Schumi and Nando. At least he could harvest a title in one of the weirdest seasons ever, and he delivered well during his first journey in Ferrari. That duo Massa-Kimi was probably the last one were the Scuderia didn't have clear 1-2 roles, and they both were very close to each other... good times. Thanks again for compiling this, I really miss the 2000s F1

    • @ciaronsmith4995
      @ciaronsmith4995  Год назад +1

      Kimi is one of the GOATS and was arguably higher rated than Alonso in that era - or at the very least equal as Martin Brundle states at the beginning of the video. Kimi only lost 2003 and 2005 because his car was unreliable, and Kimi was higher paid than Alonso by the time MSC retired for a reason. Kimi shined as much as anyone to be honest - MSC literally retired because he didn't want to face Kimi in the same team

    • @rafamartinez6706
      @rafamartinez6706 Год назад +1

      In 2003 Kimi was definitely higher rated than Alonso, cuz Alonso had only one year in Minardi and one year as a test driver. But after 2004 and 2005 I think there’s not a lot of discussion, as Alonso was definitely the most talented driver on the grid, retiring Schumi and getting two WC without driving the fastest car in any of them. Salary? Yeah, Renault was one of the teams with the lowest payrates. But well, when Nando went to McLaren and later on to Ferrari he was the top paid driver of the grid and the most demanded driver.
      I think we all should remember that Alonso retired (and beat F2F) Schumi after 5 championships in a row, and beat peak Kimi while he was driving one of the fastest cars (true, a bit unreliable) of the last 2 decades. Alonso is the most talented driver by far since the 2000s.

    • @ciaronsmith4995
      @ciaronsmith4995  Год назад +1

      @@rafamartinez6706 Brundle was speaking at the end of 2004 in the video above. In 2004 Kimi was easily higher rated than Alonso, and in 2005 Kimi won the prestigious International Driver of the Year award - not Alonso. Did you actually watch F1 outside of Spanish media those years? It sounds like you're Spanish or something. Alonso was beaten by Trulli in 2004 (before Jarno left Renault 3 races before the end), so any magazine at the time was saying his stock was lowered. Kimi was considered the absolute fastest in F1 even after Alonso won 2005. Kimi was also more popular so I would disagree - Kimi was shining even more brightly in many ways. Only because his car exploded all the time did he not win 2003 and 2005. Simple really.

    • @rafamartinez6706
      @rafamartinez6706 Год назад +1

      @@ciaronsmith4995 Within the paddock Kimi was not rated higher than Alonso after 2004, Kimi's season was quite disappointing... after 2003 he was, his performance was superb. After 2005 there's no discussion, every single squad was trying to seduce Fernando, and he could sign a blank check almost anywhere. Autosport awards... let me laugh, perhaps you don't know but there are so many politics in there. Vettel won it in 2010-2012, Juan Pablo in 2003...
      Trulli beating Alonso? You have to be kidding.
      Kimi lost championships because of reliability? Well, he had the fastest car by far, he couldn't harvest enough points when his car was able to finish races. Too many mistakes, Nurburgring 2005 for example.
      There's only one way to evaluate drivers H2H, and that's when they share the same machine. It was clear for F1 pundits and experts that Alonso had more talent than Kimi, but In 2014 alonso wrote down a full stop.
      P.S. Not only I watched F1 outside of Spanish media, between 1999 and 2006 I was working in one of the F1 garages ;)

    Great video Ciaron! Do you think you may be able to do such a video for Schumi too?
    I think I am going to be wildly controversial now...
    I think the racing that we have got now (2022) is just much better than the one in the 00s. I am not saying today's drivers have better racecraft than Kimi at all, as shown in the video Kimi's racecraft was amazing, he really mastered those cars and he knew both how to be blistering quick but also a superb racer.
    I am just saying that overall the racing is now better because of both the cars and the overall driving.
    My explanation: a lot of people hate the DRS and I agree that sometimes it is just too powerful and makes overtaking too easy, but when it is calibrated right, it just allows the cars to be very close around the lap and invites overtaking and wheel to wheel battles.
    At the same time a lot of people complain about the width of today's cars, and even though it is true that on some tracks this makes overtaking basically impossible (Monaco is the prime example), I feel like in the majority of the tracks they are actually the "right size" to enable good racers to defend their positions. The 00s cars actually look too tiny to allow a good driver to defend against a fast car coming up behind.
    Again, I am aware this may be seen as controversial, but just look back at some of the racing we had this year: the battle for the lead between Charles and Max in Bahrein lasted 3 laps and was just thrilling, with some amazing racing (mostly on Charles part I have to say), then Saudi was incredible, with the leaders following each other in a super high speed track at less than 1second with very similarly paced cars. Some of the action we had in USA was great (Charles on Checo, Seb on Kevin!), we had the five cars battle in Austria, Silverstone was just a stunner with the three best teams battling it out lap after lap and a series of overtakes in basically every part of the track, probably the best laps of racing I have ever seen. In Brasil (especially in the sprint) we also had thrilling racing with defending and mental games between George and Max, Spain was the same, France had amazing action between Carlos and Checo and I could go on.
    I feel like most of the overtakes in the 00s were either due to pitstops or due to one car being MUCH faster than the one in front, and only a very special driver like Kimi could pull something really special out of the bag at times, while today we have many more exciting battles because drivers attack and defend hard and the battles can go on for laps, even between the leaders.

    • @ciaronsmith4995
      @ciaronsmith4995  Год назад +1

      Yes I agree to an extent but the overtakes meant more back then. And I don't think seasons are more exciting now than back then. We had 3 boring seasons - 2001, 2002 and 2004, in that era. We've had much more in this era in my view.

    It pains me seeing this. Honestly ferrari fucked about with him. And ironically he won his only title with them. When i hear all this bs about how he got bored and wanted to leave f1 to do other things i know thats nonsense. All the man wanted was a racing winning car (which he fully merited) and a team that could back him. He wouldve never taken two years out like he did if it wasnt for the way ferrari treated him. Mclaren were complete mugs for hiring jenson button over kimi. One of the most flukish world champions ive ever seen. A man that won races with a double diffuser and then dropped back down to where he belonged when everyone else did the same thing. Wouldve absolutely loved it if he returned there But 14-17 was very painful to watch. It wasnt who he was. Especially after two great years with lotus where he was almost back to his very best
    Im still adamant that ferrari shouldve backed kimi for the title and made seb their no.2 but that was never gonna happen in his last year.
    And 2019 was a real underrated season of kimi with alfa romeo. He had some seriously underrated performances even in qualifying for a 40 yr old. Just showed that he always had pace with right setup and not being "past it" or lacking motivation and committment. Load of rubbish that

      Thanks for the comment - I agree with you on most things. First, about Ferrari - they never understood how to make the car suit Kimi's driving style which was the main issue during his time there as Kimi has said. But I think McLaren wanted Kimi in 2009 and 2013 - they gave him contract offers in both years to drive in 2010 and 2014.. The issue in 2009 was that McLaren were going to pay Kimi less than what Kimi would have earned by sitting out. So Kimi declined - this is the official story. From what I understand Kimi was first choice from the start (Kovalainen said in an interview that McLaren's preference was 1. Kimi 2. Jenson 3. Himself). But I've always said I am not a Ferrari fan. They simultaneously helped Kimi get a title, but also demolished his legacy in certain moments. Obviously he's a legend, but in many ways despite Ferrari, not because of them.

      Thanks for explaining the mclaren situation btw. Maybe i went in hard on them a bit irrationally haha. I was just praying to see kimi back to his best again. I miss his prime so badly.

    Dude I’ve been watching your channel closely in recent weeks, and it’s really good, and some of your opinions are valid and correct. However I must state, your channel is excessively biased in favour of Raikkonen, and as such this questions your credibility and legitimacy. My view is that the correct approach is to follow the evidence, and go where the evidence goes. Any other way is an error. I’ve watched F1 as a mega fan since 1993 and have observed the careers of many of the great drivers during this time. There is no doubt that Raikkonen was very good in terms of raw natural talent, but he was definitely not better than Alonso and Hamilton.

    • @ciaronsmith4995
      @ciaronsmith4995  Год назад +7

      It's not bias it's just my opinion based on empirical evidence. At his peak? Raikkonen was definitely faster than both Hamilton and Alonso in my view. Definitely faster than Alonso in the tyre war - that's not even controversial. There is no bias. I present facts and numerous quotes to support my views (many public F1 figures say the same). Just scroll though the channel. Nothing is done through emotion all through analysis. Cheers. I live in Woking (where McLaren are). Most engineers here I 've met don't disagree with me. Most people make the mistake of using a season like 2008 or 2014/2015 to blanket a 20 year career. Unfortunately, that's not a valid way to judge the pure talent or peak ability of a driver. Cheers - if my life was on the line, I am picking a tyre war Kimi over any version of Lewis or Alonso.

      I would say most of Schumi's prime was in the 90's - but not all of it obviously. 2000 was his greatest season alongside 1997, the 2000 McLaren was easily the best car that year. Regarding Kimi, you're simply wrong. He's arguably the fastest WDC of the 21st century and probably in the top 2 considering his peak. It's either Schumi or Kimi at #1 for me in terms of pure raw ability this century. Button and Rosberg are tiers below a peak Kimi. You've sort of exposed your knowledge (or lack therof) when you make blanket statements like that.

      @@ciaronsmith4995 Even a bigger mistake in Nurburgring? You gotta be kidding. Alonso got hit hardly by Ralf in turn 1 and still managed to recover and showed a great pace in a circuit where the McLaren were clearly faster. He only made a tiny mistake in the hairpin when the race was basically settled. Raikkonen had a clumpsy drive over the 59 laps, he went wide many times and even lost the lead to Heidfeld in lap 30 cuz he left the track! The McLaren was clearly faster and still Kimi's tyre management was poor, we wasted the tyres, locked many many times (even lapping Villeneuve he locked hardly!), didn't manage the gap and didn't take care of the car, and the heavy vibrations that he provocked eventually ruined his race. Even without the crash Alonso was passing him and winning. That race actually showed one of the weakest points of Kimi, in general he had a poor car management during the race and he was not as good and smart as Fernando or Michael dosing the car and controlling and securing races. He only knew how to go 100% every lap.
      In Canada Alonso was very unlucky, he just touched the wall as many cars do in Canada every race weekend, but unfortunately his suspension was gone. Raikkonen was also lucky that Montoya messed it up during the SC and that McLaren favoured him letting him pit first. Juan Pablo was ahead the whole weekend...
      In Hungary, you gotta be kidding again... Alonso lost the wing thanks to the clumpsy drive of Ralf that closed the door heavily in turn 1. It was unfortunate that he lost the wing driving through the kerb precisely in the circuit where overtaking is a huge challenge. Kimi was again lucky that Juan Pablo's car had another reliability issue when he was ahead with good odds to take the victory.

      Because his car was constantly breaking down at McLaren - his second stint at Ferrari is not relevant to the video. He nearly won the title in a 1 year old car in 2003 and won a race in a 2004 McLaren which nobody on the planet could have done. Between 2002-2004, he had 20 DNFS from car failures. Research before you comment. His performance peak in that period was higher than Vettel could ever dream of and higher than Lewis' in my view too. Had his car been reliable, he easily wins the 2003 and 2005 world titles. Easily the world's fastest driver as everyone knew at the time.
