  • PYTHON LEE JACKSON featuring ROD STEWART - IN A BROKEN DREAM
On this date in 1972, IN A BROKEN DREAM by PYTHON LEE JACKSON was resissued and would go on to reach #3 on the UK singles chart in October (Sep 16, 1972)
DJ John Peel had signed this Australian studio group to his Dandelion record label, but they were having problems with the vocals so they drafted in Rod Stewart to sing a guide vocal.
They were so pleased they kept his vocals on the final version.
Although it flopped upon its initial 1970 release, it was re-released two years later after the success of "Maggie May" and became a worldwide hit.
Rod Stewart was paid in an unusual manner for his demo. He recalled to Uncut: "When I did it, I hadn't broken through with 'Maggie May.' I did it for a set of carpets for me car. It was my mate who convinced me to do it. He ran a car showroom, and he said, 'I've got this group come from Australia, but the singer's not very good. Can you do a demo for me?' I said, 'What do I get?' He said, 'Well, I don't have any money. I'll give you a set of carpets.' That was 1969."
The song was written in the 1960s by the group's keyboard player and singer, Dave Bentley.
Issued in October 1970, it did not make the charts. Re-released in 1972 following the rise to stardom by Stewart, the song reached number 56 in the US charts before greater success in the UK later that year.
Stewart re-recorded the song in 1992 with David Gilmour and John Paul Jones but did not release it. The recording was eventually released in 2009 as part of The Rod Stewart Sessions 1971-1998 box set. #rodstewart #pythonleejackson #inabrokendream

My opinion, best version is by the guy who wrote it; David Bentley. Sadly not on RUclips but can listen on Tidal and other music streamers. Check; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_a_Broken_Dream?wprov=sfla1 for history.

I was only 7 years old when this song was released. I wasn't aware of it until several years later, but is it just me or was the 1970s the best decade for popular music in the 20th century? Most music of the 1970s was creative, excellent, exciting and original and since then popular music has never been surpassed. 🎶🎸

It has always been fashionable to claim the "Swinging Sixties" as the greatest decade, but for me the 70s was far superior

Still hits the spot 50 years later. It's still by far my favorite version of the song; the Gilmour version is fine, but the lead guitar on the original here, although not technically very flashy, still punches out better than other versions, with a real ferocity. I'm sure this was on ToTP, probably with Pan's People since there was obviously no band to play in the studio. Wonderful stuff. And the old bleeder is still going strong!

never a massive rod stewart fan, but his voice on this record was superb- think it was an old record from late 60s but was rereleased as a cash in on stewart's newly found fame- classic track

    • @joedover1835

I think it is Slains Castle, near Cruden Bay, not far from Peterhead in NE Scotland.
Brahma Stoker stayed at the Kilmarnock Arms in Cruden Bay, a local hostelry and it's rumoured that Slains was the inspiration he needed to write Dracula.

The first Castle, I don't know. After they took the train North, I think it is Dunnottar Castle, Stonehaven, near Aberdeen.
Not Slains, but could be mixed footage from both..
