This is my first time hearing this artist very impressed reminded me of my wife of 40 years who passed away December 22, 2018 of cancer thank you for helping me remember
My Mom and dad used to play and sing this when I was a kid, and it was so beautifully haunting. The way it sounds played 2 finger on that gourd banjo brings back those goosebumps. Thank you.
Love the slide sounds on that gourd ! Ola Belle is tough act to follow. This I feel is a song where a singer would have to dig deeper than the ocean for sorrow in their heart on this song. I agree, Riley Baugus really delivers sorrow with his version. I think with a little more time you will conquer this tough to sing song.
The way you play is the epitome of bluegrass, dare I say. Such an emotional rollercoaster when you play the standard banjo in F. I don't know why, but bluegrass (and just string instruments in general) give you such a sense of freedom when played correclty. It would be such a tear-jerker if you were to sing this whole song. It's so good, especially when you play it. Have a good day!
Clifton, this is amazing. Been really digging your lessons and your tabs for the patreon supporters. I would absolutely love it if you did a lesson and/or tab on Ola Belles song “I’ve Endured” been trying to find it but not really finding what I’m looking for.
Hey Clifton. Great video. Been using that F tuning for Hills of Mexico and a couple of great Chris Cool tunes. You have now unlocked Undone in Sorrow for me in that tuning, THANKS! Also want to say, that although its hard to beat the original Ola Bell and Riley's superb renditions, you OWN the two finger G version on your new gourd! Really excellent and uniquely yours. PS. That 'tash is killing me. With the hair do, I reckon your now channelling straight from the 1920;s. Old time music with matching hair style. Love it!
I learned this song a few months ago and have been playing it at jams around here (Coastal NC) it's been a hit, and I'm surprised so few people have heard of it. I play it in G and E minor. Great job, as usual.
no finger picks that's super sicks, just like guy named ricks, bare finger on the string to feel the tips-JH19 aka mougley love playing banjo all these songs no finger picks also. need to do "It's Raining here this Morning-The stanley Bros." would be pretty sweet to see a video. Cheers Clifton Hicks for this video gold ima study up.
Thank you so much! Great to find out about this cool tuning. It's like the modal tuning, but with the 5th tuned down a step. It's cool how the chords lay out so easily. I've heard a bunch of songs played in it, and I love them all.
How do you think that she got that quick finger roll sound that she used in High On A Mountain? Did she use the double shuffle or what? I’ve been perplexed by this for a while now.
Clifton, beautifully done as usual! I am really digging fDGCD tuning, the chord voicings are wonderful - that other chord (that looks like the 1st position Em chord in G) is the V chord in that tuning.
Living in India where I think no one or no music shop sells banjo, I planned on making one for myself. But, I am very limited on supplies. Please suggest the easiest way to make a banjo.
Mr Hicks. I'd agree that u are beginning to channel... but on that point of dead end tension bolts I would differ. I've reserected a Washburn bout 0'10 n it's the same, n also this beauty wurlitser badged Vega say ' 20 n it's dead end tension nuts too. Btw, I'm clawhammer born but u is a good teacher n I hope to learn that 2 finger style u so well explain n Thanku verry much
Hi Clifton the gourd sounds great it's inspired me to make my first Banjo ...do you use nylon strings? Or standard steel? Looking for this great sound thanks again
Hey Clifton, I stumbled upon a video on RUclips of Hedy West playing Little Sadie on Pete Seeger's Rainbow Quest. She is playing in a most curious style - could you maybe do a video on how it works? I think it would be really interesting!
I think you'll be able to sing it just fine once you can really get into seeing and feeling the story of it. Lots of fun hearing these different versions.
Idk if it's just the mustache.. but in this video your speaking voice occasionally sounds strikingly similar to Nick Offerman. I was wondering if you maybe grew up in the same area but I don't think so. He's from Illinois
Thanks!

I am deeply sorry for your loss brother. God is taking care of her wherever she is. Love is eternal. You are very strong.
I must say as a retired Nashville full time musician you sir are a breath of fresh.
I second that. Very real and non-commercial.
I love your music, superb voice. I'm slowly going deaf. So I listen to your music. Thank you cliff
MAN THAT THING SOUNDS BADASS. AND U PROBALY MADE IT OUT THE GARDEN. AWESOME.
Thanks. We did grow that little gourd.
MAN ITS GOT FULL SOUND. UNBELIEVEABLE. AT TIMES IT SCREAMS.. REALLY LIKE IT WOW.
"I've been having a hell of a time actually singing this song."
Damn Clif, the first thing I thought was that your vocals on this are over the top.
My Mom and dad used to play and sing this when I was a kid, and it was so beautifully haunting. The way it sounds played 2 finger on that gourd banjo brings back those goosebumps. Thank you.
The range you employ in a single song with your voice is so unique and great. It's as if you're singing a type of stoicism into existence.
Love that your a frettless banjo player too Clifton. Along with myself I know only one other player In East Texas. It is a truly dying art.
It is cool to see you use two banjos for a song. Good perspective. Thanks.
....wow, das hört sich sehr gut an!🙂👍🎸Und Deine Stimme🎤 gefällt mir auch gut. 🙂👍👍👍👍👍Greetings from germany !!!!!
My favorite version of the song,
The fDGCD tuning is also called Cumberland tuning, I believe. I love way the chords are voiced, the V chord in particular.
Please keep trying ... you were born for this song. I'M AWED!
I really love that old sound coming from that gourd banjo. It sounds so timeless, like a tape that's been recorded over. Really amazing Clifton.
Great music ! Great banjo very nice sound ! great singing ! thanks

Thanks, Cliff! I've been working in this one for a while, and find your version makes it easier to pick out the melody!
Best.
Clifton I love the way you do that song. Its really beautiful!
For me, your G-tuning arrangement beats the hell out of the other one. Magnificent!

Great content! A record of this is really needed. You are doing important work. Thanks again.
Such a beautiful rendition, thank you for uploading ❤
Hey Clifton, could you make a close up video of this some time? I'm trying to learn the fDGCD version. Your hills of Mexico close up was really great.

About time someone posted a tutorial on this song! That was great, Clifton, absolutely fantastic job
Clifton, have you made a video performance on YT of this song? I can only find two tutorial videos of it. Love the sound of the gourd banjo.
One of my favorite tunes. Very well done.
Do the whole song someday? I make play lists and listen while delivering mail in concrete and brick Philadelphia. Thanks

That was made in the 1980s by a guy in Berea, Kentucky.
