I honestly just unsubscribed and stopped clicking on things that made me want to buy more. I follow almost exclusively people who are also not into over consumption and it’s been a game changer, I don’t struggle week to week anymore, put more money towards my debt and can afford to live on my own even though I don’t make any more money than before.
Loved these tips! Since the beginning of the year, I stopped browsing and stopped watching style bloggers/videos and it really helped remove the temptation altogether. It really makes a huge difference
Yes I only watch one if I’m looking for something I really need, like I lost weight and needed new jeans, and we just moved to the U.K. So I knew none of the brands and researched, found the perfect pair.
It comes a moment in which you realize that being is much more important than possessing. Austerity and simplicity make you focus on what's really important for your life. Minimalism makes you save money, allows you to live more simply and clearly. You become a more selective buyer and value quality over quantity, and focus on what you really need.
I just finished "No Buy July", lol. I was thinking that it would be pointless to jump right back into spending and accumulating again. Thanks for the tips!
I too use a limit based budgeting system for each of my spending categories. I have the limits taken out of my budget every month so it’s part of my long term financial plan. I treat it like a game. If I don’t spend the entire limit, I take that “extra” money and put it in a separate account at the end of the month. I can use the money in the separate account to buy something I have been eyeing for a while or pay extra on my student loans. It’s a win-win since I have already budgeted for that money to be gone! I also give myself some grace if I over spend in a category. I have some conditional formatting set up to signal when that happens so I can see it month to month and learn from my habits. Since setting up this system, I have only overspent in a category by a couple of dollars! I ALWAYS defer to my spreadsheet before I make any purchase.
A few strategies I have found helpful. I know if I wake up and look at social media and seeing something I like, I immediately want to purchase it. I do find when I go into the office and therefore can’t purchase the item immediately, I have often forgotten about it by the time I get home, or I am more critical about why I want it. Getting out of that “ surge “ of urgency to have the item is crucial for me. Another important point is knowing my style. I am learning to admire beautiful things, and not have to have them if they are not my style… easier said than done
Great video! You’re 1st tip was such an insight. Previously when I didn’t want to shop I just wouldn’t go into stores or the mall but during The pandemic almost all my shopping has been online. It has become too easy to click and have something you wanted show up at your door the next day. Now that we have a little more freedom I have made the effort to actually go into a store and purchase that item in person because I would rather support a small local business than the one click wonder but I definitely have to stop the browsing🤔
when I am evaluating a purchase, I like to see what I already have either of that item or something close to it. Often I realize, holy cow you already have 10 of those... :) and that will help me either decide to gift some of what I have or not buy at all. It's a work in progress!!
Spelling it out really helps. I'm planning a birthday (80th) party for my mom. I wanted a $72 cake and realized I can make it for way less. Might not be as pretty but we can always call it rustic! I'm worthy!
Totally agree to this again after last year every penny was accountable. I am lucky now to have to ladies who sell me nearly new clothes for very little as I have gone up a size so I selective buy more classic items for little money rather than spending in shops online things that are fast fashion. Once you start decluttering regularly you realise you have alot you don't wear so the element of do I really need it x
I have a simple list of things I want to buy on my notes app. I’ve noticed that my spending habits can be very influenced by trends especially in home goods and wellness. So, I never take things off the list I just cross out things that I either didn’t by after a certain amount of time passed (and I realized I didn’t want that it) and when I do buy items that I regret, I’ll keep it on the list and cross it out with a little 💔 next to it to remember. It’s honestly amazing (and slightly embarrassing) how many times I’ve thought about purchasing something only to look on my list and see it already written and crossed out.
OMG I do the same thing! If I am happy with the purchase I give it a green tick ✅ and it I don’t get it I put a huge red cross ❌ next to it so I can see how many times I decided I don’t want to buy the item anymore. The list I made in 2020 seems almost funny to me now because I don’t want any of those things now!
These are really helpful tips. As someone who has done a year-long shopping ban in the past, I still struggle to find the right balance for real life. I like the idea of a “browsing ban” and limits.
This is my first low buy challenge and it has been really great actually to make me pause and think about what is urgent or how much abundance I already have. The only thing I purchased was a yoga mat so I could start a weekly practice again.
Omg you called me out on the Chelsea boots! 😅 I'm about to get them tomorrow from offer up and it's half off the regular price which is why I'm planning on getting it! I don't own any boots and live in the Pacific north west so it's something I'll use for sure! But I've spent over a month not purchasing anything I don't need besides bills and groceries, so it feels like I'm betraying myself with my low buy. Anywho, if I don't like how they feel when I test them, then I won't get them!! I'll keep you posted on how this all goes!
*To all the dreamers out there, don't ever let the world's negativity disenchant you or your spirit. If you surround yourself with love and right people, ANYTHING is possible.* 🙏🖤
Another thing I find myself doing is justifying spending on things like take out coffee from Starbucks by saying “if I don’t use the points in the app they’ll be wasted” but all I’m really wasting is my money.
Thanks for posting relatable content, so many good points! We all have similar. I like how you mention abstaining from browsing or SM, things more upstream than shopping. Fashion and beauty bring much joy and also burden, sometimes I spend too much time and energy trying to decide what to buy, then if I want to buy/return/exchange something, and later if I want to consign or sell on my own, sigh..
OMG!!! Get out of my head. My "No Buy July" was a complete fail. I was so excited and motivated July 1st but by mid-July the Amazon boxes that showed up at my door was ridiculous. It was very deflating. Now...here I am August 1st trying to figure out how to make this month better.
I think slow and steady! ❤️❤️ setting a limit or timeline to buy something really helps me long term. It feels less restricting and less like I’ll want to rebel against myself
Such a great video! I have tried no buys before (and failed quickly), but I like the idea of allowing yourself to buy a certain number of items/set a spending limit!
Great verb - AGONIZING over a thing - this is what I've been doing all this time. Compulsive shopping is a sickness for me, I hope I will recover, your videos help to pull myself together ❤️
Isn't it great when sustainability and productive personal finance habits mix?! Its always great when something benefits both you and the environment! Great video! 🌍
I track everything! But I am impressed with YOUR spreadsheet💥 it adds the mindful intention of the money allocation. It’s a proactive game plan vs. score keeping after the fact. 👍🏻👌🏻
Well, the simplest way to buy less is not to have the money to do it :) (my case ha,ha). That being said, I understand that when you have enough money it's very hard to abstain yourself from unnecessary shopping (my mum)! :) This period where I had less money made me understand the true meaning of less shopping, and I am sure that even when I will have money, I won't be as tempted to spend as I was, because now I know how it feels to leave with not enough money!
Hi Christina, your videos are actually so helpful and interesting. I really appreciate how much thought and effort goes into each and every one of them 🥰
Great tips, great video as always. I think it also helps to figure out if you are a ‘moderator’ or an ‘abstainer’ as people tend to fall into one of these camps so that’s definitely worth factoring in before deciding on a no buy or low buy. There’s interesting tips and ideas on this know yourself better stuff in books by Gretchen Rubin that might be worth a look if anyone is interested. Her book on the 4 tendancies is great for habit change ideas x
Please share your tips that helped you turn a low buy challenge into a low buy lifestyle! 🥰
Thanks to you I started using YNAB again :) it hasn’t helped me with a low buy but I’m tracking and seeing why I want/need to do a low buy. :D
I honestly just unsubscribed and stopped clicking on things that made me want to buy more. I think the advice to unsubscribe and stop scrolling is amongst the best you’ve ever given, and there’s some competition for that title! 👏👏🙏❤️
BROWSING BAN- PERFECT IDEA
Shopping often starts with browsing!
I just finished "No Buy July", lol. I was thinking that it would be pointless to jump right back into spending and accumulating again. Thanks for the tips!
Be kind is the best habit for me 💕 It is when I beat myself up about what I spend that I spend more, because that is the idea I created about myself.
SO true! No need for any additional scolding or guilt to perpetuate any cycle
It’s easier to not buy something you don’t know exists….. 😂 so good. I’m really enjoying your videos at the moment. Keep up the good work 🤩
I relate to you in. every. way. Thank you for being so candid. I’m sure it resonates with more people than will ever admit it. 💛

I need to do this

I do that sometimes, and scroll looking for a certain item, only to realize that I already have a reasonable substitute.
I save for certain periods when I know I’ll spend or want to spend money-like around Halloween since a lot of my home decor is dark decor!
Spelling it out really helps. I'm planning a birthday (80th) party for my mom. I wanted a $72 cake and realized I can make it for way less. Might not be as pretty but we can always call it rustic! I'm worthy!

Was literally just thinking about rewatching one of your videos for some low buy advice. This video is serendipitous ✨
Yay! ❤️

If I had started doing this when I started a low buy, my list would be hundreds of items long 😅

whole internet world of shopping is much more tempting when you feel bored or unsutisfied with your life

Yes that’s very true! It’s a privilege to have this problem to begin with.
@@Christinamychas Indeed! Better time will come (for me) I am sure! I need to practise patience nowadays :)
