Hi, I'm Christina - I'm a blogger slash vlogger slash human on the internet slash pharmacist, hence the "apothecary" theme in my name. I'm living in Toronto, Canada and on my channel you'll find me on my journey towards minimalism, being content with less, my debt free journey, and content on my LOW BUY. I also focus a lot of fashion. I think anyone can curate a personal style we can be confident in, using pieces from out own closet or with carefully thought out new pieces. I'm happy to take any requests, too! Your girl is flexible (not physically). Feel free to leave me a comment below - I always make sure to read and respond, and I love chatting with you guys. Thank you SO much for watching and taking the time out of your day to support my teeny little channel. Love xx, Christina.

I don't mean to hate on anyone but it's so refreshing to see financial advice from someone who is actually struggling with money (or has struggled with money) and not some youtuber living in a mansion, who spends $500 to get their hair done every month and then they're like: 'the dummest purchase I've made was a $2000 dollar designer bag, I could have gotten it for $1800 with my code which is linked below' . that just drives me crazy... great video btw!

stupid logic, sorry. Learning from a person who made it by himself rather than a person who is struggling is obvious. The first one can say that he'd been doing this and got these results.

I realize so much of my overspending comes from being poor as a child. I grew up in the 80s and you were basically a nobody without guess jeans and hi-top Reebok's. I am not wealthy now but if I want something, I can usually get it. However, I find myself overcompensating for the kid who could never keep up with the labels. Thank you for your video. Very inspiring.

I had to learn that no matter how much I bought, I would never have enough. That no matter how much I got, by my next pay check I’d have a list of things that were ‘this is it, after this I’ll have everything and I’ll be happy’ but it never ends. I took stock of the advertising I was exposing myself to via Instagram and RUclips and stopped following people who made me want to buy things (even though I liked their content) just so I could get ahold of myself.

I now view all my shopping through an environmental lens. All these material items will ultimately wind up in a garbage dump someday. So when I go to buy something, I imagine what that looks like, and almost always I reconsider buying that item. I try to get as much use as possible out of the stuff I already have.

wow, when you talked about how you used to take value in people’s complements about your outfits hit pretty hard. I’m not the standard pretty face, therefore I compensated with outfits and looking expensive so I could feel like I’m on the same level as others. However!!! after this video, I opened excel and now I’m making a budgeting sheet to stop spending so much on clothes

I'm not pretty either. And I know that no clothing can fix it. I'm compensating it with kindness. And since I know that I can't fix it, I don't even try. I walk around in tinkered clothes and only spend in expensive, ugly, but comfortable shoes. A hippo in a fancy dress is still a hippo. But I'm a very nice, clever hippo who can fix electrical stuff and know how to use the sewing maching, helping everyone who isn't able to fix clothing and installation. My very handsome (I would have married him if he was ugly as Quasimodo), very intelligent and successive husband loves me the way I am. He doesn't care that I'm ugly. He doesn't care that much prettier women than me would have like to have him. And my friends love me, too. You can't choose how you look, but you can choose to be a nice person.

I am crying while watching this. I resonated with so much of what you said. Growing up poor and living in a trailer I always wanted to be “successful.” I wanted people to look at me and my outfit and NEVER know where I came from. Everything, from my the way I speak to accessories I wear has all been built on the premise that I need to hide where I am from. It’s really a sickness. I want everyone who sees me to say I am successful. I want everyone to say I’m educated. I want everyone to say I look attractive. Well guess what, along with a huge pile of embarrassing debt, this exhausting quest for perfection is unattainable. There will always be someone with more. And being rich doesn’t make you a better person any way so why have I spent so much time pretending to be one!!!??!!

I am lucky to be able to continue to work as a healthcare provider during the pandemic. My income is pretty stable and my student debt almost completely paid off ($4000 left on OSAP). At the same time, I noticed I’ve been compulsively shopping a lot online maybe out of boredom or the need for some immediate gratification. I’ve been struggling with stress and my mood due to covid-19 and demands at work. This was a nice reminder to stop using shopping and instant gratification for emotional reasons. I need to stop wasting money on things I don’t need because it makes me happy in the moment, but doesn’t solve the issue overall.

And I also was given a large student LOC for a professional program, and seeing that $$$ can change your mindset in an instant!
Lately, I've been focusing on spending my money on quality nutrition, new walking shoes and focusing on my time outdoors or being active rather than focusing on what others think of my outfit, shoes, or handbag!

Problem is, I care about what I wear, even when I’m home alone. I rarely dress up for others if ever. I despise low-quality clothes & stuff and the worst part is that I’m not a fan of sales when it comes to my outfits. On the positive side, I lean towards minimalism, which can help get me out of debt since I buy very little stuff including food. I’m currently a full time college student and work part time in customer service. my parents have always been what most people consider “well-off” but I struggle monthly to make ends meet because they don’t support the path I chose. I chose a major in the arts (english literature and creative writing) but my parents who are both in the medical field have been passive aggressive towards my decision. so I vowed to never ever rely on them for money. so I guess a money lesson I’ve learned is that being able to pay for my tuition is more important than buying those purchases that just give me instant gratification. but the struggle is definitely real.

Thank you for sharing your vulnerabilities around money and emotion. I too have gone through a time when I thought that having great clothes or expensive makeup was going to make me a better person, a more well-like person... but the truth is, the people who matter in life don't care about any of that!

I've learned some of the same lessons you've learned. I'm working on paying off my debt as I type. You're right, no one cares about how you look, what you have, where you live but you. This pandemic has really driven the "minimalist" lifestyle home. I've cleaned out my closet of all the crap, cleared my finances, set up a budget, and am using all of the unnecessary mess I've purchased. They say hindsight is 20/20, well 2020 has taught me all the things I thought I needed, I didn't and I don't. So here's to staying focused on a debt-free journey!!!!

You are on a good path. Taking responsibility for educating yourself about finances so that you can take control and gain confidence for the future is something that I wish everyone was taught. It sure is a lot easier to sell people on getting rid of their responsibilities than it is to embrace them, sadly, even though the latter obviously develops you into a more capable person.

I'm finding that as I get older and closer to my late-20s, I'm not really shopping to "look" a certain way anymore. In university, I'd shop at h&m a lot and buy a lot of low-quality pieces because it made me look preppy and business casual because I wanted to be taken seriously (I was a political science major). Now I dress more for comfort, and I invest into staple pieces that aren't super expensive but definitely better quality and fit me better. The last time I bought an expensive shirt from Aritzia was boxing day and I really thought about how often I'd wear it and if it justified the price tag (it did!)

For me the biggest lesson was saving. Even just very little per mont. But it gives a thrill to see your savings grow and you kind of start thinking more like "wait if I buy that my savings this mont will be less than usual" and I stopped buying a lot of the useless things I used to "reward myself with". Funny enough I realized I low-key love not spending 😀

I'm doing pretty ok with money. Nevertheless, there is space for improvement.
I write lists - to a point that people are making fun of me.
I have one with all my clothing purchases of the year from that one online store I buy my clothes from (including shoes). This way I see what I purchased, its price and when. I also marked my mispurchases to see where I wasted my money (so far it's 50,83 € that I threw out). I can compare my spendings from the previous years and if I need to change things. I didn't know that my spending at this online shop was atrocious in 2018, if I didn't do the math this year. I thought it was pretty much the same like the years before. Numbers are maybe a good thing to see sometimes and not just a picture of all of your stuff. Who the hell needs 15 jackets/outerwear?! It looked like 5 to me - and I just wear the 2 same jackets.
I'm also selling my stuff and I write it all down - including the weight - just to see how much stuff I had and the work I have to put into selling and carrying it to the post office. Maybe this has a better effect on my spending habits when I see how time consuming it is to get rid of the stuff.

My list reminds we why some things are mispurchases.

Great video but its not great you have to go through life like that. I was in the same position too but learned to manage money to work for me. Here's what I have learned:
    1. Fashion is always the same
    2. Be your own friend_ always have money for that friend in you.
    3. Your needs are more important so handling money should go towards housing, food and clothing ( if you really need clothes not the particular style.
    4. Take care of your mind, body and soul.
    5. True friends respect your need to be your own boss with money.
    6. Education is important but applied knowledge is even greater.
Those are the things I have learned but I still do have some debt. I use my credit card but at 30% usage and managed to have investments and savings. But I must say the content of your video is eye opening with such grace, kindness and intelligently done. I wish you all the best!

The thing with that is that my love for clothes is still the same, but now I enjoy my clothes simply for my own pleasure and creating a positive emotion for myself. So liberating! And budgeting- OMG I was on 7 GBP per day for almost a year! but it worked and now, even though I've lost my work for this year due to COVID, I haven't been in debt since (also cut up my cc's)... Thanks for sharing your inventory sheet- you're wonderful! Keep up the good work :) Best, Gabby xx

Thank you for your commentary, for part of your story. Your insight seems so obvious, so common sense, but the forces that influence us to the contrary are pervasive and persuasive. Because of our culture, it is a great challenge for so many of us to live below our means. It shouldn't be, but it clearly is.
One sort of mental exercise that helps me to be prudent with spending is to reflect and remember when I was much younger (teens and twenties) - when I was so excited/obsessed to buy _____. I dreamed, I saved, I waited and was finally able to buy _____(!). Now, with time and some maturity I think about that that _____, and I understand that what I just "had" to have back then was imprudent and silly. Forward a few years, and I can still able to apply that things I had to have and bought just a few years ago. I look around my place and...it's just stuff, and I want to get rid of a lot of it. Now, bring that thinking forward to the present moment, and it helps me to be wise about on what I spend my money.
Best wishes to you in your endeavor to get out of debt. I am confident you will make it. The resolve in your voice and in your eyes shows hard lessons well learned, even if from financial-emotional pain (sometimes pain can be a great teacher).

Biggest mistake I made was getting into a habit of shopping to fill time and out of boredom. I need a low cost hobby.

Can you show what you eat in a week and do for exercise? What’s your typical exercise routine and diet like? How do you stay in shape?

The time part is so true I got my student loans within minutes. But the amount of time it took to pay them off felt like forever. I wanted to pay it all off by 30 and I paid it all off by 29 and became debt free. It was hard but worth it.

Great honest video. Like you I’ve learnt that you have to ‘do the math’ but my weakness was Christmas. Every year I carried debt for half the year. I’ve learnt that you don’t need to give presents you can’t afford. Also that I don’t need the best skincare but just a bit of skincare!!
