This is absolutely amazing - and I have not experienced anything like Steven Isserlis ... playing with an ease as if he doesn't even play, but rather listens - with every sign of pleasure - to a concert with a cello player called Steven Isserlis telling all kinds of magic tales with his instrument. Thank you so much for this performance ...!!!!
Had me thinking…How fortunate we are to live in a world where such creativity exists. Then to have these precious few, with the intellect, talent, and willingness to commit their lives to creating music at this level for the rest of us to enjoy. Thank you and bless you all from the bottom of my heart.
I've come back to this concert so many times. Beautiful and intimate, I never get tired of this performance. Thank you for sharing your joy of music with us!!
@@guileshillInterestingly, the manuscript score only has one cello line with tutti and solo markings, rather than a cello section line and solo cello line. In fact, the tutti sections are included in most editions because of that - and many musicologists believe Joseph Weigl, to whom this concerto was dedicated, was the only cellist in the Esterhazy orchestra at the time, and would have played the tutti AND solo sections by himself!
Wow! A genius ‘cellist showing that anything, and everything, is possible while seemingly appearing to be on the edge of madness at times! What a joyous, breathtaking, audacious and poignantly tender, risk-taking journey throughout this well known and loved cello concerto. I enjoyed his also seemingly spontaneous and inspired-by-the-moment ornamentations and humour, along the way, and his amazing bow choreography.
Haydn: 1 Cello Konzert C-Dur . hr - Sinfonieorchester. Steven Isserlis . Richard Egarr I enjoyed cello concert 2. I actually am enjoying this much better. Steven certainly is the King 🤴 of the Cello and its a delight to listen to this piece. What a talented Cellist and the orchestra too is so complimenting him with their accompaniment. Anyone can see he lives to bring great music to his audiences. Enjoyably so, too. Thank You for giving me the opportunity of listening to this wonderful music. The experience was delightfully received. Perfection …. In my opinion.
An old soul with so much youthful energy, personality, and playfulness! And a beautiful, fine cello to top it off. Just discovered my new favorite cellist :)
Best performance of this piece on YT. Sound quality also fantastic. I believe I heard this on the radio and was bowled over, and even without the picture you tell the absolute joy and exuberance Isserlis puts into it. Seeing the full performance is a real treat.
I love his reaction to that disturbing noise in 23:47 and how he joyfully integrates it as a stepping stone to lift the music to another level. This music is about joy. Also technique, but mostly joy.
Einfach wundervoll!
What an absolute joy this is, both to hear and to see [apart from the masks]. Wonderful music performed with brilliance, sensitivity and exuberance. My favourite recording of Haydn's Cello Concerto in C by far.
Nice to see that Egarr has included the harpsichord in the basso continuo of this concerto, however, they should have also included at least one bassoon to add a woodwind-bass color to the other winds. Josef Haydn is on record in 1768 as having advocated for the tradition of including the bassoon in the basso continuo having said this: "The bassoon can be omitted if absolutely necessary, but I would rather have it, especially since the bass is obbligato throughout. And I prefer a band with three bass instruments - cello, bassoon and double bass - to one with six double basses and three cellos, because [in the latter scoring] certain passages cannot be heard clearly.“ Basically, if the orchestra includes wind instruments and basso continuo, one should include bassoon too. That was common practice, and the sound of oboes and horns without a wood-wind bass instrument is just odd and uncharacteristic of that period. (This is particularly odd since the same conductor and orchestra include the bassoon in their next video with the 2nd Haydn concerto, but have omitted it here.)
superbe!
Just prior to listening to Isserlis play this piece,....I listened to Rostropovich play this also,....and Isserlis ain't taking a back seat to the master at all,......Bravissimo sir.
Great playing by all as always! Does anyone know why the soloist is playing cello tutti at the beginning of this performance? In most performances, the soloist only comes in when the solo begins. Any ideas?
Actually, a bit unusually, there’s only one cello line in the score, marked tutti and solo in different places, rather than a cello section line and a solo cello line. The tutti part is included in most editions now, and many musicologists believe Joseph Weigl, to whom this was dedicated, was the only cellist in the Esterhazy orchestra at the time, and thus would’ve played the tutti AND solo sections by himself
I think this is probably the most relaxed looking performance of this I’ve seen.

Einfach unglaublich!!!! So frisch, so anders, so glänzend und freudig -
wie der Haydn selber!
Bin sehr überrascht - wow!!!
Absolut grandios!!!❤

imo this recording is wayyyy better than the Mischa Maisky one, steven just understands it so much better.
I love that he plays the opening cello part, versus be serenaded and invited to play along.
I guess his line might be something like, "It's called a Tutti, that means everyone, that means I can join in... so there!"

You cannot play this concerto with only one cello - the soloist.
Herrlich.
I love the way how he used his bow, it is a wonderful interpretation of the piece.
I so agree. ‘Bow choreography’, I call it. Beyond the strings and the left hand, it’s mostly the usage of the bow that gives a cello its voice.

I love the passion here. And I’ve always loved Richard from NBS.

Bravo! Wonderful performance. Steven is my hero and inspiration on the cello, the orchestra are on top form too, in all a wonderful performance.
I love his reaction to that disturbing noise in 23:47 and how he joyfully integrates it as a stepping stone to lift the music to another level. This music is about joy. Also technique, but mostly joy.
Amazing indeed, great to point that out!
Haha I didn't even realize! I thought it was part of the movement XD
I thought it was some kind of weird bow scrape. It worked, though!
Beautiful performance by the soloist and orchestra too ! Thank you very much for bringing such emotions…
Oh to be caressed as is Steven's cello ; the touch, the quiver ............ !
Music is so natural for him, it's amazing to experience. Excellent orchestra too

This is incredibly amazing! If the bassoon were present, it would be perfect. Isserlis plays like a wizard producing beautiful magic.
Thank you for Haydn again!
Magnificent! Brilliant playing by an incredible soloist together with sensitive accompaniment by one of my favourite orchestras. Thank you. Dankeschön
Amazing Cellist, Amazing Conductor, Amazing Orchestra. So happy to hear my favorite cello concerto in this fantastic performance. Thank you.
this is by far the best performance i`ve sean/heard of this concerto...absolutely masterfull

Effortless joy. Awe-inspiring mastery
Great performance! Isserlis is so much fun to watch - he plays with such joy which I see spread to the orchestra, too! Wish I could have been there!
Profoundly beautiful.
Thank you so much for uploading this performance. I cannot thank you enough for this!
So good! Too good, too good to be true, but it is true. Full of joy, my favourite version of this piece. Thank you so much 💐

rich, moving, sensitive -a brilliant performance
I really love his interpretation on this piece! Bravoo! 👏👏👏💖💖💕💕
He’s crazy I love him
Found about this concerto by attending a real concert of Isserlis. Was so great to hear him play this piece.
Absolutely the best cellist our time!
The best cellist of all times!
One Word: the MUSIC!!!!!
Que alegria ouvir essa interpretação!
What a wonderful performance, again. Hard to tell if they were allowed an audience, but does not seem to have affected the quality of the concert.
Breathtaking....
Fantastic!
The two Haydn cello concerts posted in less than 24 hours, it's like an anticipated Christmas

Exciting Hayden cello
Very nice performance of Schum...ehy, wait a moment! It's Haydn's cello concerto
That fellow's great with the cello.
11:10 II, cello enters
19:35 III, cello enters
This is a very good performance, I prefer it to Bruno Philippe's performance 4 years ago. Thank you very much.
Incomparable.

QUÉ MARAVILLA.

Sublimissime !
Absolutely wonderful performance! Unfortunately, the performance hall looks almost empty.
Sublime

Great playing by all as always! Does anyone know why the soloist is playing cello tutti at the beginning of this performance? In most performances, the soloist only comes in when the solo begins. Any ideas?
In fact, I noticed this now not only in the introduction, he often joins in during the tutti sections whenever he can.
I guess his line might be something like, "It's called a Tutti, that means everyone, that means I can join in... so there!"
It's in the original score by Haydn.
This is a carry -over from the baroque tradition and was common at the time. It also allows the soloist to warm up.
Actually, a bit unusually, there’s only one cello line in the score, marked tutti and solo in different places, rather than a cello section line and a solo cello line. It’s like his face is amused by what some else, very talented, is doing with his body.
❤❤❤
most concentrate person on the planet 9:01 the guy in background
Does anyone know which cello he is playing in the performance?
Stradivarius ( Marquis de Corberon ) with gut strings on it.
This man haven't limits on cello.
Besides the impressive performance, the cellist reminds of Anthony Bourdain.
