Bose S1 Pro vs JBL Eon Compact - Outdoor Sound Test

  • I setup a pair of Bose S1 Pro's and a pair of JBL Eon Compact's for an outdoor sound test with surprising results!!
    Each pair of speakers were setup on stands roughly 25'-0" apart. The camera (with stereo microphone) was centered on the speakers roughly 45'-0" away. Each speaker is roughly 51.5 feet away from the camera (using my old trusty geometry skills!).
    I was using the On-Stage BC2000 Stereo Bluetooth Receiver with the JBL Eon Compact's because I've been unable to get the on-board Bluetooth to reliably run in stereo mode. Not sure if the batteries weren't fully charged on each Bluetooth receiver, but I had to connect each receiver to each JBL Eon Compact via a 25'-0" XLR cable and place them on the ground next to my phone for reliable playback in stereo! I haven't had this issue before with the On-Stage BC2000's... but that's why you can see cables leading to something on the ground in front of them. The Bose S1 Pro's built-in Bluetooth was pushing it's distance limit, but still performed admirably.
    Another thing to note is that all four speakers were used the previous week for 5 consecutive hours for an outdoor party (not all full volume) and they all had enough remaining power to perform the test. The Bose S1 Pro's indicated approximately 50% power, while the JBL Eon Compact's indicated roughly 35% remaining power.
    Both sets of speakers were as loud as they could go with a small amount of clipping. The Bose S1 Pro's weren't actually "clipping", but there was a small amount of distortion in the low frequencies. I was not comfortable pushing them further without EQ modification.
    It is easy to hear that (per spec), the JBL Eon Compacts handle the lower frequencies better, but the Bose (despite it's smaller speaker size and amp rating) actually did an impressive job! The imaging and clarity are much better on the Bose in my opinion. My next tests will push the Bose S1 Pro's with different portable subs outdoors to see if I can squeeze more volume out of these little guys!!
    The SPL level of the pair of Bose S1 Pro's actually exceeded the SPL level of the JBL's at 45'-0" away, while the SPL level of the JBL Eon Compact's was roughly 3 dB higher 3'-0" away from the speaker. (Actual dB levels are shown at the end of the video)

    Been really struggling to decide between these two systems. Finally went for the Bose, and this video really helped reassure that purchase! They have a great ‘finished’ quality to them.

    Great video! I have found the JBL Compact will clip or flash red on the app before the Bose S1 at the same volume. I don't hear any audible distortion on the JBL but the red light bothers me. Have you experienced this?

      I havent... Primarily because I don't use the app. I set the volume on one input channel and use an external mixer. Then app is very annoying to me. Nowhere near as good as the Evolve 30m's wireless app!

    I like the Bose but bought the JBLs because of 2 things: more bass and the tech on the Bose is old, no mixing on phones or ipads.

      I definitely understand... The Eon Compacts are much more tech savvy than the S1s! They do have more bass too... The S1s really need a Sub to handle an outdoor show... Especially for a DJ...

    I have both. Hands down the JBL sounds better. The tweeter I think just has a better waveform guide. Indoors the JBL you can tell with 8 inch woofer it holds db over distance better I doors. Out doors the mid shines better on the bose but lacks vocal clarity because of it. The mids get boomy which drown out the highs some. But the real picture is when the bose s1 came out it was revolutionary and changed the Industry. The JBL on the other hand (better speaker imo but barely) was a disappointment. It was just marginallying better. JBL also missed an opportunity to make a battery powered sub to pair with this unit. If I kill the frequency at below 150hz this speaker can actually move some volume. The tweeter definitely outclassed the 8 inch midwoofer. When I got my s1 pros it was awesome and when I got my jbl eon one compacts it was really disappointment. 2 plus years and you had the opportunity to murder this speaker with the platform and they dropped the ball. If I had it to do over again I would get the yorkville exm mobile 8 and the mobile sub. 1 of those speakers outclassed 2 of my jbl eon one compacts and my s1 pros. Then throw in the sub it's a pretty powerful battery set up. Now the new jbl eon one mk2 is legit and if you were thinking about getting a pair of either of these speakers one of those would beat a pair of either of these. I still wish JBL would have came out with a battery powered 10 inch sub to pair with these.

      I agree the JBL's have more low end and are bit louder, but in my opinion the Bose just sound better - especially when paired with a Bose Sub 1. I didn't modify the video to make one sound louder than the other, I raised the volume on each set of speakers until they began clipping (light blinking red). I then turned the volume down until the clipping (red) light stopped (to minimize distortion).

    Bose sound comes out evenly but lack of character. JBL has stronger bass, mid range though wattage doesn't afford it's highest level. Both have pros and cons.

    • @bestproaudio4255
      @bestproaudio4255  3 года назад +5

      Both do have pros and cons for sure. I do like the added bass and power from the JBL - I don't like the lack of decent stereo bluetooth or stereo options in general. I'm looking more at using a system for backing tracks. The JBL is best for a street performer who doesn't mind a tablet interface and wants to dial in their sound. The Bose is more of a set it and forget it option - great sound - easy to use. I use in a pair and with a Bose Sub1. Bose is also a modular system for scalability - another pro from my standpoint!
