    this is rarely advised but very effective technique, at least for me. I usually do it laying down on a hard-floor. Interestingly, it can release multiple areas depending on where the muscle movement is initiated, i.e. base of the neck, thoracic etc. Also the starting position of the spine could be already slightly sideways bent or the head could be raised on a pillow and again different areas are mobilized. I have noticed that doing the mobilization with full lungs or empty lungs also have different effect in different cases, so for me both work in a positive way. If the exact location of the problem on spine is known, placing a foam roller underneath (or similar) and doing this exercise usually results in mobilizing exactly that spot.
