USS New Orleans (CL/CA-32) the lead New Orleans-class cruiser in service with the United States US Navy was launched on the 12th of April 1933. New Orleans was undergoing engine repairs at Pearl Harbour during the japanese attack on the 7th December 1941. She would go on to take part in the Battle of Coral Sea, the Battle of Midway followed by the Battle of the Eastern Solomons. During the night time Battle of Tassafaronga in 1942 New Orleans was struck by a torpedo which detonated the ship's forward magazines and gasoline tanks. This explosion severed almost 50m off her bow just forward of turret No. 2. Miraculously New Orleans survived by sailing stern first to Sydney Australia where all the battle damage was repaired. New Orleans returned in 1943 and saw extensive action across the Pacific. The 17 battle stars New Orleans received for her World War II service placed her among the most decorated U.S. naval vessels of World War II.
