On board the USS Zumwalt, the Navy's pricey new battleship

- The U.S. Navy's newest warship, the USS Zumwalt, will be commissioned on Saturday. It's built for stealth and is loaded with advanced technology, but it cost a staggering $4.4 billion. David Martin reports.
"battleship?"
It's not a Battleship. It's a Destroyer. Only Battleships are Battleships. Cruisers are cruisers. Destroyers are Destroyers. Frigates are Frigates.
The general term is "warship."
Mr. Elmore, you've have mistakenly assumed that CBS will do something called "journalism".
No... it is a catastrophy.
what if I said Boat, Big One!
@@lucdevincke2055 It’s pretty good IMO
Is cruiser replaced battleships?
"I'll take 32 please, how much does that cost?".........."Okay I'll just take 3"
They can'
t even get the first one working! But what's important, is that the contractors and investors are making a lot of money!
more like 3 X10^-3000
The AGS projectiles skyrocketed to a million a piece. The Navy cancelled it, so now those two cannons (AGS) up there are useless.
nightlightabcd lol they can if they want to
This is NOT a battleship. It is a destroyer, named after Admiral Elmo Zumwalt. One of the most outstanding CNOs that ever served.
So when the guy was so outstanding why did they give his name to such a bad ship?
@@lucdevincke2055
Did you just call this new ship bad?
The only problem with this ship is the price for every thing. Other wise, this thing is a badass. Farther radar range than the Arleigh Burke, on Radar it shows up as a small fishing boat to its enemies, and the firepower it packs as well
Lol👍👍
I wish we could afford more
@@lucdevincke2055 Did stuff like reforming the navy to ease racial tensions.
dont you mean "pricey new destroyer" cause that is not a battleship
He probably meant battleship as in a war ship and not the use of the ship.
kemboy323 still wrong tho
Linus Lindberg I didn't say he wasn't wrong.
kemboy323 and i didnt say you didnt say he wasnt wrong
Linus Lindberg but you did say he was wrong, but I think he wasn't because he thought he was right but he was technically wrong because he probably thought that a battleship implies a ship that goes to battle rather than the battleship which has a designated purpose (high grade armaments) rather than the name destroyer.
Hold up......captain James Kirk?? Whaaaaaa?!
Spongebob Squarepants there are already 2 enterprises, the CV Enterprise and the USS Enterprise.
Sada fiyer There have only been one Enterprise in commission at a time in the U.S. Navy. USS Enterprise CVN 65 has been decomissioned. So currently there are no commissioned Enterprises.
Gary Hylton Did i say they were in service?
Sada fiyer if you talking about decommissioned ships, there are a few more than two
Gary Hylton HMS Enterprize and that french ship that was named enterprise, those excise too.
US government: Battleships are obsolete and too expensive.
Also US government: 4.4 billion for a Destroyer? Well absolutley
Please, no Star Trek jokes, the captains name was James Kirk for real.
Beautiful ship however.
Could you imagine the cost of trying to make a "stealthy" battleship
it's more efficient than battleship
Uuuhm......where is the railgun? Im thinkin "DLC"!?
In the front it's shielded
Pay more taxes and we'll talk about it.

To those people commenting that it is a destroyer not a battleship, you are correct. However the reason for it being referred to as a battleship is because of the role that it fills (Shore bombardment). This was traditionally the role filled by the fleets battleship compliment. The US Navy is required by law to maintain ships to fill that role, but seeing as a full sized battleship is ridiculous, and traditional naval guns are vastly outclassed by missiles, aircraft, and the railgun weapons currently under development the Navy chose to build a destroyer to fill the role instead of building new battleships. The Zumwalt class was also to replace the current Arleigh Burke class destroyer thereby killing two birds with one stone and saving money overall. But with how congressional appropriations work as well as the massive cost of R&D to make the jump in capabilities that the Zumwalt represents the ship quickly got much more expensive per ship than the navy wanted. This ship really is the bleeding edge when it comes to naval engineering, and as such it is very costly. I would compare this to the seawolf class submarines. They were developed with tech way ahead of their time, and as such the price per vessel was sky high and the production numbers were cut. Then ten years later after the technology had matured, and the fleet gained operational experience with the new tech, they were able to design the Virginia class, which improved upon the design of the seawolf, and drastically reduced the cost per vessel and time required for construction. The same thing is likely to happen to the Zumwalt class. Three will be built, it will get deployed the Navy will learn from the experience, and in ten to twenty years time when the Arleigh Burke class is really showing its age they will design a modified version of the Zumwalt and make about 50 of them much much cheaper than the current models.
It is not a battleship, it is a destroyer

Cool! Just rename the ship Enterprise and replace knots with warp-factor to make the future come a bit sooner! :-)

Henri-Martin Schoonakker yeah it's great, he even said "live long and prosper" during the comissioning

But he's the kind of maverick who likes to go where he isn't suppose to. Also his tendency to play around with local "attraction". I rather be concerned.
Captain James Tiberius Kirk!!!!!!!!!!
Not only is it NOT a battleship, neither is it a”ship of the line.”
Comment percentages:
80% James Kirk???
10% its to expensive
10% it’s ugly and looks like a pyramid
Dont forget the 10% that say its not a battleship
I've been looking for this...I observed this ship while I was running the beach. Thought it was the strangest looking ship I've ever seen. Now I know what it is and what its called. Thanks youtube.
That $4 Billion price tag is not counting the R&D cost. If you include the R&D cost spilt evenly over the 3 ships in the class, the unit price goes to up to $7.5 Billion.
Which is still not really that much considering this is a new class of ships.
Baltazar Vok yes but your talking about purchasing multiple of these that’s at the minimum a dent in the us military’s budget even though they get the most government funding I’m not say that the ship is bad in any way I’m just saying that it’s costs an exorbitant amount of money
It’s a DESTROYER!!!!! My buddy who is assigned on the Zumwalt stated, that the technology and weapons that this ship has is so futuristic it’s almost unbelievable. He won’t say what or how, but says….sleep tight, it’s a ship to be reckoned with. That ship can do things that are only in movies and beyond. ❤❤❤🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸! Yeah yeah yeah…..it’s expensive, but I guarantee the Chinese and Russians don’t have anything close to this. Good Luck sinking it! I sleep better knowing it’s on the water!
its one of the best ships in the navy
It's not even operational. LMFAO!
The Zumwalt currently may be the most powerful and best destroyer in the world.
As stealthy and powerful as this new destroyer is, I think my old destroyer (Vietnam era) was a beautiful looking battle weary craft. Just one sailors opinion that she was a fine looking lady which puts the look of new destroyers to shame.

I know this video is five years old now but watching this vid and reading some of the comments made me realize something. Why isn't the US Navy re-naming these things to Guided Missile Cruisers (CG) and re-starting production with the now-totally-useless front gun turrets replaced with more VLS cells? The Ticos are not only way too old...but they are actively being decommissioned and scrapped as we speak because of their age. And not only are they being scrapped, but a replacement Cruiser program HASN'T EVEN BEEN STARTED YET!!! We are decommissioning and scrapping the Ticos without any replacement available now or in the near future, and the Navy claims that Arleigh-Burkes can't simply take over the mission that the Ticos perform in a Carrier Strike Group. So why not do exactly what I just suggested?
It was all of the cutting-edge tech and the reduction in procurement numbers that drove the price of these things to ridiculous levels and got the program cancelled. But today all of that tech is far more mature than it was when the Zumwalt program started. Moreover, now that we KNOW the front guns are literally useless chunks of wasted steel, they can be removed from the plans and the front of the ship can be redesigned to carry even more VLS cells and a conventional 5" gun in a stealthy mount for protection from small surface vessels. How is this not the perfect solution? Instead of starting a new CG development program from scratch, we are simply re-starting Zumwalt production with a new classification (CGs instead of DDGs) and a new mission set.
One of the reasons why the Arleigh-Burkes supposedly can't take over the Tico's mission is a lack of space onboard the DDGs. Well, as this video shows, the Zumwalts have TONS of room on board. I'm sure I'm not the first person to think of doing this so why hasn't it gotten more traction in Congress and in the Navy? I've never heard of ANY discussions...even tentative ones...to convert the Zumwalts to Cruisers and restart production immediately in order to replace the aging, dilapidated Ticos. It seems like the damn perfect solution to me.
Doing so would not only fix the problem of a lack of Cruisers, but it will totally change the narrative on these things. They would go from overpriced turds with useless guns and no clear mission to the most advanced Guided Missile Cruisers on planet Earth. And because Congress and the Navy has already decided that more Zumwalts will NOT be replacing Arleigh-Burkes moving forward, the next Destroyer (DDG) is going to be designed and built from scratch anyway. So now instead of designing and building both the next gen Destroyers AND the next gen Cruisers from scratch...which would be insanely expensive and extremely risky...we simply re-start Zumwalt production with minor changes to the design to become our next Cruisers and only have to design and build the next DDGs from scratch.
Why do the MSM folks keep calling the Zumwalt a "battleship"??
It's a destroyer...
Its because of her size is too big to be destroyer but she is a stealth battleship or future battleship.
70%: not a battleship, its a destroyer
25%: the captains name is james kirk
5%: actually talking about the ship
Thank the parents of James Kirk for naming him that way, and thank James Kirk for becoming a captain. Now somebody transfer him to the U.S.S. Enterprise!
By the time the next Enterprise (CVN-80) enters service. This Captain Kirk will probably be an Admiral or close to retirement. When is the next Enterprise due to enter service anyway?
i knew a guy who worked on the guns here in kentucky and he said the guns where practically out of this world, he said they do alot more than what they say.
When it tears up, they'll have to wait a month for Chinese parts!🙄
The reason why it cost so much is because this ship is a proof of concept ship so if the navy had gone ahead with the 32 order the costs would go down.
The reasoning I imagine is that if they are really needed in the future then they can be produced relatively cheap compared to the development cost. The problem is that in that time all China has to do is hack a server and build their own.
It's not simply asking a server that would just get them the plans.
Why would the Chinese want to build a ship that is the laughing stock of the whole world?
does anyone else find it funny that the captains name is james kirk
That's kinda creepy..look what happened to first enterprise..
I heard of James Kirk long before he became a Capt.
Yes there is a Capt. James Kirk
There was also a BrigGen Jimmy Stewart. Yes the same as the movie star.
4 billion? That's nothing, the F-35 program cost 1 trillion dollars and the proposed Seattle mass transit system is estimated to cost 48 billion.
You're talking about the program cost for the F-35, we're talking about cost per unit right now, The unit cost of an F-35 is like 150 million I believe, while the average unit cost of the Zumwalt-Class of ship is 7.5 billion per unit, that IS a lot of money.
Thanks for the correction.
fassenkugel What does that have to do with the above conversation?
fassenkugel I don't understand whatever it is that you're typing, friend.
but they had investors from other country not only us for the f35 program
Good to see ya finally catching up with the Royal Navy
Shaggy2222 catching up? The US has been ahead of the Royal Navy as far as I know.
Many countries have developed Stealth destroyers I think is what he is getting at. I saw one in the south of Sweden when I was 12 or something (8 years ago).
"News just in. High tech Swedish stealth ship detected by ordinary 12 yearold. The Swedish navy will be conducting a formal investigation of how their stealth efforts have been countered so easily. Experts fear that rival nations already possess numerous 12 yearolds of their own, marking a critical flaw in the ships design."
( In seriousness though, yeah. The US has been a little behind in fielding practical stealth ships. They may well have set the bar again now though.)
UnknownSquid Hahaha well not to brag but I was no ordinary 12 year old :>
This ship has a shape simular to the Iron Clads of the Civil War.
Batman's response: "Does it come in black?"
That is not a battleship sir
At least the ship is commanded by Captain James Kirk.

Nice light frigate! Very nice
They're calling this thing a Battleship?! At most it's a light cruiser due to those 6in guns! Yet it's classified as a guided missile destroyer... God... These people REALLY need to get their act together...
I don't know why it doesn't have those two extra 30mm guns at the rear it was supposed to have. All it needs are those, a CIWS and a SPY radar capable of providing area defense. Considering that's all it needs, and some more reliability, I can't understand why it's being cancelled. Such a beautiful ship!
0:48 THERE TWO OF DEM
Seeing this beauty made little 12 year old me want to join the navy
Guys it’s not really a missile destroyer, it’s a rail gun based gun, the hidden turrets are railguns

Since the contract with Ferrari for ammo has now been cancelled, and the Rail Gun is going to be operational about the same time as the Moller Skycar, the latest proposal is to bolt six M-1 Abrams MBT's to the deck. Manned by Marines of course.
Why not. When you just can spend borrowed money without having to think about paying the money back, you can just as well spend billions on something no one really needs. Another argument why the rest of the world should stop spending dollars to trade. Then the USA will realize the true value of money.
inb4 its a destroyer, not a battleship
nvm, Im WAY late
That is a destroyer
It would be kinda funny if it ran a ground right after leaving port
As a mainer I'm proud to say this ship built right in Bath Maine. The best built is bath built
they will probably add rail guns later wouldn't be surprised if these things are called battleships one day also they will probably build more down the line
They should've just built more arleigh burkes
Because 51 of those isn't enough.
Ships evolve.
62 in service*, 76 planned (so far) more will be added
i work where thease ships are built very impressive and rail guns will be added later on the ship has enough power to to power a small city (78 megawatts)
It’s not built to be pretty. It’s built for task and purpose. All weap systems are designed to spec. modular.

Bring back the Iowa and screw the Zumwalt
Iowa in the 21st century would be a huge floating target for guided missile.
The only utility for a battleship would be to use his battery to destroy objectives on the ground except that this missions can be done by fighter jet and cruise missile at a fraction of the cost of maintaining a huge ship like the Iowa and without his limited range.
So yeah battleship are useless nowaday and this is no surprise that no one is using them.
JakeTheGamer657 according to sources, the zumwalt was made to replace the Iowa-Class
4 B a piece , wow! Nice to have a ship building company.
aaaand no shells will be ordered for the main gun. Brilliant. A 4 billion dollar barge.
Now they tell us that the shells cost $800,000 each.
Did we finally get some shells for its two guns?
Why do we need a ship with a 4 billion dollar price tag? Does it really add that much value to our existing fleet?
Yes.

are you even american?
Like Carsten Diesterbeck said, its a first of its class ship that needed a lot of expensive R&D to make so naturally its the most expensive ship but when they make the next one the price should drop compared to the first one. Also its a test bed for whether having stealth actually would work but also for the future of railgun technology which means it needed to house a lot of electrical power to be able to use the railgun which is more likely the cause for the price compared to the fact its stealthy.
They aren't finished yet, once the railgun is mounted then it will definitely be worth it. I don't know if the laser system will be mounted on these ships but if they are then that coupled with the railgun will make these essentially untouchable while being able to reach out and strike any target.
That is a gorgeous ship a beautiful piece of American armament. A show of force to China and Russia and our technology and superiority.
