Oh Jane what an emotional video, you are so brave to sit in front of the camera at this very hard time in your life. Thank you so much for all your advise and your honesty. Although I am not in your position of having lost my job I know where you are coming from. When I was widowed which happened suddenly I had to quickly had to learn to manage on one income after being very comfortable financially on two good incomes.

Two pieces of advice: do things which cost money less frequently (I now only do a clothes wash every 10 days or so; I only shop every 10 days - both of these rather than once a week); secondly, each month plan a treat ( it need not cost much - going to a different town for the day ( taking your own food); going for a walk that you have not done before; borrowing a new board game from friends; fish and chips sitting on a local harbour or in a park for example). Both of these help your mental health - which important in these times. Brilliant video, Jane. I think that it a situation that more folks will be facing here in the UK soon 🤔

I suffered a sudden loss 6 months ago. Shortly after, I found and subscribed to your channel. I would like to give you a big thank you for all your amazing content, all of which has helped me through this challenging time in my life. You are an excellent teacher! From my experience I have learned to give myself time to absorb the shock and deal with the loss. Anyone who goes through this will not "get over it" in a few days. I also learned that my only job at that point was to stay alive! Nothing else was expected of me. All of your advice in this video is spot on.You will survive and thrive, and so will all the rest of us who have lived through this. Thank you, Jane.

this happened to us over 30 years ago - husband came home from work on the Thursday to say that his boss was letting the business go by the Saturday, we had a 3 year old and I was just about to go on maternity leave for our 2nd child...oh and we were due to move house in the following 2 months - husband went out and just took whatever jobs he could get until a more suitable job came up - my thrifty. frugal gene kicked in and we survived. Such an emotional watch Jane, even though its 3 years in the past, and I know you & Mike continued to thrive and grow in your lovely home - an amazing amount of excellent advice for anyone going through similar situations in life

My advice to anyone made redundant is do not panic. Both my husband and I have been made redundant very suddenly. Called in to a meeting then walked off site! In all cases it turned out for the best. The best piece of advice I received from my father was to work out how much money we needed to give us the quality of life we needed. I did this and ended up taking a 35% reduction in salary but was so much happier. Retired very recently and now having to reevaluate budgets. Not what I expected but we have a roof over our head and can pay essential bills what more do we need. I really enjoy your videos and am learning so much from you. Thank you.

Jane, this was just what I needed this morning. I and my husband had to evacuate our home because of Hurricane Ida in the US. I have been such a basket case. What you said about not worrying about what you can't control is true. Praying for you at this difficult time in your life. But you are a trooper and will make it through. You are practical and sensible.❤️❤️

It pains me so much to see you so sad and close to tears. Sending you love from Germany. I was where you were 6 years ago and I wish I had had all the wisdom and counsel you shared in this video. At the time I wasn't living frugally and when I lost my job I was sort of forced into minimalism and started selling stuff I decluttered. Looking back, I am thankful for the lessons I learnt. I had waaaay too much stuff and used the money I made from decluttered clothes etc. to help towards covering my bills. When I then found a new job, one of thr first things I did was setting up an emergency fund and look into safe investment opportunities. Please never forget the situation is temporary and you will come out stronger and wiser! Be blessed!

The only thing I would add is to get up early, earlier than you did before the change of circumstances. Something about those wee hours where the new ideas flow freely. Let them flow and write them down, some will be way out there and you will laugh but some will be right on whether a new job or business venture or something. It works, allow several weeks and enjoy those early mornings.

My advice would be - don’t panic! By adopting all the things you suggest it buys you time - fortunately for us, the longest we did with my husband being unemployed was 4 months - as we Brits say - we learnt to cut our cloth accordingly - I looked at it as a challenge and totally changed our way of living - we came out of it stronger as a couple and had a good understanding of finances. We have now experienced 5 sudden job losses but things have a ha it of turning out ok if you are sensible with your money - good luck to you both - you have great transferable skills and the perfect attitude towards surviving this stage of your lives xx

Slightly differently, last week I handed my notice in. I decided my quality of life was being adversely affected by nhs hours and workload. A very difficult Decision, and not one we took lightly. I plan to work covering shifts that are short when I chose, a temporary contract of sorts, (“bank” shifts at the hospital) not as guaranteed an income, however for me (with small children) a much better work-life balance. Hello, my husband lost his job 3 years ago and I work 4 days a week. Luckily I have always been frugal and a pert from all the wonderful tips you gave I do something else.
    1. Don't throw down the sink the water that has been used for washing vegetables, but give it to the plants or the garden.
2.use up all the leftovers reprposing them in another shape
    3. When using the car, plan your trip and do the most things you can without going backwards and forward without a reason.
Talking about the vegetable garden, exchange products that you have abbondance of with friends, that will do the same with you. You will have more variety and nothing is worse than a boring diet!
Have a nice day and keep up the good job. Nice to see you on RUclips.

Also a thought for sudden financial insecurity/loss of income that I doubt will be relevant for Jane but might help someone else - check if you have bought anything recently like clothes, books, games etc that can be returned for a refund or even a credit note where you could use that note for essentials like food or fuel. Equally maybe you have some small gadgets or appliances from places like Amazon which stopped working or have a fault but you didn’t return them, these are easy to arrange online and you can get some money back in your account or use credit for essentials.

This video couldn’t have come at a better time for me! My husband will be losing his job at hospital, but they keep changing the date, so we just sit tight and wait.
We live on a homestead, so we have chickens for eggs. We have two rabbits, and we’ll be breeding them for meat rabbits. My pantry , freezer are well stocked. I also have a years supply of food because We are “Peppers”.
We will be eating lots of lentils, beans, and rice.
I can make “ burgers” out of lintels and from black beans too.
My problem is we still have debt, so I figure the money from the cut in half groceries will go to our debt. We will be selling things too.
My husband is retired military, so we have his pension from the military and we’ll have a pension from when he turns 65 this Dec. We also have two children at home ages 16 & 12. We homeschool them, so I will have to find ways to do without buying all the things homeschool! That will be difficult for me.
We also have another daughter who will be living with us and she will pay rent, so that too will help. She couldn’t have come home at a better time because we now have a rented bedroom with extra money coming in!
Jane your ideas have helped me greatly and today video was amazing to get me thinking on how to save money and pay off our debt!
Keep doing what you are doing I appreciate you and Mike so so much!
We will get through this with the help of your videos!

I’m so glad that you recently stocked your freezer with all that meat! You gave all great advice.
I would just add to go along with your “Take a go” advice… don’t be afraid to post on Facebook Market Place (or similar website) things that you are in need of. For example, “In need of top soil” or whatever the need is. It never hurts to ask! There may be someone out there that needs to get rid of the item you may be looking for, or may be willing to trade for something like a load of firewood. Also, maybe take advantage of Free giveaways on the website, like an old dresser or something that someone says is free, that you could repaint or repair and then resale to make some money. Also, sale anything that is no longer useful to you.
Wishing you all the best! I will definitely watch the ads to help support your channel. 😊🙏🏼

Great video as always. You’ve covered pretty much all the budget side but I will add to the points about keeping a routine and purpose. Don’t allow yourself to wallow in the situation. As well as looking for a new job, take the time you have been given to do those jobs you’ve put off. Give the kitchen cupboards a good clean out, sort out paperwork, contact friends you haven’t spoken to in a while. Feeling productive helps keep a positive frame of mind. And if people offer help, accept it. I know you’ve already been using your time productively, but it’s a good reminder to others.

I know friends have done online tutoring for exams, marking exam papers, cleaning, really anything.

When my husband got very ill he got half his salary for 2 years before he was forced to retire . I then realised we had to go more frugal than ever . That's when our fridge died .... I decided I would try doing without for a while and see how I would cope . Well we are 6 years later and we've never bought a new fridge . I remembered how my mother did before fridges were the norm and it is so easy . Then in order to reduce the electricity bill even more I cooked all the food in the freezer and unplugged the beast .... no regrets . I buy lots of vegetables in season or buy tins . I sometimes buy something frozen but it is a small amount eaten in one day , and just like every French we can't do without bread . So I bought a cheap bread machine and baked bread every day . Not exactly identical to our local baker's but I saved 70 per cent on the monthly bread bill . The machine paid itself in 2 months .

Great advice! Thinking of you and loving your energy and determination. I gave up my job because my elderly mother had a sudden stroke and needed me. The biggest burden was needing to pay off credit card balances but it was easier as when looking at what I wasted money on previously and cutting down everything to the minimum was tough but good for me. I realised that I had been living a life not in tune with my values and this suddenly brought me back to those values. Things I did that I chose were becoming vegetarian, batch cooking from scratch, turning lights off more often, walking close to nature, buying from charity shops and car boot sales, turning heating down, learning new inexpensive crafts, using something I already had not looking to buy something new, learning from free on-line courses like those offered by Future Learn as entertainment and as a confidence builder.

Life can change on a dime and when you least expect it..even if you've got adequate funds to manage, it's still hard b/c going forward you won't likely be able to recoup those funds quickly....it feels like going backwards after you've worked so hard to go forward..it can be discouraging for sure...I l always channel my mama...she forged ahead, and didn't let curve balls deter her and her hard life got better and better and when she died she was a 'rich' woman in all aspects..

Sometimes you can take a hardship withdrawal on certain savings accounts (401k) without penalty. You’d still have to pay taxes on that as income. Same with a health savings. We have one with a substantial amount, but if we spend it for things other than health we would be taxed on that amount as income.
Also sell your stuff! Downsize your clutter and turn it into cash. Get ruthless. My father used to call it “unloading ones camel”. You might be surprised at what you can get.
Side hustles. What can you do to earn a little money while you are looking for that replacement gig? Do you have friends that need odd jobs done? Or perhaps you could put up a flyer in the local shop or pub to advertise cleaning or handyman services or dog walking or baby sitting. Every little bit helps.
Those are just a few things I would do immediately to keep afloat.

I especially loved your advice on what to do with your last paycheck! Nearly 20 years ago my husband lost his job in the USA! My husband was eligible for unemployment for so many weeks but, in spite of sending out resumes from day one, He was over 50 years of age, and he was still jobless when the unemployment ran out! We had always been frugal and had saved $17,000 cash which we lied on until he finally found another job as a temporary employee! My husband had never missed a days work, and was a hard worker. He worked all overtime offered, was always on time, and was always there! When the company had a small opening to hire full time employees, he was hired! We continued our frugal ways and he stayed for his remaining work career with that company!

I know in my personal situation I have used my local food pantry constantly. I built a relationship with the workers at my pantry. Just in our conversations, they noticed that I would be willing to accept whatever extras they had and allowed my to go once a week for a vegetable and bread box along with my once a month food box with canned goods and meats. It never hurts to ask and they might know of a resource that you have never heard of. Always look for the positives and know “and this too shall pass” 🌈🌈🌈

With a side of canned green beans this is super cheap. Usually there is enough left over for a lunch for me. My husband rarely eats leftovers unless our expenses are really low. He does eat less at a main meal, then has dessert. Cheap desserts help him supplement is diet. I keep them low in sugar as he is diabetic. He knows how to cut back if he is gaining much weight.
