Thanks for valuable video. I love that you removed the grip to show a bit of the internals of some of the paddles. If you do another video, I would like to see the edge guard removed too. I know you have to destroy a paddle for it, but I think its worth it for the thousands of people you will be informing. Keep it up. I hope I can try one of yours some day. I have been loving the carbon fiber surfaces. I'm the proud owned of the first batch of CRBN 1 banned paddles. Carbon fiber for life ( or until something better is developed).

Almost all Carbon Fiber paddles are using 3K thread s. It’s the number of threads in a specific area. I don’t remember, but it could per square inch or cm. Also almost all paddles use T700 Carbon Fiber. This is only a rating for Carbon Fiber fabric, which ranges from T300 up to T1100. The higher the number the higher the tensile strength of the fabric. Also as the T rating goes higher the material becomes more brittle. So, T700 is a good rating for Pickleball paddles for strength and durability. The biggest difference between Pickleball paddles in regards to Carbon Fiber is if they use a fabric rated for commercial aircraft/military applications. Only a few Pickleball paddle manufacturers use this high grade Carbon Fiber fabric. The ones that do use it use Torey Carbon Fiber. The paddles with Torey Carbon fiber have been found to resist damage by up to 5 times versus the generic Carbon Fiber used by most paddle makers. It cost about $5 per paddle more to use Torey Carbon fabric material due to it being about 30% more expensive.
Larry thanks for putting up this video for the "newbies". I'm not new and kind of a paddle nerd when it comes to what's in a paddle. You did not talk about "Nomex" as a core material compared to Polypro cores. Core breakdown is a thing and I know there are differences there too. I just got the Vatic Pro 16mm after doing some research on my own.
Maybe in addition to discussion about shape and thickness you could also briefly discuss honeycomb cell size --8mm, 10 mm etc(diameter of the individual cells)? What is the cell size on the slice paddle?
@@kiwilabspickleball That is more of a power paddle dimension, which is good because combined with the 20 mm thickness there should be a good mix of power and control which I'm sure you know since you have been working on this for some time.👍

Two months ago I changed to Onix evoke premier with fiber glass compound and the change in power was important, it may lose precision but it's a matter of adjusting. You have not commented on this surface. I would like you to, thank you, as always very good comments.

I have a question though; A lot of paddles on amazon are made of carbon fiber but it also says the shaft material is Graphite and frame material is fiberglass. Could you clarify this for me please. Honestly, the random brands on Amazon are notorious for not having accurate info. They use SEO keywords to try to perform better on Amazon rankings. Those keywords are “carbon fiber” “fiberglass “ etc. so I would highly recommend only buying paddle on Amazon that you have seen reviews of on RUclips or other mediums.

There are lots of people who use adjectives like "plush" or "poppy" but has anyone made an objective measurement of paddle power? Can one not simply drop a ball from a set height onto it and see how high it bounces as a measure of elasticity, for example? If there is a standard ball (and one does it enough times to account for variable bounce), I feel that would be a good idea. One could even use a table tennis ball for more consistency coz it doesn't have holes. How high does a ball bounce of a kiwi paddle compared to the others?
That is referred to as “pop”. Power has to do with actually swinging the paddle. I am sure a test could be performed using a contraption of some sort to give a controlled and consistent swing.
You failed to mention which type of T700 you use. It is my understanding there is a huge difference in different T700 manufacturing and how long the surface lasts. I believe you use the more expensive version and that would be worth mentioning I think. I ordered one of your paddles mostly because I liked your videos. Looking forward to trying it out.
What do you think about the new pro drive? It’s not entirely new, but it’s rare in that it has Kevlar in it. And sandwiched with other polymer with the carbon.
I’ve heard mixed reviews. I’ve only played against one not with one. Seems like it has pretty great power. But I have heard complaints about weight and control. Definitely has power!
For Rec play? I mean no one is going to stop you. They might find you to be a little annoying to play with though, lol. But here's the direct quote from the USAP: Surface roughness. The paddle’s hitting surface shall not contain holes, indentations, rough texturing, or any objects or features that allow a player to impart excessive spin on the ball.
The Z5 also has a Nomex core instead of the more common polypropylene core. I am frustrated by the number of paddles that use polypropylene because I don't think they have a consistent sweet spot. I tried a demo Performance One Paddle from a guy in California and was amazed at the consistency of the sweet spot. But he is just one guy, and I am having trouble getting one from him. Please consider making an elongated Nomex core paddle with a carbon fiber surface using the surface knowledge you have gained from your experience. I believe the reason for the popularity of the Z5 is because of the core material.

Unfortunately nomex quality is hard to pin down in my experience. Plus only 2 of the many many many factories I have worked with even offer nome any more. It could be worth exploring down the road. But right now I don't feel confident in it.
My son and I won a tournament last weekend with 16 teams using nothing more than a couple of plywood paddles that cost us $25 for both of them.

Yeah I should have brought it up. Especially when talking about the Z5.
The nomex core is the reason why the Z5 is so loud and not the graphite face.
Just got the V7 Vatic pro but I am a new player, would you recommend it for a paddle to learn on?

Kevlar is really the best feeling paddle face that I have found. Buy a VIva Pro Gen 3 and you will find an amazing paddle for a great price!
The sound test doesn’t necessarily reflect the material, it’s also affected by how hollow the paddle is (comb size, whether there’s injection etc)

I thought the loud noise on the z5 is because of the core. It is not from graphite. It ithe core!!!!
