As Mori always says in her song review after party streams, she wants the deadbeats to find their own meanings in each song. But to make a long story short here is her personal story. Mori was a fan of underground Japanese rap, she lived in Japan working a regular job where she was as the song says underpaid...
dreaming of making it as a rapper she hung out with a group of like minded dreamers they would hang out at LIVES which is like a bar in the basement with a stage. Kinda like spoken word night but for music artists. The crew she hung out with was all in the J-Rap scene and Mori was a rapper had music out and was dreaming she would make it someday. All her friends at that time had dreams some of them she looked up to because they were far ahead of her. She was stilll on those stages rapping and dreaming with those people. She loved that life, but still a life she would not tell people at her regular job about.
But then that mess we all are dealing with hit Japan and the hangout spots closed down the scene was dying no more stages most gave up music all together went back to work they could find. That is the end of a life. That life is gone she can never go back. But during that downtime Hololive was hiring for English speaking talents to become a member. She went taking the audition lightly not thinking much of it but she got the job and blew up huge. So this is her blessed life now she moved from shitty apartment to a better space. Some old friends who were bigger than her and she looked up to them now have bitter feelings about her being bigger than they are. So lost a lot of that crew that life is gone. She sees herself as the bad guy, but she is telling herself she does not get to be sorry or whatever because she made it.
If you don't have time to watch her streams I hope this will help you understand. Calli is a Hololive talent but the rapper voicing that talent is telling you about a past life she loved that died because of the mess we have all been facing her world changed like most of ours did.
She will drop more original songs so hope you can check out anything you missed. Calli does not mind fans finding other meanings in her work.

I can't help but wonder who that might be. She's obviously still close to Fake Type and AO, so it's not them. I hope it's not Scott, Rollboy, or Rapbit, given how close they were.

She released a stream talking about this song. She's in a weird place where she's successful, but she's considered a "sell-out" by her old peers and heroes. Now she's the "villain" of the story. But she enjoys what she does, she's doing good work, she's financially stable, and she's reaching people. So she feels bad about making good, but if she stayed where she was, she probably never would have made it either.

    • @drakke125Channel
      @drakke125Channel 2 года назад +35

she lectures people who struggle or don't put in the effort
When she becomes successful she can't help but feel bad because she wants to make sure she doesn't become too full of herself either, and can't help but feel guilt when others get jealous...
seems she's quite a kind person.

While I wouldn’t put myself in even remotely the level of fame and fortune that Mori is in, I can personally relate to this song.
I left behind a bunch of friends and family to move completely across the country for a career that I absolutely love and don’t regret for a minute doing, but I had quite a few friends and family “fall out” of my circle as a result. While I do feel bad that a lot of my friendships withered away, I know that my life now is FAR better than the one I left behind and if my “friends” didn’t want to keep it, then they were never truly my friends.
I think a lot of people can relate to not only those lost friendships, but lost personality traits that come with growing up and doing what’s best for your own self-interest. I think Mori obviously realizes that as well and if her “friends” thought she was a sell-out for doing what she is doing now, then they were never truly her friends.

Mori got very emotional in the lyric dive stream for this song, as she explained there were many people she looked up to and admired, but now that she has gotten so massively popular, a lot of these people left her without a word, she said she only wanted to hear that her heroes were proud of her, but this didn't really happen. And even though she herself says that ever since she got into Hololive her life has significantly improved, she feels underserving and very guilty, because there are "more talented musicians than her that are not given a spotlight". She said making this song has let her come to terms more with her feelings about her past and present though.

Hey dave Wonderfull reaction, you almost got all the intent in the song, on his last lyrics stream she explains that this song is something personal, reminiscent of the old times where she look up to people as heroes but as time passed and her popularity rise up those relationships in the past are not the same and sometimes she dreams about the old times, for me is a bittersweet song that descrives human relations, all have a beginning and end.

Another interesting part about her seeing herself as a villain- she's said in an interview before that she used to hate the whole "idol culture" (and she also wrote lines making fun of the concept of an "idol rapper") before she eventually made friends with an idol vtuber, was really impressed by how hardworking she was, and changed her attitude. Then she got hired by Hololive, etc.
She says "the me that I could never befriend" - the person she was in the past probably wouldn't like who she is in the present. So while she's proud of what she's doing now, how can she blame the friends who think of her as a villain when she might have the exact same attitude if things had turned out different?
    It's really emotionally complex.

First off, Mori said that she wants everyone to be able to read their own meanings into the song and her lyrics in general, rather than there just being one right meaning. So, yes there is the meaning that it has for her that she shared, but she's actually happy that people have been finding their own meanings and interpretations of it as well, whether or not they match up exactly with what she was thinking about when she wrote it.
In short though, this is basically her thinking back to her time in the underground rap scene in Japan. She and her friends were dreaming of making it big, but didn't really believe it would ever happen. The underground scene itself eventually was dying off thanks to COVID, and so Calli chose to take her shot at joining Hololive. This kind of thing is something both she and her friends had held in disdain as selling out previously, so she burned a lot of bridges and even viewed herself as a villain by doing so. Now she's happy with where she is, but still can't help herself from thinking about what she had in the past from time to time, despite the fact that the scene and so many of the people she knew there just aren't around anymore even if she wanted to go back.

I think this is kind of an eulogy to the underground rap scene she was a part of. She begins by saying how people went there to express the numbness they felt in the city, the "labirynth of lights", and would use the rap scene to deal with the frustrations of their daily life. She says "I'll never have another chance to say, thanks for saving my life, i was hopeless". This is directed at the rap scene. It gave her an escape and hope amidst her struggles, and she shared the fleeting highs and lows of that scene with the friends she made. But then, things changed. Everyone kind of just accepted that scene as fantasy, and slowly drifted away in favor of "reality", and she had to choose between letting go of it like everyone else or take on a different persona in order to pursue the dream, a "villain", likely because she would have to stop being just herself singing about struggles but kind of "sell out" to a big company and become part of a larger industry. This took her to new heights, but alienated her friends who meant a lot to her. Now this is her job, her "real life", she made it, and she mourns her old life that had to die for her to pursue her goals.

I really enjoy watching reaction of Mori's latest song because every interprets the lyrics differently. Each person has their own takes and can make a connection to what is being said, but Mori is a hella of artist. She very open and honest with her music and lyrics. When you have time, you should watch the stream or highlights where she breakdown her lyrics.

I love the line about "you chose to make a trade" as it's quietly layered as it's referring to a career choice made that made her old crowd call her a sell-out aka sort of a deal with the devil kinda trade, but also she found this success playing a character not her own identity (another trade of her face to let her show her talent to a larger audience), but also it was a choice to go full time into making your dream your job, you chose to 'make a trade' out of your dream. There's like three layers just to that one line.
You can always count on Mori for lyrics you can chew on.

I'm still discovering new things when I listen to the lyrics, but it seems to me that this is a bittersweet song contrasting Callie now with her previous work as someone who's do live performances in small bars/clubs. She misses the freedom of that time, but also recognises it was going nowhere and she traded that to be successful (which her old freestyling self would have labelled being a 'villain'). She really packs so much of her feelings into this song it's amazing.

Powerful, inspriing, relatable, and incredible song from Caliope! Best song from Cali yet in my subjective view and honestly my favorite. I love the themes this song conveys, indicates, and experesses! Also, could you react to the song Baka Mitai from the soundtrack of the Yakuza game series, it has a low voice singer, and I know how much you like low sounding vocals.

More of a song about nostaliga, recollection, remisicensce, becoming a vicitim to one's own ambition, feeling guilty of one's success and notorierty. It's honestly open to interptation, but these themes are assoicated with how of much of a personal song this is to Caliope.

Hey Dave, I think you missed this video when putting together your playlist of Calliope Mori reactions. Loving all the Calli reactions, but have you considered taking a look at some of the other English speaking Hololive talents? While there aren't any other talents that I'm aware of who are known for their rapping, Gawr Gura (who you're familiar with) is an incredibly talented singer and her karaoke covers of certain songs are phenomenal. Additionally Hoshimachi Suisei, who is Japanese, has several original songs that blow me away every time I hear them. Just some things to consider. Looking forward to seeing more from you!
Edit: OH! Specifically I think it'd be neat to see your reaction to Unison by Houshou Marine! She's another Japanese Hololive talent who's vocally gifted and Unison is a really interesting experimental song.
