I have a 2016. Took it in for an oil change and was told about the fuel injectors. They replaced. Last week the injectors went bad again. The dealer fixed it at no charge. Driving away it stalled three times. There is a fuel sensor that needed to be cleaned. 15 minutes later back on the road and off on a 300 mile trip, no problems.
@dw5518 the direct injection get gunked up with carbon I switched to 93 octane 2 times a month and bottle of 44k injection cleaner 5 times a yr never had a issue.friends over at honda advise to do this.they see it all .they say these cars should use premium gas to help the direct injection carbon to build up.i have a 2020 .2 of the techs at honda have a 16 and 17 pilot both with 80k to 120k miles the both never had injection problem s because of using 93 octane. The rest of the techs do the same with with there passports and accords
Family owned a 2003 Pilot for 15 years. Have to say it was pretty reliable. We lucked out and didn’t have the mentioned transmission problem. It was smoother than the jerky transmission I had on a 2016 MDX, which I was so happy when I got rid of it after the lease ended.
My 2011 was bought second hand in 2013 from someone who drove it to Texas and then back to the Midwest in its first two years. We kept her garaged and replaced timing belt/tune up at 100k. Replaced all fluids. Other than a wheel bearing go bad and average brakes, the 11' has been pretty reliable. But, I really appreciate your tips on years.
I bought my 2011 used from a dealer with 31k miles on it. With the exception of brakes, timing belt, & tires I've only had to recently replace (1) MAF sensor. I currently have 170k miles on it and it idles and runs smoothly.
I have 2013 it performed excellent I have since 5 years bought used with 135k miles now it has 236k still running like king no major issuse just regular maintenance thanks
Can't say as I totally agree with you Dave. We bought the first Pilot in 2003 and drove it for over 230,000 miles without a single major issue. We now have two 2016 Pilots and while Honda replaced the injectors for free on one of them, we haven't had any other issues with them. The key to Honda's is to perform the maintenance and they will last as long as you want it.
@paulcampbell8 I do not know if your year was included in the recall for defective crankshaft machining. I am waiting to C if my 19’ Pilot is on the ‘Hit List.’ Check it out if u still have the vehicle.
Thanks Dave. Glad I ran into this video. Currently have a 04 Pilot EX with 417K miles! It been a great vehicle for us. But at 175K had to rebuild the tranny. Didn't regret it since we've doubled the mileage since then. Now we're retiring it to use seldom and want to buy a newer Pilot. We were on the fence on a 2015 vs 2016 Pilot and you're video was a great help. Go Pilots!
@@mike44b We ended up getting a 2019 Pilot with 44K miles. We love all the modern and safety features it has, wife is really happy with it. Now when I drive my 01 Lexus IS300 (305K miles) makes me crave a newer car for me because of all the cool features newer Pilot has. But I just keep saying my mantra "no car payment" lol. My 16 year old daughter now drives the 04 Pilot from time to time, great 3rd car.
2013 Honda Pilot with 154,000 and I do the oil changes when needed, had a code thrown on a spark and got timing chain work done. All in all, I love this vehicle! Great utility use and still looks great! I've got the EXL package.

I bought my 2013 four-wheel-drive Honda pilot EXL with 81,000 miles. Now it has 154,000 miles and I have not had any problems. I always change the oil at 6000 miles and I change the differential transmission oil and the regular transmission oil at 98,000. I also replaced the water pump at 109,000 just because it’s the cooling system and that should always be maintained. Other than those things the vehicle has been very reliable and I love it.
We purchased our 2016 Pilot EX-L AWD in October 2015. Just did the "big" service at 105,000 miles (timing belt, water pump, drive belt, spark plugs, valve cover gasket, etc) and thought I'd give a brief long term review. I did not like the optional 9 speed transmission offered at the time, and so we bought the 6 speed version with a traditional P-R-N-D-L controller. Didn't like push button transmission selectors then and still don't like them now. This has proven to be a good choice so far. We did experience some intermittent power hesitation issues under load at around 80K miles, which felt all the world to me like a fuel starvation problem, but turned out to be easily solved with updating the transmission software and a transmission fluid change at the dealer. I opted to pay an additional $700 or so when the vehicle as new for the "towing package" including a then-optional transmission fluid cooler, and I've had no problem towing occasional 3000+ pound loads. It is rated for 5000 lb towing capacity configured this way. We did have a couple of first year design problems. The FM reception was very poor on the infotainment system intially. It took several months, but Honda eventually addressed this issue with a TSB calling for a replacment remote tuner with updated software. Shockingly, someone forgot to tighten a brake master cylinder line during assembly, and our brake fluid emptied completely in the first couple hundred miles of driving. Our local dealer (Penske Honda) rectified this right away and was extremely apologetic for the scare it gave my wife. The infotainment system in this model year was only so-so, with the poor design decision to eliminate a physical volume knob. Enough people complained that Honda went back to a physical control in newer versions. The newest generation Pilot was recently introduced, and it is a (subjectively) better looking SUV, but disappointing to me in that it delivers worse fuel economy than my 2016. The newer version claims have softer seating materials and less cabin noise than mine, but I've yet to drive one to confirm this. Other than the above, the Pilot has proven to be a capable and reliable hauler in any weather with mostly routine maintenance over the years. I've become a fan of the Honda "maintenance minder" since owing this vehicle, since it is able to actively monitor remaining oil life rather than basing service intervals on mileage alone. We only use the third row once or twice a year, and it's fine for occasional use, but otherwise claustrophobic for adults ( but less so then the Toyota Highlander that we cross shopped at the time).
I appreciate the feedback. Also, just so you know, if you visit quotes.everymandriver.com you can see the BEST DEALS on new and used cars/trucks in your zip code! It’s a free search engine. Try it.
I have a 2016 Pilot with just over 80k miles and it’s been a great vehicle. We did have the fuel injector issue (showed up as an emissions error on the dash), took it to our dealer and Honda put in fuel injectors at no charge.
How has it been a year after this comment so far and how many miles are you at now? Thinking of a used 2016 and really want someone’s opinion that owns one since the RUclips guy scared me a bit on the 2016 model 😂
I have a '21 Passport (same vehicle as Pilot, just a bit shorter without third seat). I recommend, if you're purchasing new, look for a dealer with a lifetime warranty as part of the deal. I did this and although, nothing's for sure in life, since I take very good care of my vehicles it gives me that extra piece of mind that I'm probably going to be ok if the transmission gives me issues or other things pop up. Something to keep in mind; Honda, Toyota, and other Japanese manufactures are very good when it comes to problems with their vehicles out of warranty when the mileage isn't out of the ordinary. I've had very good luck with having issues fixed by these manufacturers when things went wrong. Not to say this will continue but I believe they care a bit more about their customers than Chevy or Dodge in my experience.
Usually dealerships that throw in something funky like a "lifetime" warranty are charging you for it somewhere in the deal. They already come with a 100,000 mile factory warranty... Id a lifetime warranty is that important to you you can always get an extendes warranty the day of purchase or add one in the future.
Good overview, thanks. I can see some of the issues you mention.. We had a 2005 that we beat the crap out of and we donated it with 275,000 miles, it was still running with original transmission. We currently have a 2019 and it has some electrical issues (Fakra connectors). Recall fixed that.
Honda Pilot 2016. We Bougth it used in 2020. Now has 105,000 miles. One day all wheels locked up in the middle of the street during a red ligth. Some transmision solenoid got fixed and now it has a plethora of codes we are working out.

I have had a 03,05 and now a 16 and I love all of them and I never had them problems at all but thank you for the video so I can keep and eye out for these signs
Hey Dave Erickson, I have a 2005 pilot ex, bought it brand new, 281,000 miles, regular oil and fluid changes, only issue changing wipers, headlights, taillights bulbs, changing out tires, the usual stuff with occasional dings on the panels door due to careless people not caring of other people's property. I listened to your video a few times and am glad after you mentioned 2005 that you didn't mention it again. You know it is dependent on the owner if they take care of their stuff or not. Even though it's normal to have recalls and corrections on early models it's all dependent on circumstance that's why no one human looks alike. Its character.
@yoshibenari5644 Unfortunately, Honda has gone the way of Boeing - Half A$$ and Fast. I have a six speed on my 19’ Pilot, which I thought? was a better choice than the 9 speed. Well - evidently I thought Wrong! The 6 speed has a bad track record. The recalls are piling/stacking up. Fuel pumps, camera problems, defective sun visors, infotainment issues, crappy exhaust systems, bad welds on the frame, bad machining on the crankshaft (journals and rod bearing do Not match up) and a multitude of other problems. I can not believe u put 281K miles on yours if u did not disable the VCM (Variable Cylinder Management). It should be called VCMismanagement! They sacrificed the engine to tweak out a mile or two more per gallon. I read that the newer models have issues with the steering that can Lock Up. All this in the name and sake of Corporate Greed!
I had a 16’ - it was awful. The driving assist would lock up the brakes, the head unit for EVERYTHING would frequently reset, and finally, it started locking up in heavy traffic. Hard stalls while in gear and would then struggle to “Start” like the computer couldn’t figure out what was going on. That was my first Honda experience. My wife is back in a TRD 4Runner and of course, zero issues in any environment.
‘16 was the first year of the current generation Pilot. It’s not advisable to buy first year model of a new generation as they are prone to ‘teething’ problems. Sorry, my 2015 is the most reliable of the previous generation and is also the last year, hence the reliability I believe.
Have a 2016 pilot EX-L 165,000 kms breaks, Air conditioning change oil and transmission oil often. Radio is the pits no Apple air play, serius antenna stopped working . Drive to florida every November stay to April end . The seat kills both wife and myself. Great driving car and powerful steering is marvelous. Love the looks . White paint chips a bit .
I bought a new Pilot EXL in 2005. Drove it for 10 years, then gave it to my older son. He drove it for 6 years, gave it to his younger brother, who still uses it as his wife’s daily driver. It has north of 250,000 miles, no major mechanical issues. I have a 2019 Elite. It’s been reliable did have infotainment issues.
I am getting ready to buy the 2005 ex-l too, it is SUPER clean with 135,000 on it and I am paying (assuming it's not a rusty mess underneath) $6,000 for it. My god I hope it's a good deal and is reliable
2012 Honda Pilot owner here. I brought it new and it currently has about 180k miles. No issues however I have maintained regular maintenance…timing belt, water pump, tuneup, alternator etc . Great suv
We own a 2009 Pilot that has excessive oil consumption. Honda rebuilt the engine at no charge, but the oil consumption started back about 50,000 miles later. Getting ready to install a VCM Muzzler to stop cylinder deactivation so hopefully that will stop the excessive oil consumption.
I have a 2009 pilot too just install the vcmtuner 2 and it’s working fine, bought it second hand in great condition thanks to the previous owner, but I started changing timing belts water pump valve cove gasket give it a new paint job, front and back lights new plus front grill struts and shocks, next new tires it looks and runs sweet, gonna get the tranny service next Go All Pilots.💯😎😎😎
@jmparks1575 I have read quite a few posts about the negative side effects that the VCM causes. Why Honda added this ‘Mforphodite’ mileage enhancer is beyond common sense considering Cadillac did this back in the 70’s. It was a disaster back then, and Still is. Sacrificing the engine and motor mounts to squeeze an extra mile or two per gallon is NOT worth it. I installed a disabler and have not had any issues so far on my 19’ Pilot. Though I only have less than 13k on it. When installing one, let the engine sit for an hour and keep the key fob at least 20 feet away from the vehicle before proceeding. I also watched posts that recommend changing the transmission fluid on the 6 speed at 15k miles.
Leased a 2015 Pilot. It was an absolute joy, and never gave a minutes trouble. Had a 2007 Ridgeline and drove it for 15 years! It was practically bomb proof. Drove all over the USA. It never let me down. Yeah, I'm pretty keen on Hondas. Just leased a 2022 Pilot. No regrets.
I have a 2016 pilot, purchased new and already has over 100k miles. We travel a lot as a family and my kids are busy! I don’t love it but it’s been pretty reliable. Our only issue so far is the AC this year. We can’t seem to get it working properly and the dealer has been pretty rude through the process. I will say…I miss my 06 Lexus RX 330.
I have a Honda Pilot 2013 and love it...but you are correct about the paint problem. It's going to need a new paint job soon. Thanks for the great info...good to know in case I want to purchase another one.
I’ve got a 2012. VCM variable cylinder management was a frustrating feature on mine. Still have the pilot but have installed S-VCM “muzzler”. Drives much smoother. I recommend using oem parts for this car when doing any repairs. Especially axles. Otherwise love the vehicle and have no intention of replacing it. 141,000 miles.
2007 Honda Pilot 300,000 miles and still going, had issues with it but nothing mayor. Most annoying issue VCM, nasty vibration in the engine but works fine. There's a suppressor that works good in it but wears out quickly.
I own a 2005 Honda Pilot with over 275,000 miles on original engine and transmission. Still doesn't burn or leak and fluids. I bought it used and love it. Have the maintenance records since 100,000 miles. Has had careful and complete maintenance since new, Mobil 1 oil change every 3,000 miles. Frequent trans. fluid change.
May be i got lucky with my 2009 pilot ,bought it brandnew still no problem for 14 years of owning it .even now. transmission shifting smooth. Not consuming oil.not even 1 engine lights on. Only regular maintenance and timing belt change after 100k.
I think your comments are spot on. I currently own a 2006 Pilot with 233k miles and I just had to replace the original starter. I have had very few problems with this car. I found a 2010 Pilot for my son-in-law who had some initial issues but after resolving them is very happy with his car. I know a family who bought the 2016 and have had some majore issues. So I think your years are exactly right. Still love my Honda
Just traded in my 2016 Pilot for 2020 Subaru Forester. I had a 2006 Pilot that was an indestructible dream. The 2016 was the exact opposite. Was growing non stop mold, every time it would rain the rear cargo compartment would fill with water and no where I took it could find or fix the leak. Load groaning anytime I switched from Park to Reverse or Park to Drive. I tried my best to love my 2016 Pilot since my 2006 Pilot was my favorite vehicle ever. So sad that Honda would ruin such a good thing by throwing away the details that made the 06 Pilot so great. When it is time to buy my next new car in maybe 2030 I will go test drive and inspect the new Pilots but I unfortunately don't see myself taking the risk ever again. My Subaru has been great so far. Shame on you, Honda for losing a loyal Piloteer who did all I could to try to love my Pilot.
I know what you mean about the '06 Pilot, I had the red one loaded out with all the options and I loved that SUV! It was indestructible, reliable and drove like a champ! I will never forget my first speeding ticket in years was my '06 driving up through Utah on Hwy 189. That local Trooper was so nice because I was doing 125MPH in a 55 zone and yet he wrote the ticket up for 75MPH in a 55 zone! I never pulled a stunt like that again! LOL.. But it just goes to show you awesome, fun and comfortable I felt in that particular model year! Best wishes!
We had a 2007 EX-L and a 2012 Touring that were both excellent vehicles. However, the 2017 Elite we had did not live up to our expectations. We didn't experience any reliability issues, but we traded it at less than 3 years old for a 2020 Ascent Touring. Our biggest complaints about the 2017 Pilot were the rough and unpredictable transmission shifts, the delay with the idle-stop feature, and the very bland interior for high price. The Ascent has had a few issues that were fixed under warranty, but it is drives smoother, the interior is a better place to be, and it costs less. From what I've seen and heard about the 2023 Pilot, it is improved over the 3rd gen and brings back some of what we loved about the earlier Pilots. The transmission is also the Honda 10-speed that has been proven in other Honda/Acura vehicles. The ZF 9-speed that was in our 2017 was very poorly tuned.
I have a 2018 Toyota Highlander that I bought it brand new, and ofcourse it’s a great vehicle. BUT PREVIOUSLY I HAD A 2005 HONDA PILOT EXL IN SHINNY BLACK AND I OWNED THAT HONDA PILOT FOR ALMOST 10 YEARS AND IT NEVER GAVE ME ANY PROBLEMS. For me TOYOTA AND HONDA ARE THE ONLY TWO BRANDS THAT I ALWAYS BUY FROM.
I have a 2017 EX-L with 55K on it. Original battery just died, but that’s more life than expected for a battery! I leased it first, then bought it. No problems at all. I do have to say that purposefully stayed away from the Touring/Elite models because I was leary of the 9 speed transmission. The lesser trimmed models have a 6 speed that I viewed as more reliable. The 9 speed may only increase the mpg by 1, of much at all. Regardless, I had a nice 2015 Special Edition that never seemed to align in front correctly and wore out tires prematurely. The ride, and mileage of the 2017 is so much better than the 2015! Nice upgrade! And yes, I purposefully avoid new year models that have not had the bugs worked out. Otherwise, big fans of Honda products. 😊
2011 Honda Pilot, timing chain twice at 100 and 200 thousand miles. Needed a software update at both of those mileage listed above. Have replaced brakes and rotors, going to replace more driving part here soon on the drive train.
I didn't do my homework Dave! Wish I discovered your channel before I committed to this 2016😭 but the previous owner was an old guy he maintained it well full service record all done at honda I'm hoping it doesn't do anything wonky anytime soon
Same here and I have it serviced by the dealer whenever a code comes up. 2016 and as reliable as the sun coming up. I will use Dave’s advice on upgrading my gas. It makes sense.
@abe8814 no not at all just swap trans fluid an oil a little more than id like too but i do it to be safe with tranny fluid prolly needed only every 30k miles and feel like oil change is needed every 2 and a half to 3 months
We have a 2009 Honda Pilot with 189K miles and so far (knock on wood) not a single issue you've mentioned. Now, we had other 2 SUVs (Explorer and Pathfinder) and OMG !!! Both broke down and ended up selling them with rebuilt trannies/engine (Explorer). I'm lucky I guess.
Do me a favor and listen to this man. I dread buying our 2016 pilot touring because I’ve been a hell of an experience. First the keyless start system error is a plague that won’t go away until you replace it. Also the Christmas tree of false errors that all show up at once for no reason, overwhelming you with a hand full of issues all supposedly happening at the same time. Just a nightmare, something to avoid at all cost. Unless you like living a stressful life, then by all means, have fun!

My 07 pilot has been rock solid all these years, 156k plus miles, no VCM and all original with the exception of the PCV valve, some suspension parts and radiator that I replaced because it was staring to rust and developed a minor leak. My friend 2016 pilot Transmision went out at 70k miles. The key is maintenance and high quality fluids.
Hi do you have any advice on a Honda Pilot 2016 stalling problem? The car start with some harder cranks but nothing affects the performance issue. After the car get warm and you drive for 20 minutes plus and stop the engine the car start right away. if you wait 15 minutes then all the light on the dash board illuminate then the car then die. If you start again the idle is very rough and fell like there is no gas going in. If you wait 2 hour the car start fine, if I disconnect the fuel line near under the hood the fuel get released and the car can start after. Spark Plug are new Oil battery 113K miles
I have a loaded 2013 Touring with 110K. My failures have been: two wheel bearings, a side view mirror, and front control arms (recall). I've been told that I have cracked front suspension bushings that may need work in a year or so ($2400 to fix at the dealer), we're gonna keep an eye on it and replace when its appropriate. The drivetrain has been dead reliable. I suppose I can't say it's been trouble free, but throwing 1K-2K on average into it a year in maintenance is a heck of a lot cheaper than replacing it with a new, equivalent car (50--60K). I can't complain.
My 2018 Touring (9 speed) is at 100k+ miles. I baby the transmission, including frequent fluid changes at the dealership, as I knew it is a weak point. Only issues so far have been cylinder 4 misfire (warranty covered), EGR valve, and throttle body being dirty (my own fault due to not changing the air filter often initially). I plan on trying to get to 300k miles as I like it and I really don’t want a hybrid or electric car.
Own a 2004 pilot with over 300000 kilometres and that vehicle has been a rock! Virtually all original except 1 fuel pump ,tires, brakes and fluid changes even the paint is still amazingly good!
my Pilot11 Touring is pushing 353k! livin and lovin it and thankful these tanks are worth the purchase.although, I need help fixing the rear camera when on reverse.
I used to have cars such as RR, Mercedes, almost every Cadillac models and so on, the only reliable car I find in my life, it is the Honda since 1990, me and the family 👪 we drive Honda, since we drive Honda, I forgot what is the address of my Mechanic used to see him for 60 years!!!
Thank you, I cannot complain on my 2010. Love it! Has a lot of life left. I am looking for a 2020 pilot with all the bells and whistles I hope to find one within our budget. Thanks you for all the information, it so helped!
My wife and I bought a 2020 Pilot Touring brand new. It's been really good so far. The only "issues" we've seen are a recall with the dash display that was obviously covered under warranty. It's great if you have kids. On long car rides we hook up a FireStick to the HDMI port and let the kids watch stuff while running a hotspot.
Hey Dave, don't forget the 2005 radiator issue. The trans cooler would break, and strawberry milkshake. I've had a bunch of Pilots, none newer than 2008. Also, none with less than 200k miles on them. Great vehicles, avoiding the 03 and 05 like you stated. We did buy a 16 MDX recently, and the push to start button is giving us a little problem. I dislike the newer vehicles due to much more electronics to go wrong.
To solve the oil usage u need to change or clean the pcv valve and use a thinker grade oil when it gets to higher milage. Every pilot will last you over 200,000 miles if you give service and change timing belt on time. My 2011 has 250,000+

04 Honda Pilot owner here. Purchased new. Dk all my own maintaince. Currently 185k and running like a tank! I’m in the market for another one. Preferably a 1st gen 04, 06. I would also look at a 2nd gen in a 2010 model only.
I bought a 2005 Pilot brand new, and loved it. It had one problem over the course of its 210,000 miles that didn't involve someone crashing into it, and that cost me $230. I finally junked it in 2019 when a new driver didn't realize they should pull over when the vehicle is overheating. That's just an anecdote, but I would have never hesitated to buy another based on my experience. I currently own a 2006 and a 2015. I am still happy.
We have a 2003 Pilot and only had failing hoses (20 yrs old) burning oil and the heater isn’t working now. But 1998-2004 Honda transmissions are notoriously BAD. My Accord 2003 had a transmission replaced.
I have an 04. 250k miles and runs like a top. Uses oil and I had to replace front end parts. Lower ball joint, sway bar and control arm bushings. I also put new tires and brakes all the way around. Never have done the recommended timing belt replacement but at this point I'm not prepared to spend that kind of money on this 20 year old honda. In fact I'm not spending any more on it period. I will just drive it until it dies and upgrade then. By the way, I love this thing! It's been a great vehicle!
I had a '06 Pilot for years that I loved! I somehow got persuaded over to German cars for a awhile before I switched back to Honda and bought a '22 Pilot that I'm enjoying the newness of it all so far. I actually was searching for "Honda Pilot Apple Car play glitchy" when I found your video. I am disappointed in how glitchy the Apple Car play is. I don't think this is any Honda defect. I know so many of these interfaces are made by 3rd party manufacturers. It often disconnects for no reason and I have to unplug it from the iphone and plug it back in. When people call me, it's CRAZY LOUD even though in the iphone the ringer volume is turned way down. The Apple car play map interface is PAINFULLY SLOW! It is so slow I would often miss my turn if I was focusing on the map and not the directions. I like to often zoom in on google maps on my phone to see my route in better detail, and that is not available on the screen on the Honda. And in fact, if you try to swipe...you have to literally swipe and wait 3 seconds before it reacts! That is just horrible. To be honest, I unplugged from Apple car play now and just use bluetooth for my music. So as you can probably guess, not impressed with the Pilot's Car play interface on the '22 model year. Not sure if that is Honda's doing or if so many other car companies have similar issues.
My work truck is a 2011 pilot. I’ve driven from Ohio to Texas, Florida, New Jersey, and all the states in between. I have however had the transmission rebuilt, and a new alternator, and do regular upkeep on the oil. The alternator and the transmission went out on the same trip to Pittsburgh. Pennsylvania is cursed.
Auto stop on 2020 Pilot is not a feature, it’s a defect. Can’t turn it off permanently. Wears down your battery and starter. Recall only disables it until you change the battery. Then it engages again. Have to take it back to dealership, who says you can’t disable it permanently.
I've owned a 2005 and still own a 2006. The 2005 had close to 200k when I sold it. The 2006 has 180k. They both had issues with the VSA. The work around is to turn it off when driving on sand, gravel or snow. If the conditions are bad enough, I will use the VTM 4-Lock. I had no other issues with either of these vehicles. Solid and relatively comfortable, I would (and did) take them anywhere.
I have a 2003 Pilot with over 250K miles. It never had the dreaded transmission self- destruction and the engine is still good. I have been using it in Guatemala for the last six years and it has held up well - considering the abuse it takes on local roads. I have actually broken two KYB front struts and have replaced most of the bushings and engine mounts. The thing you have to look out for on any Pilot that had its origins in snow country is rust in the rear end, especially in the rear subframe. Other than that, they are solid cars.

I have a 2003 with 203K on it, no transmission problems @ all, that being said the transmission fluid changes were done every 30K . Yeah it's rusty now but it's still works good. My only gripe is why Honda didn't use timing CHAIN & hydraulic lifters. That 100K belt & water pump etc replacement is expensive...
Thanks for your video Dave I was my breath before I listened to your video, because I have a 2018 Pilot Elite. Purchased new, and now with a little over 60,000 miles. I’ve always had at least 1 Honda in my driveway since my first one, a 1977 Accord, and have never had a problem with any of them. Which leads me to why I was holding my breath before listening to your video. I’ve had to replace the dealer installed lit running board lights a few times, I’ve had issues with the rear hatch, the 9 speed transmission gear selector switch, and I had a problem where all the warning lights were on in the dash. All were covered under the factory warranty, but as I said before I never experienced any problems with Hondas in the past. I’ve got an extended 100,000 mile warranty, but with only 40,000 miles of coverage left I am concerned if I should trade it in before it gets to 100,000 miles. I know it really won’t owe me anything at that point, but I’ve been use to running Hondas over 200,000 miles and giving them away!!
I have a 2011 I purchased used and have had it for 4 years I have almost 200k and it’s going strong haven’t had a major issue or major repairs . I love this car

Have a 2017 Pilot we are getting rid of. My wife loves the car but the last issue we have to dump it as fast as possible. Had the injectors replaced under the extended warranty a few years ago and last year the start stop button after it would no longer start, it was replaced under the recall. Those issues were fine but the latest was the error message to use the parking brake when trying to to put it in park, it would go in. Brought to Honda and they never heard of that issue but their diagnosis testing said the only fix is to replace the transmission. This is at 76,000 miles. My mechanic (non honda shop) had a Pilot the same year with 80K miles come in where Honda said it would be $10,000 to replace the transmission. He couldn't get it fixed for any cheaper since the only source for the transmission was directly from Honda so they had it clear the code and trade the car in before the code came back on. That is what we are doing also!

I have a 2005 which l brought new and have never had a problem. My husband hit a deer and we ended up having to replace the engine but it's doing great figure for a car that's almost 20 years old it's good
Recent Pilots/Passports had faulty electrical connectors in their wire harnesses (look for "MOST Bus Network") causing display problems or popping/crackling sounds. Honda extended their electrical system warranty and replacing the wire harnesses completely resolved the problem for over a year now (mine is a 2020 Pilot). My Honda dealership said it's happened to hundreds of Pilots so it should be easy for them to resolve. No other issues so far.
I had the exact same problem with my '20 Pilot Touring model. The issue started when it was brand new, at around 500 miles. It took two different dealerships three tries and several MOST Bus wiring harness replacements before they finally resolved the popping and crackling noises coming from the infotainment system. Nearly drove me nuts! This is my ninth Honda product and I've seriously considered never buying another, due to this poor build quality control problem.
Dave, you must do vocal gigs bro . Great tone, awesome rhythm, pronunciation. Some guys doing the audio books reading aren’t even close as good as you are . 👏🏾👏🏾 This said, i am a 2018 Pilot owner, it works great . Just had a few recalls on it recently and spark plugs need to be replaced . Other than that, its awesome 🙌🏾🙌🏾 .

2014 Pilot EX-L with 123K miles and going strong... No issues other than normal wear and tear stuff... Actually waiting for the new gen pilot to be released just in time for the 20th anniversary of the Pilot nameplate... Might upgrade then
@@lisastankavich3554 all depends on how I drive... Average 350-400 miles to the tank... I'm sure if I'm more careful, I could go over 400 miles per tank...
Ok. This scares me a bit. Currently have a 2016 EXL AWD. Already had a few issues that the dealer fixed. Biggest one is the hesitation at lower RPM. Thought it was the engine. Turned out to be the transmission fluid prematurely shearing. There was a TSB on it so the dealer covered it no problem. Also had an evap problem under warranty. Never had any problems with the head unit, knock on wood. Alignment seems to go out periodically without hitting any major bumps or going off roading. But that could just be my SA trying to make a few bucks from his customers. Sunroof doesn’t want to close at least every other year. Easy reset procedure found on internet. Dealer wants $300 to fix it. Our Pilot follows trick maintenance schedules. Engine still runs like new at 85K miles. VTM-4 got us through minor floods and mud after Hurricane Irma. Haven’t had problems with the injectors. I had it cleaned at 40K miles. But I drive it more aggressively sometimes to burn up the gunk accumulation and use premium every now and then. Honda engines love to be driven hard. Our 2021 Passport EXL 2WD on the other hand is flawless. Knock on wood!!! It’s our sports car. Good for the southern weather and will never see mud or snow.

Can you tell honestly which brand mid size suv should I buy? Because I want a mid size SUV which will run perfectly for 400k to 500k km Without Any Big Issues, if you know which will be the perfect then you can give me suggestions please except Toyota because Toyota is very good but Toyota car design I don't like that's why
I have a 2016 Honda Pilot with 100k miles that won't shift into park. I know this is a long shot, but I can't find anywhere it talks about a solution. It is giving codes P07E4 and P2638. Any recommendations?
Had a 2019 Pilot Elite I had to go with the lemon law for the infotainment system and speedometer screen kept blacking out thankfully the manufacture bought it back from me for original msrp but over all a great engine…
@@jrb.m.9543 yes it started around 5,000 miles but for my wife’s ELITE it started around 300 miles but I think Honda already found a fix maybe an update not sure we both got lemon law buy back
I have a 2004 pilot with 255k. Original Engine and transmission running strong. Has needed quite a few repairs but not til after about 235k. I replaced the windshield wiper motor, alternator, radiator, drive shaft(u joints were bad), a few muffler repairs. Having said that. I feel it is an excellent car. Everything will wear out eventually on any car.

Fact, Ron Boushards Honda In Lancaster Mass. Installed a used an rebuilt half-shaft in my 05 Element and implied that it was a new Honda OEM. Never made it right after later acknowledging the mistake. Later they offered to pay for the install costs. Think about that. A company, that had any honor would have offered to install the OEM part for free, refunded me and apologised. That never happened. Run from them. Also..... have you heard the rumor that dealers use bulk oil. Not OEM. Technically voiding your warranty.
We have a 2016, 8 years old Touring round 86,000 miles. Mechanically, we've had no issues with it. The only thing really wrong with it now is that the suspension seems somewhat harsh and rougher than newer cars compared with newer vehicles. We're now shopping for a new vehicle and we were surprised how well the car was holding up to brand new 3-rows. That said, things that are not so good is that the infotainment system is pretty terrible as is the adaptive cruise control (it is overly aggressive braking and slow to reaccelerate) and it had to go though a lot of recalls the first year - not entirely surprising for the 1 year of that gen. We also had the driver's side seat heater fail that was repaired under an extended warranty. I can't think of any other real issues. That said looking forward to to a new 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe now..

My 2017 EXL has 61k miles. Now engine won’t go pass 2000rpm. Every single error messages and light on the dash right now. Parts on back ordered. Need a new camshaft at 61000 miles is definitely not acceptable
He's right. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT buy a 2016 Pilot Touring! At 120k the special 9-speed German transmission (from Audi) failed and they wanted $11k to fix it with no partial concessions at all - fully knowing that the transmission is junk and all over the internet about it. No other 3rd party shop in town will touch it. Honda even stopped using it in subsequent years (proof). No recall, no nothing - Honda was borderline rude with us. The ego! This car of mine is throw away now. After 4 Honda's and 1 Acura, I am no longer a customer of Honda/Acura. Total BS.
As the second owner of 2005 Honda Pilot. I can say that this is the best car my family has owned. Just keep up with the scheduled maintenance (not the dealership recommended maintenance) and you're golden. Alas, here in the rust belt of the Midwest has paid a toll on the body panels and pain. These SUV's are bullet proof
Have you heard of 2016 accelerator failure during highway speeds. Intermittent failure while at highway speeds lasting several seconds with no indication on the instrument panel.
'18 LX 64.000mi. Third owner. Owned for one year. Have had to replace leaking tensioner(timing), and heater core(ac). These two added up to 5,000 in repair. Thank goodness for warranties.

I have a 2016 Honda Pilot with 390,000 miles and going.
I’ve done all my maintenance, and haven’t had any issues.

@@rifisherman9126would you recommend a 2016 Honda pilot? I’m looking at one with over 107k
Family owned a 2003 Pilot for 15 years. Have to say it was pretty reliable. We lucked out and didn’t have the mentioned transmission problem. It was smoother than the jerky transmission I had on a 2016 MDX, which I was so happy when I got rid of it after the lease ended.
Got a 03 with 225k miles..best vehicle I've had in 20 years..last was a 94 Nissan truck 4cylinder
I have almost 150,000 so my 11’ is still young but no issues.
I have 2013 it performed excellent I have since 5 years bought used with 135k miles now it has 236k still running like king no major issuse just regular maintenance thanks
I’m looking at a 2013. Thanks for the info!
Did you change the timing belt?
We’ve had our 2013 Pilot for about five years too. No big issues. Regular maintenance and she still rides quiet and smooth.
does gas mileage change over the years significantly?
Can't say as I totally agree with you Dave. We bought the first Pilot in 2003 and drove it for over 230,000 miles without a single major issue. We now have two 2016 Pilots and while Honda replaced the injectors for free on one of them, we haven't had any other issues with them. The key to Honda's is to perform the maintenance and they will last as long as you want it.
Just because you didn't have the problem doesn't mean it isn't a tendancy. Our 2016 is now completely dead with a seized engine at 141k miles.
We've had our 2003 Honda Pilot for over 20 years and it is still in very good shape and runs great. No big problems here!
@paulcampbell8 I do not know if your year was included in the recall for defective crankshaft machining. I am waiting to C if my 19’ Pilot is on the ‘Hit List.’ Check it out if u still have the vehicle.
Yours is one car. It has nothing to do with whether or not the model of that year was prone to issues that.
Go Pilots!
I have a 2012 Pilot with 195,000 and tranny is still going!!
2015 is the bomb. Currently have one as a daily driver and it’s been almost 5 years of bliss .
My 2006 Pilot went for 230,000 miles. They’re the best. Francisco what did you end up buying and did you like?? 417k thats wild.
I have 2018 Pilot, 60k miles. Not a single issue. Other than the routine maintenance, the only out of pocket expense is $800 tire change.
2013 Honda Pilot with 154,000 and I do the oil changes when needed, had a code thrown on a spark and got timing chain work done. All in all, I love this vehicle! Great utility use and still looks great! I've got the EXL package.
2003 Honda Pilot comes with a timing belt, not a timing chain

The infotainment system in this model year was only so-so, with the poor design decision to
eliminate a physical volume knob.
Funny b3cause the guy above u says they're the worst. Funny how it changes from person to person
@@youngatwista first year models of new generations are not the best to own in relation to reliability. They usually come with ‘teething’ problems
Had some experience and got free replacement too. They stand behind their cars.
He’s right on with the fuel injector. Same problem when mileage hit 60,000. They fixed it for free as part of recall
How has it been a year after this comment so far and how many miles are you at now? Thinking of a used 2016 and really want someone’s opinion that owns one since the RUclips guy scared me a bit on the 2016 model 😂

I have a Honda pilot 2015, I bought it new I live in Alaska great SUV ..All I've had to only replace tires and battery. love it 9 years later
@alams31 Honda doesn't offer 100K warranty, that would be Hyundai.

Hey Dave Erickson,
I have a 2005 pilot ex, bought it brand new, 281,000 miles, regular oil and fluid changes, only issue changing wipers, headlights, taillights bulbs, changing out tires, the usual stuff with occasional dings on the panels door due to careless people not caring of other people's property.
Just got a used 2005 exl also- any maintenance recs? It has 180k miles
I am getting ready to buy the 2005 ex-l too, it is SUPER clean with 135,000 on it and I am paying (assuming it's not a rusty mess underneath) $6,000 for it. My god I hope it's a good deal and is reliable
I had a 2009 Honda Pilot bought it used with 176K miles and it was driving fine. I bought the VCM deactivation add on. Had no problems with it.
2012 Honda Pilot owner here. I brought it new and it currently has about 180k miles. No issues however I have maintained regular maintenance…timing belt, water pump, tuneup, alternator etc . Great suv

I have a 2016 and everything he said has come true on my Pilot. They suck!!
Actually was looking into the 2016 Honda Pilot EX-L😪
Exact same
I just bought a Pilot 2017 and I was worried!!
I owned 2005 Honda Pilot with over 250 k miles but never had any problems besides one time starter. And now I have 2011 Pilot but runs perfect 👍 🤓
I am looking at getting a Lexus, a family friend wants me to look at a Pilot. Thank you for your comment. 😊
I got 300k+ out of my 2005. Liked it so much I bought a 2014 and its been amazing.
2007 Honda Pilot 300,000 miles and still going, had issues with it but nothing mayor. Most annoying issue VCM, nasty vibration in the engine but works fine. There's a suppressor that works good in it but wears out quickly.
I have a 2017 Pilot EX-L and it's been rock solid since new. Love the vehicle.
Lucky you! But that year is notorious for Transmission problems.
Our 2009 Honda Pilot just died 3 weeks ago. It has 317,000+ miles on it. Now we are looking for another one.

I bought my 2009 pilot brand new. It’s been amazing! Only started giving me trouble this past year. Just ordered a 2023 pilot. Can’t wait!
how many miles? What kinda problems? Thanks!
yeah, what problems and how many miles?
Thank you for the info . I on a Honda pilot 2003 and I never have any problems but I think is time for a new one
I just bought a 2015 pilot with 82k miles used.. I hope I made a good reliability purchase . I plan on keeping up with reg maintenance .
I just bought a used 2017 Pilot elite with more miles than I wanted (100k) but love the car and I am just praying it does us well!! 🙏🏾
How much you paid

@@jessicahardrict3353that a lot for that many miles.1 yr ago I bought my 2020 exl with nav and res pachage(dvd tv ) with 25k for $30k
My 2013 pilot touring 4x4 has 205k miles and still run smoothly and no problems😊
How is it 6 months later, looking into it now is it really as bad as people say considering it’s a honda?
I have my 2017 honda pilot EXL four years ago 144,000 miles and have had no problems yet I definitely recommend it
You are one of the lucky ones! Transmission issues are very common in this year.
I have a 2010...love it ....runs great...never gave me a problem......only complaint would be the material used on the armrests....it wears fast
Have a Honda 2016. I agree with you on the paint issue. The roof paint just above the windshield presently needs to be repainted 😞

My 2013 Pilot has 280,000 miles and everything still works on it. Very reliable vehicle for me.
I've got the same year. Mine has 149,005 & it 's never had any problems yet. I love my Pilot! ❤️🙏
I dislike the newer vehicles due to much more electronics to go wrong.
strawberry milkshake???
@@enigmavariations3809 When the transmission fluid mixes with the coolant. Looks like a strawberry milkshake.
To solve the oil usage u need to change or clean the pcv valve and use a thinker grade oil when it gets to higher milage. Every pilot will last you over 200,000 miles if you give service and change timing belt on time. My 2011 has 250,000+

My 2006 Honda Pilot has over 300k miles. Going strong!
05 here. 290k Going strong. Love my Pilot. I researched and took months to find the one I wanted. Couldn't be happier.
How's it still going? I'm thinking about getting an 09 with 270k miles but feeling like that might be too high of mileage
My parents 2003 Honda pilot is still going strong after 22 years. Never had a major issue.
You nailed every one of them. I been looking for a pilot and noticed i just run to a few of them. Thank you
My work truck is a 2011 pilot. I’ve driven from
Ohio to Texas, Florida, New Jersey, and all the states in between.
I have however had the transmission rebuilt, and a new alternator, and do regular upkeep on the oil.
The alternator and the transmission went out on the same trip to Pittsburgh. Pennsylvania is cursed.
I got the 2008 honda pilot 4wd with 150,000 milles for free, Is worth to fix the transmmision ???

My wife and I love our 2020 Pilot Touring.
I am so impressed with my 04 that i have purchased another with 206k on it for thousand bucks and drove it hone 3 hours. Love my hondas
Thanks for your video Dave
I was my breath before I listened to your video, because I have a 2018 Pilot Elite.

2014 Pilot EX-L with 123K miles and going strong... No issues other than normal wear and tear stuff... Actually waiting for the new gen pilot to be released just in time for the 20th anniversary of the Pilot nameplate... Might upgrade then
What kind of mileage do you get?
@@lisastankavich3554 all depends on how I drive... Average 350-400 miles to the tank... I'm sure if I'm more careful, I could go over 400 miles per tank...
Thinking about buying a 2021 Honda pilot touring with 30 k miles does anybody own one and had problems.

How many miles did your elite have when these issues showed up, both would black out on you?

Maybe a lemon?
Total BS.
Same story with 2017. So much for Honda standing behind their products - total BS!
