In this masterclass, cello professor Leonid Gorokhov is accompanied by student cellist Ciàra Whitnall who will be practicing Grieg's Cello Sonata in A minor. Professor Leonid Gorokhov emphasizes the importance of presence and sound quality, particularly in sustaining the little notes and maintaining focus throughout the entire length of the bow, suggesting adjustments like changing the contact point closer to the bridge for a better sound. Professor Gorokhov advises Kara on technical aspects, such as keeping the left hand supple to aid the quality of the sound and the importance of not letting her second finger lock the fourth, which restricts movement. He discusses the emotional expression in the music, suggesting that certain sections should be played joyfully, and others with a pious, reflective quality, ensuring that musical phrases don't lose their compelling nature.
    What we learn:
    - This piece can be played very intensely,
    - One should avoid drops of intensity or sonority,
    - About releasing the bow and its timing,
    - The criteria of maintaining presence,
    - Having enough depth in one's stroke
