One of those songs you play on a late night when it is just you in the car no wife or girlfriend driving out on a dark Interstate or country road on hot summer night. Ted was also a member of a band called the Amboy Dukes they had hit in 1968 called Journey To The Center Of The Mind.

That's Derek St.Holmes, rhythm guitarist, on vocals. Ted usually backs up the vocals and on occasion sings lead. He doesn't have to sing for my money! His guitar work says it all. He's been around since the late sixties starting with The Amboy Dukes.

A few days ago this song came back into my life after a 40+ year absence. I had just graduated high school in '75 when this came out. But at the time, we were absolutely flooded with one incredible album after another, and since it didn't really get regular radio play at over 8 minutes, it slipped into my memory core, until the other night when I fell asleep with RUclips and my headphones on. I became conscious of this song and suddenly felt like I was tripping in the pitch black room. It took a little while to remember that I knew this song from decades past. Now I am obsessed with it. This Has to piece the epitome of Rock. It's definitely a masterpiece. The great thing is, Ted lived a clean life of no drugs or alcohol, so he is still very healthy at 74, and out on tour. Begging he comes back to Milwaukee. I would love to see him shred this live. So mesmerizing, so hypnotic, that bass line and the drums like a machine gun, just grabs you and takes you for the ride. Took me back to high school, and the weekend parties, I'll say that much!
BTW, that sound is a crash cymbal in reverse. Awesome effect.

Back in the day, it became understood that the "Stranglehold" was one that he had to put on his guitar to make it cooperate and play right. One night, when it was particularly ornery, according to the song, he smashed it, but fixed it back up. One can view it as a happy ending song between him and his favorite guitar after many years of struggle and strife.

Well, that is the interpretation of Stranglehold I heard first a long time ago. I just looked it up and other interpretations seem to possibly apply as well. I'll stick with the one that I know. Also, I might be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure I remember a short clip of an interview that I happed across on TV in which he admitted the song was actually about him and his baby, his guitar. Fun to hear it again, thanks. []:-)

He's being as man as manly solo's go in my book!
Ted Nugent only eats meat he kills himself and has never done any drug, alcohol.

There are two different types of solos. The one is the relatively short rapid fire screaming guitar that I think you referenced at the beginning, and then there's to solo guitar that takes the place of the vocals, which can last quite some time. Here, you need to focus on what the guitarist is doing and appreciate how the solo mixes in with the undertones of the song. (Your friend should have prepared you for one of the longest solos in rock history.)
