Let's keep it REAL! The American players are mad because the NBA watered down the league to attract Euro players. Instead of them going through the wringer like Toni Kukoc, Detlef Shremph, Stoackovich, Petrovich, and Manu did. They had to earn their stripes in a physical league. They are mad because the rules have changed to cater to those who had a fast pass to the NBA.

The reason they are because our kids have to go to school while europeans are practicing. If they fail, they can go back and still make money.
Another thing is that the NBA funds basketball without borders and a bunch of NBA development feeder systems outside the country. All we have is travel basketball.
So now, we are behind. And they are getting a push once they get to the NBA. The goal is a global game and phase out American black kids where possible.

American players got lazy in the money and hype. European players basketball is life, a way to get out of their socialist system and live like a king in America with all its freedoms. They been professional athletes since like grade school or something playing against grown men, that’s why America had to create the 92 Dream Team because our college team started losing to them. That was the beginning of the realization that American hoopers wasn’t good enough to beat European basketball teams. No high school or college over there, just 9th grade you play on pro teams 😮 and now that MJ and Kobe took it to international level of popularity, basketball is world wide

Let that been an American that didn’t close out that game yesterday and got beat by 40 let that been LeBron they’d be saying Mike jordan wouldn’t have let that happened. Look, I have no problem with these foreign players, give them love, give them MVP's, at the end of the day, it's about winning in the Finals. People can love Luka, Shai, Embiid, Giannis and Joker. But, between those 5, they have 2 chips. Let's not forget, just 2 years ago, it was Steph, before him, Giannis, before him, LeBron, before him, Kawhi, before him Steph, LeBron, Steph, Steph, Duncan, LeBron....The narrative may be the foreign players are the best, but in the champions club, most of them are still waiting outside or in line. This year, they could add Luka, but more than likely it'll be Anthony Edwards or Jason Tatum. Y'all don't get caught up in these narratives when you SEE the truth in front of you.

There needs to be a rethinking of how the minor league level of the NBA trains and develops players. College Basketball doesn't really prep these guys and that has been the case for a while. Look at Kyrie. He got into Duke on scholarship and DIDN'T play. He was hurt. Might have been the best thing for him. College basketball is not getting them ready for this next level. This is before talking about how uninteresting the NBA is becoming. I have always loved basketball and loved to play. Since 2022 I have not watched a full regular season game and since 2023 haven't watched the playoffs. This year will likely be the first time I don't watch the finals. The draw in viewership has never been lower, I know I'm not alone in this. I can only imagine what more casual fans than me (which I am now a casual which I wasn't just 5 years ago) think. Regular season almost unwatchable (hence in season tournament) and playoffs not as high stakes. NBA not sweating now, but once the TV rights deals are coming up for renewal they will.

Other countries have a more successful model for building up young players and teams with role players. America moved towards the AAU model: Play for "free", predatory boosters gifting shoes, teams being switched on whims and parents that pay and want return on their dime. If we had a more organized, structural, minor league system (instead of "college") we would be able to identify, and build talent within a set team/structure/system/cosch instead of identify and coddle it with boosters, sneaker companies where the player has leverage simply thru their services.

Honestly, I think its as simple as the fact that European players go pro at a younger age. The AAU/NCAA system allows for a good feeding system to create good to very good players. But if youve got two equally special players, and one is facing grown pros at 14, and the other is facing other kids... its not rocket science to figure who is going to develop faster and better.
You can see it in tennis, Ben Shelton is every bit as physically talented as any young European superstar, but he went pro at 21 and Carlos Alcaraz has been a pro since he was 15. No shit Alcaraz has a headstart that's going to be hard to overcome.

Here's something to consider: no foreign-born player comes to the US and the NBA and is immediately one of the elite players in the league from Day 1.
Yes, they came in with some baseline talent and fundamental skills from their native countries. However, they became sharpened, elevated, and ascended to the elite status, competing against America-born players, taught by American-born coaches, trainers, etc.. Therefore, America should get more credit for the development and success of these foreign-born players like Giannis, Joker, SGA, Sabonis, Siakam, Embiid, etc..
The US still produces the best basketball players by far. Foreign-born players have to come here to play against the best and make the most money.
Older America-born NBA players, after their careers are over in the NBA, can go to other countries and play and dominate easily well past their prime

It's xenophobic veiled nationalism (America's other pastime); just like when Stephen A made those comments about Shohei Ohtani. (Other than Don Cherry who hasn't had a national platform in years) the Canadian media doesn't go nearly as ape-ish over the fact the greatest current goalscorer (Mexican-American Auston Matthews) the best d-men (outside of Cale Makar) and the goalies by far are all American and more and more draft picks and top draft picks are coming from the NCAA and not the CHL Canadian junior hockey ranks.

That's textbook xenophobia. Don Cherry used to say the same thing about European, French Canadian, and American hockey players. It's a tired discourse.

@@shawncain882 That's the point though. The question is WHY is there this narrative among media/players/and coaches that instead of CELEBRATING that international and foreign-born players are dominating are SOURING towards it and the reason is xenophobia: LITERALLY the idea that it's a zero-sum game (i.e. players from elsewhere dominating is coming at the expense of American players). The evidence is the public discourse around these players vis-a-vis their American counterparts. And (as I mentioned with the Don Cherry and hockey example) it's neither new or unique. There's actually a really fascinating conversation to be had around this and the complexities and real legitimate grievances that surround it (as was explored/exposed during the recent Drake vs. Kendrick debate) about how black people from outside of the United States can be praised and elevated over African-Americans. That's literally what these conversations are about (and xenophobic nativism is as old as America and manifests itself in different forms from the No-Knowings in the 1850s to the discourse around immigrants from Eastern, Central, and Southern Europe in the early 20th century to today). If you actually open a book and study history and culture you'll see that this discourse around American vs. foreign born stars is just another verse in a long song that's been sung in America's history. That's the wider context.
