  • #liveinCostaRica #buyingausedcar #rentalproperty '🇨🇷 Buying a Used Car in Costa Rica 🚘 Living in Costa Rica 🏡 Rental Property in La Fortuna' If you're thinking about moving to Costa Rica, living in Costa Rica, at some point you will probably think about buying a car. Most expats (gringos) when they do think about purchasing a car, buying a car, usually end up buying a used car. Cars are expensive in Costa Rica. Double the Kelly Blue Book in the States and that's the price of used cars and new cars (roughly) are here in Costa Rica, which is why most opt for a reliable, good used car. And you can find a good used car in Costa Rica. Don't forget, I do have a reliable contact if you need to find and buy a good used car. Anyway, our friend, Cory, who has been coming to Costa Rica for like 13 years, just moved to Costa Rica a couple months ago. He wanted to use my contact for buying a used car but it was bad timing so he decided to venture out himself. This is his experience. It's neither good or bad, right or wrong, just him discussing his experience buing a used car here in Costa Rica. I asked him if he would like to share his experience and here it is.
Rental by the day in La Fortuna Costa Rica. Rental property by the week in La Fortuna Costa Rica. Long-Term rental property by the month in La Fortuna Costa Rica. Travel Costa Rica NOW's Mountain House at the base of the Arenal Volcano.
🇨🇷 Buying a Used Car in Costa Rica 🚘 Living in Costa Rica 🏡 Rental Property in La Fortuna
Also as it happens, we were up at DAngelo's, Mountain House, which he rents on AirBnB. So, like a good RUclipsr, we plugged his house if you're thinking about visitng or staying in Costa Rica for awhile and would like to rent. Usually he rents this house for 3-4 days at a time, sometimes by the week, and even less frequent, but still, by the month. Just depends. But it doesn't hurt to ask. The Mountain House is about 9 minutes by car from La Fortuna cental. So yes, we recommend you have a rental car, makes everything much easier.
There has never been a better time to move to Costa Rica, live in Costa Rica, start over in Costa Rica. You can live a simple, cheap life in Costa Rica. You can find a cheap rental property in Costa Rica by yourself. If you are thinking about making a life in Costa Rica, you need to do your homework/research.

Yes, it is funny. So, I thought I would be slick since there was a lot of background noises around. I needed the camera (microphone) closer. I put the wide-angle lense on so it would keep us both in the frame and still be close enough to pick-up our voices... well as you can see, it turned an already good-looking, buff, Cory into the HULK. lol *Always learning* This is Cory's experience of buying a used car in Costa Rica so this is not meant to be a 'how to' video. We definitely appreciate Cory sharing his experience.

I just bought red LandCruiser too for $10k! The only thing I would’ve added to Cory’s formula when purchasing a car is to bring a mechanic along... I’m glad I had my mechanic check out my Landy, ended up reducing the price of the truck and had it taken straight to my mechanic for the necessary repairs.

I loved watching/hearing this story. 2 things. When I was 16 I owned a Toyota Landcruiser Fj40 1969 and it was also red. I love it. Very simple and easy to work on and seriously tough as hell. The way the Costa Rican treated this guy was almost identical to what happened to me when I bought my first vehicle in Costa Rican. Great story.

Cool story.and experience! For anyone wondering about the $10,000 "money laundering" issue. Doing a transaction over 10k does not mean you're flagged for money laundering. Anything over $10,000 means the bank has to file a CTR (certified transaction report) for the IRS. Doing split transactions: $5000 wire and $5000 Paypal like Cory also doesn't mean he somehow avoided this report. If it came from the same bank account, it actually looks more suspicious than just 10k a wire. all at once. There is nothing illegal or suspicious about buying a car or doing a large transaction in a different country. It's all about IRS reporting. Anyone concerned about the 10k limit and being flagged for something is misinformed about banking regulations in the US. Very understandable, as it is not exactly easy information to come across. Great video as usual! Can't wait to come in December!

its always good to get some one who works at and can advise you on the side or is up to date knowledgeable in all facets of retive and marchamo requirements before you buy something in costa rica...all serial nos engine trax major components must MATCH.. or have a certified history of paperwork for replacement of major components... older cars like this one may have to have glass and emissions updates ..depending on the propina and the weather ...had one ...get ready for a kidney transplant ...i lived in the mountains when i had it.l..going up the steep 7mile mountain, to the house 8 mpg.. lawyers make major bucks for transferring a title in cr...on paper it looks complex ..so they charge you accordingly ..mostly tips and pencil whips to clerks and jerks..so if the rate is too cheap ..less than 400 theres most likely a problem.. costa rica is a buyer beware pairofdice..to protect you from frivolous litigation cars houses guns and literally anything that poses a threatening propensity should be considered part of a corporately structured entity.. ticos drive like most people potty ...with absolutely no control...its the one place they can feel like they have a modicum of freedom..its one of the most dangerous places in the world to drive.usually well covered up for tourist advertising..to get an accurate portrayal of the actual daily highway carnage get the newspaper online AL DIA....get a good lawyer ..you will have to pay accordingly ...every strata in any legal or functional process must get greased...a cheap smilin sam legal beagle will cost you way mucho monstro big time in the end ..whether its house car bike blah blah any kink in the chain of legal events and certifications will leave you bare booteed to anybody that wants it.all legal documents must be accomplished on official govt watermarked paper and forms..with a seal across the bottom...blah blah blah.....

Hi, check if the odometer of the car is in MPH or KPH. If it's in MPH it means it was imported from the US.
Some importers here are really shady and buy totaled or very high mileage cars from the US and they alter the odometer, fix them and sell them here.
If the car has a KPH only dash, it means it was bought here from a dealer and it's going to be in good shape.
Another thing, taxes for cars are 50% so everything is going to be more expensive than in the US.

Just a heads up - I just bought a motorcycle in Heredia and used Xoom for the money transfer (Xoom being a subsidiary of paypal). After jumping through some hoops to verify my identity and show where the money was coming from (with photocopies of my passport and pay stubs in the US), the transfer was easy and I am now set up in their system to make same day transfers up to $10,000 with a very minimal transfer fee.
