0:19 Tomiki Aikido and Judo often go hand in hand. Tomiki Shihan played a significant role in the development of the Kodokan Goshin Jutsu Kata. I have had the pleasure to attend afew UK based seminars with Satoh Tadayuki Shihan. He is really going back to the theory of Tomiki of applying waza when the grips in randori are broken. Satoh ans Shishida shihan were instrumental in re-establishing Toshu Randori back into competitive Aikido. Something that links into Tomiki Shihan original thoughts.

It is very interesting to see John Gage sensei with this techniques. He was a long time Nihon Jujutsu student of Sato shihan in Japan. Sato shihan made Nihon Jujutsu in the 1950er years. He mixed Kodokan Judo selfdefense with Tomiki Aikido and called it Nihon Jujutsu. Today John Gage sensei is the leader of a Nihon Jujutsu Federation. I practise about 25 years Nihon Jujutu too an met Gage sensei many times in Japan an several european countries. He is a very good technican an a friendly man.

It was through this system that I was first taught Judo & Aikido. The Tomiki Ryu systems in the USA I learned are good. From the Tomiki Ryu systems, I learned through seminars: the Steve Merritt system of Aikido, then Mumpower Aikido. In the USA it is the Tomiki Ryu system that is taught in most Judo dojo that offers Aikido.

When I heard about Tomiki Aikido, some weeks later I came across the organization you mention in the video (Rennaiscance Judo). It seems very interesting (Tomiki Aikido seems interesting too, it's a judo project after all!) and thank you for bringing more attention to it. I really wish you could make an interview with mr. Sato -given your research into judo and his background it would be fantastic!

    Chadi, try French-Italian Olympic fencing!
There you learn pronciples (distance and rhythm and tempo .. feeling of pressure in the fingers). Of course fencing doesn't employ the whole body (compare ii to kendo). Englisch (Olympic) boxing was developed from fencing (parallels may be seen in karate as empty hand fight however there is another "philosophy").

Agreed. With that said, I can appreciate the idea of empowering civilians to be strong and self reliant. Interestingly enough, Mitsuru Toyama (I have some of his original art work) softened his stance considerably when he was older. Interesting how they were both great friends with one of Japan’s most famous pacifists too. People are complicated…

Aikido has nothing to offer the reality of violence, Judo on the other hand is beautifully brutal so i cant see the reasons for mixing the two, apart from just liking the two i suppose.

You went from Aikido to Judo and to then BJJ. Are you aware that's moving down the ladder instead of up. You don't even recognize kanibasami when you see it 😂 Tomiki was sent by prof. Kano to train under O sensei. Hence, Tomiki Aikido was born.

The reason hate BJJ so much is because it's effective and hasn't had the martial aspect removed. No ridiculous rules, no strange restrictions on techniques and because of that. It is constantly hated on.

All of those are jujutsu. Even sumo is jujutsu. We should learn from each other, not have petty squabbles. Stop seeing martial arts styles as separate, it's all martial arts (...just different aspects of the same discipline.) Why do mixed martial artists bother training in boxing if muay thai has punches? Because boxers are specialists and their punches are better because they've spent more time on it. Generalists need specialists. There is no ladder, it's a web.

BJJ competitions are sport and yes they have had the martial aspect removed.
You cannot sit down and buttscoot and pulling guard is rarely an effective tool in a martial sense, in a controlled environment as a sport it’s fine but it’s far from a martial aspect.
I’m not hating on Jiujitsu just the way modern tournaments are run.
I’ll give an example if we were to keep the martial aspect alive in grappling then if you pull guard or try a flying armlock or jump on someone to wrap your legs around an opponent then the other participant should be able to slam you to the mat as that would be the most effective tool in those scenarios .

I look upon Aikido from a non judo/aikido background.
It generally isn't employed very well but could be utilised a lot better. The potential is there and I am aware that some aikido people can fight.

Strangely it's 99% useless and 1% extremely dangerous.
I assume you are a judoka. Try very carefully turning an ippon seionage inside out.
EG grab their R wrist with both hands but do a L throw while rotating their forearm as you turn in this would destroy an arm if done using any speed and power.
Exactly why these Aikijujutsu moves were removed by Kano.
