    Very pleasant half hour - thanks for doing a stitch-with-me. I work on 18-count Aida almost exclusively, with operating-room-brightness and usually magnification, too, so the idea of doing even 25-count one-over-one is a bit daunting. But I surely loved watching you do it, and learning about your techniques and preferences. I look forward to the next one no matter what you are working on. I will say, though, that (even though I am highly unlikely to ever do it) I would be interested in seeing up close the differences between 25-count one-over-one, 28-count one-over-one, 40 count one-over-one half stitches, etc. I know from your weekly video that you are working on several different fabric counts, and maybe it would be possible for a viewer to get an idea of the difference with your nice camera mount that you used for this video. In any case, whatever you are stitching on will be enjoyable to watch. Thanks!

      This is a great suggestion! It's hard to get a good focus close up during my regular videos, but this angle is much crisper. I'll include some examples of the different counts and stitch types in one of my next stitch with me videos! :)

    Thanks for keeping me company as I stitch. Iris is beautiful. I also play thread chicken, but use another needle that has a thread with a loop at the end to pull my stitch thread thru. It's like when you have a pull in a sweater and you have to fix it. It's hard to explain. I look forward to your videos.

    I, too, stitch in hand but I roll the fabric the other way, to the front, so that my hand doesn't touch the "stitching side" of it. I ain't washing my projects if I can help it so keeping the oil from the skin only on the back side is my goal, hahah. But yeah, no sewing method for me either, I couldn't deal with having to twist my wrist and counting my way to the right hole would also be too much of a bother - much easier and clearer to pretty much always go to the nearest hole...! Frogging is something I also want to avoid at any cost...
    Thanks for this SWM video, very relaxing to watch while I'm waiting for my meal to be ready 😊 I love this WIP of yours, always great to see your progress on it!

    I agree with you about hoops, in hand, rollers, sewing or stabbing. I think new stitchers might find it easiest to work with a hoop, then try other methods and see if you like something else better. I stitch different ways with different projects...the fabric count, the type of floss, and the style of the design dictate which methods and tools to use.
    I’m glad you did this stitch-with-me. I sat down to stitch and yours was the first one in my list of subscription videos to watch, so that was nice. It’s windy in the mtn passes tonight outside Sandy Eggo, so I needed some talking to drown it out. And you have a very calming voice...plus I’ve been watching your Iris progress almost since the beginning-it’s great to see it bloom!

    I loved watching you stitch and will have to go back through the older videos to watch the stitch-a-longs. You are so fast! I guess the new app is what is allowing that but even still. Wow! I'm using Good Notes and only working within the 100 stitch square at a time on my HAED. I'll probably continue where I am as my device probably isn't compatible but it sure was fun to watch you.
    Your back looks so much tidier too. I'm on a frame and, well, turning to the back is too hard. I'm just feeling to bury my thread while watching the top. It's working well on top but underneath, ugh. Maybe by the time I get to the end, I'll have found a better way. I'm doing the Stitch in Time shelf that you also have but you work all over and I'd be lost big time if I tried that. I do like getting to see the work finish as I go but started at the left top corner and there isn't too much to see but lots and lots of confetti. I look forward to my next page as it will be back at the top and should have some objects to stitch. I've been doing a page and the page that appears below as 2 fit in the space of my side bars and I can work all the way across till it's time to roll to below but I haven't gotten to stitch any of the ladies yet as the page keeps stopping before they appear, rats, but I am doing the Celtic Christmas Lady on another frame and I'm thrilled to have the upper half almost completed. I notice you like to do the faces too. Kindred sisters there I think. Thanks for sharing this today. What a happy valentine's gift to watch you stitching. Happy Valentines Day!

    • @StitchinMommy

      Thanks for sharing! I have heard that about using frames - you develop different habits just because it's harder to access the back of the piece. Don't worry about the back of Stitch in Time being messy - that piece has so many different colors!! Iris doesn't change colors nearly so often, so the back can be less thick and crazy. My back on Stitching Shelf where it's completed is crazy, too! :)

    It is so relaxing watching you stitch in hand. Inenvy your ability to have a lose tension so that you can stitch in hand. I stitch to tight so need my frames to keep the fabric from becoming to wonky 😅
    And I am the same as you, if I do stitch in hand (when fabric is to small for q-snaps and other reasons) I do the stabing method. IfI try the sewing method once in awhile, it does not last long because my stitches looks aweful 🙈
    Nice to see you again, take care ❤️🥰😊

      I agree! I have been "reprimanded" at times for stitching this way, but honestly, it's the method that is the most comfortable for me and this is just a hobby. It's supposed to be fun and relaxing! There are definitely certain circles who take this craft very seriously and feel like it needs to be done in a certain way to be "right". But I would rather just have fun making pretty pictures with thread than struggle along trying to follow arbitrary rules that might have benefits for archival quality.

    Just loved watching you stitch on QSI. Your stitches are always so uniform & perfect! Can you tell me please what thread would you choose on 22 count Aida. The kit says two over one, however I find it far too difficult for me as pulling the thread through really scrapes so I put it aside. Now listening to you, I’m thinking of trying one over one. Do you think in your experience it would be enough coverage when completed? As I feel you are definitely “the master “ in cross stitch in my eyes, thought I would run this past you for your expert opinion as I always listen to your every word 😇. Really love all your podcasts & am always very excited on tuesdays to know that I will have your podcast to watch. Hope you continue doing stitch with me videos as they are very interesting. Cheers 😊🥰😘❤️💕😍

    • @StitchinMommy
      @StitchinMommy  3 года назад

      Yes, you could definitely try using 1 strand on 22 count. You will probably notice some fabric show through on the darker colors, but when you stand back it won't be very noticeable, and it sounds like it would be a nicer stitching experience than having it be too thick with 2 strands.

    • @StitchinMommy
      @StitchinMommy  3 года назад +1

      Yes, if you're just branching out into an area with no stitching, there will need to be more focused counting to make sure you've got it correctly. Once you have some colors in place, adding in the rest is easier because there are more reference points.

  • @dianaphillips6725

    Sarah, in your opinion are samplers quicker to stitch than the usual patterns? And I love your channel and your presence on camera!

    • @StitchinMommy
      @StitchinMommy  3 года назад

      I don't stitch very many samplers, so I'm not sure I have an opinion about that. Compared to full coverage designs, samplers would be quicker because there some unstitched sections. But some samplers change colors frequently as well, and you can't carry your thread as much because of those unstitched areas, so some can sometimes take longer others.
      In general, I'm not sure what a "usual" pattern would look like. I stitch a wide variety of types of patterns, and often I don't like the types of designs that are common these days. :)

    Hi, I just found your channel and I have a question. On one video that a I watched last night you talked about stitching only half leg in some areas. I've never heard of that. Is that what the pattern called for or is this something you do. Just wondering when do you do it. It looked like it was also in the middle of regular cross stitches. Also, how do you get the pattern with colors on your tablet. I would love that idea! I hope you see this and are able to answer my questions. Your work is beautiful and your explanations are great.

    • @StitchinMommy
      @StitchinMommy  3 года назад

      Sometimes I will stitch my full coverage projects with only a half stitch, just for speed of stitching. When the design is solidly stitched (like this Iris pattern), and you are using enough strands to cover the square sufficiently (usually double the amount of strands you would use when stitching a full cross stitch), it will look normal when you stand back and observe the entire design.
      Sometimes, designs will call for certain elements to be done with a half stitch to add dimension and texture. Sometimes a pattern will chart the background as a half stitch so that it fades away a bit and the foreground pops more.
      I think I also mention in this video that when I'm stitching with solid colored floss, I will stitch the whole row of stitches with just a half stitch, but then I will come back and cross them all at the same time before moving on to the next row.
      Also, on my tablet, I am using Pattern Keeper. It is a wonderful cross stitching app that is a game-changer for stitching full coverage designs. if you tend to stitch full coverage designs, you should look into it. It allows you to search for symbols and it will highlight where they appear in the design, as well as show you what DMC number it is. Then, you can mark them off and it will color in the finished stitches in the same color as that thread. Only compatible PDF files work completely in the app, but you can now also import pictures of paper patterns if you just want to use it to highlight your stitches. Pictures of paper patterns cannot search for symbols, so I prefer to just keep using those patterns from the paper copy.
      I hope that helps!

      I found mine on Amazon. They're called a double sided thread organizer, since they're originally intended for spools of sewing thread. I have a second one for that purpose, too! :) amzn.to/3atrTvS It looks like it's currently out of stock, so probably wait till it comes back in stock, then the price will go down.

    Do you like to stitch without a frame better than with one? Is the tightness of the stitches the same as if it were stitched with a frame? Thank you luv your videos.

    • @StitchinMommy
      @StitchinMommy  3 года назад

      I always stitch like this, with the fabric rolled up in my hand. It's just how I learned and now stitching with a frame is very cumbersome and awkward for me. Stitching in hand is not as taut as it would be in a frame, so you do need to be careful with your tension. I have developed a loose tension because I use this method, but if you normally have a tighter tension, you may need to stick with frames or your stitches wouldn't look as nice.

    Thank you for this SWM. I still have trouble with my one strand slipping under a vertical thread unless I change the way I stitch the leg. You didn't seem to have any trouble with your stitches? 🤗

      My tension tends to be quite loose, so that definitely helps me not have as much trouble with my thread slipping. A tip for stitchers who have trouble with that is to stitch one stitch at a time, instead of stitching a half stitch down the row and coming back to complete the stitches.

    Wondering what you do with the needle after you do a stitch you move back to the stitch before and what do you do with the needle with that stitch before? Just curious. I love to watch you stitch.

    • @StitchinMommy
      @StitchinMommy  3 года назад

      I'm not sure I completely understand your question. I usually just stick the needle into the next hole where it needs to go and continue stitching. Sometimes, I'll poke the needle into the next hole and leave it there while I mark off stitches on Pattern Keeper, then I'll pick up stitching where I left off. Also, if I'm in between sections and I'm not sure where I'll be going next, I either poke it randomly into the fabric or set it on my needleminder until I need it again.

    Hi Sarah I would like to see your butterfly on perforated paper because I'm intimidated to try them because of the beading. I'm starting my second HAED soon but on 32 ct what would be your stitch recommendation. Would you still stitch 1 thread over 1 in full cross? I do enjoy stitch with me videos.

    • @StitchinMommy
      @StitchinMommy  3 года назад

      I've put my Mill Hill piece on the list of things to include in stitch with me videos!
      32 count fabric is kind of tricky for full coverage pieces. I have started the Cross Stitch Studio's mystery SAL on 32ct with a 1 over 1 half stitch, but the coverage is pretty light. If your design has a lot of dark colors, you might not be happy with the coverage. I have seen some people use a 1 over 1 full cross on 32 ct, but I would think it would get pretty tight if there is a lot of confetti. I stitched my Temperature Garden 1 over 1 full crosses on 32ct, but there was a lot of white space to let the stitches breathe. If your design has a small to medium amount of confetti, you could be okay with 1 over 1 full crosses on 32ct.

    Your threads are so long, how do you keep them from going fuzzy on you?
    Does the hand holding the fabric ever get tired?
    I also thought it was interesting how you pull the thread down with your thumb (I use my pinky).

    • @StitchinMommy
      @StitchinMommy  3 года назад

      Interesting - the pinky vs thumb thing is definitely one of those things that is so involuntary that I don't even know how I'm doing it. It's interesting how everyone's techniques end up slightly different from each other. :)
      I tend to use longish lengths when I can, just to reduce the amount of times I need to rethread my needle. During this video, I didn't talk through it, but I used a length that I had precut to 48", then cut it in half to be 24". If I was going to be using a 2 strand loop start, I would have kept the 48" length and just folded it over. I will use 1 yard lengths of fancy floss straight off of the card without cutting them down, but sometimes I find that I need to cut them in half if I'm stitching a dense section of over 1 stitches because it will pass through the fabric too many times.
      Some tips to help keep the thread from getting fuzzy - make sure your needle matches your fabric type & number of threads. I like to use size 28 for over one stitching, size 26 for 2 strands over 2 on 32ct or on 18ct Aida, and size 24 on 14ct. If the eye of your needle is a bit larger than the amount of threads you're using, it reduces the friction when it passes through the fabric by opening up the hole more. I also start out with a pretty long tail, then gradually shorten it as I stitch - this will help minimize the wear and tear on a particular section of thread. Some brands and types of thread do start to get fuzzy at the end, so for those types of threads, I do shorten the lengths. DMC and most cotton & silk floss can be pretty long, but metallics and Wisper, etc. I will use around 12" lengths and a size 24 needle to keep them from shredding and disintegrating.

    How are you getting your pattern on your iPad?

    • @dianamh5438
      @dianamh5438 3 года назад

      If I recall correctly, she has a Kindle Fire. It's pretty easy to google how to get "Google Play" on your Kindle and then download Pattern Keeper. I've done it with my Kindle Fire.

    The App that you use to read the pattern is for Android or Ipad?

    • @StitchinMommy
      @StitchinMommy  3 года назад +1

      This app is Pattern Keeper, and it is only formatted for Android at the moment. I didn't have an Android device, so I got a Kindle Fire (which is what you see in this video) and installed the Google Play Store onto that in order to get Pattern Keeper on a relatively inexpensive device. It works great!

    Where doing find pattern keeper?

    • @StitchinMommy
      @StitchinMommy  3 года назад

      Pattern Keeper is an app that you can find on the Google Play store - usually on Android devices. I have installed Google Play on my Kindle Fire in order to use Pattern Keeper, but you cannot find it on a Apple device. When using the app, certain PDF patterns are formatted to allow the app to see the symbols. So you can choose which symbol you want to stitch, and it will show you what color it is and highlight all the places where that symbol occurs. This is very helpful for full coverage stitching! The app now has some partial abilities to import paper patterns and non-compatible PDF patterns, but since those types of patterns can't use the features that search for and highlight specific symbols, I still just use my paper copies for those types of patterns.
