As an Irishman I can confirm that they do indeed think this. I'm also often pleased to learn quite frequently from British people that one of them wrote "Dracula", even though it was written by an Irishman. They love claiming shit. As the song goes, "Brittania Waives The Rules" 😉

@@ULTRAWIDE. I am British, and I found the line about "no one else was trying" falls flat as a joke because it so obviously isn't true. Al Murray is well versed in history, and he lets it shine through in his character sometimes (disguised as "pub quiz" knowlege) so you'd think the Pub Landlord would be aware of the Soviet space program.

    • @ste887
      @ste887 9 месяцев назад +2

@leonwiddicombe8947 well i found a interesting thing when i did a little poll on a server with a mix of brits and americans on it. i simply asked 'in a sitcom would you be comfortable being the butt of the jokes for a whole episode, or would you prefer to be the one dishing out the jokes?'
      American:
      receive: 21%
      give: 79%
      brits
      receive: 66%
      give: 34%
I feel part of that might just be that brits are happy to laugh at themselves, justifying being the butt of jokes by 'well, if i can laugh at myself, then everyone's laughing' that and there's been some great comedy characters that have been the butt of jokes. Richard Richard from bottom comes to mind as a character who is all flaw, (virgin, socially awkward, pretty much the prototype incel 'i bought you a Coca-Cola in good faith, and did you say 'no thank you I'm a lesbian, i want my 55p back!'' feels like he's being constantly set up for a fall) but he was played by Rik Mayall, who often played the prat in slapstick projects. same also with Hugh Laurie, he's not afraid to act silly and have someone tease him for it. also Craig Charles is a character that is pretty much all flaw and is the butt of the majority of the jokes, though in fairness in red dwarf everyone is the butt of jokes And you just don't really see that level of a flawed character in American sitcoms.
actually the story that comes to mind, when 'the young ones' was trailed in America a studio execs comment was "so which one is the hero? who is the audience meant to see themselves as?" now if you've seen the young ones, none of them are good people, but while there isn't a hero to self insert yourself into, you will see parts of your personality and behaviours in all of the characters.
Similar story with the American adaptation of red dwarf, believe the first episode is on RUclips, they tried to make lister a likeable, hip sort of guy, vs the cold curry and beer with a stubbed out ciggie drinking space bum. (always reminds me of the episode where they go to the chamber of justice and lister is asked 'occupation?' and the answer is 'erm....errrrm??.....bum!!' always gets a giggle)

that's the thing I've found as a brit with my American friends. until they got a feel for British humour, I had to very much walk on eggshells around them, till it finally clicked with them. I get tone can be hard to work out over text, but the sticky out tongue smiley should probably have been a hint for 'oh hang on, brits insult each other cos they like each other, if he was being really nice to me, that's cos he doesn't like me' and as soon as I managed to cross that bridge with them, things got much smoother. slowly trying to teach them wit and sarcasm to a British level. and bless him he tries, but he cant quite get the British art of obscure swearwords, and using random nouns and verbs to describe other things. ie: drunk - "look at that guy, he's absolutely trolleyed" but were getting there. not quite gonna blow his Iowan brain by teaching him Yorkshire slang too, well, not just yet
and to make my point with the vid, you could sort of see how some of the guys felt very uncomfortable with a accidental slightly spicy remark. whereas yeah, i say the worst things to my friend, he says the worst things back to me, we all laugh, everyone has fun (though its always fun when someone tries to stick up for him, cos I'm a white guy apparently abusing a south african mixed race guy, must be racist) and junior just tells them to mind there own business and calls me whatever slur comes to mind to make his point as I chuckle. though it is always a chuckle when someone new joins the group chat, hasnt quite got a feel for the room and one of the guys asks the Asian guy in the group 'so when are they actually deporting you ass?' and eventually people get a feel for the vibe and join in teasing each other. if everyone gets insulted, the no one has been. least that's how our group of friends sees it.
but as Al says, two countries separated by a common language, but feel its deeper than that with cultural stuff. but its absolutely not gonna stop the yanks teasing the brits over things and vice versa (jus can we move on from, haha uk has no guns (it does) and haha dead school kids in America, cos it started wearing thin around the 2000s)

Al Murray plays a character of the pub landlord. hence the bar and drinking. He has a PHD in history and started his career entertaining his fellow students. He roasts every nation and especially ourselves. His best video is "How global finance works" and he rips into germans, japanese and both coasts of the US. Its about 20 minutes long but you will have sore cheeks from laughing and he roasts our finance sector the worst and whats worrying is not from the truth. Some of his history based sketches are astonishing and they are 100% accurate. The sketch "we have defeated every country at war" is staggering both funny and is reasoning is brilliant even if it pushes the envelope a lot.

You have to understand thar this almost universal style of British humour is called "banter". This is where we mildly mock our friends, and our closest friends the most. Our friends do the same to us. If you don't "get the joke", I agree it can sound as if we Brits are being deliberately offensive.

Truth is, the Brits enjoy taking the p, banter, etc often as a mark of respect, of similarity. Especially if it is reciprocal. We do not seriously look down of anyone apart from the French.

We Brits are the first to criticise ourselves, so other nations doing it falls a bit flat. Weve always been self deprecating, weve always muddled through. We muddled through and conquered a large area of the globe. We muddled through and invented most of the worlds technology and are still world class innovators. We are not fussed if others laugh. It's Ok, we've got laurels to sit on. 😂

Lads, much of Al Murray’s Witt has seemingly gone over your heads, listen to it a few times and your follow the subtle Witt. As others have said, humorous sarcasm, innuendo and having the piss taken out of you is part of everyday British ways. Usually it’s a mark of endearment not intended for insults. Al is never insulting, just gets you to laugh at yourselves…..enjoy his tapes, try Dave Alan, an Irish comedian who is so subtle it’s beyond belief…..

Forget the Alomo. Also forget prohibition. Al Murray is portraying a pub landlord in these comedic acts. In the past, British - especially English publicans/landlords were typically as Al is pretending to be. That's why he has a bar with beer taps etc.... I watched a couple of Freddie Mercury USA reactions and because he had a lonesome bottle of beer on top of his paino, that's all most of the reactors could focus on. Graham Norton supplies his numerous guests with the alcoholic beverage of their choice, as do a few other British comedians. I think USA folk are stigmatised because they can fight on the front line in a war at sixteen or maybe eighteen years old, but can't legally purchase, or drink alcohol until they are twenty one.
