      My favorite movie line "I'm the bombardier. I'm the bombardier,"
      Since 1970. I'm still saying that when something happens that makes no sense at all. Alan Arkin, frozen in time, sitting in the cockpit of a plane, pops up in my head, and we are both repeating that line.😂

    This was one of those awards given to recognize an old actor for a long body of work. Arkin gave several Oscar-nominated performances, beginning in the 1960s, let alone on Broadway. This was one of those ‘We remember all the great performances you’ve given’ Oscars. Totally legit, happens all the time.

      Yeah, 4 nominations, 1 win? It should be 5 wins. The guy is a master class unto himself. Wait Until Dark, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, The In-Laws, Edward Scissorhands (he made my mouth water, he had me laughing so hard in that theater I almost had to step out), So, I Married An Axe Murderer. He loves his craft and will take any part without ego, the mark of a true artist. So underappreciated.

    I'm very surprised about the comments here. I think Arkin totally deserved it. He stole the show in Little Miss Sunshine and showed a very wide range of facial expression and voice modulation to achieve the best comedic/touching atmosphere for his role. Also the film was award-worthy, a very little independent and clever comedy. I can't believe people consider Murphy and Whalberg's performances to be better and, in general, to be better actors. Go and watch some old film by Arkin, he's such a damn great actor.

Alan Arkin reallyl gives a great performance in the Movie. But I still agree with you- Jackie EArle Haley still gives an even greater Performance for a Character that many would see as Despicable. He gives true Humanity to this very sick, damaged character.

Although the book gives more information on the characters, in many ways- the Film is much better than the book. The character that Jackie EArle Galey plays is without giving away the ending is much more sympathetic in the MOvie and the Ending of the Movie, i much, much better- a real, wonderful spiritual ending about Forgiveness.

    Not the strongest line-up in this category. I would pick Jackie Earle Haley, but he wouldn't be one of the strongest winners either. I preferred Carell's performance in Little Miss Sunshine to Arkin's (I think Arkin was good, quite funny, but when I knew that he wouldn't appear on screen anymore I thought: "And that's what he won the Oscar for?"). And how did Wahlberg get nominated over Nicholson? Did Nicholson campaign in leading?

    Rest in Peace, Mr. Arkin. He was a formidable talent. I will always remember the first film I saw him in, “The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming!” back in 1966. His dramatic role in “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter” is a must see for all his fans. I’m glad he was finally given the recognition & honors he so richly deserved.

    I thought Blanchett was fantastic in The Aviator, and I thought Kate Winslet's performance in The Reader was her best yet. But you are right anyway, the academy does in fact look back. I wouldn't say they "make up" for something, but having been nominated before or overlooked definitely adds to your chances.

    If it wasn't for promoting Norbit in the same month as the Oscars, I think Eddie Murphy would of definitely won an oscar. He deserved to win.

    • @VIDEOSTOREREVIEW
      @VIDEOSTOREREVIEW 4 года назад +7

      I'm not so sure that whole NORBIT story was the real reason for his loss. Of course, Eddie Murphy is a fantastic actor (and often overlooked by awards), but DREAMGIRLS wasn't a strong film, and it wasn't nominated for Best Picture; this usually factors strongly. If you look at the nominations in any given year, an actor wins if their respective film is also up for major awards. It does sometimes go to actors for performances that are seen as 'honourary wins'; for example Christoper Plummer (BEGINNGERS), Heath Ledger (THE DARK KNIGHT), George Clooney (SYRIANA; I believe this was a conciliation win for his multiple nominations that year for GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK). You can also see a similarity between this loss and Sylvester Stallone's in 2016, when he was also considered the favourite to win, but lost to Mark Rylance. BRIDGE OF SPIES was nominated for Best Picture, and Stallone, like Murphy, wasn't considered by The Academy as worthy of an honourary type win at the stage in their career.

      Or the fact that Dreamgirls wasnt that well received. Little Miss Sunshine was a critics favoured movie and a Best Picture nominee. That helped tip the scale over..

    Great actor, great clip - and perfect example of what Oscar telecasts get so wrong so often : instead of the Rachel Weisz intro, they should have shown clips from the nominated performances. That might have encouraged the television viewing audience to actually go see a movie !
