  • Quake is a first-person shooter video game, developed by id Software and published by GT Interactive in 1996. It is the first game in the Quake series.[2] In the game, players must find their way through various maze-like, medieval environments while battling a variety of monsters using a wide array of weapons.

"It's pretty much a straight PC port which is disappointing." 0_o. That's a dream come true for any games being ported over from the PC, as long as the framerate is stable.

Yeah that’s true but you got to consider that the pc version had already been out for years by this point and to get a straight port with nothing much else added like maps etc was a let down. Also no 4 players. Thankfully they did a great job with quake 2 though which is awesome

For anyone thinking about playing this on N64, I HIGHLY recommend:
Go to video settings, turn "Filter" to off. This helps sharpen up the terrible blurry textures a bit.
And good lord the stock controls, change them.. I prefer the following:
    C UP: Move Forward
    C DOWN: Backstep
C Left and Righ: Strafe left and right
    Right Shoulder: Jump
D Pad Left and Right: Next/Prev Weapon
    B: Button Look
    A: Center View
    Z: Shoot
    This is much better!

Trent Reznor's PC soundtrack was atmospheric, eeire, with sound effects and minor noises. It didn't subtract from the game at all and added to the haunting atmosphere. The only song that was rock was the menu music.

Back in 1998, PCs that could run quake weren't the most advanced ones at all. A K6-2 or a celeron (or even a fast pentium mmx since they were still sold at that time) could run it smoothly. However, even cheap PCs were more expensive that what we have nowadays, but it wasn't 2000$ either

Quake along with Duke Nukem 3D was one of the first PC games I every played, when my family got our first PC in 1997, it blew me away. I'd already played both Wolfenstein and Doom on the Atari Jaguar. Quake was like nothing I'd ever seen before and I even got a chance to play it on a VR head set while I was working in Oldham Collage's IT department for work experience. Still to this day a really great game.

Despite some of the flaws of this port of Quake, I'm glad that they kept an ambient soundtrack for the ports. Even with this soundtrack composed by Aubrey Hodges, the game still retains its dark, grim atmosphere. In a sense, this port amplifies the creepiness with its colored lighting. Considering that this ports soundtrack has demonic growls, unholy winds, haunted orchestras, ghostly warping noises, and discomforting vocalizations in it... have fun playing this in the dark.

I remember saving up and paying full price for Quake 64 back in the day, and was surprised by the muddy graphics. It wasn't until recently with the Quake 64 addon remaster that it was apparent that the texture resolution had in fact been significantly reduced. Recently played thru the entire Quake 64 with the remaster, and it's just as underwhelming as I remembered, with the lower level count, but at least it had nice colored lighting.

I've seen people play this game YEARS ago on PC and I never knew the name of it, but I always remembered the dark gloomy setting, the chainsaw enemy, and you wielding an axe. Unless I'm wrong....I alwayss wondered what the hell game was that!? Lol Now I own this for the 64 and made the connection... I still enjoy it for Nintendo's system, well the 1player part of it... I only ever played the 2 player death match with my friend once I believe, a while ago. It was somewhat memorable to me because we were stoned and it consisted of me chasing him around some dungeon swinging the axe like a madman lol and it was rather hilarious. Aside from that, I still haven't beaten the single player yet but I work on it from time to time. This game is still creeps me out sometimes when I play it alone lol It's scary and ambient, a little too punishing sometimes but fun.

Don't know why you'd expect the N64 version of Quake to look close to the PC version 2 years after Quake originally released. The N64 may have been using the latest hardware for consoles at the time, but it was essentially using hardware from 1995.
Quake was the game that forced everyone to upgrade to the latest PC tech in 1996, from CPU to GFX Cards to RAM, so hardware wise, the N64 was stuck with older hardware that couldn't be upgraded from '94-'95 standards. I guess Midway could've used the expansion pak, but that wasn't released until '98, so there was no way they could've designed Quake N64 with that in mind. That's the only way I could see them implementing higher resolutions like 640x480.
But then it'd be running at a quarter or even half the FPS, and I don't think anyone would want that...

You’re right about everything EXCEPT you are underestimating the value of local multiplayer in Quake. My friends and I used to carry our desktop PC’s to each other’s houses every few weeks for LAN parties, so we were already fans of Quake multiplayer. Finally being able to just turn on the game and play with a friend without having a second computer nearby was excellent. Yes Goldeneye was better in almost every way, but Quake still provided a unique and fun multiplayer experience for those of use who already loved the game.

The only differences I can see between PC Quake and Quake 64 is that the id Tech 2 (aka Quake engine) engine on the Nintendo 64, much like Doom on the Playstation, has been modified to have colored lighting, so we get shades of blue, green, purple, or red lighting in most levels unlike in PC Quake where the lighting was pretty much white or slight shades of yellow. The game obviously lacks decent multiplayer and graphics, as the multiplayer was just a 2-player deathmatch, which sucks. It would have been awesome to play co-op with your buddy listening to the spooky ambience, but alas, they took the 6 months to program in only one multiplayer mode which took enough time that the Quake engine was beginning to show its age. As for the graphics, I remember first playing Quake 64 on my emulator, and I couldn't help but feel as though the game looked more bland because of the blurry textures. The game made up for it with the colored lighting and obviously well done ambient soundtrack composed by Aubrey Hodges, in my opinion.

It's easy to understand why console players don't see how amazing this game was, but for PC gamers, this was the gold standard of gaming at the time - nothing topped it graphically. It was a good benchmark about whether it was time to upgrade your PC or not lol.

Sword False, as Quake 64 released after GLQuake was released which sported transparent water, bilinear or trilinear filtering, and very subtle color lighting. It also had dynamic shadows, circle particle effects, and better dynamic lighting (Orange ball lighting when you shoot is also present). The textures are also less blurry.

DjOliScrewed man those custom mods and
that xman mod was so good that because
of that i consider the original quake to be much more entertaining to play mods for then any other shooter just like with doom!
the mod community for both the original doom and quake
are still alive and are still making better classic wads and mods for both games and i also remember playing the old school batman wad file and enjoying it so in my opinion both games have such a strong spirit and feel to them so i would say doom and quake ftw because both are still alive thanks to their fans and agree with you there man!

As someone who owned pretty much every FPS game on the N64 I remember being really underwhelmed by this game. I also think they really screwed up the lighting, at the time magazines were talking about how technically impressive it was but it just looked really ugly and yellow(really, really yellow), when you compared it to their previous port of Doom you have to wonder what went wrong.
