This is exactly why The Hero of Time is my favourite hero. He went through so much for people who didn't like him and/or would never remember him. He was forced against impossible odds as a child and had to tackle the perils of his adult world without the knowledge or life experience of one his age. After becoming a hero, he was allowed to experience the childhood he missed. His real reward? Losing the only friend he ever knew. Let's not even mention the trauma that is Majora's Mask. OOT was my first Zelda game and it introduced me to a great series. Despite some of the other games being polished, having better items/dungeons/game mechanics, etc., nothing sticks in my memory as well as The Hero of Time himself.
Personally I feel as if the Hero of time is still tragic, but maybe not as tragic as people make him out to be. With the 7 years returned to him, he was able to make his own choices, forge his own path. Something he could never do before. And he could meet the people he wanted to and actually get to know them for more than just a quest. Majoras Mask confirms he was friends with Zelda (flashback) and with Malon (having Epona) and Twilight Princess confirms he still did some heroic deeds (mentioned as ancient hero), so this Link certainly wasn't alone. The Hero's Shade also seems very mature, far more than that of a young man, which to me hints at that he lived quite long. Sure he would never be remembered for what he really went through, but I don't think tragedy and dying with regret rules out having at least some happiness in life. Personally I liked that you didn't go the path of having Link die young, like most other theorists do. And your ending was very sweet! Them all reuniting.
Shade Link's regrets are about him not passing down his skills to his offspring and keeping his legacy alive. The not being remembered bit was a red hearing. At least he had a bloodline and his descendant rose to the occasion which is more than I can say for other Links.

Wow, I never realized just how much Link sacrifices, all for everyone else's benefit.
People wonder why Oot is everyone's favorite, but it's exactly this, the subliminal tragedy of the entire story, that makes this story legendary.
