Dustin, I just love your lens reviews. I’ve never commented before, but thank you for doing them. I think I’ll stay put with my “legacy” Tamron 28-75 workhorse. :)
Just got around to watching this... great review! I recently sold my G1 version of the lens because of the "nervous" quality of the bokeh and replaced it with the Sigma 24-70 DG DN. This is tempting, because as great as the Sigma is I prefer the handling and size of the Tamron. Thanks for the review!
Once again Dustin, your review is the best of the many in this focal length that i've seen. I'm not sure if i'll go with either of these lenses but I really like your no nonsense, purely about the topic review style. I'll be sure to update if you help me lighten my wallet by another chunk this year! My a9 purchase, largely based on your recommendation is working out well for me so far! I've been attending many sporting type events so far, with more being planned all the time and I am starting to generate a return, and more importantly, get my name out there! I would not have in good conscience been able to do this with my a7rii! I have the kit 28-70 lens, but have a night concert event, and the prospect of indoor winter sports and feel a 2.8 constant aperture will be the difference maker in the long run... Cheers!
Had the G1 for about a year, got it second hand. Sold it about a week ago for the G2 and I gotta say, just having the ability to make the MF ring double as an aperture ring is worth it above anything else. Heres to hoping Tamron continues to make not only the G2 have more functionality but future lenses from them be even better offerings than they already are.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Which is incredible, the G1 is a really solid lens. Only issue I ever had was the AF being a little hit or miss. Props to Tamron for making something solid even better.
Great review. Never seen anyone mention it but I would have liked the zoom ring to have been brought a bit closer to the body. If the lens hood is in the storage position rather than frontally mounted, it gets in the way to clash with fingers when zooming.
One thing to note: when using the Tamron Lens Utility to allow for linear MF control on the G2, the software does not indicate how much throw is programmed. Got the official word this week that the linear throw for the A063 is 360°. So: a full turn of the barrel becomes the standard rack from MOD to infinity. Unfortunately the G2 architecture does not have the sophistication of the 35-150 f/2-2.8, which allows the user to choose between 90°, 180°, 270°, and 360° for their desired rack... but still! Allowing a by wire VXD motor to act mechanical is a game changer, either way.
Thanks Dustin. I use this lens to shoot volleyball from close up around the court with an a7iii. Every millisecond counts in terms of focusing. I shoot 10 FPS. You comment that there is a 100% improvement from near to infinity. My interest is how much faster focus for my typical shot. I usually sit at the mid court and shots would vary from close fully zoomed. There's always a bit of lag between depressing the shutter and the first shot. Will this lens reduce that significantly or is that lag just inherent delay in initiating the shot. Thanks!
Thank you for this G1 vs G2 lenses comparison. As I am looking into switching back to full frame system I am pretty sure the Sony A7IV body would be my pick; however, also looking into pricing vs image quality on lenses. I been away from camera development for few years now and was surprised how many manufactures are making high image quality lenses for the Sony E-Mount at much affordable pricing. Almost set my mind on a used G1 lens; however, after watching this video I am going to get the G2. Thanks again for making this video.
Thank you very much for this concise Information, Dustin. I like your reviews and often look at them. I am waiting for your review of the the new Samyang 24-70 and then I will buy the one that match my needs best...
Clearly another excellent new release from Tamron. As a Canon user, have had and obtain all the imaging quality needed from my 24-70 2.8 (non IS). For my use, the 24mm focal point is the most frequently used. Clearly others will differ. This lens provides a rather compelling alternative to the Canon offerings given the almost poisonously expensive price points of the recent releases. That said, if were forced into the market for a lens of this general focal length, I would also need to purchase a, say, a 24mm or similarly wider prime to accompany this lens.
Hey! Great review like always. I've been wondering whether I should get the G2 instead of the Sony 85mm 1.8. I already have a 35mm 1.4 and I wanted to get a lens with more reach. Do you think that it can compete with the prime on the telephoto end? Thanks!
Input from a random commenter: I'd argue that it would make more sense to pair an 85mm prime (Samyang's 85mm 1.4 is outstanding value for money) or the 70-180 if you already own a 35mm 1.4 and do not plan to sell it. If you are using a camera with a decent megapixel count, a sharp 35mm 1.4 can easily crop to ~55-60mm in a pinch and beyond that, a 70-180 or 85mm prime makes more sense than a zoom going from 28-75
My two cents: I own the Sony 28mm/f2.0 prime, the Tamron 28-75mm(legacy model) & the Sony 85mm/f1.8. Not only do I *love* the 85mm/f1.8 specifically, but in general I'd argue that you get so much more out from fast prime lens apertures at 85mm than you do wide. Wide shots are almost always intended to emphasize the environment anyway, such that f2.8 tends to offer plenty of de-focus, whereas at 85mm, I find the prime really adds value. So my vote for you would be to *replace* the 35mm with the 28-75 zoom, and buy the 85!
Im.switching over to sony, I pre-ordered the a74 but still haven't bought a lens. How do you think this lens compares to the sigma 24-70 2.8? Which would you recommend, without price as a factor?
Hey! I just wanted to point out that in Mr. Abbott's excellent review of the Sigma 28-70, he does a detailed image comparison with the older Tamron 28-70. In it he uses the same chart and criteria that he uses in this review. If you watch the two reviews together I think you can bridge the gap between them. I did this myself and it seemed to me that the the improvements in the image quality in this new Tamron pushed it ahead of the Sigma. In the original comparison both had strengths and weaknesses that made them seem different but perhaps equal. But again, after watching both reviews back to back I would put the new Tamron ahead. Like you I would still love to see a true back to back. Hope this was helpful. Thanks again Mr. Abbott for all the excellent reviews.
Thanks for the review. I'm on a quite tight budget and already extended my lens budget from $300 to $500 since found a mint G1 28-75mm for $500 locally. I wish that G2 was in my budget but I just can't spend another $200-$300 at this point. Would you say that the G1 is still a solid investment at $500 in 2023?
