Just the video I needed to see, just got my Tacoma and have been looking for a cover and the amount of choices has been overwhelming. Appreciate the concise and informative review.
I had many mods that I installed pretty much right after I got my truck, and one of those was a tonneau cover. I wanted one that was hard cover for security reasons, but I did not want the three folds to show. I finally found one that was hard cover, with three folds, but the whole thing was covered in vinyl, looking pretty much like yours, except it is flat. As you said, it DEFINITELY increases your gas mileage and will indeed pay for itself on a long trip, as you did when you drove it cross country. Way back in 2005, when I still have my 1996 Tacoma 4-cyl Xtracab, I was going to drive across country and knew it would greatly help gas mileage, so I managed to find at that time, a tonneau cover that utilized a zip enclosure, like on a ziplock bag. Not exactly secure, but it served the purpose I had at the time. I only paid $175 out the door for it, no tax and free shipping, and I was getting between 28-30MPG for most of the trip, which I thought was dang good and it certainly paid for the tonneau cover in gas savings!
I've just put a similar (Tyger brand via Amazon) tri-fold soft tonneau cover onto my '17 Tacoma Off-Road (same color as yours). I didn't realize until a few days ago you had one of these covers (I didn't notice your video on this until ~7/11/21). I must say, your video convinced me to get one of these. As someone else here mentioned, the brand you bought (TrailFX) was now well-over $300 on its website. I got the Tyger from Amazon for less than $250, delivered. As you said, perhaps they're all built in the same factory anyway, although my bed-rail-brackets are a different design from yours. I had a hard bed cover on my 2nd pickup truck (maybe 18 years ago) but didn't get around until yesterday in getting this cover until when it was delivered yesterday. The tri-fold hard covers all seemed to be ~$1100 and I just didn't want to spend that much right now. Thanks for your video from ~a year ago on this. Anybody shopping online/Amazon just needs to ensure they get a tonneau kit packaged exactly for their model of truck which ensures they kit the right brackets for their truck.
I went with a hard cover myself a little paranoid about my stuff getting taken especially if I'm away from my truck for long periods and know I've got some worth a bit in the bed. I also got it so I can take my dog with me more she always wants to go for a ride when I go into town and I feel bad leaving her when she gets so excited.
I get 22-23mpg in my stock taco. I've found that my mpg is better going 45-50 on backroads than on the highway. A lot of highway driving brings my MPG back down to 20 or so. I think it's just the way it's geared. I've seen some people put 5.13s in the rear end to help remedy that
I get 17-18 city 20-22 hwy 14-16 towing in my 2015 tacoma trd sport. I have a hard bed cover and it does leak through those two holes where you said you put in those stickers. Living in upstate NY a bed cover is a must and I'm glad you agree!
Nice. Might have to get one. I have 2018 TRD OR 4x4 and usually get 22 to 23 around town and average around 21 mpg on hwy, at. 75. Mine is factory as far as tires and height, for now at least.
Had a soft top for about 2 years - just took it off and replaced it with a tool box because it just kinda got in the way. The diamondback covers are super cool and that may be my next if I don’t use my toolbox enough!
Chloe you may want to secure your clips when you fold your cover there’s a small slot they snap into so clips don’t damage your cover and stay more flat also
I thought about it but i lived in the ghetto and i had my shit stolen from the bed. So i first i got an ARE even thought it didn't match the color but it was cheaper. Eventually i got an Undercover classic, i can take it off myself but is really sturdy and has keys to lock it. Just be ware that people can still rip through soft tonneaus.
San Diegan here. 2013 TRD Sport 2x4, stock rims, tires and suspension, double cab, long bed with hard top, bi-fold tonneau cover = 16-17mpg. Drive mostly freeway but I drive fast too. Tonneau cover is the best thing I’ve added to my truck. Have driven to Portland, Humboldt, Las Vegas and Phoenix all from San Diego and having a secure bed for belongings is such a relief. Driving up to Portland next month again to visit a friend and go camping, can’t wait! Enjoy your videos.
Gotta thank you for this video... was sitting here trying to remember the "something else" I wanted to get done this weekend...and I have a similar tonneau that I needed to put back on my truck! Thanks for the reminder! :-)
I have reached 24mpg in my open bed 2021 OR Tacoma. Going about 70 on the highway. It’s nice. Daily I hit 21-22 and I don’t baby it. I’m bone stock right now.
Looks like a nice option if you don’t want to spend a lot! We just installed a bakflip mx4 on wifes tacoma. It was 3 times that much but it’s really nice. Textured aluminum panels and flush fit with the bed. Very easy install also
My wife has an F150 ecoboost v6 4X4, and she gets 22mpg combined. It's crazy how these little trucks get the same, or worse milage than full size trucks.
Great choice of product since hardware utilizes the Tacoma rails . . . but price up to $361 . . . and they only have a cover for a 5 foot bed for my 2016 Tacoma . . . . great video . . . Thanks !
265/70/16 diamondback cover , fox shocks Jba UCA maybe 1.5 of lift to 2 barely, a hooke rack average 14.5 usually highway and city , no clue how and I have a light foot , 2016 with 33k
I have a bone stock 1st gen and I think I only get maybe 15 to 16 mpg. It doesnt sound like much but I live on a really small island(Guam) and nothing is really that far. and for the most parts, our roads aren't really highways. My 1st gen isn't a 4 wheel drive but I think the cover really helps with improving the look of the truck as well. IMO, it looks a little better than having just an open bed.
Nice vid, i have 2020 taco trd pro i get like 13-15 mpgs combined city and highway, im hopin to get it up as soon i get my tonneou cover, tnx for the info

I got the Extang Solid Fold 2.0 hard tonneau cover when I bought my Tacoma last year. It's pretty much exactly like yours, but not soft. Really like mine. I think they retail for around $875, but I got lucky. My service guy at the dealership sold me his old one and his old bed mat for like $400 altogether!
What is better Roll up or tri fold tonneau cover? Also you got my dream truck. I’m stuck with a 17’ Rav4 and won’t be getting a Tacoma until I finish nursing school and half of my loans are paid off😂😭 Also get a bed mat if you don’t have one already :3
My friend has a roll up and likes it! I like my tri-fold but have never compared the two side by side. Also, this truck has steep monthly payments which is not the most fun--I'm lucky to be employed as an engineer and do YT as a side gig haha. Soon enough you'll get yours! Good luck in nursing school.
I considering a soft roll up or soft trifold, maybe a hard one everyone talks about on Tacoma world. What you said about the soft one not being totally theft proof is true but it's a deterrent and the items in the bed are not in sight so not as much in the minds of thieves to target.
My 2020 Tacoma came with a hard cover that’s really nice, only thing that sucks, is the Az sun bakes them to a gray color after a while. 😑 also, I get maybe 16mpg without any mods, so far I just have everything blacked out with some OffRoad lights 👍
I weathered in my truck box too but I went with a RSI EVO smart cap. I have to say it’s an absolute amazing product and I am completely loving it check it out.
Hey I just started to watch your videos and I love them they are so cool. On my old 2009 Toyota Tacoma I did the same thing. Now I have a 2015 and I’m thinking about what new things to add to it. Thanks for your videos.
Hi Chloe! I recently started following you cause owning a Tacoma is a dream for me and I was wondering, I'm so sorry if you've mentioned it in another video - I've watched all your truck videos haha - was there a specific reason you wanted a truck or it was more of just because? I've been asked why I want one and I keep getting counterarguments which is super frustrating and then I thought of you, so I was just curious :)
Hi Courtney, I know your question is for Chloe, but I wanted to give you some support, as a woman, in your decision making process to buy a truck or not. I didn't tell my family or friends before I bought my truck because it was my decision to make and my money to spend. I also felt like I wouldn't be given the same constructive advice as a male, but that I would receive a lot of bias negativity because I am a woman. Before purchasing my Tacoma I did tons of research to make sure I was buying the one that best suited my needs/wants. The reason why I bought my truck is because I haul a lot of items to and from my storage, and I didn't want to continue borrowing my father's Tundra to do so. Another reason is I live in Florida where it floods and driving through a flooded area in a car is scary. Lastly, I simply love driving pick up trucks. After I revealed to my father that I bought a Tacoma, he said that it is one of the best vehicle buying decisions that I have ever made, he is very proud of me and that he would worry less about me driving on the road because he feels that I am much more safer in a truck. Courtney, do your research and then decide if you want to buy one. Don't let anyone deter you simply because you're a woman. Only listen to constructive advice.
Hi Courtney! Thanks for watching my videos 😊 I also got a TON of questions from family members and friends about why I bought a truck. Well, the initial reason I wanted and love the Tacoma is because I grew up in San Diego where there were (and still are) a plethora of them on (and off) the road; I suppose that this is a more "just because" reason. However, despite REALLY wanting a Tacoma “just because,” when I was more serious about looking for a vehicle, I wanted something reliable, capable off-road, and reasonably priced. Personally, a sedan didn't suit those wants and needs and I feel that they are generally less safe. An SUV has more seats than I needed and are generally more expensive. The Tacoma fit the bill better than any other vehicle out there. I don’t regret having my Tacoma because 1) it has kept me safe and drove like a champ through multiple terrible NY snow storms, 2) is a great vehicle for off-roading and adventures (and really comes in handy when you need to haul), and 3) has great resale value/is reasonably priced for what you get. Did wanting a Tacoma “just because” influence my decision a lot? Probably. But it’s not like the Tacoma isn’t a great all around/useful vehicle to start out with. When people argue with me about my choice in getting a truck, I tell them that my Tacoma is more reliable, can do more, has better resale value, and is far more loved by its owner than theirs is. 😁
Haha I get these points for sure and I've told them about the reliability. I currently have a Toyota Rav4 and I absolutely love it, but my end goal like for a new car eventually is a truck over anything else mainly for security / being able to use it in diverse conditions so even if I get outta here at some point (I live in the Chicago suburbs so not much need for offroading atm lol), it'll be good elsewhere, so I get that for sure. Thank you both! :)
Do you if can I still use the bed cleats on the bed rail if I purchase this tonneau cover? Would the hard tonneau cover allow the use of the bed cleats?
Thanks for the review, I often see 23-25 mpg in my 2020 v6 by accelerating quite fast to get to my optimum speed and then using cruise control. Ofc if there isn’t a lot of traffic.

It’s surprising held up really well! I don’t have it on full-time (only when I need to haul a bunch of stuff on trips) because I personally like the look of an open bed. I haven’t found any faults with it so far
I don't even own a Tacoma and I'm sitting here like "hmm, good to know".
I just got a Tacoma and now I’m like I can’t even afford most of the stuff I wanted.
Lmfao. That was a good one lol

In less than a year since this review, the price has gone up by about $100.
2020 Pro. 18mpg average.
The link you have in the description for this product leads to a $360 part..... How did you get it for $280?
I bought mine through a local off-road shop (Trux Outfitter) rather than directly from TrailFX, so I probably got closer to MAP pricing that way
@@ChloeKuo understood, thanks. How has it held up for you? Is the tri-fold a weak point?
It’s surprising held up really well! I don’t have it on full-time (only when I need to haul a bunch of stuff on trips) because I personally like the look of an open bed. I haven’t found any faults with it so far
What side steps do you have ?
Are they o.e.m. or aftermarket?
What happened to your bed lights
Working on a V2!

Can I buy this truck from you so you can get one with a driver power seat (2020)? ;)
Mine's only a 2019! Although I wish I had power seats, you should keep your 2020!
