  • Stafford born Ecologist and TV Presenter Mike Dilger returns to Cannock Chase.
We are all lucky to live close to Cannock Chase AONB, but quite often, people use it without knowing about its rare, special and unique habitats and the impacts we can have on its plant life and wildlife.
Sustainability Matters - Stafford recognised how incredibly important the habitats on Cannock Chase are for wildlife and put in a bid with ‘Cannock Chase AONB Sustainable Development Fund’ to partially support the making of a film.
We were delighted to gain the interest of Stafford born Mike Dilger, who is best known for his nature reports on “The One Show’, to showcase how rare and special Cannock Chase is, what problems it faces and what we can all do the make our visits to it respectful, so we can all support protecting it and to help nature flourish.
The film highlights that the Chase is special because there are so many different habitats. We have lowland heath, ancient woodland and some beautiful valley mires; all of which support some very rare species for the Midlands. While conservation is a major priority, land managers and rangers are having to spend more and more time dealing with impacts from the growing number of visitors. While most visitors respect and care for the area, we can all have an impact, even if unintentional.
A new report from the RSPB, using data compiled by the Natural History Museum reported that the UK is listed as the worst in the G7 for the amount of wildlife and wild spaces lost due to human activity, resulting in the UK being ranked twelfth worst of 240 countries and territories. We need to be prepared to change our habits a little, so nature can thrive. We must think of future generations and leave the natural world in a better way than we found it.
We are sure you will agree that protecting and caring for this ‘Jewel in Staffordshire’s crown’ is vitally important, so that wildlife can flourish and people can continue to enjoy it now, and for future generations.
We must all do our bit, we must have the plight of nature firmly at the forefront of our minds. What will you do to make a difference to Cannock Chase?

I've been visiting Cannock Chase for many years right from my childhood days. We're lucky here in the town of Stone to live so near to such a great place for walks.
