24 hour sub dial? If it does count 24 hours then thats brilliant for 24 hour races. Clearly youve never heard of 24 hours of le mans or nurburgring?! This watch would really perform in those circumstances. Not only because it is solar. Which charges under any light they say. But that it wont have any spring deviation or requiring of charging where a rolex would. Meaning this is extremely accurate for racing. In terms of calculating velocities. 24 hours is probably used to divide acceleration into geological positioning as well. Making that easier. Ive never been trained to use a chronograph. I love the looks too but only if it accurate time. So many of my Seikos are off within a few days. I get tired of constantly setting the Seiko watches. Rolex has crazy accurate time and I’m not late to appointments
Similar specs? Don't think Rolex offering quartz watches. Why compare an automatic movement to solar quartz, they are not even comparable. Totally agree re. the 24hr sub-dial. I've rejected many watches because of that useless (imho) 24hr sub-dial. Nearly all quartz chronos have it these days. . I just pass them by.. . of course they could be handy if you live high in the arctic circle. . .or a cave. . . .
24 hour sub-dial is practically useless , but we can find many of them on lower tier chronographs including many using ST19/st1901 , regardless on mechanical or quartz or meca quartz.....i especially went to buy a seiko meca quartz JDM model with 12 hour totalizer sub-dial.and not 24 hour (AM/PM) sub dial .... as many chronograph can only measure 30 mins or 60mins and once after this timing . it is useless and it goes around not know how many rounds the hands have turned
@@simonbailey2151 sometimes I stay indoors for days at a time 😂😂 I also have friends living in certain countries which get limited sunlight throughout the year so that's useful
I picked up the gold dial (really more of a camel) and I just think it gives it a warmth that brings that bit of specialness you want. The white is lovely, but a little cold and clinical. The gold has this 70s chic to it that I think elevates the watch. They're quality pieces, whatever the colourway. Solid feel and lovely size and shape. I'm made up with mine.
Its really a great watch for a one who wish to owned a pricey daytona. I just bought mine when I visited Seiko Boracay branch when I saw they're offering at 20% discount. For a $575 dollar watch like this quality its a really great deal for me. I saw this watch first 1 year ago in this channel and it really impress me and now I got one. Tnks Dave for the detailed review it helps us decide easily to buy a good watch.
Just bought one with a 25% discount. The solar cells are kind of cool actually and make for a talking point, which is always nice in a watch. The repurposing of a sub dial as a battery Meter is also a great touch. Shame the 24hr dial is not a second time zone, that would be peachy! It wears very similar in size and weight to a Rolex seadweller 16600. Nice review
i recently got this watch as a beater chronograph in my collection and wow i must say this watch is absolutely gorgeous, with great functionality and amazing tolerances
Good review. For me the selling points on this watch are the smooth running center hand. I try to stay away from watches with dead-beat seconds, as is common on too many quartz movements. The other selling point is the 24 hour dial. My Omega Speedmaster caliber 1045 also has a 24 hour dial. This becomes particularly useful when starting up the watch when it has not run for a while. I instantly know when it is safe to set the date. Without the 24 hour dial the only safe method is to keep turning the hands until the date changes, then turn the hands 5 more hours and set the correct date. Although this watch does not look anything like any of my caliber 6139’s, I still like it and will purchase one.
That's the only reason I like 24 hour subdials. However with this being a solar quartz, it's kind of a set it once and never have to mess with it again, so I feel like the 24 hour subdial isn't really useful in this case.
@@JusttheWatch I know what you’re saying. In 2010 I purchased a Citizen solar powered perpetual calendar. Despite seldom being in direct sunlight, it has NEVER stopped! What a workhorse! I expect your Seiko will be the same. (That citizen gets very little wrist time because of the “dead seconds” center hand. Otherwise I love the watch)
Seiko makes a fantastic product, i was recently given my father’s Seiko Sportura Kinetic Chronograph from about 15-ish years ago. Runs beautifully and keeps perfect time. Robust, affordable (sometimes,) practical watches.
Thanks for pointing out the limitations of the sub dials. You're the only reviewer I've seen to date who actually mentions this. It's certainly a minus, plus those solar panels are a bit of a turn off. I don't know. I'll have to think about it. It's a great looking watch though, that's for sure.
Great review! New to the watch community but have been searching for a good quality watch for a while. Had my heart set on a Tudor panda but wasn’t willing to spend over retail. We were at a local Jeweller this week to pick up my (soon to be) wife and I’s wedding bands when I seen this watch in the case and it spoke to me. Beautiful panda dial at a fraction of the cost of the Tudor. Love the look and how it wears in the wrist as well. And most importantly feel like I’ve made a good purchase!
On the strength of this review I purchased one - I love it but the best thing about it I found is the bracelet fitted me perfectly right out of the box. I have large 8.5" wrists and its the first one that I've ever had that this has been the case. One Happy Bunny ❤
Absolutely stunning watch I love it. I’m a big fan of collecting watches and watches in general. I’ve got a nice collection of watches and I’m going to add a Seiko to my collection.
Excellent show. Seiko did well in terms of aesthetics, dimensions and movement, but i agree with your points, particularly on the 24-hour subdial and the solar cells' subtle line. I'm not sure about the price as well.
Looked really nice on the rally strap! I suppose all of the circles and holes made a really nice comprehensive look. Second was the black leather strap that gave it a heritage look. Loved the video
Just bought this watch (panda dial) from Seiko’s online store. I will have to wear mine for a while before I can form an intelligent opinion but my initial feeling is that this is gonna be a great watch. Your review was excellent and I just subscribed to your channel.
What a good review! I like, that you put the different straps on. I didn't think about changing it but the tan rally strap was just perfect for my taste.. IT looks so good!
I recently picked up this watch at a local watch store. I wasn’t looking for it but once it was pointed out to me as a Seiko Panda watch I had to give it a second look. I don’t know what happened but once I put on, it took me by surprise! For me of course, once I placed it on my wrist, it had a totally different look and feel. I was instantly enamored! I browse watches at stores and try them on but none have ever struck me as this watch did. I am absolutely not a collector, but do own my fair share of watches, 24 or so I believe. Being a big fan of Timex Marlin watches, while purchasing a Seiko SRPH78 Limited Edition Seiko Presage, I was shown this Panda/Speedtimer SSC813P1. Needless to say, I ended up walking away with two watches. Quite a few people complain about the 24 hour dial or the subdial as well as the price. Though I like the look of the chronograph, I would never use that function in anything I do. Most cell phones have that capability, and my iPhone does that job just fine whenever I am timing something for work. Subdials do not bother me in the least and the price was greatly reduced on both watches, that’s more so due to the fact that I am a good customer. The prices I paid were well below list price, I did some research and found the pricing to be very fair. Again, this Panda watch was an impulse buy but by far is now one of my favorites in my collection, yes, even above the Marlins. Thank you for such a great review on this watch! Your work is amazing!
I really, really like the design, it almost resembles perfectly what I'm looking for in a chronograph, but at this price point there are other watches that have higher priority on my buying list
@@suitedandbooted363 The watch has a nice design but that's all there is to it. For the movement and the quality, the price is a rip off. The watch is not even made in Japan yet it commands a Made in Japan price. For the same money you can get a slew of higher quality, Swiss Made, quartz chronographs.
Great review, thank you once again ! That said….. why would I go and buy this watch from Seiko ? I have nothing against Seiko, I love the brand I own 6 Seiko’s, and this watch look beautiful…. but at about 1000$ retail Canadian that’s way too much for a simple quartz watch, yes it has Sapphire crystal, milled clasp, solid end links, and is Solar….. but I can buy a Pagani Design Daytona Homage PD-1644 with sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel, milled clasp, solid end links, and with a Seiko VK63 Meca-Quartz movement for around 80$ Canadian, which I did, and am very happy about it. You could buy 10 Pagani PD-1644 for the price of one Seiko. Something else I noticed, why don’t more people on youtube bash Seiko or Tissot for that matter, for producing a watch “ hommage/copy “ of a Rolex Daytona ? Why ? Because it has the Seiko or Tissot name/brand on the watch ? Because of their history in the world of watch making ? I still find it a little hypocritical when that happens, but that’s my opinion….. Thank you and keep the videos coming.
The 24 hour dial comes from the precious iteration of the speedtimer, which is one of the few watches that have gone to space. A 24 hour dial is highly useful for those who can't tell the time of day by the light left. As for me, I really don't mind it one bit.
Great review on another great watch - I love the 39mm size. I really like the design, I have a 7 1/4 - 7 1/2 inch wrist so I went through the big (well over 40mm) chronograph phase and now I'm more back to the 39mm size which is so comfortable it really is that sweet spot. Going to go to my AD and try one of these on, its really nice to have a Daytona(ish) option that is not a homage and not thousands of dollars. Thanks for another great review, keep up the great work.
Nice review and totally agree with you on the 24 hr subdial. I would much prefer a traditional hour counter. Or as you point out make the 24 hr dial independent of the main dial to track a second time zone. As it is, 90% of people have no real use for a 24 hr dial that essentially only acts and an AM/PM indicator.
Thanks for the great review, Dave. This video has really given me a great sense of the pros and cons associated with this watch. Keep up the great reviews. Respectfully, James
I wouldn't use an independent 24 hour sub dial to track another time zone too often but that's better than what exists currently. A 24 hour sub dial is almost completely useless for me. I'm not an astronaut, spelunker, and I don't live at the north or south pole.
Just came across your video searching for this watch. Man, I was blown away by the quality of this review. Your perspective was solid and the video itself was super sick. Definitely appreciate the thought and time you spent on this review. Subbed. Thanx!
Very nice review I'm not quite sure about the complaints... maybe lack of finishing is ok but having solar panels in the subdials? that's pretty genius if u ask me, they look nice and the watch looks very nice... price surely bit too high...
Good review , covering everything one needs to know. The watch looks great on the straps and with a serviceable bracelet bonus for an affordable Seiko. Don’t pay full retail for the watch , I just picked one up for $550 CND good deal nice watch.
Great video, Dave. Totally agree that at $575 (plus tax) that is should be a little more special. I would add that I would like to have seen more lume in the indices. I'm still not sure if the other non-lumed indices are where the solar panels are. It would make it more easy to pull the trigger on what will likely be a $600+ purchase. That being mentioned, it is a very handsome watch.
I am thinking about getting this watch. Thank you for showing the other bands. I actually think I like the watch better with the leather bands over the bracelet.
The solar is big interest to me. I find that interesting. Never liked quartz for the need of a battery. While these should be relentlessly charged and thus more accurate. If its not more accurate than that rolex. Then seiko is lowering quality to allow it.
Hahaha I assumed this was a mecaquartz too & just deleted a comment where i complained it was the wrong VK movement bc 'the other' has a 12hr counter. I realised a while ago that watch companies, retailers & reviewers (most!) have no interest in chronographs as actual stopwatches hence why literally no one ever discusses the pros & cons of the ubiquitous 30min subdials on mechanical chronos and why it's almost impossible to buy one with a centrally mounted 60min counter - and even harder to add a 12hr counter. So my best guess is Seiko know people (inc watch nerds/fans) who buy chronos do so bc they like the watches 'with the little clocks on the dials' and a 24hr dial is at least useful for setting the date. After hearing you explain why the subdials look the way they do i love them - their functionality makes their appearance quite striking and i like that. Love that power indicator too. Hate the no12hr dial though... not sure I could get past that.
I bought one for myself 👍 The bracelet adjustment isn't the best but overall I'm satisfied... Any idea why the second hand (bigger ones) stops at 12? The small second hand at 9 side seems to be working fine.... But not sure why the main second hand stops exactly at 12
Hi Dave, good comments regarding the sub-dials. My main gripe with the watch is why isn't the date window equally spaced between the 4 and 5 o'clock indices? A small detail, but one that bugs me.
I'm tempted to buy this watch, but whether someone likes it or not that was a really good review! I appreciate it! And I'm a bracelet guy but I really enjoyed it on the tan rally leather!
How does this watch compare to the Dan Henry 1962? Basically same dimensions but with a Seiko Mecaquartz movement and 50m of water resistance. Also comes at $270 which is way cheaper.
Good review. Thanks for sharing. With regard to price, currently you can’t even find these watches at list price and most of them are selling for over 1000 USD.
I think the 24 hour sub dial is for motorsports endurance racing such as the 24 hours of Lemans and Daytona. It's name Speedtimer strongly suggests a homage to the Rolex Daytona?
I like this watch, but in the macro shots in this video it seems like there is a lot of dirt in the sub dials and the cut outs in the dial for the sub dials seem very rough. Was planning on getting this, but it seems to many corners were cut making it for me. Would rather have paid a higher price to have had this done with proper care.
Hey man, great review. I have a question about the reference numbers of these watches. I'm on the market for one, but have seen some for sale with different references numbers: SBDL085 and SSC813. Do you know what the difference between these reference numbers is?
Great video as always, I'm gonna try some of those straps combinations. Love the look of the watch but I think the Seiko SSC769 is a far better deal, sapphire, 100m, solar at around $225 and it has a similar panda look.
Excellent review. You have hit the nail on the head - this is a high priced watch, but Seiko doesn't give you very much for the money. No titanium case/bracelet, no atomic time sync, etc. Interestingly, Orient (Seiko Epson) offers the WV0041TX SOLAR PANDA for around $200. If you want a Seiko Panda Chrono with a solar powered movement, then the Orient is a better value.
My vote is with you: either put something useful in place of the 24 hour subdial or make it dual time. Useless as is. $500 maybe $700 not chance. Thanks for another excellent review, well thought out and well produced!
I found my speed master in 2003 on sale and I jumped on it only to fines out later that what I had was actually a reduced. To this day I still think it looks a bit dainty. I would love this watch but I just don’t think it has the size that I want in a chronograph.
An excellent and honest review as always Dave. I have one reserved and will collect next week. Priced around £600 in the UK which is probably expensive but that's just the way it is here. Nevertheless I am really looking forward to it.
Had mine in the same color as yours for about a week now and I love it. It's an eye catcher. My only wish ( not a complaint) is that it were JUST A SMIDGE bigger. 41mm would have been perfect for my 7.5 inch wrist. Otherwise, it's definitely a keeper!
It’s definitely a great looking watch for the money, however the quality of Seiko watches totally justifies the price. I’ve got Seiko watches from the sixties and 80s and still work fantastically . It’s a watch that will last forever with a little TLC. I truly like your Chanel.
Shame about that sub-dial cut out and the deep date window. Otherwise great watch! Completely unrelated, what do you think of Zeppelin watches? I think they have some funky dial designs, pretty good value imo.
I bought the gold dial JDM version SBDL089 and love it. The dial is actually a muted gold with sandy texture. I got it from Seiya Japan for $490 and no tax or import tax!
If you’re in Australia you can pick one of these up for 638 AUD (405 USD) at Watch Depot, down from 1050. That’s incredible value. I got the SSC911P for $60 more though.
Good video Dave - have you done a video editing course or something? Very slick presentation. I missed the chance to get one for $750 Australian and I won't buy at $1050, but I expect to get one of these if the price drops again. After the disappointing Citizen bullhead earlier this year I had real hopes for this Seiko, but the price is too steep at the moment. "It's almost, but not quite - " seems to sum up a lot of opinions. Price is a significant part of that, but Seiko haven't got the bracelet right and I know it would annoy me. The endlinks are OK but they don't fit the case very well, and the clasp needs more adjustment. I would put the watch onto a rally strap. But what are the alternatives at present? Leaving aside various watches with Seagull movements (I have doubts about long-term reliability) there are not that many that measure-up: Citizen have the bullhead (very disappointing) and a Panda version of the CB5874-90A - it's not bad. Solar powered with a sapphire crystal, but only one of the subdials is used for the chrono. There is a 24hr dial and a dial that shows which function mode is in use. It also ticks once per second :-( Orient have the the Neo-70s panda which is really good but the bracelet is chintzy and the watch is better suited for small wrists. There's a Casio Edifice panda that costs about $100, but it looks like it. Mineral crystal, a cheap strap - good value, but not an alternative to the Seiko. Bulova Marinestar or Stuhrling Formula? Neither one is really a panda. After that all the options are either Seagull movement, over $1K (Hamilton, Tissot) or micros. Straton and Tsao both make good candidates. Dan Henry? People complain about their customer service, so not sure. Are there any others under ~$700US that are worth a look?
You can tell if it’s mecaquartz if the reset snaps back. If it glides back to the start it’s all quartz. I hate to be so negative on so many videos, but this is clearly meant to look like a you-know-what. That bezel in particular. But because it’s a name brand it gets a pass. Oh trust’s our panda dial watch with tachymeter. And is that dust on the sub dials? I do like the small clasp. Some watches have huge bulky clasps. But I wanted to ask about your pocket shots - why is the watch being worn upside down? My dad used to wear his watch reversed (bottom of his wrist not top).
Been waiting for this review -- Really does look like a good, almost great watch, but the real shame is that price. Personally I think I'll backburner this one given I've added enough new watches this year, and cross fingers it might go on sale in the next 1-2 years. If I do pick it up at some point, I might have to get a black sailcloth too, given it looked really good on that one.
Great review/coverage. I don't worry about the whole Daytona thing...I think people take the whole "homage" thing way too far anyway. Usually Rolex fanboys...Rolex certainly doesn't own the 3 register chronograph OR the Panda dial OR coloured dial faces ie. the recent comparisons between the OP and the new Omega AT's. Get over it people...This Seiko is a nice 39mm quartz tri-register chrono and it's a $600 Seiko. The reality is that's like 1/40th of the price to get a Daytona right now and I wouldn't call anyone's Seiko Speed timer a Daytona homage. Keep up the great coverage of these more budget friendly or affordable segment!

Yes, I have the golden one too and it's really beautiful
Ya, l like the golden dial, though l did chose the white one.
I have white but i agree with you, White does give you more sterile and cold feeling. However that being said both are beautiful in their own way
This was an excellent review on this watch, and I liked that you showed it on a variety of straps.
Nice review
How get 25% discount
Still using it? How's the accuracy?
Accuracy is fine.
Just bought one of these here in Australia, but I got the 911P model. It was 1050AUD down to 638 AUD. Amazing value at that price
Your video production quality has really increased as of late. It's very noticeable and very appreciated. Thanks for the awesome vids!
i recently got this watch as a beater chronograph in my collection and wow i must say this watch is absolutely gorgeous, with great functionality and amazing tolerances
@@coffeeisgood102 I put my Citizen solar to chrono mode and so the center hand stops 😊
@@JusttheWatch The 24 hour subdial is for motorsports endurance racing. 24 hours of Daytona, Lemans, Spa etc. It's in the name itself Speedtimer.
great review, I love mine...only had it a week or so. It will remain my new favorite for quite awhile
Seiko makes a fantastic product, i was recently given my father’s Seiko Sportura Kinetic Chronograph from about 15-ish years ago. Runs beautifully and keeps perfect time. Robust, affordable (sometimes,) practical watches.
I just ordered the Seiko ssc 813 . I presently have the Sportura Kinetic which is a superior chronograph. 😊
Thanks for pointing out the limitations of the sub dials. You're the only reviewer I've seen to date who actually mentions this. It's certainly a minus, plus those solar panels are a bit of a turn off. I don't know. I'll have to think about it. It's a great looking watch though, that's for sure.
This one is going to be my pickup-n-go watch. This watch fits formal and casual outings, love it
Great review!
Picked up my ssc813 🐼 and must say im in love 😍
Excellent show. Seiko did well in terms of aesthetics, dimensions and movement, but i agree with your points, particularly on the 24-hour subdial and the solar cells' subtle line. I'm not sure about the price as well.
24 hour sub dial is for Motorsports endurance racing, 24 hours of Daytona, Lemans, Spa. It's in the name itself, Speedtimer.
Great review and great editing with story and photos. Love the addition of multiple straps... very unique and I've never seen it before. Bravo.
Landed one yesterday took me ages to find one. I absolutely love it. Best every day watch I have now
Looked really nice on the rally strap!
Can I ask what other watches have ur priority?
What other watches have your priority?
what others watch?
Like what?
Thank you for being one of the rare reviewers of this watch that show it on different straps
I own this watch. Returned my seiko ginza presage for this one and no regret. What a beautiful watch.
You've up'ed your production game to new heights. Congrats. Your channel is spot on.
I picked up a JDM Seiko Panda for $282 + $20 shipping. Same solar movement, but it's 41mm. Love it.
Bought one recently, by far one of the best timepieces I own
Picked one up today, what a nice watch feels very premium in hand.
Every time Seiko puts sapphire and a decent bracelet on a watch, the price goes through the roof.
So u can justify 15000 for A Daytona but not $700 for Seiko
@@suitedandbooted363 The watch has a nice design but that's all there is to it. For the movement and the quality, the price is a rip off. The watch is not even made in Japan yet it commands a Made in Japan price. For the same money you can get a slew of higher quality, Swiss Made, quartz chronographs.
@@BlagoP Hey Blago, any recommendations on such Swiss Made quartz chronos? I agree that the price is a bit steep on this Seiko!
@@ceja1500 he will suggest you get a technomarine or Michael kors chrono.
@@Dranreb865 🤮
Received this watch last week. Love it so far.
Thank you I bought this watch yesterday from Japan so I have to wait for it to be shipped but very excited and looking forward to it.
Bro, the original Speedtimer didn't come with a 24hr subdial.
The 24 hour subdial is for motorsports endurance racing, 24 hours of Daytona, Lemans, Spa. It's in the name itself Speedtimer.
Hey. Where did you purchase it for that price? Been looking and cheapest i’ve seen is 725CAD
It's a very nice watch, I'm not too worried about the subdials, and it is very attractive. I'd buy it, but not for $675.
I bought one for myself 👍
The bracelet adjustment isn't the best but overall I'm satisfied...
Just ordered my Speedtimer variant. Cannot wait to wear.
Agree with your points. I also bought mine at $500. I am wearing it with a black shell cordovan strap. Looks great.
Great review! I’ve always liked your channel but you really stepped your game up👌🏼
I wonder if this movement will age well or if the rechargeable battery will fail by age
Great review Dave, love your honesty. I agree with you, for the price, a more quality watch is expected…
Nice! Do you think the limited edition silver/ blue background has that premium look? Extra mile as you say? It’s another $300 odd
My vote is with you: either put something useful in place of the 24 hour subdial or make it dual time. Useless as is. $500 maybe $700 not chance. Thanks for another excellent review, well thought out and well produced!
Man, the cinematics are awesome! Enjoyed the review, instant sub.
I found my speed master in 2003 on sale and I jumped on it only to fines out later that what I had was actually a reduced. To this day I still think it looks a bit dainty. I would love this watch but I just don’t think it has the size that I want in a chronograph.
Thorough and honest review. Personally, I really like the watch. Will really consider adding this one to my collection. Thanks
An excellent and honest review as always Dave. I have one reserved and will collect next week. Priced around £600 in the UK which is probably expensive but that's just the way it is here. Nevertheless I am really looking forward to it.
Maybe worth waiting to see if Creation Watches get it in stock?
@@simonbailey2151 they can't sell Prospex or Presage in the UK Simon, but thanks anyway.
Fantastic 80s guitar driven synthwave music in the intro.
Gratz Dave. Really cool content of high quality and no BS.
Great looking homage to the Rollie Cosmograph. Happy you pulled the trigger on this one.
Dang it, production on your videos has really improved over time, enjoyed the whole video.
Great Review as always! 🥰
Leaving aside various watches with Seagull movements (I have doubts about long-term reliability) there are not that many that measure-up:
Citizen have the bullhead (very disappointing) and a Panda version of the CB5874-90A - it's not bad. Solar powered with a sapphire crystal, but only one of the subdials is used for the chrono. There is a 24hr dial and a dial that shows which function mode is in use. It also ticks once per second :-(
Orient have the the Neo-70s panda which is really good but the bracelet is chintzy and the watch is better suited for small wrists.
Great review, Dave! Thanks for the wonderful images and insights!
Great review on the watch and your pairing with other straps really place you above other reviews!
I always look at the 24hr dial as an am/pm indicator - handy if you spend your days In a coal mine or windowless environment
It’s useless! Give us a dang 12-hour totalizer!
Can you link the strap at 3:16 ? It looks so good, what colour is it?
Is it expensive watch? Is it worth to wait a bit that price drop?
Been waiting for this review -- Really does look like a good, almost great watch, but the real shame is that price. Personally I think I'll backburner this one given I've added enough new watches this year, and cross fingers it might go on sale in the next 1-2 years. If I do pick it up at some point, I might have to get a black sailcloth too, given it looked really good on that one.
Ha!! At 5:09 I thought "what?! The pushers and crown are on the left??"
Great review.
Im inlove. I think its such a good looking watch. Loved the review.
Exceptionally detailed review! Outstanding!
