Why Seiko's SSC819 Chronograph Is Disappointing & The Flightmaster SNA411 Is Still King Under $500

  • I've put off reviewing the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC819 (known by watch enthusiasts and fans as the "Seikona") because in my opinion, nothing beats Seiko's Flightmaster, which costs a fraction of the price. However, there are rumors that the Flighty SNA411 is soon to be discontinued, which begs the question-will the Seikona take the crown as the brand's most affordable chronograph? To answer this, I borrowed one to compare with the Flighty, and in this watch review I analyze its strengths, weaknesses, positives, negatives, the often overlooked history of Seiko's contribution to chronographs, and the design evolution that inspired this Rolex Daytona-esque watch. Is this relatively new Seiko worth the significantly higher price tag? How does it compete with everything else on the market today around the same price? And is this the best new racing chronograph between $500 and $1000? Join me for a close look at this sporty #strapmonster in the studio and out for a spin on a sunny day around Philadelphia's Navy Yard.

I have the sand or gold dial version, I have to say I love it. Sure the 24hr dial is a bit useless and the bracelet while a massive improvement over my other Seiko’s is still a bit jangly, but I bought it primarily for how it looks and that along with the way it wears leaves me with no regrets and I find myself wearing it often. The bracelet could be so much better if the tolerance of the pusher in the clasp was tighter, that’s a little frustrating because it seems so obvious.

    Hello. Thanks for the review.
I saw the Seiko SSC815P1 with the beautiful blue dial at a local dealer.
    Positive:
I really like that design. It has curved glass. It's a good size for me. Seiko has made a power meter, which I have missed from Seiko solar.
    Negative:
I'm not into bracelets, I'd like Seiko to come up with an alternative strap and thus a little cheaper.
I'm also not a fan of the 24 hour dial, just the aesthetic, I'd like it to be the date.
The price in Denmark is an average of DKK 5,000. That's about 734 dollars. It is somewhat more expensive than expected. Would love to see it in Titanium for that price. B.R. Steen B

I also truly wish more "traditional" watchmakers would start putting real illumination into some of their sports watches. The need to read the chonograph often doesn't end when the sun sets or you find yourself in dim light, but all these brands pretend it does. Overall on this model, you nailed it - a nice watch but a missed opportunity here by Seiko, with flaws that shouldn't exist.

    Hi TGV
Like this Speedtimer, especially the fact that it’s solar powered. But it doesn’t quite have the charm of the Flightmaster with its yellow hands and all...
Seems like Seiko has tried to make a more elegant/timeless watch - anonymity is the price to pay. More madness, please😆
    Too bad with the shortcuts.
Think you’re right that it’s better to go all the way and have a higher price tag. This is hardly going to be a super selling watch anyway, and those interested will probably pay a bit more...
Wish Seiko would make a solar powered rerelease of the Pogue - and without making the case bigger as so many companies does with their rereleases...
    Keep up the good work👍

Review is spot on. You’ve got a great design but several flaws only another $400-$500 would fix to generate an affordable classic. But Seiko seem to want $3000usd for their lastest mechanical chronographs. That’s why buyers are still grabbing 6139s for a grand to $1500 plus. Let’s see what’s a $1200 -$1500 seitona looks like please Seiko!

For my having tried this watch in person I must say its a nice watch but the proportioning is a bit off for me with 39mm size it should be perfect for my 6.5in wrist but the thickness and slab style case makes it look pretty tubby and not thing I prefer. Compare to say something like Speedmaster Reduced, that one has such elegant case treatment and thickness that it is rather a perfect chrono size for me.
That being said I do think this watch is a great value for its price. For a daytona substitute I reckon the Black Bay Chrono is still the closest apart from other homages.

The modern mechanical automatic Swiss Watch is basically a number of things.
    Waterproof
    Automatic
    Sporty to various degrees
And a highly reliable time keeper to the point of being a the grade of an officially certified Swiss chronometer Or BETTER.
The dive watch is the ideal pinnacle of all these .
    Moreover
You can trust your life to a diver watch .
It was designed to TRUST YOUR LIFE TO IN ALL ITS FUNCTIONS and COMPLICATIONS ( listed above ) and it is obviously sporty .
Not surprising ( in this light ) the SCUBA DIVER WATCH would be the pinnacle of sport watches.
Rolex is often seen as the pinnacle of Swiss watches so this would explain why their SUBMARINER DATE and NO DATE is sooo extremely popular.
This said I’d predict that other divers would be seen as the best from each brand .

I actually quite like the look of it. Prefer it to the flighty , as that's just too busy for my taste. But I'm a dive watch guy, and my seiko sla043 is as good as seiko get. People moan about a seiko costing 4k , but they are easily as well built as the competition. I have a tudor black bay s and g, and it's similar priced to the seiko. It's keeps much better time, and feels luxury, but I still think the seiko is superior in build quality. I'm glad seiko have gone upmarket, the sla models are just beautiful. Also their mid tier range like the spb143 , is hard to beat for about 1k. I can't think of another diver that's better from a major brand really, imho.

Have both. Love both - but one is more equal than the other. Flighty getting sold. The Speedtimer (have it in blue) just feels more substantial and premium in hand and the makes the flightly feel cheap IMO. Have a Navitimer for when I want to get my compicated dial fetish on.
The bracelet is crap but isn't that just a Seiko trademark at this point? If you're wearing it on bracelet you're missing out. Strap monster. You can pick up the JDM models from a few Japanese sites for close to $400 new if you don't want the Panda.

I would take two Islanders everyday of the week. Islander's biz model of seiko watches cept better still works. I have a couple Seikos , one since the early 90's and one samurai, but, my days of scanning the seiko offerings are over. Ill have my 90's square chrono till I die but, there are so many creative and overbuilt micros that it is foolish to pour $ into a name.

Pin & Collar bracelets in 2022 is inexcusable. I literally will avoid watches with this kind of bracelet. As for micros, God I wish you'd explore Zelos. Yes they are big watches....but there are plenty to explore in the 38 - 41mm area. But otherwise.....onwards.....upwards.......

Edifying as always TGV and nothing better on a Sunday evening. I really like the look of the 'affordable' Hamilton chrono but I'm lucky to have in my collection one of the pioneers -- a 1970 Heuer Carrera -- so can't justify being in the market.

Honestly I couldn't disagree with you more on this watch, I have the blue and love it. The 24 hr indicator is a massive miss but the rest of the design really comes together. It looks like a sophisticated chronograph not like the 'toy-ish' cheaper ones seiko makes. The bracelet is very uncomfortable so that stays in the box!

    • @theurbangentry
      @theurbangentry  2 года назад +10

Thank you for the feedback, I see this is your first comment on the channel, welcome! I have yet to try the blue version, so I really could not speak about that version, as you can understand, it would be very unfair to speak about a watch I have not tried., But as I said in this review, this version is a great watch, especially when it comes to quality, despite the many shortcomings and if you enjoy it, that is all matters! As for the "toy-ish" ones, I have yet to try any of cheaper offerings, again I can not speak for those, my flightmaster and this speedmaster I think have me covered! But I will look out for this blue version you have, I wonder if it will be a different experience.
      Best regards and again, welcome!

Totally agree on the 24 hr indicator, that and the amount of lume are my only complaints. I have much more expensive watches in my box that I think about wearing but always end up wishing I was wearing this. Absolutely love it.

Great episode T! It’s nicknamed the Seitona for a reason I guess. It’s ironically a safer bet than a reimagined 6139!!!;) but how amazing would it be to bring back the Pogue!!
The Flighty I don’t wear that often. Think it’s because of how busy the dial is. I only need the time from my watches and maybe it’s the strap width that limits my strap experimentation.
