Thanks! I have never had this much issue with painting a body. I almost went to the hardware store and I was going to see if they had a can of regular spray paint in a color close enough to try it. I refrained from doing so but I was close! I was hoping the clear coat would fix the rough spots but it didn't. O'well, it is done now and I am not spending any more time on it. I'm glad it is done as it was testing my patience and will to complete it!! Thanks for checking in!!

Hi Addam, these re editions are very good, they upgraded the parts with modern materials and this sound good as it eliminates the problems of thin old aluminium OR aluminum...I own the original one that never run (too old to be enjoyable). Wait to see the test on tarmac. Ciao, Nanni
It should be a very nice runner, the little taste I got in the garage showed it to be a quick one! I hope to get out early this weekend if the weather cooperates and get it run.
This video was extremely helpful. Your experiences with trying to paint this body sounds exactly like what I experienced when trying to paint one of those Jeep XJ hardbodies for my TRX4 a couple months back. I’m no expert but I’ve been rattle can painting models for decades…and I simply could not get the paint to lay down properly! I gave up on that body but in the time since, I’ve begun warming my paint cans and shaking the hell out of them and it seems like it’s helping…but I am hesitant to try another one of those bodies and I feel like there’s a 75% chance I’d ruin the body on that Tyrrel. 😢
I am glad you found it helpful. I normally don't have this much issue with painting, maybe some dust or a rogue bug messing things up or even the heavy handed paint sag here and there! This was the first time I ever had one fight me so badly. I had just painted the Fighting Buggy with the same color paint from the same hobby shop and it went down perfectly, glass smooth and defect free. This one refused to lay flat and even after stripping and sanding the whole thing to even everything out it refused. I generally warm up the cans and shake them all for quite a while, I think this one was an anomaly and was not going to get a perfect finish no matter what. I am not sure if it was a reaction to the plastic for some reason but I have accepted it is not perfect and with the decals on it it looks good enough. You can always save the the xj by going grungy with it. Spray it down with a couple good coats of oxide red primer and then a few coats of grey primer and then the color over that and then wet sand through the color to expose bits of the gray and even the red oxide primer in sports and then hit it with a flat clear to give it an even dull finish. Then you have an old "project truck" build!! Make that the runner body. Once it gets scratched the gray and the red will show through the top color and keep weathering itself for you!!!! I did my Gen8 like that and it turned out really cool looking.
I am glad you enjoyed it! I have looked previously and you can find them but they are discontinued and have been for a while so they are not easy to come across and if you do they are rather pricey.
Good on you Addam👌, I'm like you, I love my Tamiya kits but hate the fact that spares can be hard to find. It must be such a huge financial opportunity for Tamiya if they'd for once in their life listen to their supporters and act on it. I'm really feeling for you with the paint issues mate!, that would have been so frustrating!, it looks awesome though!👌. Judging by the grain on the tyres it looks like it hooked up ok when you tested it, can't wait to see your running video👍🦘🇦🇺
The parts thing has been an issue for a long time but only amplified over the last couple years of so many people building kits again and the impacts of the supply chain problems but it has always been an issue with them. The car turned out well and other than the paint it was not hard. The paint issues really dampened my mood and my want to finish it. The first time was an 'it happens, I can fix it' type of thing. The second go-round with it coming out rough was a real let down and I had to push it to the side for a while.and come back to it! It is rare I get put off by a kit like that but that one annoyed me. It didn't help that I spent 6 or 7 months waiting to get it either. It is done and looks good enough I am ok with it. It should really rip out there and I am scouting for a newly sealed parking lot to run it in. I'd love to find one like that but I have a smooth basketball court I can use if I can't. Thanks as always for watching and for checking in!!
@@AddamsPlayground It's going to be great if they ever get organised and can keep up with the demands, imagine being able to go to your hobby store and get whatever kit you like and be able to get spares. I can't believe even after removing the 1st coat and re pepping the body it still gave you trouble!, that must have been disheartening alright!. I've had a couple of kits do that so I started using another brand of paint in the same shade and colour and ended up with a great finish. From what I've seen they handle and turn really well. Should be a lot of fun.
Love your videos, Addam! Always an interesting and entertaining watch. In my experience (which is limited) the foam tyres I have run are more durable than you might expect. I can see why you would like to keep a pristine looking set though! The car looks so good though! The paint looks great on camera, but I feel your pain, been there and done that too! You are not alone my friend. Anyway, all the best and happy RCing! :))
Thanks Mark! It turned out well in the end. It was a test of will to get it done though! The paint issue still baffles me but it has all the decals on now so it is a wrap!! I hope to get it out running tomorrow morning early before all the kids show up at the park. Thanks as always for the support!!
Love it brother.. totally agree on the parts situation. Tamiya isn’t as bad as Kyosho but they both suck . Btw you can really see the 2 different yellows on the lunchboxes on this video
Yeah, I get that everything is harder now but it confuses me when right as the product releases there are no tires for it. Like they don't know how to plan ahead at all. Hopefully I don't need them and I am worrying about nothing. In some light they look identical and in others they look very different.
@@IowaBudgetRCBashers oh goody... More great news!! I won't lie, I avoid the nightly news because I am always busy and don't feel like depressing myself daily so I have heard about that. Guess I gotta go check out Google News now...
I would imagine the rear tyres where the power is might be a long term durability issue like you say. No support means I couldn’t justify the cash as I do run my cars quite hard. Still it looks great and it’s a bit of iconic F1 history . Nice one Addam . Look forward to a running report 👍
Yeah, I have never run foam tires myself but I have seen them run a lot on asphalt and they get torna and chunked up on the rough stuff. So I am scouting for a nice smooth spot to run to try and avoid ruining them as I can only get them from overseas. Kind of a pain but nothing I can do but try and protect them. I think it will be pretty quick and drive really well so I am looking forward to it!!
Really impressive build Addam! Always wondered how these cars handled as far as turning radius! Never have seen one run. Can’t wait to see yours! I totally agree with you about parts support! That would definitely tweak me as well! Shouldn’t have to purchase through third party sellers! I hope someone with influence there is watching and listening! Awesome job on this bro!💯✌🏻😃
Thank you! It turned out well enough in the end I am happy with it. I think it is going to run really well. In just the little bit of testing it downstairs it is gonna be quick and seems to turn very well and has a rather tight radius. Fingers crossed the weather is good this weekend and I can get out and run it. It should be fun!!
I have returned! What a cool design bud, I was waiting for this one and you did not disappoint! I wanted to ask you if you would consider taking it to the raceway and running out in the parking lot there. Should be mostly empty on weekdays
I have not, I have not even been over there to know what is there. It is an option. Since this one is so low to the ground and the smallest of rocks are going to give it a fit I may take it to the basketball court at the park near me. It has the really smooth but grippy surface. I might get over there early this weekend before the park gets busy.
@@AddamsPlayground sounds good man, I’m pretty sure I know what park you’re referring to and if I’m right, I one hundred percent agree that that basket ball court has got a nice sticky surface lol
Lookin' good...and so is the car! 😜 Seriously though, I am really looking forward to building mine. It will be winter before I get to it, for sure. Maybe I will prime the blue body parts to avoid the issues you had. Good rant about Tamiya parts availability! Some people slag off Traxxas but at least you can still get parts for just about any model they have ever made. Tamiya is essentially the opposite. They discontinue a chassis/model and once the parts pool is depleted you are S.O.L. unless they do a re-release. Sadly, the problem with Tamiya parts is even worse in Canada. Most stuff I am ordering from the US or Japan. I am not trying to "one-up" your point but even trying to find wheels and tires for a some of their current buggies is difficult here. If I come across a hoard of foam tires, I will send some your way!
Thanks! I came out good enough in the end and I gave it all the patience I had for it! It was a tough one to keep working on when the paint was sub-par. I know parts and gear are harder to get up there in Canada and I know your not trying to outdo me with life is harder! 😂 It is frustrating that the US is the largest consumer of Tamiya kits but the parts and support are so awful. Likewise even worse for you guys up north! I agree with your Traxxas statement. I think they have gotten a bad rap for being an entry level and basher only company but at least they have all the parts you need and I can still get parts for my 20 year old stampede! Like you said, Tamiya just closes up shop on support parts.when they are done with the run of cars. I am thankful for the guys that bust kits for parts or I'd have a couple kits sitting here broken right now!
It happens but usually it comes out fine the second time. This just did not want to come out well. It turned out good enough but still not the quality I wanted. It should be a really zippy one from the tiny bit I played with it in the garage it seems fast!! I am scouting for a good spot to run it, looking for a nice smooth spot without gravel and junk all over. That chassis is really low and one rogue rock may send it flying!!
@@AddamsPlayground bring a blower if you can to blow off the surface first I has pan cars like this back in the day they need a super smooth spot or a carpet type race track.
@@ShenRC I have an outdoor basketball court I can use if I can't find a smooth and clean parking lot. But I do have a cordless blower I will bring with me!!
Looks fantastic! Cant really see the blemishes in the paint from the video.👌😊 Not sure if you primed the plastic? I’d recommend you give Tamiya’s fine surface primer a try. It works great for shiny surfaces.. Have to agree with you on the lack of parts support for Tamiya. Kyosho is just as bad in that regard.
Thanks, I know they are there so it bugs me LOL! I did not prime it and I rarely do. I did when I first started painting but found it seemed to mot make much difference. Even with a whole can of blue and a couple of coats of clear the variations in finish are still there. It is what it is now and looks good enough!! Yeah both of them seem to be struggling, I don't get it but they don't share any news at all about anything so hard to tell!
Sorry to hear you had paint issues. But it all worked out in the end. Looks fabulous! 👍👍I don’t think you mentioned it in the video, but it sounded like you skipped the primer when painting? I’ve had similar issues painting Tamiya hard body when I didn’t use their primer. The parts situation is really annoying and it’s no different over here. Pretty much everything is out of stock and when it comes back in stock it sells out rapidly. Kyosho is just as bad too. 😩
I have used primer in the past but most of my painting is done right over the bare plastic. It was just odd as the Fighting Buggy was the same blue shell and the same color paint and it turned out great. This one refused to cooperate! I was hoping the top coat of clear would flatten it out but it still looks the same. O'well, it looks good enough and I have spent more than enough time messing with it! The parts thing is so baffling to me. Any common parts seem to be out of stock across all their kits here. I can get screws for days from them, seems to be the only thing they make in bulk! I just don't get it but they have been in business doing this for decades so I guess it works for them! I am hopeful some of the Kyosho 4wd kits find their way here by the end of the year but I think that is some high hopes!!
@@AddamsPlayground Another possibility would be humidity. I've had a few issues painting polycarbonate on very humid days. And it memory serves, Tamiya puts warning notices on some colors because of this. Speaking of Kyosho, hobby shops here recently got a load of new stock in of the older 2WD chassis, so there's a good chance they could start appearing outside of Japan soon. I've also just received a notice telling me the Ultima is due back in stock in the near future, so those should be available sometime soon too. 🙂
@@KaiCityRC I did think the humidity may have been an impactful thing for the first time but the second time it was perfect out and low humidity. I think it was just cursed! LoL I try and keep my eyes open for release notifications and I have seen one site saying they expect a few kits in stock sometime in October so I may risk the backorder status and get one reserved.
I would like to learn how to paint the Tamiya box trailers. So many videos about the Tamiya trucks but NO ONE AT ALL posts videos on how to customize/paint the trailers. Do you know of some industry reason why expert hobbyists seem to withhold trailer painting information?
I have not done one but from what I have gathered from others is that you are painting a pile of loose parts. I know building my flat bed I had a dozen loose parts to paint in various ways to make it as efficient as possible. It may just be too cumbersome to try and record something like that. One of these days I would love to do another rig with a box trailer and will do a series on building the trailer but I doubt it will be anytime soon. I don't have the time to devote to the build I want to do at the moment. I will poke through videos of some of the folks I follow to see if they have anything like that in their videos and if I find something I'll let you know!
It has always been an issue but with the state of things the last couple years have just amplified it to an extreme. They are either going to have to work on things or face being phased out by a ginormous wave of low dollar and high performance stuff flooding the market. Kits will be even less popular than before as everyone is heading to that instant gratification of rtr and they have decent part support!!
Addam... my wife listened in, and said "that dude makes more sense while bitching than ANY man I've ever heard!" Then she asked if you were really a man!!! 🤣😂😅😜 OMG! I said "Cindi, if he's a woman, I would feel more sorry for him than anyone! 😜😅 Then she came over and redeemed herself. She looked at the screen and squeaked "That's the coolest Beard I've ever seen! Carm, why can't yours look that good?" So I spent the rest of the night, whimpering.... 😭 BUT, YOUR RANT was on point! What IS Tamiya doing to its client base? Those of us who've been loyal since 1982.... like me? I'll never get over the Wild One Blockhead.... I pre-ordered and pre PAID for one on the DAY it was announced. I've never had a Wild One, always wanted one, and that one looked special.... WELL..... over the course of the next YEAR, I watched all the big channels get theirs. Then I watched all the midsized channels get theirs. (caveat, I was THRILLED that my close friend, Mark Bryan got his!) THEN I saw the smaller channels getting THEIRS! 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 Then I saw that the RC Elf got some people one, which made me feel warm. I NEVER GOT MINE!!!! 😡🤬😭😭😭💔💔 I contacted them, and they said "I'm sorry, we had to deal with our larger customers first" F'in REALLY!!?? 🤬 I was so upset, I canceled my order. 😭 They wrote back, "WHY are you canceling? Your name was #23.... WORLDWIDE to get one" F'in REALLY!!!???? I let them have it - in language I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW I KNEW! 🤬 .... I still want the red Wild One. But I've got no chance of affording one now. UNLIKE your case, where you're one of the lower class like me and thousands of others, I'm HAPPY you got a Tyrrell!!! Would I want one, sure. Not holding my breath. Well my friend, that was my rant.
Sorry you had so much trouble with paint... 😞 If that happened on my Smokey and the Bandit Grand Hauler, I would have been beside myself. After the first time that happened, I only buy rattle can paint in cases of 6. Better chance that they'll all be from the same batch. But you really PULLED IT OFF!! What a gorgeous car!
Well I am happy your wife sided with me and thinks I have a valid point. I am also pleased to hear I am not a woman and she also approves of the beard. Sorry she shamed you though 😂!! Yeah the handling of releases and their parts support is awful and they seem content with it. I don't know what their deal is as they don't share any information at all outside of pushing new products. You are better off with a real wild one anyway as there are no parts available for the blockhead one if you break any of it. I don't even want to drive mine as it'll be my luck I snap something I either can't replace or it will cost a small fortune to replace. A forced shelf queen in a sense.
Thank you, it still has issues but looks good enough! I have no idea what happened but doing it twice and the second time it was the perfect day out to be painting and it is still wonky. It is good enough and looks great from a few feet away so it'll look good running!
@@AddamsPlayground Seriously, it looks SO good, that only the nitpickiest OCD SOB would find fault with it. IF I Could get any F1 Car (still love that Tyrrel), I'd use rubber Tires for street running. You know as well as I do that Asphalt will EAT Foam Tires in no time! We've got a Banked Oval Track here... for real Cars. I would LOVE to get a RC F1 Car, with a HOT Brushless setup and a 4S Battery.... And go freaking NUTZ!!! 🤪 😜 🤪
Brother.... being shamed is being MARRIED!! 😜 But you really did impress her. Impressed me too! Tamiya's treatment of us little people is my biggest pet peeve.
Hi Addam, I've contacted a model shop I use to see if they can source tyres. Will let you know, regards Paul, UK. Update: special order could take up to 3 months.
LoL that is terrible support!! I could learn how to make my own and source all the materials to make them in 3 months!! I did appreciate it, you and few others have looked for options and I do really thank you all for the support!! It is frustrating but something that is just going to be the way it is I guess. I guess I just need to preorder all the possible things I may need the day things are announced to have a chance!! That is again for the help and have a great weekend my friend!!
I just used a ZEE brand 3600mah or 4200mah Nimh packs. I use them in a lot of the Tamiya kits as they fit well and have plenty of power and run time for me. That and they are cheap! LOL! I get them off of Amazon in pairs for $30-40 depending on the current prices.
@@AddamsPlayground would a 3600work, cause when I look up what the motor takes, it says Lipo but I thought it was nimh and when I put my nimh in, the car beeps. (Just don’t want to break it)
@@scouttroopergaming I have had good luck with those and their lipos too. I mainly run the lipos in the modern stuff as they don't fit most of the Tamiya kits.
I have several of those low profile servos. I burned out 2 of them. I was trying to use them to use for shifting. I had them stalled for a few seconds while set-up my end points and they burned out. Do not stall these servos.
Good to know! Thanks for the heads up. I did set the endpoints so it stops just before it hits the limit. I took it out this weekend and ran it for a while and it worked well. Fingers crossed it holds up! Thanks for stopping by and checking in!! Appreciate the heads up too!
It turned out good but I was just so confused as to why. The first tie I thought it may have been humidity but the white was done at the expect some time and it can out like glass. The second time after the full strip and sanding it was perfect, 75 degrees and low humidity and it did the exact same thing. It just put a damper on the whole build but in the end it does look good and I am thing it is going to run great!! I do have a question for you Rex. What weight oil did you use on the friction plate?
Yeah the first time I thought it may have been the humidity but the white cam out great and it was painted at the same time. I thought stripping it would solve the issue, I figured a stripping it with lacquer thinner and hitting it with a full sanding of 1500 grit would solve all the problems but it turned out the same, better but still the same. It turned out well enough and looks good with the sticker on it!
Well it is molded in the blue but not painted. I normally would have in the past but now I try and sand out mold line and most of the color molded bodies have color variations in them from the way it is injected or the plastic cools and leaves light streaks in the plastic. I have never had a hard body have this much reaction issues. Of course if I had known it was going to be a pain I might have not painted it...
Yeah, from what I have heard the run of kits was the only thing done in the aluminum finish so if you break something you are going to have to buy the regular parts and life with the wrong color or paint them. Kind of silly for sure. I guess we'll never know what big business is thinking!
I love this kit Addam anything with 6 wheels makes me happy I was born in 77

Then you have an old "project truck" build!! Make that the runner body. Once it gets scratched the gray and the red will show through the top color and keep weathering itself for you!!!! I did my Gen8 like that and it turned out really cool looking.
Hello, thanks for your video! Helped a lot! Can you tell me if there are rubber tyres available like at the original car from the 80ies ?
I am glad you enjoyed it! I have looked previously and you can find them but they are discontinued and have been for a while so they are not easy to come across and if you do they are rather pricey.
I can't wait to see how it runs
Oh that's right I don't have to wait lol
LOL! It was a fun one to zip around the basketball court with. The foam tires really hook up and make it a lot of fun to drive!!
@@AddamsPlayground
It's going to be great if they ever get organised and can keep up with the demands, imagine being able to go to your hobby store and get whatever kit you like and be able to get spares.
@@AddamsPlayground shipping situation is about to get much worse too if the railroad goes on strike.. ugh
@@AddamsPlayground sounds good man, I’m pretty sure I know what park you’re referring to and if I’m right, I one hundred percent agree that that basket ball court has got a nice sticky surface lol
super awesome
Thanks! It is a really cool car and a fun build! Thanks for checking it out!
Lookin' good...and so is the car! 😜
Seriously though, I am really looking forward to building mine.
It looks great! to bad you had to go through all that mess stripping it and sanding it to redo it all over again.
The car looks great. I don't understand Tamiya. I think they just take their supporters for granted.
OMG! I said "Cindi, if he's a woman, I would feel more sorry for him than anyone! 😜😅
Then she came over and redeemed herself. She looked at the screen and squeaked "That's the coolest Beard I've ever seen! Carm, why can't yours look that good?"
So I spent the rest of the night, whimpering.... 😭
BUT, YOUR RANT was on point!
(caveat, I was THRILLED that my close friend, Mark Bryan got his!)
THEN I saw the smaller channels getting THEIRS! 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
Then I saw that the RC Elf got some people one, which made me feel warm.
I NEVER GOT MINE!!!! 😡🤬😭😭😭💔💔
I contacted them, and they said "I'm sorry, we had to deal with our larger customers first"
F'in REALLY!!?? 🤬 I was so upset, I canceled my order. 😭 They wrote back, "WHY are you canceling? Your name was #23.... WORLDWIDE to get one"
F'in REALLY!!!????
I let them have it - in language I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW I KNEW! 🤬
If that happened on my Smokey and the Bandit Grand Hauler, I would have been beside myself.
But you really did impress her.
@@AddamsPlayground no problem Addam, have a great weekend yourself. 👍
What battery did you use?
I just used a ZEE brand 3600mah or 4200mah Nimh packs. I use them in a lot of the Tamiya kits as they fit well and have plenty of power and run time for me. That and they are cheap! LOL! I get them off of Amazon in pairs for $30-40 depending on the current prices.
@@AddamsPlayground thank you so much, right now I am trying to find a battery so thanks so much
@@AddamsPlayground would a 3600work, cause when I look up what the motor takes, it says Lipo but I thought it was nimh and when I put my nimh in, the car beeps.

It looks good from here! Maybe too hard on yourself with the paint
@@AddamsPlayground i used 7000 losi fluid, for your asphalt, you may want to try it without oil first
@@rexrcs cool, thank you!

It is a really nice kit and I am looking forward to running it again!
Bummer about the paint, but what's RC without a little trauma? For real though, bummer about the paint on such a great looking kit.
It turned out well enough and looks good with the sticker on it!
but the car comes with painted body all i needed to do was spray with tamiya clear gloss
Run the crap out of it.😂
This is why i wont buy the TAMIYA Wild One. from my understanding they aren't going to make parts for it, which to me does NOT make sense.
Yeah, from what I have heard the run of kits was the only thing done in the aluminum finish so if you break something you are going to have to buy the regular parts and life with the wrong color or paint them. Kind of silly for sure. I guess we'll never know what big business is thinking!
Nonsense.
LOL! ok... you word is balderdash!
